HOPS DO NOT NECESSARILY NEED TO TOUCH BEER FOR DRY HOPPING PURPOSES

ABSTRACT
A German research team that came up with the idea of extracting hop aroma into beer by applying a combined desorption/absorption process. The process-dependent mass transfer was predicted using two different approaches: a thermodynamic approach, and response surface modelling. The methods offer the following advantages: no beer losses, no clarification steps needed, potential reuse of hops for bittering. Using response surface methodology was clearly superior as compared to calculating the mass transfer using thermodynamic approximations.

Klie, R.: Feasibility and Optimization of a Novel Desorption/ Absorption Process for Transferring Hop Volatiles into Beer, poster presentation at the Trends in Brewing Conference, April 2016, Ghent.

Brewery news USA: AB InBev and Craft Brew Alliance expand collaboration
Craft Brew Alliance, Inc. (CBA) and Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) announced on August 23 a series of new commercial agreements that expand and strengthen the companies’ long-term relationship and create new growth opportunities for both companies. The agreements include an amended and extended master distribution agreement, a new contract brewing arrangement, and a new international distribution agreement.

Through the agreements, AB InBev will provide additional support and committed resources to accelerate CBA’s growth strategy, which includes: strengthening its distinctive portfolio of craft brands; maximizing the potential of Kona Brewing Co. as one of the fastest-growing American craft brands; and optimizing CBA’s brewing footprint to drive gross margin expansion and deliver its craft beers to more beer lovers in the U.S. and around the world.

CBA and AB InBev have extended the current fee structure of their existing Master Distributor Agreement for 10 additional years, through 2028. The amended agreement secures CBA’s brands in the industry’s strongest wholesaler network, enabling continued investment in brand growth and strategic partnerships, such as Appalachian Mountain Brewery and Cisco Brewers.

Under the terms of a new contract brewing arrangement, CBA and AB InBev will work together to transition up to 300,000 barrels of volume into AB InBev’s ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Stormcloud Brewing Company to build new production and bottling facility in Frankfort
A long overdue expansion in the works for downtown Frankfort’s very own Stormcloud Brewing Company, 9&10 News reported on August 20.

Last week the brewery announced they'll build a new production and bottling facility.

They'll build it on property along M-115 in the Frankfort Industrial Park.

After just three years of being in downtown Frankfort and distributing to more than 30 Michigan counties, Stormcloud Brewery says they've already outgrown their facility.

They have plans of someday distributing to the entire state.

So they're going to need a lot more room to brew, and they'll get it.

The brewing company’s communications and marketing manager Keirsun Scott says, “We're essentially more than doubling our brewing capacity so we're moving to a much larger brewing system and we'll be able make a lot more beer and meet the demand and hopefully we can distribute throughout the state of Michigan.”

Stormcloud Brewing Company plans to break ground in October and start production next spring.

Brewery news USA, PA: The Millworks Brewery in midtown Harrisburg begins brewing its own beer
In keeping with its local philosophy, The Millworks in midtown Harrisburg has begun brewing its own beer, PennLive.com reported on August 19.

The first rounds of craft beer will be served beginning Aug. 23, the same day the Millworks opens its new 165-seat rooftop biergarten, said Patrick Garrity, operations manager.

"We do food from scratch. Now we are going to do some craft beer," he said.

The Millworks Brewery features a 15-barrel system to create draughts that will be on tap at the restaurant at 340 Verbeke St.

The following beers initially will be offered: Session ale, Oktoberfest, Saison, IPA, Double IPA, Belgian pale ale and a Farmhouse IPA.

Earlier this year, Millworks' owner Josh Kesler said the brewery was part of the facility's original concept, but they opted to add it after opening the restaurant.

They hired brewmaster Jeff Musselman who has worked at Troegs Brewing Company, Weyerbacher Brewing Company and Hauser Estate Winery.

Some of the beers, including the Farmhouse IPA, are made with 100 percent sourced Pennsylvania ingredients, Garrity said. Ingredients such as hops are sourced from Sunny Brae Hops in Carlisle.

The Millworks opened in 2015 and focuses its menu on local and sustainable ingredients. The complex houses more than two ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Denver Beer Company to build its third brewery in Olde Town Arvada
Denver Beer Company, which helped kick off the city’s brewery surge when it opened on Platte Street in 2011, is taking its beer and its successful formula on the road: The company plans to open a third brewery and tasting room in a former car dealership in Olde Town Arvada sometime in early 2017, Westword reported on August 22.

The 4,350-square-foot space at 5768 Olde Wadsworth Boulevard will include a seven-barrel brewing system — just like the Platte Street spot — and will be modeled after the original tap room. There will also be long, communal tables on a 1,500-square-foot patio, open garage doors and local artwork.

“One of the most rewarding parts of this business is to watch customers in-house, smiling as they drink our beer. We love that in-person interaction,” says Charlie Berger, who owns Denver Beer Co. with former college compatriot Patrick Crawford. “And when we visited Olde Town Arvada and sent people up there to look at it, it just felt like a great fit for our team, for our culture and for our vibe.”

Like the Platte Street location, the Arvada brewery will give Denver Beer Co. an opportunity to innovate and create new beers, Berger adds. The ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Brunswick Bierworks launches in Toronto to make locally foreign craft beers
Toronto's craft beer scene might be expanding, but one brewing facility is keen on introducing the city to brands from outside of Ontario - and now it's getting ready to brew these beers right here at home. Enter Brunswick Bierworks, a massive new brewing facility that recently set up shop in East York, blogTO reported on August 20.

Brunswick, located at 25 Curity Ave., opened in partnership with Craft Brand Company, an organization that brings beer from places like British Columbia, the United States, Europe and New Zealand into the Ontario market.

But importing beer is tricky. There are only a few channels you can go through and usually, what's coming in isn't as fresh as it could be. So Craft Brand Co.'s Mike Laba and his team have been thinking about how to thwart these challenges for a while.

"It would be really great to one day be able to find a brewery in Ontario that could make some of these products locally so that people could enjoy them fresh," he says. "We could direct deliver and get around a lot of the challenges a lot of craft brewers have when exporting to Ontario."

And that's exactly what they're doing at Brunswick, which ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Victoria Caledonian Brewery & Distillery opens its doors in Saanich on August 17
A new multi-million dollar brewery, distillery and tourist centre has opened its doors on August 17th in Saanich on southern Vancouver Island, Canadian Beer News reported.

Victoria Caledonian Brewery & Distillery has been founded by Graeme Macaloney, and funded by contributions from 250 investors across Canada as well as more than C$2 million from the federal Agriculture Department’s Agri-Innovation Program.

Located in a 17,000 square foot facility at 761 Enterprise Crescent, Victoria Caledonian is producing beer under the Twa Dogs banner, a name inspired by a poem by Robert Burns. Brands created by brewmaster Dean McLeod include Jolly Beggar’s Pale Ale, Drouthy Neighbour IPA, Keekin’ Glass Pilsner, Holy Willie’s Robust Porter, and Mistress Of My Soul Saison.

On the distillery side, it will be a number of years before whisky distilled and aged on site will be available, but in the meantime, master distiller Mike Nicolson will be creating exclusive “guest whisky” blends using whiskies imported from Scotland.

Victoria Caledonian Brewery & Distillery is open from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily, with beer, whisky and merchandise available in an on-site tasting room and retail store. Twa Dogs beers will also be available at select private and government liquor stores in British Columbia.

Brewery news Canada, AB: Dog Island Brewing days away from releasing its first batch of beer
Prairie beer news blog On Beer reports that a new brewery in northern Alberta is just days away from releasing its first batch of beer to the public.

Dog Island Brewing is being established by longtime homebrewers Ben Fiddler and Chad Paulson, who decided to switch from being hobbyists to professionals when the downturn in the oil industry led to a reduction in the work they were doing on the local patch.

Currently brewing on a 200 litre system they had originally built for homebrewing, the pair received their manufacturer’s licence last month, and have brewed up several beers including The Pits Wit, Nine Mile Session Ale, DiBs Berry Wheat (made with raspberries), and Saskatchatoon Wheat (made with Saskatoon berries).

Dog Island beers will be available soon on tap at several local bars and pubs, and once the proper approvals have been received, growler fills will be available at the brewery.

Brewery news USA, OH: Cuyahoga Falls’ HiHO Brewing hoping to open by Thanksgiving
When Jon and Ali Hovan started looking around the Akron area for a suitable spot for their new brewery, they had one major requirement.

“We wanted to be in a community that wanted us,” Jon Hovan said.

They found that in Cuyahoga Falls, the Akron Beacon Journal reports.

The Hovans, who say the city has been welcoming to their venture, hope to open HiHO Brewing Co. by Thanksgiving in a former car showroom at 1707 Front St.

They hosted a private gathering on August 20 to show off the 6,000-square-foot space, offer tastings of their homebrews such as Bossy Lady IPA and Gorges Blonde Ale, talk about the upcoming operation and kick off an online fundraising campaign.

Their goal is to create a neighborhood gathering place, as opposed to a production brewery.

“We’re going to be really focused on community and socializing here and making new friends,” Jon Hovan said. “We want to make it feel like home.”

With a trailhead nearby for the Summit Metro Parks, they also want to get involved with hiking, biking and outdoor events.

HiHO will offer four to six regular beers on draft, and an additional four to six seasonal brews.

The building was still a shell last week, as the seven-barrel ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Metro Brewing Co. opens in San Luis Obispo but is not brewing yet
A new brewery has opened in Creekside Brewing Co.’s former spot at 1040 Broad St. overlooking the creek in San Luis Obispo, The Tribune reported on August 19.

Metro Brewing Co. opened quietly on August 15, though it’s not brewing just yet — the company has yet to hire a brewmaster for the 13-barrel, on-site system. In the meantime, Metro will pour drafts from one or two featured craft breweries from around the state each month, starting this month with Novato-based Moylan’s Brewery and Kernville’s Kern River Brewing Co.

“We’ll have unique, interesting things you’re not going to get at other places around here,” said manager Rai Reynold. Pints run from $6 to $8, with 5-ounce tastes costing $2 to $4 each.

Metro purchased the business in February 2015 and operated it under the Creekside name for about a year before deciding to close down and rebrand, said Reynold, who declined to disclose the company’s investment in the space.

The entire location has been redesigned with sleek, industrial greys and blacks and pops of red, including the central bar and the one that wraps around the creekside patio.

Local artists will be invited to paint or tag the now mostly white wall spaces.

“It’ll give customers ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, MB: Torque Brewing excited to open its doors to the public in St. James
A River Heights man is excited to open the doors of a new brewery for the city.

With the support of new legislation, Winnipeg will soon have no shortage of craft beer brewers and taprooms. Among the first is Torque Brewing, located in St. James at 330-830 King Edward St., Winnipeg Free Press reported on August 22.

Torque president John Heim, a River Heights resident says that the goal is keep it as local as possible, from the brew to the equipment and taproom furniture. The brewery recently churned out their first batch, which will be available by the end of summer.

"In 2009 I went down to Minneapolis… and I tried a beer by Surly (Brewing Co.) and that was sort of my ‘Ahh!’ moment," Heim said. "We knew the potential of brewing in Manitoba, where the rest of Canada was, where we should be… we were well on our way before the legislation changed but a lot of people got on board after."

New legislation includes a tax break for new, local breweries and taprooms as well as bylaws specific to those facilities. Torque can’t be open later than 9 p.m. or operate a kitchen or serve food that requires a knife, ...More info on site

Brewery news Argentina: AB InBev’s Quilmes brewery to invest 26.9 bln pesos in expansion over the next five years
Brewery Cerveceía y Maltería Quilmes — controlled by Leuven, Belgium-based Anheuser-Busch InBev — on August 23 told President Mauricio Macri that it will invest 26.9 billion pesos (1.9 billion dollars) over the next five years in Argentina, Buenos Aires Herald reported.

Quilmes’ representatives explained the investment will go to expand its factories, the installation of a dealcoholizing plant, a new line of barrels and the expansion of its agricultural business for the production of barley and hops.

Another huge bet will entail the expansion of the brewing plant the company has in Acheral, in the northern province of Tucumán, where it will invest 650 million pesos to double the output of bottled products and beer and soft drinks output for the domestic and foreign markets. Inauguration of the plant is scheduled for the coming weeks. As a first step it will mean 500 new direct or indirect jobs.

Meeting with Macri at the Pink House were Carlos Alberto Sicupira, one of the biggest shareholders of AB InBev, Marcio Froes, president of Cervecería y Maltería Quilmes Latinoamérica Sur, and Pablo Querol, vice-president of Corporate and Legal Affairs of Cervecería y Maltería Quilmes.

Barley news World: World total grain output expected to slightly increase in 2016/17
IGC’s estimate of world grain production in 2016/17 is 2.046 vs. 2 bln tonnes last year.

According to the analysts, there will be 40 mln tonnes more corn harvested in the USA (in Sept/Oct) and Brazil (only in early 2017). A production plus of 6.5 mln tonnes of wheat in Russia and 5.7 mln tonnes in the U.S. will be compensated by a sharp fall in France. The IGC estimate of 34 (= minus 8.5) mln tonnes of French wheat is higher than recent trade estimates of 30 mln tonnes. However, world stocks of grains and oilseeds will be more than comfortable and leave little room for better markets.

Black Sea wheat and barley exert enormous pressure on world markets, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their latest report.

Brewery news UK: Guinness launches rye pale ale within its Brewers Project range
Guinness has extended its Brewers Project range of beers with the launch of Guinness rye pale ale, the latest beer from its brewery at St James’s Gate, Dublin, FoodBev reported on August 22.

Available in the off-trade from September, Guinness rye pale ale brings the unique character of the stout to the world of pale ale, boasting a peppery bite and citrus and grapefruit notes that perfectly balanced with crystal malt to leave a toasted biscuit flavour. It is the latest new beer to be developed at the Open Gate Brewery, the experimental brewery at the heart of Guinness innovation.

The launch provides retailers with the opportunity to tap into the huge premium bottled ale category, which continues to grow ahead of total beer with £19 million year-on-year growth last year, brand owner Diageo said. The 5% ABV pale ale will also capitalise on the success of The Brewers Project portfolio, which has contributed £5.6 million to this total growth.

Peter Simpson, lead brewer for the Open Gate Brewery, commented: “In December a few of us at The Open Gate Brewery got together and made a rye pale ale as a Christmas gift for our friends and families. Everyone liked it so much ...More info on site

Brewery news Africa: Three firms hired to distribute Heineken products across East Africa continue legal battle against Dutch brewing giant
Three firms hired to distribute beer maker Heineken’s products across East Africa want the defense the firm has filed in a distribution dispute struck out, the Daily Nation reported on August 22.

Maxam Ltd, Uganda’s Modern Lane Ltd and Tanzania’s Olepasu Ltd have claimed that Heineken International BV, Heineken Brouwerijen BV and their local arm Heineken East Africa Import, have filed their separate defenses out of the time allocated by court and should not be accommodated.

The trio argues that Heineken has also not provided sufficient reasons for the long delay in complying with the court orders. The court had directed the firm and its local subsidiary to file its defense by June 16, but this was not done until August 11, 2016.

“The three purported amended defenses are in blatant contravention of the mandatory provisions of civil procedure rules. We are, therefore, unable to file any reply as required under the same rules and the three amended defenses should therefore be struck out,” say the distributors through lawyer Philip Nyachoti.

The High Court had earlier this year granted orders stopping Heineken from terminating a multimillion-shilling contract signed with the three companies to distribute the brand in East Africa until the application is heard ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Oriental Brewery in the grip of labor dispute
South Korean brewer Oriental Brewery (OB) has been in the grip of labor dispute. OB’s labor union has gone on a general strike since Aug.16, further exacerbating labor-management dispute, Korea IT Times reported on August 23.

At first blush, the dispute seems to be caused by their disagreement over wage increases. However, some point out that it is an outgrowth of OB’s failure in reflecting the reality of the Korean liquor market after OB changed hands.

Since December last year, OB’s labor union has engaged in collective bargaining with the management more than 30 times to negotiate a pay rise. However, as the negotiations was going nowhere, the labor union decided to down tools.

The labor union claims that the management has set goals too high in order to make incentives elusive, a move that is no different from wage reductions. On the other hand, the management argues that they did not provide incentives because the goals have been attained and their incentive system exists separately from their wage system.

A workers’ strike escalated on August 22 at Cambrew’s Sihanoukville brewery, protesters said, with the company acknowledging that the work stoppage was causing major disruptions, The Cambodia Daily reported.

“The protest has had a big impact on the company’s production,” said Chheng Sopheak, head of human resources at Cambrew, though he could not quantify the cost to the factory’s operations.

The company met with protesters on August 20 and the two sides were on their way to resolving the dispute, Mr. Sopheak said.
