PLAYING WITH EXTRACTION PARAMETERS TO GET THE RIGHT FLAVOR

ABSTRACT
CO2 is a very potent in extracting basically anything you need from hops. This UK research team worked with different conditions including liquid and supercritical CO2, as well as the addition of other solvents, e.g. ethanol, to extract the many important aroma fractions from hops. Each hop variety yields distinct oil fractions and a combination of different varieties and fractions can of course contribute to a wide portfolio of products. Also, the processing of aged hops is feasible and possible undesirable flavours may be eliminated in the process.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Vancouver Island Brewery sold to an Ontario businessman
Vancouver Island Brewery has been sold to an Ontario businessman who is a partner in Muskoka Brewery, Times Colonist reported on June 15.

New owner Bob MacDonald, of Oakville, is a partner in the Ontario cottage brewery and is also the founder of Wakefield Canada Inc. of Toronto.

Wakefield is the Canadian distributor of Castrol motor oil and lubricants. It has 220-plus employees and offices in Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and Coquitlam, its website states.

Barry Fisher, who bought into Vancouver Island Brewery in 1986, said the changeover was official on Wednesday.

The price was not disclosed.

“It is time to move on and pass the torch to a successor who will carry on the quality beer legacy that Vancouver Island Brewery has accomplished,” Fisher said in a statement.

“All operations and decision-making will remain on Vancouver Island, and the brewery will continue to operate independently.”

The Victoria-based brewery also has a new president — Tim Barnes, formerly of Central City Brewers of Vancouver.

MacDonald’s long-term vision and interest in investing for growth will be “welcome news to our longtime employees, many who have been with the brewery for 20 to 30 years,” Fisher said.

Vancouver Island Brewery, 2330 Government St., has 34 employees. It has been in that location ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Walking Tree Brewery to open on June 23
Indian River County's third and largest brewery has put down roots, TCPalm reported on June 16.

After years of planning, Vero Beach residents Alan Dritenbas and Mike Malone are opening Walking Tree Brewery on June 23.

The brewery and tap room are in a historic building built in the early 1940s as a warehouse for the Navy during World War II.

"As soon as I walked in the space and looked up and saw the trusses, I just knew this place wanted to be a brewery," said Dritenbas, noting the size of the building and location near downtown were other selling points.

Dritenbas and Malone have 30-year leases with two five-year renewals with the city for the 24,000-square-foot building at 3209 Dodger Road and with the Vero Beach Regional Airport for the land.

The co-founders, who have the support of some local investors, have spent more than $300,000 in renovations to the building to bring it up to code.

Unlike other Treasure Coast breweries that started out small and then expanded, Walking Tree is starting with a large 20-barrel system. One batch coming through the system produces 40 half-barrel kegs or about 620 gallons.

To put the volume into perspective, Malone offers his favorite comparison: "To drink ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: Jughandle Brewing ready to open its doors in Tinton Falls
Eight months after signing a lease, Jughandle Brewing is ready to open its doors and debut its lineup of craft beers, Asbury Park Press reported on June 17.

The brewery will be open for tours and tastings Saturday and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m.

“Everyone is very excited that we’re opening, (we’ve) been looking forward to it,” said part-owner Michael Skudera. “We have great support and (hopefully) great turnout over the weekend."

Skudera, of Tinton Falls, met his business partners Pete Artherholt of Tinton Falls, and Chris Hanigan of Red Bank, at a party in 2014 and tried their home-brewed beer. He said it was among the best he’d tasted.

The men decided to go pro and signed a lease last October for a space in a former 3,000-square-foot flower shop in the Tinton Falls Centre on Asbury Avenue.

The buildout has been an eight-month process that has culminated in a completely renovated space, which can fit over 100 guests in its 2,000-square-foot tasting room.

Brewery news USA, NC: Ecusta Brewery opens as taproom in downtown Brevard
A new brewery taproom has opened in downtown Brevard and will be serving its own beers at a grand opening next weekend, Asheville Citizen-Times reported.

Ecusta Brewery at 36 E. Main St. in Brevard opened as a taproom with guest beers on Memorial Day weekend, but has set June 25 as its grand opening, said owner Josh Chambers. He will also open a second Ecusta location known as the Drift Taproom in about three weeks at 49 Pisgah Highway in Pisgah Forest. The Ecusta locations will push the total to four breweries in Brevard, including Brevard Brewing and Oskar Blues Brewery.

Ecusta will have three house beers - a lemon rye, an IPA and a pale ale. Chambers is also doing a small batch porter, a summer ale, a double IPA and a red ale. Currently he is serving beers from Innovation Brewing in Sylva, Sanctuary Brewing and Southern Appalachian of Hendersonville and Boojum Brewing in Waynesville.

The downtown location has a three-barrel system and the Pisgah Forest brewery will have a seven-barrel brewing system, he said.

There are now more than 50 breweries open around Western North Carolina, about half of them in Buncombe County and Asheville, and at least a half dozen ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: San Antonio Brewing Co. hopes to open in October
After scouring for a permanent home for the past four years, San Antonio Brewing Co. plans to open the doors on a 7,000-square-foot microbrewery and pub in Southtown in October, San Antonio Express-News reported on June 17.

The San Antonio Zoning Commission will vote July 5 on whether to rezone the property, formerly a storage warehouse that supplied foam rubber, at 302 E. La Chappelle for alcohol production and food sales.

If the brewery clears the hurdle, it will be on its way to becoming the latest entry in San Antonio’s growing craft-brewing scene. The number of independent breweries and brewpubs here has grown from two in 2009 to 11 in 2016, according to records with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.

The seven-barrel brewery will produce and serve San Antonio Brewing Co.’s Texas Wild Flower Pale Ale, among other brews, co-owner and brewer Vera Deckard said. The company hopes to eventually distribute its beer products from the site.

Beer won’t be the only item on the menu. Deckard said the brewery will also serve pretzels, charcuterie, including local cheeses and dry cured sausages, and other “easy, beer-centric foods.”

Nearby residents won’t have to worry about the clang of brewing machinery or booming bass, Deckard said. ...More info on site

Whisky news Canada, NS: Nova Scotia's largest distillery officially opens on June 18
Nova Scotia's largest distillery officially opened on June 18 in Guysborough, N.S., CBC.ca reported.

Authentic Seacoast Brewery and Distillery at the Osprey Shores Golf Resort celebrated its grand opening with live music, tours and free samples of the brewery's Rare Bird beer.

The multi-million dollar facility is owned by entrepreneur Glynn Williams, head of Toronto-based Reliance Aerotech. Williams has been pouring money into the community for the last 10 years — about C$20 million in total.

The former financier owns a collection of businesses there under the Authentic Seacoast brand. They include a soap-making operation, a coffee roaster, a craft brewery, the Rare Bird Pub and the Skipping Stone Cafe.

Last September, he said he hoped to at least double his workforce in the community from the two dozen full-time jobs he had created by then. Over the last four decades Guysborough has lost two-thirds of its population to outmigration.

"We're doing this for lots of reasons, one of which is to create meaningful, sustainable, year-round jobs in this community of approximately 400 or 500 people where every job matters," he said then.

"There are way easier ways to make money at less risk. This is more of a social investment than it is a financial ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Brass Cannon Brewing moving to new location and expanding to 20-barrel brewing operation
When Brass Cannon Brewing opens its new location on Mooretown Road in Williamsburg, it will not just be a move, it will be a major expansion, The Virginia Gazette reported on June 17.

The brewery, formerly located in Toano, will expand from a four-barrel brewing operation to a 20-barrel one.

"It's a five time expansion of capacity," Matt Webb, said on June 17 as he oversaw continuing work on the new location at 5476 Mooretown Road. "But it's really more than that. The old rig (the brewery apparatus) could only be run once a week. The new rig can be run once a day."

Brass Cannon has been selling beer since 2012, and started as a labor of love by avid home brewers.

The company won't be opening the new location quite as soon as it hoped.

"We put out June 25 on social media," Webb said. "We aren't going to make that, there are still construction delays."

He said Brass Cannon is now shooting to have its brewery and tap room open by the first weekend in July.

"We have a good two weeks work of work, mainly putting the brewing system together and then getting our permits," Webb said.

The new 3,500-square-foot location is twice as ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Rockford Brewing Company owners announce expansion project
The duo behind Rockford Brewing Company - Reed Sjostrom and Chris Manuel - say they're expanding because one room for their 14 tanks and dozens of kegs just isn't enough anymore, WIFR reported on June 19.

"I did not imagine it would get this big this fast," said Sjostrom, Prairie St.’s Vice President. Until the fall of 2013, Sjostrom says he was just a construction worker. Then the Rockford local decided he was going to brew his own beer, while renovating an old brewhouse. "The idea of expanding the brewery has always been on our mind and it's probably just gonna have to happen sooner rather than later," he said.

A 30-barrell fermenter is one of three new tanks that will allow the brewery to produce 8,000 more pints of beer a month.

"Distribution starting up, kegs getting out to bars, we got some really cool can designs coming, and we'll be the first one in town to have a crowler," Sjostrom said.

Crowlers are spin-offs of refillable, glass howlers/growlers: 32 ounces of local beer in a single use aluminum can.

"It's gonna be fantastic,” he said. “I mean, boaters can come in, order a six-pack of whatever beer anybody wants that's on our taps; ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SC: Blue Ridge Brewing reopens in Greer
After spending 20 years in downtown Greenville, Blue Ridge Brewing Company closed its doors at the end of 2015 with plans to open in a new location in downtown Greer.

This week, the popular brewery and restaurant opened its doors to the public at 308 Trade St., Upstate Business Journal reported on June 15

Initially, Blue Ridge will only be open for dinner beginning at 4 p.m., but plans are forthcoming to open for lunch as well.

Brewery news USA, KS & OH: Tallgrass Brewing Co. returning to Ohio
Tallgrass Brewing Co. is returning to Ohio, Ohio.com reported on June 14.

The Manhattan, Kansas, brewery — which makes brands such as Buffalo Sweat, Songbird Saison and 8-Bit Pale Ale — hopes to start selling its beers here by late summer.

“Ohio is a great craft beer market,” founder Jeff Gill said when asked why Tallgrass is coming to the Buckeye State. The Kansas brewery was in Ohio previously but had pulled out several years ago to focus on its home market.

Gill isn’t sure yet specifically which brands will be available here and the brewery is negotiating with a distributor.

Tallgrass has a core lineup that includes the beers mentioned before. It also offers seasonals and a special “Explorer Series” that includes beers such as Raspberry Jam and Key Lime Pie. It sells its beer in four-packs of 16-ounce cans. The brewery also plans to have a variety pack available.

Buffalo Sweat, an oatmeal cream stout, is the brewery’s best seller and continues to grow in popularity, Gill said. The Vanilla Bean Buffalo Sweat, part of the seasonal lineup, won a bronze medal at this year’s World Beer Cup.

Tallgrass, a regional brewery that expects to produce about 24,000 barrels this year, started in 2007. Gill, ...More info on site

Brewery news World: SABMiller CEO shoulders near 17% drop in his pay packet
Alan Clark, the chief executive of SABMiller, has shouldered a near 17 per cent drop in his pay packet for the year to the end of March after the brewer, which has agreed to a takeover by its bigger rival Anheuser-Busch InBev, suffered a drop in profits last year as a result of weak emerging market currencies and costs associated with negotiating the deal that has been dubbed “mega-brew”, the Financial Times reported on June 20.

Mr Clark’s total remuneration for the year dropped to £5.9 mln from £7.1 mln a year earlier, according to the brewer’s annual report published on June 20. His pay was affected by a big drop in the value of awards made under the brewer’s long-term incentive scheme, to £2.4 mln from £4.4 mln in 2015.

SABMiller reports its financial results in US dollars but is heavily focused on emerging markets in Latin America and Africa. A slide in emerging market currencies against the dollar has taken the fizz out of its recent results, while profits last year – which fell nearly 16 per cent to $4.07 bln – were also dragged down by hefty exceptional costs.

These included costs associated with negotiating its £71 bln takeover by ...More info on site

Brewery news Serbia: Heineken investing EUR15 mln in its Zaječarska Pivara brewery
Heineken has announced it is investing €15 million in Serbian brewer Zaječarska Pivara over the next two years as part of an ongoing restructuring process, ESM reported on June 20.

The brewery is part of Heineken Srbija since 2008 and the Dutch brewing company has so far invested €23 million.

The brewery recently began producing Zaječarsko Crno, a black beer that combines four types of malt: light, special, caramel and black.

Brewery news India: Heineken seeks to be impleaded in the Vijay Mallya case
Dutch beer major Heineken on June 17 filed an application before India’s Debt Recovery Tribunal seeking to be impleaded in the Vijay Mallya case, The Economic Times reported.

Making a submission in the DRT, Counsel for Heineken said the company seeks permission to implead itself in the case and enjoy the right of first refusal over the UBL shares.

Heineken has some presumptive rights on UBL shares held and owned by Mallya. "We are seeking permission to implead in the case to have the first right of refusal over UBL shares," he said.

Right of first refusal is a contractual term between shareholders which are usually included in the Articles of Association.

If one shareholder wishes to dispose of shares that are subject to a right of first refusal (ROFR), it must first offer them to those other shareholders who have the benefit of ROFR.

Making separate submissions, Counsel for United Spirits Limited (USL) pleaded for vacating interim applications pertaining to attachment of USL shares and also sought dismissal of petition seeking attachment of dividend.

Brewery news EU: Germans named Europe’s top beer-consumers when they head out - survey
With the UEFA European Championship tournament now in full swing, fans from all corners of the continent will be sharing the moment with a beer or a soft drink in a bar or restaurant.

Data from NPD Group shows who’s drinking what in Europe’s “big 4” nations — France, Italy, the UK and Germany — when they head out, Malay Mail Online reported on June 21.

Germans, it seems, are quick to get the beers in when out and about. In fact, NPD’s data puts Germany in the lead as Europe’s top beer-consuming country, where each month 27per cent of adults aged 16 and over go to a café, a bistro or a restaurant and order a beer.

Although other nations lead the way when it comes to making this kind of outing, Germans are the most likely to choose a beer.

On average, they make 3.8 visits per month that result in ordering a beer.

The French, on the other hand, drink the least beer, with just 2.3 visits per month that involve ordering a beer.

Brewery news Ghana: Guinness Ghana’s rights issue oversubscribed
Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited’s GHC180 million Rights Issue has been over-subscribed, Pulse.com.gh reported on June 21.

The company succeeded in raising GHC186.4 million instead, which was GHC694,000 more than it had aimed to raise, and had to return it.

Guinness Ghana launched the GHS180 million rights offer in March, 2016 with the aim of retiring part of its debt.

The company believed that the move would optimise its capital structure and improve its financial and operational flexibility.

Following an earlier Rights Issue of GHC70,000,000 in November 2011, the company successfully reduced its outstanding net debt from GHS 104,907,000 as at June 2011 to GHS 5,626,000 as at June 2012.

Brewery news UK: Heineken confident of Amstel’s potential as premium brand
With the launch of its first ever UK TV ad during the England vs Slovakia match on June 20, Heineken is confident its Amstel brand can become a big player in the UK market due to its “authentic roots”, Marketing Week reported on June 21.

Amstel’s first ad shows the growth of the fictional smallest bar in Amsterdam. Once every few years, when the ice freezes over the canal, it transforms to become the ‘largest bar in the city’.

David Lette, premium brands director at Heineken, hopes the campaign can mirror Amstel’s aims to grow fourfold over the next five to six years.

The premium beer brand launched to scale in the supermarkets back in March, having previously just been available in bars and pubs, where sales grew 20% in 2015. And the fact Amstel is already an established brand in the trade gives Lette confidence it can go on to become an established retail brand as well.

He told Marketing Week: “We have incredible confidence in Amstel as it is a premium continental lager, that really does come from Amsterdam. The fact it has been coming from Amsterdam since 1870 gives it a very authentic history that’s different to what the competition is ...More info on site

Brewery news Kenya: Outgoing East Africa Breweries Ltd managing director describes Kenyans as the most price-sensitive beer consumers in the world
Outgoing East Africa Breweries Ltd managing director Charles Ireland has described Kenyans as the most price-sensitive beer consumers in the world, The Standard reported on June 21.

Ireland, who will be replaced by fellow Briton Andrew Cowan at the end of next month, said price offers meant a major spike in beer sales. And in contrast, any price increases translated to significant dips in consumption.

“I have never encountered a market as price-sensitive as this in the countries I have worked in, and they are many,” Mr Ireland, who has been at the helm of EABL for three years, said in an interview.

Since his arrival in 2013, the Kenyan beer market has undergone major changes including hefty taxes that at one time nearly drove Senator Keg, the brewer’s most selling brand, out of the market.

Excise duty was slapped on the cheap beer three years ago, raising the prices by a quarter and resulted in a sharp dip in consumption. EABL nearly withdrew the product from the market, while the dozens of second generation spirits entered the market with fatal results.

Consumption of cheap beer jumped in the last financial year to drive revenues and profits for the firm. It ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan & Myanmar: Kirin Holdings to start selling Ichiban beer in Myanmar this month
Kirin Holdings will sell its signature beer Ichiban to Myanmar consumers starting this month, Nikkei Asian Review reported on June 18.

The Japanese company has offered Ichiban as draft beer in upscale restaurants in the country, but will now target households directly by selling retail versions.

Kirin will produce canned and bottled Ichiban with Myanmar Brewery, the country's market leader, which it acquired last year. The products will be marketed through the subsidiary's sales channel.

Ichiban, which is currently available in 40 markets, will be positioned as a premium offering in the Southeast Asian country. The prices of around 120 yen ($1.15) per 330ml can and 140 yen per small bottle are comparable to such overseas brands as Heineken of the Netherlands, but 30-40% pricier than standard local offerings such as Myanmar Beer, which is sold by Myanmar Brewery.

With a target of having 200 retail stores carry Ichiban by the end of the year, Kirin will step up marketing to supermarkets and other businesses in urban areas.

As the Myanmar economy grows, the beer market has been expanding at a rate of more than 10% per year. Foreign breweries are in intense competition to capture the rising demand. Danish brewery Carlsberg has offerings targeting ...More info on site
