SPEBU - A NEW ALTERNATIVE METHOD FOR BITTERNESS?

ABSTRACT
A combination of Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) to the BU method was established already in 2011 by Wietstock. Now after further optimisation and more ring studies, this method is presented by a U.S. researcher team. The accuracy is comparable to current methodology and with no need for iso-octane is more environmentally friendly and also economical.

Brewery news Canada, BC: A-Frame Brewing now open in Squamish, British Columbia
After many years of being a single brewery town, Squamish, British Columbia now has a second hometown beer option with the opening of A-Frame Brewing this past weekend, Canadian Beer News reported on December 12.

Founded by husband and wife Jeff Oldenborger and Caylin Glazier, A-Frame has launched with four beers crafted by brewmaster Andrew Sawyer, all of them having names inspired by the many small lakes in the Squamish region – Okanagan Lake Cream Ale (5.3% abv, 15 IBU), Elfin Lakes Belgian Ale (5.2% abv, 36 IBU), Sproat Lake Dry Hopped Pale Ale (5.2% abv, 38 IBU), and Magic Lake Porter (4.1% abv [but “will be 5-5.2% in future batches], 30 IBU).

Located at 38927 Queens Way in Squamish, A-Frame features a 30 seat tasting room and store where its beers are available by the glass and in a flight, as well as in 32 and 64 oz growlers to take home.

A-Frame Brewing is open from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday and Thursday, 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Friday, 12:00 noon to 9:00 PM on Saturday, and 12:00 noon to 6:00 PM on Sunday.

Brewery news USA, NY: Ellicottville Brewing Company clears one of final hurdles to open a brewery in Little Valley
Little Valley is getting a concoction of new brews. Like Blueberry Wheat, 2 Brothers, and Stainless Steel IPA — three beers produced by Ellicottville Brewing Company.

EBC has cleared one of its final hurdles with its plans to open a brewery, tasting room, museum and outdoor concert venue, Buffalo Business First reported on December 8.

The County of Cattaraugus Industrial Development Agency’s directors approved tax breaks for the planned $5.5 million project that will bring new life to a vacant building along Second Street in Little Valley. As many as 30 people will be hired for the project.

“This is significant, in a lot of different and important ways, for Little Valley,” said Corey Wiktor, County of Cattaraugus IDA executive director. Little Valley is less than 10 miles from Ellicottville.

Wiktor said the project qualifies for tax breaks because it is manufacturing based but also has a tourism, agri-business and adaptive re-use attributes.

Work on the building, last used by Salamanca Beverage Co. as a distribution center, is extensive including roof and siding repairs, parking lot improvements and electrical upgrades - all needed before the beer making equipment can be installed.

Unlike Ellicottville Brewing Co.’s locations in Ellicottville, Fredonia and Bemus Point, the focus on the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: The Georgia Brewing Company hopes to move brewing operations from garage to historic building in downtown Valdosta
A Georgia beer maker hopes to move its brewing operations from a garage to a historic building in downtown Valdosta.

The Valdosta Daily Times reports the Georgia Brewing Company is working with city officials to renovate the city's century-old waterworks building and turn it into a craft brewery. The Valdosta city council granted the business a conditional permit on December 8.

Owner Chris Jones says he wouldn't be allowed to sell beer at the downtown site. But the brewery would offer tours and small samples of its wares. Beer made there would be sold through distributors.

While small beer makers have taken off in other parts of the state, Jones says Valdosta sits in the middle of a "craft-beer desert" with the nearest craft breweries in Macon and Savannah.

Brewery news USA, AL: Two new breweries scheduled to open in Mobile next year
The port city of Mobile is getting into the craft beer boom.

WKRG-TV reports that two new breweries are scheduled to open next year in Mobile.

The former Crystal Ice Co. warehouse is being renovated to house Haint Blue Brewing. A few streets away, an old Goodyear Tire Center is being transformed into Serda Brewing Co.

Keith Sherill says he hopes to get Haint Blue Brewing open in early 2017, and the other company is expected to open in the summer.

The city’s board of adjustment recently approved changes to get both breweries off the ground.

The Alabama Brewer’s Guild currently lists more than two dozen small breweries operating in the state, but none is in Mobile. Recent changes in state alcohol laws have allowed breweries to flourish.

Brewery news Canada, PE: Moth Lane Brewing to be the first microbrewery in Prince Edward Island’s Prince County
Former lobster fisherman Eric Wagner liked making beer so much as a hobby, the self-taught brewmaster decided to make it into a business, CBC.ca reported on December 12.

Moth Lane Brewing in Murray Road, P.E.I., just outside Tyne Valley, will be the first microbrewery in Prince County.

Although it's faced delay after delay for months, Moth Lane is finally poised to open before Christmas.

"Everything here is local, everybody that worked here was local," said Wagner.

"There's going to be a lot of people come and try it," he said. "The beer's going to be different than what they're used to."

The building is a former shellfish business Wagner opened about 25 years ago and ran for several years before he became too busy fishing and managing a local co-op.

"I used to drive by this place quite often thinking, what the heck am I going to do?" he said.

"When I came up with the micro-brewing idea, it lightened my heart a little bit, knowing I'll put this building back to use," he said. He's expanded it, adding a large deck where customers can enjoy their drinks in summer along with the beautiful view of Conway Narrows on the Island's North Shore.

Brewery news USA, CO: Months away from tentative February opening Zuni Street Brewing Company launches crowdfunding campaign
The best friends-turned-brewing partners at Zuni Street Brewing Company in the Highlands want customers to buy a mug or put their name on a fermenting tank before they even down their first pint, BusinessDen reported on December 11.

Now just months away from a tentative February opening of their brewery and taproom at 29th and Zuni, co-founders T.J. Slattery and Willy Truettner have launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter seeking $20,000.

“As a startup, there are always things that pop up cost-wise, so Kickstarter is a great way to help cash flow through opening,” said Slattery.

The idea is to tap into enthusiasm from friends and family who don’t have the money to buy into the business, he said, but can afford to pitch in as little as $5 on Kickstarter in exchange for access to early perks.

“(We’re) able to reach out to that group and say, here’s your opportunity to put your name on a tank, or table chair, or barstool,” said Slattery.

The pair is also using Kickstarter to roll out its Zuni Street Mug Club, where members get a ceramic mug allowing them to buy 20-ounce pours for the price of a pint, plus a tee shirt, two pint glasses and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MS: Biloxi Brewing Co. almost moved into its permanent brewery in Biloxi
It's been a long process since they brewed their first beer, but the four founders of Biloxi Brewing Co. are almost moved into their permanent brewery in Biloxi, The Sun Herald reported on December 10.

To get their craft beers into the hands of thirsty customers, the partners contracted to brew batches at Lazy Magnolia Brewing Co. in Kiln. But soon they'll be turning out product from 186 Bohn St. The brewery will be in what had been the Professional Drug pharmacy warehouse, a short walk from MGM Stadium between Howard and Division Streets.

"Everything we bought for (Biloxi Brewing Co.) is brand new, from American Beer Equipment in Lincoln, Nebraska," said Mark Cowley, co-owner and co-founder.

"We're projected to do 24,000 barrels our first year, and we will eventually start ramping that up," Cowley said. That equates to about 48,000 half-barrel kegs.

After three years, Biloxi Brewing plans to install more fermenters and again expand production.

The 11,000-square-foot converted warehouse will have offices and a laboratory for trying out yeasts and test brews. There's also an old vault, which Biloxi Brewing plans to convert into a barrel-aging room.

Also planned is a 100-square-foot tasting room and 950 square feet of cooler space for storing beer ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: ThumbCoast Brewing Company announces permanent closing
ThumbCoast Brewing Company in Port Huron announced "the permanent closing" of the business in a Facebook post on December 8, Port Huron Times Herald Reported.

"The challenges that we’ve faced throughout 2016, especially those which had (a) significant impact on revenue during the months of May and June, have finally caught up with us and we can no longer move forward," it stated.

The city of Port Huron spent seven weeks in May and June rebuilding the East Quay parking lot that accommodated most ThumbCoast patrons. At the end of May, ThumbCoast owner Dennis Doyle said, "The work has definitely impacted our business. We have fewer customers. Some complain about not having any place to park — it’s what you would expect — nobody is happy about it.”

The December 8’s Facebook announcement did not divulge further reasoning behind the decision to close the brewery, 330 Quay St. in downtown Port Huron. A sign on the door in the evening read, "closed."

But it thanked local residents for support and added that, despite efforts to bring culture and a "true craft beer experience" to the city, "we simply did not find our niche here in Port Huron."

Doyle bought the brewing company and restaurant two ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Federal government approves AB InBev’s acquisition of Texas-based Karbach Brewing Company
The federal government has approved Anheuser-Busch InBev’s acquisition of Texas-based Karbach Brewing Company, Brewbound reported on December 12.

“We have received federal antitrust approval to close our transaction with Karbach Brewing Co., which we anticipate will occur in the next several weeks,” Adam Warrington, senior director of communications for AB InBev’s The High End division, said in a note to reporters.

The global beer titan announced the purchase of Karbach, the fastest-growing craft brewery in the Lone Star State, on Nov. 3. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, and there was some question as to how the U.S. Department of Justice would react to AB InBev acquiring another brewery after the government agency vowed to “carefully scrutinize any future craft acquisitions” in the wake of an investigation into the purchase of Devils Backbone.

Earlier this year, Deputy Assistant Attorney General Juan Arteaga said the division would “consider whether these transactions, either singularly or collectively, are likely to harm competition by, among other things, giving AB InBev the ability to prevent its craft rivals from effectively getting their products to the market.”

In a conversation with Brewbound, High End president Felipe Szpigel said he anticipated receiving approval of the transaction in late 2016 or ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: AB InBev extends partnership with C&C Group
Magners producer C&C is outsourcing the distribution of its cider portfolio through an expansion of a deal with AB InBev, The Drinks Business reported on December 12.

The global beer giant will take on distribution of C&C’s cider brands, which includes its flagship Irish cider brand, as well as Blackthorne, its ‘craft’ cider line Chaplin & Cork’s among others.

As part of the reciprocal agreement, C&C Group will continue brewing, kegging, bottling some of AB InBev products at the C&C Wellpark Brewery in Glasgow, including Stella Artois and Beck’s, which it will distribute across the UK and Republic of Ireland.

The two companies have worked together since 2009 and Jason Warner, President of AB InBev UK & Ireland, said he was happy to see the strengthening of business ties in what had proved to be a “close, strategic partnership”.

“The new and extended contracts will utilise AB InBev’s world class distribution network to bring people in England, Wales, Channel Island and the Isle of Man more choice in the cider category. Brewery news UK: Heineken in advanced talks to buy British pub company Punch Taverns
Heineken is in advanced talks to buy Punch Taverns, Punch said on December 14, but the Dutch brewer faces competition from a higher rival bid from a fund backed by one of the British pub company's founders, Reuters reported.

Shares in Punch, Britain's second-biggest pub operator, jumped as much as 39 percent on Wednesday, December 14 after it said it had received a "proposal" from Patron Capital Advisers, working with Heineken, about a possible cash offer of 174 pence per share, and "an approach" from Emerald Investment Partners about a possible cash offer at 185 pence per share.

Punch said it was in "advanced discussions" with Patron and Heineken and in "discussions" with Emerald. Officials for Patron and Heineken declined to comment.

Emerald confirmed that it had made a proposal about a possible 185 pence per share offer and said it currently held 2.2 percent of Punch's shares.

Emerald's founder, Alan McIntosh, is the former Punch finance director who helped to build up the company through a series of acquisitions alongside entrepreneur Hugh Osmond.

Heineken's offer values Punch's equity at about 386 million pounds ($488.95 million) while Emerald's offer would equate to a 410 million pound valuation, according to Reuters calculations.

Punch said that both proposals ...More info on site

Brewery news Kyrgyzstan: All-woman craft brewery little short of revolution in Bishkek’s drinking culture
Tucked away in an unlikely spot, wedged between a domino club popular with Turks and a Soviet-built apartment block, is a treat for beer-lovers in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan’s capital, EurasiaNet reported on December 9. Save the Ales, a microbrewery set up by a Kyrgyz-Kazakh pair, Aida Musulmankulova and Arzu Kurbanova, may be small and spartan. But what it is doing to Bishkek’s drinking culture is little short of revolutionary. While bland imported lagers and watery local brews have long been the norm, Save the Ales is turning out its own homemade craft brews, borrowing from a trend that has established deep roots in the United States and elsewhere. “Wherever we have traveled, we have always tried good beer,” said Musulmankulova. Around three years ago, she and her partner, Kurbanova, decided to take the plunge. “We decided to brew it [ourselves]. We learned everything from the Internet. It wasn’t as difficult as we thought.” Craft beers tend to be more experimental than classic European-style lagers and pilsners, and are brewed in kegs rather than casks, as is the case with traditional British real ale. And it is not cheap either. Save the Ales charges an eye-watering $2.80 per glass, a sum way ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: AB InBev’s first year on Johannesburg stock exchange about to end well down on its debut price
Anheuser-Busch InBev is in line to end its first year on the Johannesburg stock exchange well down on its debut price, according to a report.

The company, which listed on South Africa's main bourse on 15 January ahead of its US$103 bln takeover of SABMiller, is down about 27% in the year so far, South Africa's Business Day said on December 15. Accounting for currency fluctuations, which have hampered trading in South Africa this year, the AB InBev stock is down 15% in dollar terms.

AB InBev has been hit by weakness in a number of markets this year including Brazil, where a third-quarter volumes drop dragged down the nine-month performance. Analysts have also highlighted a stalled US as well as pressure in China and Mexico.

The SABMiller takeover was targeted at expanding AB InBev's presence in Africa. The Budweiser owner's listing on the Johannesburg stock exchange was partly to show the brewer's commitment to the market and to appease South African anti-trust regulators.

At the time, CEO Carlos Brito said the listing "will provide us with access to the South African investor base and broaden participation in AB InBev's strong prospects for future growth".
