IS THE PROFILE OF HOP POLYPHENOLS VARIETY SPECIFIC?
ABSTRACT
Yes, it is. At least that is the conclusion of a Japanese
research team. They investigated six different hop
varieties from Germany, Czech Republic and USA from
three different crop years. The polyphenol profiles of all
varieties show that the composition of monophenols,
flavonols, flavanones, prenylflavonoids, flavanols,
proanthocyanidins is different for each crop year but
within limits. The composition of the polyphenols
correlates with the genetic background of the
varieties. Further they found that the content of each
polyphenol in beer was similar to that in hops used.
Fresh beer samples using six hop varieties showed
flavour differences for sweetness and astringency. The
data suggest that the contents of proanthocyanidin is important for the intensity of sensory fullness while
the content of flavanones and prenylflavonoids are in
context with astringency.

While beer consumption in the United States fell during the beginning of the recession and again at the end of 2013, it is on the rise again and beer remains the most popular alcoholic beverage in the U.S. Americans may continue to choose beer over other types of alcoholic beverages, although the brand of beer they will choose is less predictable. Consumer preferences regularly change in response to new ad campaigns, price, or for no detectable reason, USA Today reported on December 17.
Sales of once unassailable beers such as Budweiser and Miller High Life have declined by more than 25% from 2010 through 2015. Meanwhile, sales of such beers as Modelo Especial and Stella Artois — once more marginal brands in the United States — have more than doubled. Based on five-year increases in U.S. sales, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the 10 fastest growing beers in America.
Premium brands such as Michelob Ultra and Coors Banquet, as well as imports, especially from Mexico, dominate the list of beer brands with increasing shipments. USA, TX: Lazarus Brewing to be launched in Austin on December 24
|
For pastor and beer-loving entrepreneur Christian Cryder, Christmas is coming in a big way. His brewpub, three years in the making, is opening its doors for the first time on Dec. 24 in a prime location on East Sixth Street in Austin, austin360 reported on December 20.
Lazarus Brewing will close briefly on Christmas Day and Dec. 26, but starting Dec. 27, Cryder hopes to lure customers into the homey space morning, day and night by serving coffee and breakfast tacos in the a.m., beer and more tacos in the p.m. He drew inspiration for his project from other local brewpubs in town, like the ABGB and Jester King Brewery, which offer so much more than beer.
But beer, of course, remains the centerpiece at those places and at Lazarus, too.
“In figuring out the design for this place, we wanted it to be clear that it’s not a restaurant serving beer,” he said. “We have the tanks visible behind the bar to make it clear that this is a brewery that happens to serve good food and coffee.”

USA, KY: 3rd Turn Brewing to build its second facilityin Oldham County
|
A Jeffersontown brewery will continue its trend of bringing local beer to underserved areas with the opening of a second location in Oldham County, The Courrier-Journal reported on December 19.
3rd Turn Brewing - which celebrated its first year anniversary in September - announced plans on December 19 to build a brewhouse and small farm on four acres of property in Crestwood.
The brewery will be the first in the county, which was voted wet last December.
"When we were looking at opening a second location, Oldham County was at the very top of our list," co-owner Greg Hayden said in a press release. "We cannot wait to have more outdoor space for beer gardens, grow some of our own ingredients for beer and introduce the county to our locally and on premise brewed ales."
Several elected officials joined the 3rd Turn owners December 19 to break ground on a 4,000-square-foot facility, which will hold a four-to-seven-barrel brewhouse and 20-tap taproom.
The facility, located at 6300 Old Lagrange Road, will consist of existing buildings left by a former nursery that the owners plan to renovate using reclaimed products, much like they did with a former church in Jeffersontown.

USA, AZ: Richter Aleworks becomes Peoria’s third brewery
|
Peoria has gotten a third brewery.
Richter Aleworks opened Dec. 9 at 8279 W. Lake Pleasant Parkway. The 2,800-square-foot brewery opened in a former dentist's office and boutique, according to The Arizona Republic.
The new brewery will join Freak'N Brewing Co. and Peoria Artisan Brewery as the West Valley city's third brewery.
It has a seven-barrel brewing system and 24 beers on tap, which includes two collaboration beers with Scottsdale's McFate Brewing Co. and Phoenix's North Mountain Brewing Co.
Other beers come from Arizona breweries such as Huss Brewing Co. and Dragoon Brewing Co.
Arizona's brewery scene is seen as an up-and-comer: though it has less breweries than San Diego County, the craft beer industry has its eyes on the state.
"The spotlight is on Arizona right now," Barry Tingleff, SunUp Brewing Co.'s sales manager, told the Phoenix Business Journal in October.
Phoenix was named a top city for homebrewers by the American Homebrewers Association recently.

USA, NY: Equilibrium Brewery cuts the ribbon on its new facility in Middletown
|
Craft brewer Equilibrium Brewery was joined by the Mid-Hudson Regional Economic Development Council to cut the ribbon on its new facility in a former meat-packing facility in Middletown, Westfair Online reported on December 19.
The brewery, expected to open to the public in early 2017, will feature a tasting room and a restaurant, though Equilibrium Brewery will focus mainly on producing beers for distribution. Equilibrium beers are available in craft beverage stores and bars in Long Island, New York City, the mid-Hudson region and the Capital District.
The brewery was named a priority project by the economic development council in 2014. To encourage the brewery to launch its manufacturing operations in New York state, the council awarded it a $204,000 capital grant.
Equilibrium Brewery founder and CEO Ricardo Petroni said the council supported the company’s initiative from its inception and provided the push to make the project a reality.
“Downtown Middletown is a perfect match for us,” Petroni said. “It was clear from the start how the brewery could work synergistically with the ongoing revitalization efforts in a beneficial way.”

USA, VA: Smartmouth Brewing Company scheduled to start construction in Norfolk in April 2017
|
By next year, Oceanfront beachgoers will be able to finish the day with a Smartmouth brew poured fresh from the source. No driving to Norfolk necessary, the Virginian-Pilot reported on December 21.
Smartmouth Brewing Company will take over an old U.S. post office building at 313 32nd St. in the resort area. The brewery and tasting room is scheduled to start construction in April and open in the summer, Smartmouth founder Porter Hardy IV said.
A gym, called Evofit, and another business, First Data, currently operate out of the building, which is owned by The Runnymede Corp. Evofit is leasing the space. Mike Fine, a commercial property manager with Runnymede, and Hardy both confirmed that Smartmouth will be leasing the building.
The Virginia Beach Development Authority voted on December 20 to award Smartmouth a $20,000 Economic Development Investment Program grant for its expansion. All grants from the Development Authority are performance-based. Smartmouth will receive the grant money for its capital investment in the project.

USA, TN: OddStory Brewing Co to open in Chattanooga on New Year's Eve
|
After months of work, OddStory Brewing Co. is opening on New Year's Eve, Nooga.com reported on December 20.
"We are going to have an anniversary that falls on NYE," co-owner Bryan Boyd said. "Every New Year's Eve can also be an anniversary celebration for us."
On New Year's Eve, the brewery will be open from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Owners are having an invite-only soft opening Dec. 29.
Bryan and his son, Jay Boyd, along with Jay's wife, Emily, have been the driving forces behind the new Martin Luther King Jr. business.
Architecture firm Cogent Studio created the design of the building, which had been vacant for about 20 years. Matt Sears of Haskel Sears Design is helping bring the interior to life with woodwork, among other features.
The brewery's regular hours will be Tuesday through Thursday from 4 to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from noon to 11 p.m.

USA, MN: Shakopee Brew Hall’s two owners looking to open it in 2017

When two good friends spend most of their Saturdays together brewing beer in a garage for five years, some wild ideas are bound to pop up. For Ryan Lindquist and Damon Schuler of Shakopee, one of those ideas will be coming to life in 2017 when they open a craft brew hall in downtown Shakopee, SW News Media reported on December 17.
“I don’t want to abuse the word, but we’ve had a passion for brewing beer for a while,” said Lindquist. “We’ve always had a business plan; we’ve always had a vision.”
In fact, that vision began brewing right along with their first batch of beer.
“We did a couples weekend to Stillwater [with our wives], and we did a winery tour and a couple of breweries, too,” explained Schuler. “I was not happy in the job I was at. Both of us were like, ‘Gosh, we could do this.’ I think a month later we were buying our first home brew kit and brewing in my garage. That was five years ago.”
Schuler’s background in accounting and matter-of-fact way of approaching problems combined with Lindquist’s creativity and sparkplug personality make the pair a bit of an odd couple, but they know that.

USA, IA: Peace Tree Brewing to open its East Village brewery on January 1

Peace Tree Brewing will open its East Village tap room and brewery on Jan. 1 in a remodeled Quonset hut, DesMoinesRegister.com reported on December 19.
The Knoxville-based company will be serving its popular brews in addition to some new varieties at the East Village location, 317 E. Court Ave., said owner Megan McKay. The taproom will have 25 taps that will include five barrel aged beers that the company has been stocking away for the opening, she said. It will also offer root beer and a guest cider brew, she said.
The full brewing system will get underway soon with the East Village brewery making sour beer, a tart brew that is gaining in popularity. Brewing sour beers requires a specific type of bacteria. To safeguard against infecting other batches with the bacteria, it is best to make sour beers in a separate facility, McKay has said.
The 1,500-square foot taproom will seat about 100 inside and 30 more on the patio when Iowa weather permits, she said. There’s also a semi-private space for holding events.

USA, NY: Threes Brewing East beer production facility site plan approved by Southold Town Planning Board
|
The Southold Town Planning Board on December 19 unanimously approved the site plan for a Threes Brewing East beer production facility in Cutchogue, Suffolk Times reported.
The Brooklyn-based brewery intends to lease a proposed steel building at the Cutchogue Business Center on Cox Lane for production purposes only. The company has a 1,000-square-foot production space in Brooklyn, but wanted to increase its space for barreling and bottling.
“I’m happy they finally approved our application,” Greg Doroski, a part owner of the business and Mattituck native, said after the board announced its determination. The next step for the brewery is to secure approval from the Suffolk County Department of Health.
“We’re hoping to break ground before it freezes,” Mr. Doroski said. “We’re obviously much more delayed than we hoped we would be. It’s still kind of frustrating that we had to wait eight months and spend tens of thousands of dollars for an application that seemed like it should have been approved right off the bat.”
The approved site plan application calls for the construction of a 6,500-square-foot building for production, office space and storage. The plans do not include a spot for tasting or sales.

World: Malting industry seeing large construction wave in many parts of the world

In recent years, new malting capacities were constructed in China and Brazil, malthouses shut in Russia. The larger malt demand of craft brewers started a major construction wave in the USA, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their December report.
After Briess’ acquisition of the Manitowoc maltings, Rahr added 80,000 tonnes to their Shakopee plant, giving it a total production of 460,000 tonnes in one place. Graincorp announced a 120,000 tonnes expansion program. And a new company, Proximity Malt, is building two 30,000 tonnes malthouses in Delaware and Colorado, both aiming at special malt business with craft brewers.
In speciality malts, AB InBev (SABMiller in South Africa), Viking Malt, and Castle Malting have built new roasting facilities. Crips Malt in the UK is in the process of installing its first roasting equipment, too. All these new roasting plants are based on the new roasting technology of electric heating to avoid any contamination by NDMA of which there is a risk when applying the traditional gas-heating process. Globally these new specialty malt plants will bring between 20 and 30,000 tonnes of extra capacity of roasted and caramelized malts, which is much more than what the market can absorb.

Belgium: Belgian Competition Authority rejects request by Brouwerijen Alken-Maes to suspend AB InBev’s acquisition of Brouwerij Bosteels

On 21 November 2016, the Competition College of the Belgian Competition Authority ("BCA") rejected a request of Brouwerijen Alken-Maes ("Alken-Maes") to suspend the acquisition of Brouwerij Bosteels ("Bosteels") by Anheuser-Busch InBev NV ("AB InBev"), Mondaq News Alerts reported on December 19.
AB InBev's takeover of Bosteels was not subject to prior notification to, and approval by, the BCA since Bosteel is a small independent brewery with a turnover in Belgium well below the pertinent notification threshold of € 40 million.
Alken-Maes still requested the suspension of the acquisition and argued before the BCA that even if this acquisition was not caught by merger control rules, it had to be reviewed under Article IV.2 of the Code of Economic Law and Article 102 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, both of which prohibit the abuse of a dominant position. Alken-Maes contended that the acquisition constituted an abuse of AB InBev's dominant position as it would enable AB InBev to acquire the brand Triple Karmeliet, thus significantly strengthening its dominant position. Therefore, Alken-Maes requested the BCA to adopt interim measures suspending the implementation of the concentration.

UK: Guinness becomes the biggest selling ale and stout brand in the UK

Guinness has overtaken John Smith’s to become the biggest selling ale and stout brand across the UK, The Sun reported on December 19.
With demand soaring, sales of Diageo’s traditional Irish ‘Black Stuff’ have grown by £3.3 million in the past year, taking its value to around £69.1 million, figures by Nielsen reveal.
With Guinness taking the top spot, sales of Heineken’s John Smith’s dwindled by 2.1 per cent to £68.5 million in the year to October, Nielsen’s report shows.
Diageo said Guinness had succeeded in tapping into the country’s growing taste for craft alcohol by emphasising the Irish brew’s “story, provenance and ingredients.”
Guy Dowdell, off-trade sales director at Guinness-owner Diageo, said: “Consumer excitement for products created with craftmanship and character has brought a new energy into the world of beer.”
Hitting back, a spokesman for John Smith’s told The Sun Online: “Any beer lover will know that stouts and classic ales are very different drinks.
“John Smiths’ is still the UK’s biggest selling ale by a mile, loved by millions of drinkers across the country.”
In 2015, John Smith’s suffered a 5.7 per cent drop in UK sales, wiping £4.3 million off its value, Nielsen’s data reveals.

Africa: AB InBev agrees to sell majority stake in African Coke bottling venture to Coca-Cola Co

Coca-Cola Co has reached a deal to buy Anheuser-Busch InBev's majority stake in their African bottling venture for $3.15 billion and hold onto it until it finds a new owner, the companies said on December 21.
Coke said in October it would exercise a right to buy the stake formerly owned by SABMiller following SAB's takeover by AB InBev.
Coke has not said why it decided to buy back the stake, but it might be in its best interest to avoid partnering with AB InBev, which has no experience in Africa, and keep the beer giant at arm's length.
With little room left for AB InBev to grow meaningfully in beer, chatter among bankers has turned to whether the deal-hungry mega brewer will eventually move into soft drinks. That could put Coke at the top of its list, though Coke's $180 billion market value would be a huge hurdle.
AB InBev is already a large PepsiCo bottler in Latin America, but up until now has had no business in Africa, where distribution can be particularly challenging due to poor infrastructure.

Malaysia: Hard liquor excise duty hike could possibly bring benefits to brewers

The 150% excise duty hike on Malaysia-produced hard liquor effective Dec 15 could possibly perk up the performance of brewers producing beer and stout as consumers shift to these options since it’s cheaper, The Star Online reported on December 19.
This excise duty does not impact imported hard liquor and malt liquor products (beers).
Two brewers that stand to gain from the shift are Heikenen Malaysia Bhd and Carlberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd.
On December 16, Carlsberg shares closed unchanged at RM13.90, with a market capitalisation of RM4.28bil, while Heineken ended 20 sen higher at RM16.90, arriving at a market value of RM5.11bil.
CIMB Research said in its report that the increase was expected to drive prices of locally-produced hard liquor up by about 75%.
Since it is known that consumers prefer locally produced liquor as it’s cheaper than other alcohol beverages, CIMB believed that this may result in people switching to beer and stout as cheaper options from liquor produced locally.
“And Malaysian brewers are likely to benefit from this,” said CIMB Research, adding that this could also cause contraband alcohol to persist.
On Dec 9, the Finance Ministry announced a 150% increase in excise duty for locally produced hard liquor from RM24/litre to RM60/litre.
