POLYPHENOL PROFILES OF DIFFERENT HOP VARIETIES AND THEIR IMPACT ON BEER FLAVOR

ABSTRACT
A Japanese research team investigated the different polyphenol profiles of the varieties Hallertau Mittelfrueh, Hallertau Tradition, Saazer, Tettnanger, Perle and Cascade. Analysing a range of different polyphenol monomers, they found that the classic European land varieties have more proanthocyanidin whereas the others had more flavonones and prenylflavonoids. These different profiles showed a flavor difference in the brewed beers in regards to sweetness and astringency. A strong correlation to the genetic heritage was also visible. The researchers found that proanthyocyanidin correlates with the fullness of beer while the content of flavonone and prenylflavonoid correlates with the intensity of astringency.

Brewery news USA: Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act endorsed by 51 Senators
United States Senators Joni Ernst (R-IA) and Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) became the 50th and 51st Senators to officially endorse the Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act (S. 1562). This comprehensive and bipartisan bill enjoys wide support from the brewing industry and seeks to recalibrate the current federal excise tax structure for the nation's brewers and beer importers and reform burdensome laws regulating America's brewing industry, PR Newswire reported on September 26.

"It's been 40 years since excise tax has been reformed for American brewers. Now is the time for change," said Bob Pease, President and CEO of the Brewers Association, the not-for-profit trade association dedicated to small and independent American brewers. "As we reach 51 co-sponsors in the Senate, the majority of both chambers of Congress have demonstrated their commitment to recalibrating the federal excise tax. Thanks to the Congressional champions who have worked across the aisle to support the brewers who are significantly contributing to culture and economy. When passed, this legislation would enable thousands of small businesses in every state and congressional district to continue to reinvest in their businesses and create jobs."

Brewery news USA: Trump presidency could be particularly troublesome for Constellation Brands - analyst
Donald Trump has repeatedly promised that if elected president, his tenure would be good for business. But one Wall Street analyst says if the Republican nominee wins the White House, it could be particularly troublesome for Big Beer producer Constellation Brands.

Susquehanna Financial Group food and beverage analyst Pablo Zuanic issued a research report warning a potential Trump presidency would have a “meaningful and negative effect” on Constellation Brands, which generates 70% of earnings from the import of well-known Mexican beer brands, such as Corona, Modelo Especial and Victoria. Zuanic points out that if Trump’s policies were implemented, it could hurt both Constellation Brands’ target customer base (Mexicans that live in the U.S. that would potentially face deportation) and also the crossover appeal of Mexican heritage in beer.

The warning from Zuanic comes as polls have tightened and show Trump in a near dead-heat with Democratic rival Hillary Clinton. The Wall Street analyst says Constellation Brands investors are essentially ignoring any worries about a Trump presidency, as the stock is up about 17% so far in 2016.

“We realize some risks are so terminal but so remote that they cannot be priced in (i.e. a meteor hitting Earth), but we are puzzled by ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Gathering Place Brewing expects to open in Riverwest next spring
In Madison, the "brewmuda triangle" leads from Ale Asylum to Next Door Brewing then House of Brews with several other breweries in between.

Milwaukee is about to get its own brewmuda triangle in Riverwest, the Journal Sentinel reported on September 23.

Gathering Place Brewing expects to open at 811 E. Vienna Ave., next spring, somewhere between Sprecher Brewing, 701 W. Glendale Ave., in Glendale and Lakefront Brewery, 1872 Commerce St., said owner Joe Yeado.

It joins Black Husky Brewing, 909 E. Locust Ave., and Company Brewing, 735 E. Center St., already in the neighborhood.

Yeado is planning a 7-barrel system and a pilot brewery as part of the 4,100 square foot space. The equipment will be purchased in the next few days.

Yeado, a senior researcher at the Public Policy Forum, has been home-brewing and creating beer recipes for a decade now. He won several awards for his beer when he was living in Washington, D.C. When he moved back to Wisconsin last year, he racked up another 14 medals in competitions throughout the Midwest.

He plans to hire a head brewer but expects Gathering Place to focus on Belgian beer styles including Dubbels along with Milk Stouts, Pale Ales and German Hefeweizens. He'll also have ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Common Good Beer Company opens its doors in Scarborough, Toronto
Ontario Beverage Network reports that a new brewery intended to be a “brewing space for contract brewers, an incubator for brewing startups, and for brewers looking for expand production” has officially opened in Scarborough, the easternmost district of Toronto.

Common Good Beer Company has been founded by Jamie Mistry, a veteran brewmaster best known for his previous stints at Amsterdam Brewing and Cool Beer.

While most production at the brewery is focused on the contract projects noted above, Mistry is also brewing a Small Batch Series under the Common Good brand name, with the first in the series – #1: Pilsner – available starting today in the newly opened Common Good retail store.

Common Good is located at 475 Ellesmere Road between Warden Avenue and Birchmount Road in Scarborough.

Brewery news Canada, NB: Moosehead Breweries confirms location of upcoming small batch brewery
Moosehead Breweries has confirmed the location of its upcoming small batch brewery, a project that was originally announced in June, Canadian Beer News reported on September 19.

In a press release issued on September 19, the company announced that the facility will be situated on the Port of Saint John, in a location on Water Street adjacent to Pugsley slip.

Brewery news USA, MO: Rockwell Beer Co. makes official its St. Louis location target
When Andy Hille revealed in April his plans to open Rockwell Beer Co. in St. Louis, he said he was targeting the South Vandeventer Avenue corridor just south of Forest Park Southeast's booming Grove as a potential location, St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported on September 27.

On September 27, Hille made the location official: Rockwell will sign a lease for the Dinzler Equipment building at 1320 South Vandeventer. This will house the brewery's 15-barrel brewhouse and a 1,500-square-foot tasting room.

"It's a chance for us to really stand out over there," Hille tells Hip Hops about the location, which sits on the Botanical Heights side of the border with Forest Park Southeast.

"We originally looked at some spots on Manchester (in the Grove)," Hille says. "That's so far along now, with the space and capital needed for the brewery, it would not work over there. (Urban Chestnut) got in there at the right time."

Once Hille looked through the Dinzler Equipment building, he says, "It was pretty easy to view it as a brewery."

In addition to the building's close proximity to the Grove, Hille notes that its ceilings are high enough to accommodate brewing equipment, and its office space can be converted into the tasting ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Roy Pitz Brewing Co. to open a brewpub in the Callowhill neighborhood of Philadelphia
A Pennsylvania brewing company has inked a deal to open a brewpub and bring their "liquid art" to the Callowhill neighborhood of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Business Journal reported on September 26.

Roy Pitz Brewing Co. of Chambersburg has signed a lease to open a 4,000-square-foot brewpub on the ground floor of 990 Spring Garden St. in an area that is pegged as the Spring Arts district, according to Craig Grossman and Aaron Cohen, partners in Arts and Crafts Holdings.

Initially launching only as a wholesale business, Roy Pitz eventually grew into a microbrewery with a brewpub located above its production brewery in Chambersburg.

The Callowhill location — dubbed Roy Pitz Barrel House — is expected to open in the first quarter of 2017.

The Spring Arts district is made up of artisans and makers, technology and creative businesses, performance venues, and independent food-and-beverage establishments, including local food trucks.

The 990 Spring Garden building is a former industrial building originally designed by architect Rankin and Kellogg.

The property has undergone extensive renovations as loft-style office spaces by Arts and Crafts Holdings. The project is being redeveloped into a space that caters to creative and innovative companies.

“We are makers, and excited to bring our liquid art to this ...More info on site

Brewery news World: AB InBev wins approval for its takeover of SABMiller plc
Anheuser-Busch InBev NV on September 28 won approval for its $100 billion takeover of rival SABMiller PLC, ushering in a new world order for the beer industry.

Shareholders voted overwhelmingly in favor of the $100 billion-plus acquisition, one of the largest in corporate history. AB InBev will drop the SABMiller name and begin trading as a combined company Oct. 11.

It also strengthens rival brewers who were able to scoop up discarded pieces of SABMiller. AB InBev sold off dozens of brands to gain regulatory approval for the deal, including Miller Lite, Peroni and Snow, the world's top-selling beer.

The takeover is just the latest in a string of acquisitions for the Budweiser brewer. Built through the 2004 combination of Brazil's AmBev and Belgium's Interbrew, the company has now bought four major brewers since 2008, including Anheuser-Busch Cos., Mexico's Grupo Modelo and Korea's Oriental Brewing.

Its pursuit of SABMiller began a year ago at a time when Belgium-based AB InBev was struggling to revive Budweiser in the U.S., its biggest market, and facing an economic downturn in Brazil, its second-biggest market.

Acquiring SABMiller eases its reliance on those businesses by adding operations in South America, Australia and Africa. In volume, the deal makes AB InBev ...More info on site

Brewery news EU: Low alcohol and alcohol-free beer drive consumption volumes in Western Europe in 2015
Low alcohol and alcohol-free variants have been major drivers of beer consumption volumes in 2015, and are becoming widely accepted as flavorsome alternatives to regular strength beer, according to consumer insight firm Canadean.

The company’s latest report states that due to the health and wellness trend becoming more entrenched in consumer lifestyles, low alcohol beer volumes in West Europe have been growing by 1 percent annually. Indeed, alcohol-free beer recorded growth of 7 percent in 2015, and is the fastest growing segment by alcohol strength over a seven-year period.

Germany, a country whose alcoholic beer culture is internationally renowned, is a key driver of West Europe’s low and non-alcoholic beer volumes, accounting for over half of low alcohol and alcohol-free beer consumption. Growth in Germany’s low alcohol beer and alcohol-free beer volumes outpaced that of West Europe in 2015, at 5 percent and 3 percent, respectively. This growth can be attributed to the strength of the domestic industry, as Germany boasts the most popular brands in both strength segments, with Erdinger Alkoholfrei (Erdinger) generating the largest alcohol-free volumes, and Oettinger Radler (Oettinger Bier Brauhaus) leading the low alcohol segment. This highlights how German brewers have been effective at capturing market share as ...More info on site

Brewery news Vietnam: Sabeco’s listing on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange approved by government and expected by December
Vietnam's largest beer producer Sabeco has secured government approval to list shares on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange, a government official said on September 27, with a listing expected by December, Reuters reported.

Ho Chi Minh City-based Sabeco, or fully known as the Saigon Beer, Alcohol, Beverage Corp, is valued at $2 billion by the government and is known for its Bia Saigon and 333 beers.

"The approval has been granted," Phan Dang Tuat, head of the Industry and Trade Ministry's enterprise renovation and development committee, told Reuters, confirming earlier state media reports.

"(Sabeco) has 10 to 12 weeks to debut, depending on the consultative contract," he added, referring to Sabeco's plans to hire a consultant firm to advise on the listing.

Brewery news Rwanda: Rwanda’s first craft brewpub to be launched by entrepreneur Josephine Uwineza in collaboration with Canada’s Beau’s All Natural Brewing Company
Rwandan entrepreneur Josephine Uwineza is accustomed to challenging the status quo in her country’s food scene. In 2000, she brought Asian cuisine to the capital city of Kigali with the country’s first Chinese restaurant. Now she has her sights set on disrupting the pub culture in the Central African nation, TakePart.com reported on September 25.

“There’s no craft brewery owned by a woman in Rwanda—not only never owned by a woman, but there’s no craft breweries in Rwanda right now,” Uwineza told TakePart.

Uwineza hopes to fill the void by establishing a brewpub in Kigali, where customers can socialize over a tasting or buy a six-pack to enjoy at home. This week, Uwineza and Beau’s All Natural Brewing Company, based in Canada, announced their partnership with a Kickstarter campaign, seeking roughly $72,000 to purchase a bottling line.

Microbreweries have started cropping up across Africa, gaining popularity in Kenya, Botswana, and South Africa, but they haven’t made their way to Rwanda. The most commonly found beer in Rwanda is Primus, a light lager produced by a Heineken subsidiary.

“There are a few [beer] selections that are the exact same in every single bar, in every single store,” Steve Beauchesne, CEO and cofounder of Beau’s All ...More info on site

SAGO will handle barley imports and more details will be available later this week, SAGO Director-general Ahmed al-Fares said on his twitter account.

Saudi Arabia is one of the world's largest importers of barley.

Brewery news Vietnam: Ministry of Health considering a ban on sales of liquor and beer at night
Vietnam’s Ministry of Health is considering a ban on sales of liquor and beer after either 10:00 p.m. or midnight as officials aim to reduce negative impacts of drinking, VnExpress International reported on September 27.

Nguyen Huy Quang, director of the ministry’s Department of Legal Affairs, told a seminar in Hanoi on September 26 that the ban is part of a new bill on alcohol consumption that is being drafted.

The proposal is based on similar bans already in place in several countries, which the official said have proved effective in curbing the impacts of drinking.

The bill is expected to be put before legislators in 2018.

Vietnam is currently the second biggest consumer of beer and liquor in Southeast Asia, only after Thailand; the 10th largest in Asia; and the 29th largest in the world, Vice Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long said.

“If prevention measures are not applied effectively, Vietnam may become the biggest consumer of beer and liquor in the world, not just the 29th,” Long said.

A new study jointly conducted by the ministry and the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that 77 percent of Vietnamese men drink liquor and beer, nearly half of them drink at hazardous levels.
