HOW MEANINGFUL ARE IBU VALUES?

ABSTRACT
US researchers looked into several parameters that can influence IBU values such as pH, ABV, alpha acid addition and dry hopping in general. In a pH range from 4.1 to 4.9 they found that below a pH of 4.35 bitterness is perceived less intensely and described with sour and astringent. Above 4.35 bitterness is perceived more intensely and described being lingering. It was also found that dry hopping actually reduces the perceived bitterness while increasing the tested IBU values.

Brewery news USA, AZ: Mesquite River Brewing launched in Scottsdale
A new craft brewery has opened in Scottsdale, Phoenix Business Journal reported on November 8.

Mesquite River Brewing opened this past weekend at 13610 N Scottsdale Road, off Scottsdale and Thunderbird roads.

The space can seat 65, and owners Karl Ivanoff and Fred Misch have produced eight original beers on its 12-beer tap, including pale ale, IPA, stout, amber ale, red ale, and brown ale, according to Mouth by Southwest.

Arizona has roughly 80 craft breweries right now, which pales in comparison to California's 518, or Colorado's 284.

"Arizona has less breweries than the entirety of San Diego County," said Barry Tingleff, sales manager for Phoenix's SunUp Brewing Co. "We're seen as the up-and-comer. The spotlight is on Arizona right now."

Brewery news Canada, ON: Square Brew Inc. looks to open in Goderich
Wetting one’s whistle may become a little more convenient in Goderich as a new craft brewery looks to open shop here in the near future, Goderich Signal Star reported on November 10.

Alex Menary, president of Square Brew Inc., told council Oct. 24 that he is looking to open his brewery at 430 Parsons Court with a retail store and tasting room.

However, in order for Square Brew to serve 355 ml glasses of beer at the site, it needs a Manufacturer’s Limited Liquor Sales License. And as part of the application process to the Alcohol and gaming Commission of Ontario, an approval letter is required from the municipality.

“The license that we’ve applied for allows us to sell 12 ounce glasses of the beer that we make. We can only sell our beer. We can’t sell other brewery’s beers and we can’t sell any other types of liquor,” he told council, adding, “It’s a license that we need” to sell beer and offer samples.

Menary said he is excited and “hoping” to be a medium-size, start up production brewery with taps starting to flow by spring.

Councillor Matt Hoy said he had an opportunity to speak with Menary earlier about his business and is ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AZ: Mother Road Brewing Company taking major step to expand operations
After five years making beer out of its downtown Flagstaff location, Mother Road Brewing Company is taking a major step to expand its operations, Brewbound.com reported.

Last week, owners Michael and Alissa Marquess signed a lease on an 8,000-square-foot production facility about a mile east of the historic Mikes Pike brewery. This gives supporters a lot to celebrate for Mother Road’s 5th anniversary on November 17th.

The new space, located at 1300 E. Butler Ave., will house a 20-barrel brewhouse and two 80-barrel and 120-barrel fermenters with a potential total capacity of 20,000 barrels per year. That’s five times the 4,000 barrels per year the Mother Road crew is currently able to crank out of the 3,000-square-foot Mikes Pike brewery. A tasting room and patio are in the plans as well, so visitors are encouraged to stop by for a pint.

The total budget for buildout and equipment is $1 million and the goal is to have the doors open by April 2017.

“It’s going to give us a great ability to have flexibility and a better guest experience at the original tap room while increasing the quality, consistency and output of beer at new production facility,” Michael said. “We’ll be making ...More info on site

Brewery news USA & Mexico: Mexican beer stock feeling impact of US elections
Mexico played a big role in Donald Trump’s bid for the Presidency of the United States. One of Trump’s earliest and most popular schemes involved building a wall between the U.S. and Mexico to curb illegal immigration, and he promised to make Mexico pay for it. But it wasn’t just Trump’s voters who were paying attention to his plans. The stock of Constellation Brands, which imports Corona and other Mexican beers into the United States, was tightly correlated with the US race for the presidency. When the FBI recently decided to look at more of Hillary Clinton’s emails, Constellation’s stock dropped. When FBI Director James Comey announced no charges would be brought, it climbed right back up, surging with the promise of a Clinton presidency, VinePair reported on November 11.

These trends were actually fairly consistent with the markets overall. But things changed the day after Trump won the election. While U.S. markets rallied to record closing highs on November 9th, Constellation saw its stock collapse, closing down nearly 8%, off of even deeper lows.

It would be an ironic twist, since Mexican beer has been enjoying intense popularity in the U.S. in recent years. In 2015, Corona was the most popular ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Helicon Brewing to open its doors November 12
Beer is beer to many people, but certainly not to Chris Brunetti, The Almanac reported on November 10.

He’ll pour a glass of lager, his own recipe, and pulls no punches about how it stacks up to the biggest of beverage brands.

“It’s all malt, hops, water and yeast. There are no preservatives, and there’s no rice or corn,” he said. “If those macro brews used all malt and no chemicals, this is what their beer would taste like.”

Aficionados can taste for themselves as of Nov. 12 with the opening of Brunetti’s Helicon Brewing on Union Avenue in Oakdale, where Best Feeds’ Joy Dog Food factory once operated. His Munich Helles golden European lager is the featured beverage to start.

“One of the reasons we’re showcasing this beer as one of our first brews,” Brunetti said, “is because we expect a lot of people to stop in and say, ‘Hey, I drink Bud/Miller/Coors. What do you have that’s comparable?’”

The more adventurous of visitors also can try three types of ales: American pale, India pale and blonde.

Brunetti, a South Fayette Township resident, started brewing at home in 2000 and soon found he had the barley-and-hops equivalent of a green thumb.

“I got pretty serious about ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Hops & Grain to move its brewing operation to new location in San Marcos
Hops & Grain, the Austin-based brewery that announced in June plans to open a taproom and brewing facility in San Marcos, has signed a lease at 110 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, the site of the former county justice center, Community Impact Newspaper reported on November 10.

The company plans to have its brewing operation running by August or September, said Sheila Garcia, Hops & Grain marketing manager. The opening of a tasting room in the same complex will follow in October, she said.

Owner Josh Hare said the company’s employees have always felt “a really deep tie and connection” to San Marcos. Many employees attended Texas State University or lived in the city.

The San Marcos/New Braunfels area is the first market outside of Austin the company entered. Hare said the demand for the company’s beers—which include Zoe, a pale lager; Porter Culture, a porter; and Green Room, an India pale ale—caught his attention when Hops & Grain began distribution in the area in 2015.

“It’s been overwhelming,” Hare said. “We definitely can’t make enough beer to keep up.”

Hare said the San Marcos facility will be a full production brewery similar to the company’s Austin location. He anticipates the tasting room to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Pryes Brewing Co. opening a brewery and taproom on the banks of the Mississippi River
Pryes Brewing Co. is opening a brewery and taproom on the banks of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, just blocks from the recently announced First Ave amphitheater project, the Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal reported on November 10.

For the last couple years, Pryes Brewing has distributed its IPA, Miraculum, to 50 bars and restaurants in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.

The brewery, planned for 1401 W. River Rd. N., will have 13,000 square feet of space. Co-founder Ben Schuster says half of that will be dedicated to a taproom, which will have a full kitchen available to pop-up restaurants and food trucks.

"We didn’t want to compete with the restaurant scene, we wanted to complement it," he said.

The brewery will have a front patio, a feather bowling lane and a large parking area that can be used for concerts and events. The brewery also hopes to take advantage of a nearby bike trail and kayak rental program by the river.

Co-founder Mike Corneille says the project will cost a little under $3 million. Pryes Brewing has raised over $750,000 from equity investors and the rest from banks and other sources. It's continuing to raise additional funds from investors in the Minneapolis-St. Paul community.

Brewery news USA, OH: Multiple Brewing opens its doors in Nelsonville, OH
Athens County’s newest craft beer brewery opened its doors near Nelsonville’s Public Square on November 5, Athens NEWS reported.

Jason Warren, owner of Multiple Brewing at 82 W. Washington St., said on November 5 that he wants to introduce craft beer to Nelsonville while improving the economic climate of the city. His brewery is the third brewery to open in Athens County since mid-2015, when Little Fish Brewery and Devil’s Kettle Brewing both opened their doors in the city of Athens. The breweries join Athens mainstay Jackie O’s.

Warren said he is excited to join the other breweries, and hopes Multiple’s opening will help encourage more tourists to visit.

“I think that (beer tourism) has been a big thing for Athens County,” he said, noting that tourism dollars will help Nelsonville grow.

Warren said in order to draw local customers, he’s offering simple, flavorful beer styles that will be accessible to local light beer drinkers who may not be the typical consumers of craft beer. With four taps, the brewery currently has:

• Variable IPA, a 6.1 percent single hop IPA

• Absolute Clementine, a 5.7 percent pale ale made with clementine rinds and juice.

• Rational Rye Porter, a 6.4 percent “light-bodied” dark porter made with ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TN: Johnson City Brewing Company to host opening event on November 12
For several months, a wide-ranging team of interested parties has been helping the people of the downtown-based Johnson City Brewing Company move toward the grand opening event that will take place this weekend, the Johnson City Press reported on November 10.

Since 2014, when the brewery first opened, its location was in the floor level of the King’s Centre. But after outgrowing this space, Johnson City Brewing Company will be now operating out of a recently refurbished tap room at 257 E. Main St., which is located at the intersection of East Main and South Roan streets.

And that work refurbished can’t be emphasized enough, as two of the community collective brewery’s 39 owners, Kat and Eric Latham, worked with local artisan builders in building a special atmosphere for the new spot.

Kat Latham said she had a special vision for the tap room, and now that it’s complete, she can safely say her wildest dreams and expectations have been exceeded by Reuben Robertson and Brian Scotka.

“It’s beyond amazing,” she said.

This duo worked together — Robertson with the fine woodworking and Scotka on the metal — using many reclaimed materials from Johnson City Brewing Company’s production facility to make the entire bar, chairs, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Barrel Theory Beer Company expected to open in early 2017 in St. Paul’s
A team of brewing industry veterans announced plans to open their own brewery in St. Paul’s Lowertown. Barrel Theory Beer Company is expected to open in early 2017 on the corner of 7th Street East and Wacouta in the bustling east end of St. Paul’s downtown, .

The brewery and taproom is a partnership between Surly Brewing Company’s former director of technology Brett Splinter, former Surly brewer Timmy Johnson, and CPA Todd Tibesar, who will come on full time next year. Though they’ll be focused on filling their beautiful basement cellar with barrels in coming years, big barrel-aged beers aren’t the only styles you’ll find at Barrel Theory.

“We’re really excited to have a broad spectrum of beers,” explains Splinter. “We’ll make some unapologetically hoppy IPAs, we’re also going to be doing a lot of barrel-aging, but what I believe our calling card is really going to be is going to be what we do with kettle sour: Berliner Weisse, fruited Berliner Weisse.”

The 10-barrel brewhouse will be located adjacent to a 90-seat taproom inside a beautiful 4,000-square-foot exposed-limestone space. While Barrel Theory won’t have a kitchen of its own, the owners plan to have a food service window cut directly into the ...More info on site

Brewery news World: AB InBev left out of European markets’ “Trump rally”
AB InBev has been left out of European markets' "Trump rally," as investor worry about the mega-brewer's exposure to the U.S. and Mexican markets, but some analysts have argued the concern is overdone, TheStreet reported on November 10.

Multi-national consumer stocks have performed below market benchmarks since Donald Trump's surprise victory amid bets the President-Elect's tough stance on trade agreements and a possible repeal of NAFTA could make life more difficult for international companies.

AB InBev lost 1.41% on November 10 to within a €1 distance of its 52-week low of €99.96 each, even as broader European markets rallied. Shares in the company have lost more than 11% since the beginning of 2016 as it completed its $100 million acquisition of SABMiller.

Investors have questioned whether AB InBev, which owns Mexico's leading brewer - Corona-maker Grupo Modelo - and controls 63% of the country's beer market, will suffer from a slowdown in the North American economy as a result of potentially frosty relations with the next U.S. President.

Analysts at London-based Liberum, however, argue that concern might be over-exaggerated, noting that Mexico has shrunk to just 7% of AB InBev's group sales since the SABMiller takeover.

The Mexican peso stabilized on November 9, ...More info on site

Brewery news EU: Poland's state-run insurer PZU not interested in AB InBev’s beer brands
Poland's state-run insurer PZU is not interested in buying a group of beer brands being sold by Anheuser-Busch InBev, which include Pilsner Urquell in the Czech Republic and Tyskie and Lech in Poland, PZU's CEO said on November 10.

"We do not intend to invest equity in this sector. We do not aim to be a shareholder in beer assets, as we focus on our core business," Michal Krupinski told a news conference.

At least six indicative offers have been submitted by industry players and buyout funds for the Anheuser-Busch InBev beer brands in central and Eastern Europe, sources said on November 8. Polish juice maker Maspex Wadowice Group, Hungary's MOL and and PZU submitted a joint offer, the sources said.

Brewery news The Philippines: Craft beer maker Palaweño Brewery set on expansion next year
As the craft beer industry in the Philippines begins to grow, the first and only brewery of artisanal beer in Palawan is set to share its taste of success to more Filipinos through expansion, the Manila Bulletin reported on November 11.

Palaweño Brewery is a small, wooden brewery and taphouse that makes 300 cases of craft beer a month. It serves craft beer of all sorts—American amber ale, Belgian wheat beer, German Honey Kolsch to name a few.

The brewery’s part-owner, Ayah Javier, said that it’s only open from 1:00 p.m. and closes at 9:00 p.m. to give way to bars, restaurants and hotels that carry their beer.

Javier said that the place is frequented by more foreign tourists than local tourists, perhaps because that although the craft beer industry is slowly growing, it is still relatively new to Filipinos.

“When we started, there were only five (craft beer breweries) now, there are 33,” Javier said.

“We’re in the works for expanding,” she said, clarifying that this did not mean branching out but rather increasing its production rate from 300 cases of beer to 1,200 cases by March 2017.

She also hopes to be able to distribute their craft beer in more establishments and cities. Their ...More info on site
