WHO IS RUINING MY BEER FOAM?

ABSTRACT
It is an interesting observation that dry hopped beers often have less stable beer foam. Why is this? Comprehensive testing by a research team has found that with dry hopping, the amount of iso-alpha acids slightly decreases in the beer due to precipitation. Increases in humulinones and alpha acids were observed but both are rather foam positive so they are likely not the cause. Beta acids are foam negative, but due to low concentration in beer, they are also not guilty. But two parameters were found to be of importance: 1) Temperature - the foam stability is very sensitive to temperature change, and 2) Hop lipids - they are known to be gushing surpressing, so it is no surprise they are foam negative. Problems with foam stability? Contact Barth-Haas to discuss!

Brewery news USA, OH: Brink Brewing Co. set to open on February 14
College Hill's first brewery is set to open during a very romantic time of the year, the Cincinnati Business Courier reported on January 25.

Brink Brewing Co. at 5905 Hamilton Ave. is set to cut the ribbon on the brand new brewery on Feb. 14, opening to the public five days later on Feb. 19.

The brewery has made a lot of progress in the year since its owners announced it. It needed entirely new power and plumbing and is now completely overhauled on the inside to make it a welcoming community space. That's the brewery's strategy – rather than jumping straight into distributing its product around the city, Brink is aiming at being a community space devoted to College Hill.

Marketing director Sarah McGarry – whose husband John McGarry serves as CEO of the brewery along with her brother Kelly Montgomery, who is its head brewer – is an interior designer in Denver by trade and handled the overhaul of the building.

"We would rather meet people, sit down with them, talk about beer, talk about what we're passionate about, find out what they're liking and not liking rather than race to get on Kroger shelves day one," she said. "It's all about ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Black Narrows Brewing Co. to become Virginia’s Eastern Shore first craft brewery
Virginia’s Eastern Shore is poised to gain its first craft brewery, Black Narrows Brewing Co., Inside Business reported on January 25.

The company will create five new jobs and invest more than $350,000 to open the brewery in Accomack County. Black Narrows also plans to source 72 percent of its agricultural inputs from Virginia farmers, according to a news release from Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s office on January 25.

“We couldn’t be more proud of what this moment represents,” Jenna Chapman, co-founder of Black Narrows Brewing, said in the news release. “When state and local governments support small business, as the Commonwealth and Accomack County have done for us, the effects ripple throughout the surrounding communities.”

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services worked with the county and Black Narrows to support and secure the project. McAuliffe approved an $11,000 grant from the Governor’s Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development Fund, which Accomack will match with local funds.

“The Accomack County Board is proud to partner with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to provide support to the family-owned Black Narrows Brewery located in Chincoteague, Virginia,” said Robert Crockett, is chairman of of the Accomack County Board of Supervisors.

“Black Narrows plans to work ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Noble Beast Brewing Co. eyeing late spring opening
Shaun Yasaki cut his teeth at Fat Head's Brewery, became the first brewer at Platform Beer Co., and is now striking out on his own with Noble Beast Brewing Co., Cleveland.com reported on January 26.

After Yasaki left Platform, he took time off to work on a business plan and moonlighted at Market Garden Brewery in Ohio City.

"I enjoyed it," he said. "You always learn something new."

What's 'new' is that Yasaki is adding to Cleveland's downtown brewery scene. Up until recently, if you heard "new brewery" and "Cleveland" in the same sentence you automatically thought of Ohio City and its enclave of local craft beers. Not anymore. Terrestrial Brewing is planning on opening in Battery Park while the taps recently started flowing at Masthead Brewing on Superior Avenue.

Yasaki, raised in the West Park area of Cleveland, has a bachelor's degree in entrepreneurship from Grove City College in western Pennsylvania. He is eying a 'late spring' opening for his brewery on Lakeside Avenue East.

The brewery’s name is a marriage of brewing approaches.

Noble, as in Noble hops, traditional German varieties of Hallertau, Saaz, Spalt and Tettnang.

"I love that side of brewing - the technical side," Yasaki said. "Then the beast is American, where ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KY: Falls City Brewery relocating to larger facility
An iconic Louisville brewery is about to expand and, as it grows, Falls City Brewery hopes to help bring new life to an old neighbourhood, WDRB reported.

Falls City Brewery is relocating its headquarters from a small facility on S. 10th St. to a much larger building at the corner of 13th and Main Streets in the Portland neighborhood.

Falls City began brewing in Louisville in 1905 and quickly grew into a top regional beer brand. But it fell on hard times as mega-breweries took control, and it was forced to close in 1978.

The brand returned to Louisville in 2010, capitalizing on the craft beer craze.

“It was just on a real small capacity," said Brian U’Sellis, Falls City’s marketing manager. "But over the last few years, we’ve completely revitalized and offer a full-fledged product of craft beer now."

But most of the brewing and bottling is done by a contractor in Tennessee. With the purchase of the new building, Falls City will consolidate all its operations in Louisville.

“We'll have a large-scale brew system, a tap room in some capacity where the public can come try our beers, as well as canning or bottling line,” U’Sellis said.

And it will mean expanding the current seven-person ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Turtle Swamp Brewing building new brewery space in Jamaica Plain
Boston’s beer world is about to get a little bigger with the addition of a brand new brewery in Jamaica Plain. Turtle Swamp Brewing is in the midst of building out a brewery space on Washington Street and has its sights set on a spring 2017 opening, according to a report by Eater.

Former Harpoon brewer Nicholas Walther and partner John Lincecum are the brains behind Turtle Swamp, and they’re currently working on installing brewery equipment at 3377 Washington St., in addition to raising walls and installing the infrastructure to support a brew house.

For years, Sam Adams has dominated the beer scene in Jamaica Plain, but Turtle Swamp will soon join the fray, bringing the number of breweries operating in Jamaica Plain up to two.

Barley news EU: Forecast for increased French spring barley plantings seems to be realistic
GrainCom analysts note some more activity on malting barley lately, especially in France new crop for winter and spring barley, and also some spot business for Scandinavian malting barley has been done, it is reported.

The predicted increase in French spring barley acreage seems to be confirmed (of course depending on planting conditions) despite the increase in sugar beets which is to some extent competition for acreage. At present, GrainCom analysts estimate that an area of about 470-480 thousand ha for spring barley is realistic. Plantings will probably start within the next two weeks.

Precipitation in France was way below average the last months, consequently the water reserves are pretty low – of course this is a long shot but nevertheless something to keep in mind in case of hot and dry weather in May/June.

Brewery news Peru: Craft brewers fighting to change disadvantageous tax laws
Peru’s microbreweries are fighting to change tax laws which put them at a disadvantage against the economies of scale of SABMiller’s local monopoly, Peru Reports said on January 27.

The small but growing craft beer industry in Peru is pushing Congress to change its excise tax scheme so small breweries which sell less than 34,000 barrels per year pay less in excise tax than large breweries. With less than 1% of Peru’s beer market, they say the tax presents an unfair barrier to growth.

Peru’s largest brewer, Backus y Johnston, controls over 96% of the beer market, and that share is set to increase to over 99% after AB InBev completes its takeover of Backus parent company SABMiller. With almost 12 million barrels sold in 2015, the monopolist’s economies of scale allow it to pay a fraction of what the small businesses pay per litre in excise tax.

“Without a doubt, taxes are our biggest obstacle to growth. Absolutely without a doubt,” says Ted Alexander, founder of the Sierra Andina brewery in Peru’s central city of Huaraz. “Literally every single month between the 10th and the 17th, we all have to scratch our heads and come up with $10,000 to throw to the ...More info on site

Brewery news EU: AB InBev largest source of investment banking revenues in Europe last year
Belgian beer company AB InBev was the largest source of investment banking revenues in Europe last year - and Lazard, Deutsche Bank and Barclays split close to half of the brewer's fees between them, the Financial News reported on January 27.

In total, European clients paid banks about $16.1 billion in fees across mergers and acquisitions advice, debt and equity capital markets and loans in 2016, down from $18 billion in 2015. It was the lowest annual total since 2012.

AB InBev paid out about $491 million in fees across M&A advice and debt market deals during the year, according to data prepared for Financial News by Dealogic, which tracks disclosed fees and uses its own analytics for deals in which fees aren't disclosed.

AB InBev's fees were linked to the company’s takeover of SABMiller, which was announced in 2015 and closed in October 2016. The deal was valued by Dealogic at £87.8 billion. It also included fees for arranging two bumper bond deals that refinanced its acquisition loans, as well as smaller spin-offs and sales that the company completed.

Whisky news Kenya: East African Breweries Ltd. to boost spirits business in Kenya
East African Breweries Ltd. plans to boost its spirits business in Kenya and neighboring countries as higher duties reduce revenue from its bottled-beer business, Managing Director Andrew Cowan was quoted as saying by Bloomberg on January 27.

The company is investing about $9 million in a new line of spirits that will serve countries including Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania, Cowan said in an interview in the capital, Nairobi, on January 27. The unit of Diageo Plc, which owns a 50.02 percent stake, earlier reported a 28 percent drop in first-half income after an increase in Kenyan duties contributed to a 6.1 percent drop in revenue.

“Our focus right now is we can see growth in whisky,” Cowan said. “We are the largest whisky producer in the world, we can see growth in overall spirits.”

EABL, East Africa’s largest brewer and Kenya’s second-biggest company by market value, grew sales of spirits including Smirnoff vodka and Kenya Cane by 26 percent in the first-half, according to a statement published by Diageo, the world’s No. 1 distiller, on Thursday.

Kenya has raised excise duties on bottled beer four times in the past five years, including a 43 percent increase that took effect in December 2015 that ...More info on site

Brewery news India: United Breweries to seek legal advice following SEBI restraining Vijay Mallya from holding key position in any listed company
United Breweries Ltd said on January 27 that it is seeking legal advice for its next course of action following the Securities and Exchange Board of India’s (SEBI) restraining its Chairman Vijay Mallya from holding position as director or key managerial position in any listed company, the Economic Times reported.

In a regulatory filing, UBL said the compliance of the SEBI order "as may be required in so far as it concerns United Breweries Ltd has to be carried out by Dr Mallya himself".

"The company is in process of taking legal advice on the next course of action that it has to take as a consequence of the order and shall act suitably," the company said in a clarification sought by stock exchanges.

SEBI's order dated January 25, 2017 is a direction to Dr Vijay Mallya and others in their respective capacities, it added.

The market regulator has barred Mallya along with Ashok Capoor from "holding position as directors or key managerial persons (KMPs) of any listed company".

SEBI has also restrained Mallya along with Ashok Capoor, P A Murali, Sowmiyanarayanan, S N Prasad, Paramjit Singh Gill and Ainapur SR from the securities market ...More info on site
