HOW MUCH OF MY HOP AROMA GOES INTO THE LINER?

ABSTRACT
This question was addressed by a German research group. They compared different crown liner material with highly hopped beer packaged in bottles. For all measured hop components, the first 20 days showed a high absorption curve of these aroma components in the different liner materials. There was little difference observed between those liner materials but it was shown that the hydrocarbon components are especially susceptible to quick sorption while terpenoids showed minor migration tendency. Drink your beer before the liners get all the delicious hop flavours!

Brewery news USA: AB InBev acquires Texas craft brewer Karbach Brewing
Houston’s local beer scene is stronger than ever, and major players are starting to take note.

The Houston Chronicle reports that Karbach Brewing Company has been acquired by Anheuser-Busch-InBev for an undisclosed sum. The brewery will join the company’s High End unit alongside Chicago’s Goose Island, Colorado’s Breckenridge Brewery, and Seattle’s Elysian Brewing.

According to Karbach owners Ken Goodman and Chuck Robertson, the brewery’s current staff will stay on during the transition, and that they’ll maintain a great deal of independence from the massive beer conglomerate while accessing resources that will allow the company to expand. "The financial piece wasn't that important at the end of the day," Goodman said. "It was the resources."

For the most part, the beer won’t change, but there will be more of it. Karbach is on pace to produce 150,000 barrels of beer by 2019 thanks to their new partnership. Whether or not this acquisition is a good thing for craft beer and the city’s independent brewers, though, remains to be seen.

Brewery news USA, MA: Backlash Beer Company to open a brewery of its own
Backlash Beer Company is getting a home of its own.

The five-year-old brewing company is close to signing a lease on a space in Roxbury that will house its first brick-and-mortar brewery. Until now, the Backlash brand has been contract-brewed at other breweries around the state. Founders Helder Pimentel and Maggie Foley have been looking for a permanent brewing space for more than a year, The Boston Globe reported.

“There are so few potential locations in Boston, but we were really committed to doing something within the city,” says Pimentel. “That’s sort of where our core demographic is.”

Backlash’s new Roxbury home will occupy the bottom floor of a former refrigerator factory, built in the 1800s, about a mile from the South End. The top floor was recently renovated into office space.

“Everyone upstairs is super-excited. Obviously having a brewery in your office is pretty sick,” says Pimentel.

Since launching in 2011, Backlash has reflected the changing craft beer scene, starting up when contract brewing was a popular method of entry. Riding another trend earlier this year, Backlash switched up the packaging of its flagship beers, Ricochet IPA and Groundswell Belgian Blonde, to cans. Helder describes the current climate as challenging.

“Selling through wholesale and distribution ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TN: Half Batch Brewing secures property in Hendersonville
Three years in the making Hendersonville’s first craft brewery will soon be a reality, The Tennessean reported on November 2.

Nate Newton, owner of Half Batch Brewing, announced his company has secured property in the Hazel Path Commons Shopping Center, 393 East Main Street, at the former location of Curves in Hendersonville.

Newton, a former systems analysts for Dollar General Corporation, first approached the Hendersonville Board of Mayor and Alderman three years ago about his idea of opening a brewery.

Since Hendersonville’s municipal codes didn’t allow for a brewery to sell directly to consumers, Newton had to first convince city leaders to amend the city’s municipal code regarding the manufacture of beer. The ordinance passed in November 2014.

“It’s taken a long time to get here but it’s coming together and really we’re excited to be Hendersonville’s first craft brewer,” Newton said on Wednesday.

Since brewing his first batch of beer while in college at Louisiana State University back in 1995, Newton has wanted to his own craft brewery. “I’ve loved doing it from the first batch. It’s the perfect combination of science and art.”

Half Batch Brewing expects delivery of a 10 barrel – about 310 gallon - brewing system from manufacturer Deutsche Beverage ...More info on site

Hops news USA, ME: Maine’s Hop Yard farm starts to ramp up production
Geoff Keating grows a prized plant at the northeastern edge of the country, some 3,000 miles away from the region of America most associated with his crop — hops, Journal Courier reported on November 2.

Americans’ growing thirst for bitter, flavor-packed styles of beer has brought an unprecedented demand for hops, so growers are looking to new places to harvest its flowers.

Hops are used to provide bitterness, aroma and flavor to beer. It the U.S., the vast majority are grown in Washington state, with significant numbers grown in Oregon and Idaho. But hop growers in states such as Michigan, New York and Maine, where Geoff Keating runs the Hop Yard farm in Gorham and Fort Fairfield, are starting to ramp up production.

The growth dovetails with craft beer’s growth, and its passion for using local ingredients.

“As far as Maine-grown hops, anything done at good quality that’s coming out of Maine is being used by brewers,” Keating said. “We have limited supply.”

The demand for hops is high, in part, because of America’s obsession with India pale ales, which use large amounts of hops to create flavors and aromas that recall fruit and pine. Total U.S. hop acreage grew by almost 20 percent to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CT: Two Roads Brewing Company expanding its brewing campus in Stratford
The Two Roads Brewing Company had some exciting news for its fans on November 1, announcing plans for the expansion of its brewing campus in Stratford, Patch.com reported.

“We here at Two Roads Brewing are proud to announce the expansion of our brewing campus with the planned addition of a 25,000 square foot sour and barrel-aging brewery,” the company announced on its website. “Situated on 2.5 acres of newly acquired land adjoining the existing brewery, this $12 million facility will feature a 50 barrel ROLEC brewhouse, foudres, a coolship, and storage for 2000 wood barrels. It will also have a tasting room that can accommodate 120 visitors overlooking a wetlands preserve.

“We plan to expand production of our award-winning line-up including our Tropical Lambic called Hexotic, Framboise Noir Black Raspberry Lambic, Urban Funk Wild Ale (made with yeast from Superstorm Sandy), Worker’s Stomp White Wine Barrel-Aged Saison, all while launching many new styles over the coming years.”

Officials plan to break ground in early 2017 and open in one year or less.

Brewery news Australia: Leaked documents reveal Carlton & United Breweries struggling to meet demand due to low production rates
Leaked documents from Carlton & United Breweries have revealed the brewer is struggling to meet demand due to low production rates, skill shortages and "excessive financial and people cost", as its Victorian factory enters the fifth month of a long-running industrial dispute, The Australian Financial Review reported on November 4.

The maintenance review produced just before the Melbourne Cup belies official CUB statements that the company is not at risk of running out of beer during peak season.

It comes as the plant's senior manager, seen by unions as the architect of the dispute, left the company following a wave of new leadership appointments by CUB, whose parent company SABMiller recently merged with global rival Anheuser-Busch InBev.

CUB's Abbotsford plant in Melbourne has been facing a union picket since June after it refused to renew its maintenance contract covering 55 workers and instead offered to engage them under significantly lower pay and conditions.

The brewer has sought to deny the Electrical Trades Union's claims the plant is facing A$2 million a week in production losses due to lengthy machine stoppages and a lack of skilled maintenance staff.

However, a review of maintenance work prepared October 31 for senior management and seen by AFR Weekend confirmed ...More info on site
