HOW IMPORTANT IS THE HSI VALUE FOR
THE SENSORY PROPERTIES OF WHIRPOOL
HOPPED AND DRY HOPPED BEERS?
ABSTRACT
The HSI value is a very important parameter for
brewers to evaluate the quality of hops used for
brewing. However, few investigations have been done
on the sensorial influence on the final beer when
hops with higher HSI values are used. Our team
worked with the varieties Perle and Saaz, purposely
oxidizing the samples resulting in HSI values varying
between 0.27 (low), 0.33 (medium) and 0.49 (high).
Beers produced were hopped in the whirlpool and
additionally dry hopped. With the whirlpool hopped
beers, the HSI value was less important than in the dry
hopped beers. The beers dry hopped with hops of high
HSI values were rated slightly lower in flavor and aroma
quality, however not significantly.

Vietnam: Sabeco shares soar after listing plan announcement
|
The price of Sai Gon Beer Alcohol Beverage Joint Stock Company (Sabeco) shares has soared in recent days on the over-the-counter (OTC) market after the company announced its listing plan on the HCM Stock Exchange, Viet Nam News reported on September 23.
The number of offers to buy shares of Vietnam’s biggest beer producer has perked up rapidly since early this week with the bid volume reaching over one million shares a day.
The tender prices are currently around VND100,000-102,000 (US$4.48-4.57) per share, up 25 per cent over that of early August.
Increased investor interest was attributed to Sabeco’s listing plan this year.
Last week, Sabeco asked the Ministry of Industry and Trade to debut its shares on the HCM Stock Exchange in the future. The company said it was working with a consulting securities firm and the procedures would take at least two months to be completed.
Shares of Sabeco are being traded on the OTC market, a decentralised and off-exchange trading floor where stocks are traded through a dealer network.

Canada: Alberta’s unseasonable wet conditions cause quality concern for malting barley growers

Unseasonably wet conditions in Alberta this year are causing quality concerns for malt barley growers there, Manitoba Co-operator reported on September 23.
Harvest typically begins in late August for many growers, but steady downpours have forced delays across much of the province.
“We actually started Sept. 1, but we only got two days in before it started to rain. We got two days in the following week and four days last week and that’s the extent of it; it’s just been that wet,” said Jason Lenz, an Alberta Barley director who farms northwest of Red Deer.
“I think the maltsters are definitely not going to get the quality they’re hoping for. That may increase the price of malt, but anyone that has barley that’s starting to chit bad and lose its germination, they’re going to take dockage,” he said.
His concerns are echoed by fellow director Jeff Nielsen, who has an operation near Olds. “I’ve had two days of harvest weather the whole month of September.
“Conditions are questionable right now; there is the possibility of higher chit in the barley,” he said.
