WHO IS RUINING MY BEER FOAM?

ABSTRACT
It is an interesting observation that dry hopped beers often have less stable beer foam. Why is this? Comprehensive testing by a research team has found that with dry hopping, the amount of iso-alpha acids slightly decreases in the beer due to precipitation. Increases in humulinones and alpha acids were observed but both are rather foam positive so they are likely not the cause. Beta acids are foam negative, but due to low concentration in beer, they are also not guilty. But two parameters were found to be of importance: 1) Temperature - the foam stability is very sensitive to temperature change, and 2) Hop lipids - they are known to be gushing surpressing, so it is no surprise they are foam negative. Problems with foam stability? Contact Barth-Haas to discuss!

Brewery news USA: Diageo to open Guinness brewery in Maryland after a 63-year absence
After a 63-year absence, Guinness Brewery will once again have a working brewery in the United States, CNBC reported on January 31.

The Diageo-owned brand will be creating a version of its Dublin-based Guinness Open Gate Brewery in Relay, Maryland.

While the iconic Guinness Draught, Guinness Foreign Extra and Guinness Extra stouts will still be brewed in Dublin and exported to the U.S., the new brewery will focus on new Guinness beers created for the U.S. market.

The plans call for a "mid-sized" brewery with a packaging and warehouse operation as well as a visitor experience to allow tours and an "innovation microbrewery" and taproom for sampling experimental beers brewed on site.

"Opening a Guinness brewery and visitor center in the U.S. will enable us to collaborate with fellow brewers and interact with the vibrant community of beer drinkers," said Tom Day, president, Diageo Beer Company, USA, in a statement. "Given the success of our Open Gate Brewery in Dublin and the popularity of beer tourism in the U.S., we are confident that Americans will welcome the opportunity to come experience Guinness brewing in Baltimore County."

The new brewing operation would expand on the historic Calvert Distillery, a Diageo-owned production facility that ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Barley crop forecast to decline in 2017/18
Canadian farmers will grow less barley in 2017/18, according to the first new crop production estimates from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada

Total barley seedings are forecast at 2.500 million hectares, which would be down only slightly from the 2.586 million seeded in 2016. However, a return to average yields would see production come in nearly 800,000 tonnes lower on the year, at 8.000 million.

Exports are forecast to increase by 11% to 2.1 mln tonnes due to strong world supplies and a return to normal trade patterns.

For 2016-17, total domestic barley use is forecast to increase by 5% due to higher feed use in cattle and hog production. Exports are forecast to decrease by 6% due to lower world demand for feed barley but malt barley trade is largely unchanged. Barley carry-out stocks are forecast to increase to 2.0 mln tonnes, well above the previous 10-year average.

Brewery news USA, NY: Druthers Brewing Company opening a third location
Druthers Brewing Company is opening a third location in the Capital Region, NEWS10 ABC reported.

“We are blown away by the Galesi Group’s vision for Mohawk Harbor,” said Druthers Brewing Company CEO Chris Martell. “We’ve spent the last couple of years looking for the perfect spot for our third location and we found it in Schenectady. A brew pub with a beer garden overlooking the water. We can’t wait.”

Representatives with the Druther’s Brewing Company say they will lease a space at the Riverhouse at Mohawk Harbor. The new location will join the Rivers Casino as part of the $480 million Schenectady Riverfront Development Project.

Brewery news USA, VA: MoMac Brewing Co. renovating space for its future brewery
MoMac Brewing Co. has begun renovation on 6,600 square feet of space in the Academy Crossing Shopping Center at 3228 Academy Drive in Portsmouth, the Virginian-Pilot reported on January 30.

When completed, the space will include a viewable, onsite brew works, a private meeting room and a covered outdoor seating area, Portsmouth city officials said in a news release Jan. 30. The brewery and tasting room are slated to open this summer.

MoMac will use a 10-barrel Alpha Brewing system to make its craft beers. When the brewery opens, MoMac hopes to have no less than six seasonal and year-round brews on tap for the grand opening. In addition, they will offer 32 oz. crowler cans and growlers for carryout.

“We are ecstatic to finally give legs to a dream that began several years ago, when we started home brewing as a weekend hobby,” Rob Hess and Scott Krick, two of five owners of MoMac, said in the announcement. “Of great importance to us is becoming a solid contributor to Western Branch, Churchland and surrounding communities.”

Portsmouth said in its news release: “The name MoMac is derived from Monitor Merrimac, in deference to the roadstead waters of the James, Nansemond and Elizabeth Rivers. In ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Bellevue Brewing Company exploring feasibility of a second, much larger location
The former Issaquah Staples building, which has been sitting empty since the office supply chain’s departure in early January, may soon be home to the Bellevue Brewing Company’s second location.

The Bellevue Brewing Company announced in a Jan. 27 press release that it is “exploring the feasibility of a second, much larger location” at the former Staples building, located at 628 Front St. N. in Issaquah.

“It helps us to achieve our production goals that we have related to our expansion goals throughout the West Coast and Asia,” managing member John Robertson said. “The Staples building is the only single-tenant building in Issaquah that fits our needs.”

Robertson, who grew up on the Eastside, said he has very fond memories of spending time in a much smaller Issaquah from his youth, and that he looks forward to the prospect of doing business in the city now that it is growing so quickly.

“Issaquah is really growing up, we like the direction it’s heading in,” Robertson said. “It’s an under-served market and we’re excited to be there.”

Robertson said while there are wonderful beer options in Issaquah, there are simply not that many, leading people to travel to Bellevue, Renton, Seattle, Kirkland and even further for ...More info on site

Brewery news USA & Mexico: Trump’s Mexico tax talk hits Corona stocks
The 20% import tax Donald Trump has proposed on goods shipped from Mexico to the U.S. has already taken its toll on the stocks of burrito chains and Mexican beer brewers, including the maker of Corona, Fortune reported on January 28.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle flew into a panic over the proposal, designed to pay for a wall at the Mexican border. The angst has continued even though the White House has subsequently walked back its commitment to that specific approach. Critics noted that Americans would be the ones paying the tax in the form of higher prices on Mexican cerveza brands and guacamole, with some dubbing the import tariff an "avocado tax." "Simply put, any policy proposal which drives up costs of Corona, tequila, or margaritas is a big-time bad idea," Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) wrote on Twitter Thursday. "Mucho Sad."

Corona is the top imported beer in the U.S.; it has been made by Constellation Brands since 2013, when the alcoholic beverage giant bought Mexican brewery Grupo Modelo's U.S. business from Anheuser-Busch InBev. (AB InBev still imports Corona and Modelo beers in other countries besides the U.S.) Constellation Brands stock tumbled for the second day in a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AK: Matanuska Brewing Co. buying milk bottling plant to convert it to brewing facility
The former state-owned Matanuska Maid bottling plant in Palmer might be done with milk, but it's likely to be bottling something else soon, the Alaska Dispatch News reported on January 27.

Matanuska Brewing Co. LLC plans to finish the purchase of the 10,000-square-foot building this week, according to co-owner Matt Tomter. The sale of the facility for $825,000 was approved by the Alaska Board of Agriculture and Conservation last year.

Tomter said owners plan to invest $4 million in the downtown Palmer facility.

The building was owned by the state's agricultural revolving loan fund, which received the building after the Mat Maid dairy shut its doors in 2007. Loan officer Amanda Swanson said it had been available for sale since 2009. She said a previous offer to purchase the building in 2013 ultimately fell through.

Despite its bottling center past, Tomter said the building is completely empty. He said the brewery will focus on keg and canning production lines.

Tomter is also the owner of Palmer City Alehouse and Eagle River Alehouse. But he said the separate brewing venture will be focused on wholesale production. He said there are plans to have a small tasting room on site.

He said the brewery plans to make approximately ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KY: Falls City Brewing Company coming back to Louisville
Falls City Brewing Company will be coming back to Louisville as it has signed a letter of intent to acquire the ownership of the building that houses the Heine Brothers’ Coffee headquarters, WHAS11.com reported on January 26.

The brewing company’s parent company, Neace Ventures, made the announcement on January 26. It’s a move that would bring 100 percent of Falls City’s brewing operations back to Louisville.

This joint endeavor would occur at 1301 W. Main St., where Heine Brothers’ moved its corporate headquarters in late 2016. The building stands directly across from the Falls of the Ohio, the namesake of the beer-brewing company.

“We are excited to announce that Falls City Brewing Company’s full-scale production is coming back to where the brand was born,” said Falls City President Shane Uttich. “With four different packaged offerings and a constantly revolving draft-only series, our brand is gaining significant traction, and the time is right. We’re proud to support the progression of the Portland neighborhood with our new neighbors, Heine Brothers’ Coffee. A Louisville-based coffee brand and a Louisville-based beer brand rubbing shoulders at 1301 W. Main will definitely create some wonderful smells.”

Fischer said the business’ return to Louisville should be celebrated.

“The brand Falls City is ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Full Beard Brewing officially open in Timmins
The Ontario Beverage Network reports that following an open house preview event last month, Full Beard Brewing has officially opened its doors to the public in downtown Timmins.

Located at 219 Wilson Avenue, Full Beard has been launched by founder Jonathan St-Pierre, owner of draught supply and servicing company Tap It!, along with brewers Kirby Breeze-Scott and Andrew Easthope.

Brewery news USA, VA: Starr Hill Brewery launches pilot brewery in Roanoke
Starr Hill Brewery is excited to announce the opening of its Pilot Brewery & Side Stage location in Roanoke, Virginia. Starr Hill’s first satellite taproom, scheduled to open Fall 2017, will serve as a venue to showcase new beers and new music, with innovative brewers and local artists creating side by side in the Star City of the South.

Starr Hill Pilot Brewery & Side Stage will house a custom 5-barrel brewing system, the company’s first for producing small batches since moving from its original brewpub location in 2005. The pilot system will provide Starr Hill with increased flexibility for brewing upwards of 50 limited release batches of ales, lagers and wild beers each year, led by Brewmaster Robbie O’Cain.

“With flagship brands taking precedence at our production facility in Crozet, this pilot system presents us with the opportunity to really show off our brewing talents and new ideas to fans in Roanoke and beyond,” says O’Cain. “Both facilities supporting each other allows us to create a variety of unique styles with virtually infinite access to the best hops and malts in the industry.”

The Side Stage portion of the taproom will feature live performances several nights a week from up-and-coming artists in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Steelhead Aleworks planning to become full-fledged brewpub
Drink up, beer lovers. A new brewery is fermenting, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on January 31.

Dave Baron and Jason Radosevich brew Steelhead Aleworks at House of Brews in Madison. They have plans to become "a full-fledged brewpub," and are scouting possible locations in Waukesha County.

The timeline includes six months for a storefront for the beer; eight months to have a taproom open.

"It started out two guys brewing beer in a garage," said Baron, about his operation with Radosevich, a Hartland resident. Baron, 51, lives in New Berlin and now looks at brewing as his "retirement package."

Steelhead Aleworks is on tap at Cleveland Pub, 14000 W. Cleveland Ave, New Berlin, and at Natty Oaks, 11505 W. National Ave., West Allis, with more establishments on the way.

Steelhead currently offers an IPA, a Pale Ale, an Amber Ale and a Brown Ale, but "our Oktoberfest is off the charts," Baron said.

Brewery news USA, NY: Po’ Boy Brewery launches in Port Jefferson Station
Ronkonkoma resident Bob Rodriguez started home brewing in 2008, and since then has racked up 34 national awards for both beer and hard cider, Newsday reported on January 28.

You don’t have to be a national beer judge or one of Bob’s friends to enjoy his handiwork anymore, with the opening of Po’ Boy Brewery in Port Jefferson Station on Friday, January 27.

Po’ Boy is one of a very few farm breweries (meaning it uses New York State farm products) on Long Island. Rodriguez gets his apple juice from Richter’s Orchard in Northport. Plans to use East End barley and hops are in the works.

Po’ Boy is pouring four ciders, including flavors like cherry, cupcake and Key lime. Four more taps will flow with handcrafted artisanal brews that may include Kolsch, Bocks, Pilsners and American Stout.

Take-home growlers aren’t available yet but are coming soon.

Brewery news USA, NE: Kinkaider Brewing Co. announces second location in Railside
Downtown Grand Island will get another craft brew pub come spring, the Grand Island Independent reported.

Kinkaider Brewing Co., based in Broken Bow, announced on January 29 that it will open a second location in Railside. The farm craft brewery is owned by Barry Fox, Nate Bell, Dan Hodges and Cody Schmick.

Kinkaider has been open for two years on a farm outside Broken Bow. The Grand Island location will move into the Nathan Detroit’s building after the restaurant closes this spring. "Our business has just flourished," Schmick said.

He said the four partners knew they wanted to take the next step with their business, which delivers beer across the state. Schmick said they knew they wanted to stay closer to home and Central Nebraska because Omaha already has many craft breweries.

"Grand Island was big on our list for potential places," Schmick said.

Schmick lived in Grand Island for a little bit after high school. He also met his wife in Grand Island. He said he and his partners scoped out other towns, but Grand Island was very enthusiastic to help them find a location downtown.

"There’s a group of individuals in the city that really love Grand Island and want to see it grow ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: St. Mary Axe contract brewery joins Toronto beer scene
Ontario Beverage Network reports that a new Toronto-based contract brewer has launched with a new beer created by a respected veteran of the world’s brewing scene.

St. Mary Axe has been founded by Steve Dobronyi and Christine Haselmayer, who explain the name as follows:

St. Mary Axe was a medieval church in the old City of London, England. The church was demolished in the 1500’s but the name survives as the street that it formerly occupied. Today, it boasts some of the most modern architecture in the world. St. Mary Axe typifies the dichotomy of our beer – old and new, traditional and modern.

The company’s first release is Canadian Best Bitter, a 4.6% abv ale that has been developed by renowned British brewmaster Alan Pugsley. Currently being brewed under contract in London, Ontario, it’s described as having “a medium copper hue, flavours of caramel and light toast with a dry finish.”

Canadian Best Bitter is on tap now at The Westerly in Toronto, with more locations expected to follow soon. It will also be available in 473 ml cans and select Beer Store and LCBO locations in coming months.

Brewery news USA, KY: Bluegrass Brewing Company moving from its St. Matthews location
Bluegrass Brewing Company is moving from its St. Matthews location after 23 years on Shelbyville Road, the Courier-Journal reported on January 27.

On January 27, co-owner Pat Hagan told the Courier-Journal that the company has agreed to forgo its lease on the brewery's building so that another restaurant can move in.

Partners in the new venture were previously involved in Sully's Saloon, a Fourth Street Live! bar and restaurant that closed in 2013 after an 11-year run.

They plan to open a similar concept — called Sullivan's Tap House — in the BBC building, though it will be unaffiliated with Sully's former parent company, East Coast Saloons, co-owner Matt Taylor said.

"We want to have great local food, local beers, local spirits," said Taylor, who will run the taphouse with partners John Sullivan and New York Jets player Breno Giacomini. "The late night will have some similarities between Sullivan's and Sully's."

Hagan said he is sad to leave the St. Matthews spot, but the interest in the building — owned by Breland Development — could not have come at a better time.

Soon, construction will start on a new BBC restaurant in the Kindred Healthcare facility at the corner of Broadway and Fourth Street. And Hagan ...More info on site

Brewery news Kenya: East African Breweries expects recovery in Kenya’s beer market
East African Breweries Ltd (EABL), controlled by Britain's Diageo, blamed a jump in Kenyan tax on beer for its flat sales in the six months to Dec. 31 but expects a recovery in the next half-year period, Reuters reported on January 27.

Chief Executive Andrew Cowan told Reuters on January 27 that Kenya should adopt regular, predictable excise tax increases rather than big moves every few years, pointing to a drop in sales of leading brands such as Tusker after Kenya increased excise duty on beer by 43 percent at the end of 2015.

"The boom and bust approach - a 43 percent tax increase - has put the heartbeat of our business, that Tusker brand, under pressure," Cowan said after a news conference on the previous day's half-year results.

But he said that consumption is expected to pick up in the next six months as consumers adjust to the new prices in an economy that is growing at about 6 percent a year.

Kenya, which accounts for 70 percent of EABL's revenue, has one of the highest rates of tax on beer on the continent. Tusker has a recommended retail price of 140 shillings ($1.35) per bottle, 68 shillings of which goes to ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Craft beer revolution put at risk by Brexit, some brewers warn
Brexiters toasting an impending exit from the EU with a pint of ale could be in for a sobering shock, after some of Britain’s top brewers warned that the weak pound is putting the craft beer revolution at risk, The Guardian reported on January 30.

The country’s brewery industry has been enjoying a renaissance, with about 200 new breweries a year adding to the choice for drinkers. But small-scale brewing is already feeling the pinch from the slump in sterling, which has sent the cost of imported ingredients and equipment soaring.

Now drinkers, already asked to pay more than £5 a pint for some independent brews, are being warned that they may have to accept price rises or switch to cheaper mass-market brands.

Unlike multinational beer companies behind such brands, which are not immune to the weak pound but spend relatively little on ingredients, craft brewers scour the globe for the best hops and malt, often preferring overseas varieties.

“Everybody’s noticed it and it’s to be expected because you’re importing hops from places like the US and Europe,” said Andrew Paterson, head brewer at Dark Star Brewing in West Sussex. “It’s also the case for steel tanks, kegs, yeast manufactured in Holland, anything that’s ...More info on site
