A CLOSE UP - HOP PARTICLES IN
DRY HOPPING
ABSTRACT
In dry hopping it is all about extracting the flavours
from the hop particles. German researchers
closely examined particle size during dry hopping, as
the process of pellet disintegration of very important.
Fast swelling hop pellets with small particle size
distribution are seen as ideal for dry hopping. Swelling
velocity was found to be both temperature and variety
independent. The researchers also found that the
swelling volume is higher in low alpha varieties. As
sedimentation of particles happens quickly, agitation
is suggested for better extraction. They also found the
lower particle size distribution of pellets is beneficial in
this context compared to the properties of hop powder
prior to pelletization. These insights should help to
make dry hopping more efficient!

USA, MN: Jack Pine Brewery readies for a May opening
|
What started with a small online Kickstarter campaign in 2012 has now become something much bigger as Jack Pine Brewery readies for a May opening, the Brainer Dispatch reported on March 4.
"I'm just amazed at how this has grown over the years. When I started, I expected to be drinking beer with the same twelve people every Friday night in the taproom," said Patrick Sundberg, Jack Pine Brewery's owner, founder and brewer, in a news release. "I never thought my beer would be so widely accepted ... but I'm ecstatic that it is."
Sundberg said he never dreamed that his operation would grow this quickly but thanks to loyal customers, a solid demand for wholesale, and the continued production of award-winning beer, Jack Pine Brewery is growing ahead of his projections.
Not only are his goals growing, but his team is as well. Kevin Clark will become Jack Pine Brewery's head brewer when the new location opens this spring on Edgewood Drive in Baxter.

Canada, NS: Lunn’s Mill Beer Company announces soft launch in Lawrencetown
|
Lunn’s Mill Beer Company has announced its soft launch in Lawrencetown, a village in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley, Canadian Beer News reported.
Named after the original name of Lawrencetown, Lunn’s Mill has been founded by partners Mark Reid, Chantelle Webb, Sean Ebert, and Chad Graves.
Located at 515 Carleton Road, Lunn’s Mill opened for growler sales on March 2nd from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, with a debut beer line-up that includes Charming Molly Blonde Ale, Brickyard Red Ale, Lunn’s Pub Ale, and XPA #1 IPA.
Regular business hours have yet to be announced, but once it’s fully up and running, the Lunn’s Mill facility will feature a tasting room, kitchen and dining area, and an outdoor patio in the warmer months, in addition to the retail store.

USA, NC: The Mason Jar Lager Company could be open in July or early August
|
What comes next after running a pair of successful restaurants?
For Holly Springs-based Mason Jar Tavern, the next step is brewing their own beer, WRAL.com reported on March 4.
Jon Pierce, owner of the Mason Jar, and brewer Dave Haydysch bought equipment from Draft Line Brewing Company in Fuquay-Varina and plan to open The Mason Jar Lager Company in the East Broad Street location.
As the name suggests, Mason Jar will be brewing lagers.
"I am incredibly excited to be brewing lagers," Haydysch said on the 919 Beer podcast. "I think the interesting thing that I think a lot of people either don't think about or have lost sight of is that lagers and ales, the two big beer groups, they're pretty similar.
"You can play around with a lager pretty much just like you can play around with an ale."
Ales are a popular beer style because they can end up on the extreme ends of flavor, from the palate-frying hops in some IPAs to the dark and roasty stouts. But, like Haydysch said, there's plenty of room to experiment with lagers, too.
The brewery will debut with a Helles and Bock, but there will also be an IPL—an India Pale Lager.

Canada, BC: Andina Brewing opened since March 1st in East Vancouver
|
A long-in-the-works addition to the ever-expanding “Yeast Van” brewery district in East Vancouver officially opened its doors to the public on March 1st, Canadian Beer News reported.
Andina Brewing has been founded by brothers Andrés and Nicolàs Amaya, with able assistance from their respective wives, Rocio and Claudia.
Inspired by the Amaya’s birthplace of Colombia, Andina exhibits a strong South American influence in many areas, from the Patagonia malts from Chile that are used to make all of the beers, to the rotating menu of ceviches and other regional dishes that are on offer in the 56-seat tasting room, to the “La Pola” girl logo and branding created by Colombian illustrator Leo Espinosa.
Debut brands from the brewery include Totuma Kolsch (4.5% abv, 22 IBU), Monita Blonde IPA (6.5% abv, 60 IBU), Ay Ay Ay Pale Ale (5% abv, 36 IBU), and the seasonal Maraca Black IPA (5.7% abv, 50 IBU). All are available by the glass and in flights at the bar, as well as growler fills to go.

USA, MA: Milford’s CraftRoots Brewing to open its doors on March 11
|
CraftRoots Brewing will be opening its doors to the general public on Saturday, March 11, holding its grand opening after more than a year in planning, the Milford Daily News reported on March 8.
The brewery, located on 4 Industrial Way, is Milford's first brewery, and owner Maureen Fabry hopes it becomes part of the fabric of the community.
"Our name is a play on the word 'Grassroots,'" said Fabry, who founded the brewery with her wife Robin Fabry. "We want to be a brewery for the people of Milford."
Fabry has a long history of brewing. She got her start at the now defunct Boston brewpub Brew Moon in the 1990s. From there, she moved on to John Harvard's in Cambridge, Boston Beer Works and then a long stint at Berkshire Brewing Company in South Deerfield.
She left the industry to raise her twins, but in 2014, she launched CraftRoots.
"It was a small operation, I had a pilot brewing system in our garage," said Fabry. "We sold it at a few local locations, but when we started selling out every time, we decided to open a brewery."

USA, PA: Evil Genius Beer Co. scheduled to open on March 8

The Philadelphia brewing boom continues with March 8's opening of Evil Genius Beer Co.'s tasting room beneath the Market-Frankford El at 1727 N. Front St. in Fishtown, just up the street from Front Street Cafe and Wm. Mulherin's Sons and a long block south of the Berks Street station, Phlly.com reported on March 3.
The new Evil Genius' grand scale and reclaimed-industrial motif are reminiscent of Philadelphia Distilling Co.'s new spot nearby, next to the Fillmore.
Evil Geniuses/owners Luke Bowen and Trevor Hayward started with a derelict late-19th-century building, likely once used as a rail-car factory, on Front Street between Palmer and Columbia. They kept its pulley system (actually using it during renovation) and added a roof with skylights. It's also now completely energy-efficient, Bowen explains. Radiant heat has been installed in the all-new floor, and he says the bill from the LED lighting would be $2 a day even if all were left on 24 hours a day.

Canada, SK: Saskatoon’s 9 Mile Legacy Brewing is getting set to reopen this week
|
On Beer reports that Saskatoon’s 9 Mile Legacy Brewing is getting set to reopen in a new and larger location later this week.
Named after the fact that the families of owners Shawn Moen and Garrett Pederson once owned farms nine miles apart near Swift Current, the brewery was launched in early 2015 in a business incubator space near the Saskatoon Farmers’ Market. That space closed at the end of 2016 to prepare for the move and expansion.
The new facility at 220 20th St. W. features a new 5-barrel brewhouse, alongside the original 1-barrel brewhouse that has been moved over from the old location, as well as an expanded taproom pouring pints, samples and growlers, and a merchandise shop.
The new home of 9 Mill Legacy will be opening on Friday March 10th.

Canada, NB: Valonray Farmhouse Brewing to open this summer in MacDougall Settlement
|
The Atlantic Canada Beer Blog reports that a new brewery is aiming to open this summer in MacDougall Settlement, a small community in New Brunswick approximately 25 km north of Moncton.
Valonray Farmhouse Brewing is being founded by Phil and Allison Fontaine, and is named after the anglicized version of Walonereye, which means Wallonia in the Walloon French dialect.
Valonray will be launching with a line-up of American-style ales, with a number of Belgian-style ales aged in 225 litre oak barrels to follow several months later.
The beers will be available to select licensees on tap, and in bottles at ANBL outlets. A taproom will follow in 2018, and eventually the brewery will offer barrel-aged sour beers and other farmhouse styles.

USA, TN: Elkmont Exchange Brewery scheduled to launch in late 2017
|
Internationally recognized brewmaster and Knoxville native Alex Violette and lifelong friend and executive chef Ryan Davenport plan to open Elkmont Exchange Brewery and Eating House in late 2017, the Knoxville News Sentinel reported on March 8.
Elkmont Exchange will occupy a 10,000-square-foot building that formerly was home to Rentals Rentals at 745 N. Broadway.
Violette has a biochemistry degree from Maryville College and began his brewing career at Smoky Mountain Brewery shortly after graduation. Violette moved to Colorado, where he worked his way up to head brewer at Upslope Brewing Company in Boulder. He also opened the Pasteur Street Brewing Company in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
Davenport grew up in Knoxville and began his career at Magnolia’s in Charleston, S.C. Davenport worked as a sous chef at Nashville’s Flyte and, in 2015, joined Violette in Ho Chi Minh City. Davenport is currently keeping his skills sharp at Emilia in Market Square.

USA, CA: Revolt Brewing Co. to start building its brewery in Montclair in the coming weeks
|
Two local friends and business partners are excited to fulfill their dream of opening a microbrewery in Montclair sometime this summer after a few years of selling home brewing supplies at a light industrial property in the city, the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin reported on March 6.
Kyle Arroyo, 29, of Chino and Jeovanni Solorzano, 28, of Fontana opened up Revolt Homebrew Supply, 8939 Vernon Ave., almost three years ago, after having found a passion for home brewing and craft beer themselves.
With the craft beer industry experiencing major growth in the Inland Empire in recent years, Arroyo and Solorzano knew the time was right to open their own brewery. The pair submitted plans to the city, leased more industrial space in their building, and were recently awarded a conditional use permit for the new business, Revolt Brewing Co., which will be located adjacent to their home brew supply business.
Construction on the new space will begin in the coming weeks.
“Once we started doing this, we got inspired by some of the local breweries opening up and we thought, ‘Hey, I think we can do this. Let’s give it a shot,’ ” Arroyo said.

USA, CA: Dead Oak Brewing Co. aims at fall opening in Atascadero
|
A new brewery is coming to Atascadero.
Nikki and Jesse Kaltenberg, who moved to Atascadero from Anaheim last year, plan to open Dead Oak Brewing Co. this fall at 5925 Entrada Ave., The San Luis Obispo Tribune reported on March 8.
The 2,400-square-foot downtown space, formerly occupied by retailer The Pet Dept., will house the couple’s brewing operations and bar. That will include a five-barrel brewing system, a menu with up to 10 different beers, as well as indoor and outdoor seating with a back patio boasting views of Atascadero’s historic City Hall.
“The history was a big draw for us,” Nikki Kaltenberg said in explaining why they chose Atascadero.
The couple, who budgeted $260,000 for the project, said their leased space is getting an overhaul to keep it light and airy with wood accents. They’re waiting for their design to be approved by the city so they can get permits.
Once the brewery opens, the pair said they want to get patrons involved in the brand.
“One of the first things we’d like to do is allow our customers to have a say on what gets served and which beers are brought back for another run,” Nikki Kaltenberg said.

Canada, BC: New nanobrewery LoveShack Libations now open for business in in Qualicum Beach
|
A new nanobrewery serving residents and visitors in Qualicum Beach on the northeastern coast of Vancouver Island is now open for business, Canadian Beer News reported on March 7.
LoveShack Libations was launched in mid-February (“aptly just in time for Valentine’s Day!”) by long-time homebrewer Dave Paul and his wife Rachel.
For the newly launched business version of LoveShack, Paul has set up shop at #1-4134 Island Hwy W. in Qualicum Beach, and is currently offering a line-up of four beers in bottles and on tap including D.P.A. (6.2% abv/50 IBU – “a darker IPA, plenty of body with a healthy blend of Northwest hops”), Crafty Cream Ale (5.5% abv/18 IBU – “smooth, slightly sweeter ale with a rounded mouth feel”), Precious Porter (5% abv/30 IBU – “full of rich dark chocolate and coffee flavours”), and Killer Kolsch (4.8% abv/25 IBU – “light, crisp lager/pilsner type beer that uses organic leaf hops from Maple Bay Hop Farms”).
LoveShack Libations is open on Wednesdays from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and Saturdays from 12:00 noon to 4:00 PM.

Despite having more than $10 billion of the company’s cash at stake, AB InBev Chief Executive Officer Carlos Brito can similarly relax over the global brewer’s lengthy list of outstanding tax disputes in his native Brazil, Bloomberg reported on March 8.
Through Ambev SA, its publicly traded Brazilian subsidiary, AB InBev faces tax disputes with Brazil’s tax authorities that may lead to combined losses of $14.4 billion, according its 2016 annual report. In the report, filed March 2, the Belgium-based brewer cites over 30 tax assessments in Brazil, with Ambev receiving 10 tax assessments alone in 2016, according to data compiled by Bloomberg BNA.

World: Molson Coors Brewing Company announces pricing of euro-denominated Senior Floating Rate Notes

Molson Coors Brewing Company announced on March 7 the pricing of its previously announced offering of €500 million aggregate principal amount of its Floating Rate Senior Notes due 2019 (the “Notes”). The Notes will bear interest at a floating rate equal to three-month EURIBOR, reset quarterly, plus 0.350% per annum. The offering is expected to close on or about March 15, 2017, subject to customary closing conditions, Yahoo Finance said.
After deducting discounts and commissions and estimated offering expenses, Molson Coors expects to receive net proceeds from the offering of approximately €500 million. Substantially concurrently with the offering, Molson Coors expects to issue $1.0 billion aggregate principal amount of its U.S. dollar-denominated senior notes, consisting of $500 million principal amount of 1.900% Senior Notes due 2019 and $500 million principal amount of 2.250% Senior Notes due 2020 (the “Concurrent Offering”). The aggregate principal amount of this offering, together with the Concurrent Offering, is expected to be equivalent to approximately $1.5 billion.
Molson Coors intends to use the net proceeds of this offering and the Concurrent Offering to repay a portion of the amounts outstanding under its term loan facility.

Cambodia: Cambodia Brewery Limited expands and adds Heineken to its production line

Cambodia Brewery Limited (CBL) on March 6 officially unveiled a $100 million major brewery expansion and announced the addition of Heineken to its production line, the Khmer Times reported.
Frans Eusman, president of Heineken Asia-Pacific, said his company began operations in Cambodia in 1994 as a joint-venture between Asia Pacific Brewery Limited and Progress Import-Export Company, which is owned by the Vattanac Group, and invested about $56 million to build a brewery in Cambodia.
Mr. Eusman said the decision to expand the brewery was due to an increasing demand for their products in Cambodia. He said the company invested more than $100 million into the expansion, which was completed by the end of 2016.
He added that the brewery’s capacity to produce beer is from 80 million to 300 million litres per annum or about 27,000 to 100,000 cases of beer per day.

UK & China: British beer exports to China up 500% in 2016

British brews are becoming insanely popular in China.
According to Beverage Daily, beer exports from the U.K. experience a 500 percent increase in 2016 due to rising consumer demand throughout the country.
Some analysts have cited Chinese president Xi Jinping's interest in beer as contributing to the beverage's rising popularity. In 2015, he was photographed enjoying a beer with former British prime minister David Cameron.
But China isn't the only country to have a stronger interest in British brews - exports to India grew by 417 percent and exports to the EU grew by 5 percent.
With a total of 1.05 billion pints of beer being sent abroad, the country's beer exports are now valued at $712 million, up $102 million since 2015.
Approximately 63 percent of Britain’s beer exports are for the EU while the remaining 37 percent are destined for other locations around the globe.
The increase in brewery exports has boosted beer to the third most valuable food or drink export coming out of the U.K., falling behind only whisky and chocolate in 2016, according to the Food and Drink Federation 2016 export statistics.

Kenya: Beer consumption to rise by at least 10% in the next five years as more Kenyans will be embracing bottled beer

Beer consumption in Kenya is set to rise by at least 10 per cent in the next five years boosted by higher income and an increase in a youthful population, KDRTV reported on March 6.
An analysis by BMI Research firm on the industry trends also shows that more Kenyans will be willing to leave the traditional liquor market and embrace bottled beer as low cost brands bridge the gap.
The results released last week will be music to the ears of the brewers who have recorded declining sales in bottled beer in the wake of recent increases in taxation, which pushed up retail prices for the drinks.
“Rising incomes combined with a large young adult population (20-39 years) and increased adoption of affordable entry-level brands will see consumption accelerate over the years ahead. While high excise duties presents a downside risk to growth in mainstream and premium categories, favourable demographics and greater penetration of low-cost offerings will drive volume expansion for major brewers,” the analysis released last week said.

India: United Breweries Holding appeals against winding-up court order

United Breweries Holding Ltd (UBHL) has appealed against an 8 February order of the Karnataka high court that directed winding-up of the company, Livemint reported on March 7 citing a person involved in the case.
UBHL, promoted by Vijay Mallya, held a controlling stake in Kingfisher Airlines Ltd, the debt-ridden airline grounded in 2012. The appeal comes at a time when lenders are trying to recover dues owed by Kingfisher Airlines and multiple authorities are probing allegations of money laundering and fund diversion, among other charges.
The appeal also pleads the court to let the company function in its present form until the pendency of the case, the person cited above said, requesting not to be named, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
The Karnataka high court had passed an order to wind up the holding arm of Mallya’s erstwhile business empire after multiple parties including a consortium of secured lenders, service providers, lessors of aircraft and suppliers of aero engines sued to recover dues.
There are 10 petitioners with claims amounting to over Rs6,958.60 crore. They have invoked corporate guarantees furnished by UBHL, Mint reported.

Australia: Barley Australia reviews preferred malting varieties list

Under the latest review by Barley Australia of the preferred malting varieties list, Buloke variety has been removed in Victoria and Western Australia, Commander in NSW and WA, and Baudin, Gairdner and Navigator in South Australia, the Grain Central reported on March 8.
“As market demand for malting barley changes, which is itself a function of the domestic and export brewers’ needs, various varieties are removed or superseded. A variety once removed from the Preferred List is still an accredited variety and is retained on the Accredited Varieties List,” Barley Australia chairman, Andrew Gee, said.
Barley Australia said the MBIBTC would assess Compass and Spartacus through 2017; both promoters had indicated sufficient grain was available from the 2016/17 harvest.
It anticipated a final recommendation as to MBIBTC’s malting evaluation of Compass and Spartacus varieties for malting barley accreditation would be considered at its meeting planned for February 2018.

Spring malting barley growers looking ahead for a replacement to distilling industry favourite variety Concerto may have a new option in time for the 2019 planting season, the Farmers’ Weekly reported on March 6.
Opera made its debut on the AHDB Recommended List announced last December with a fungicide treated yield of 104% – 10% higher than Limagrain stablemate Concerto, and an early maturing date which could make it particularly attractive to northern growers.
The breeder is hoping to maximise its appeal by seeking approval from the brewers and the distillers clearing its way for use in the beer and Scottish whisky sectors.
Opera could gain provisional approval from the Institute of Brewing and Distilling this May, clearing the way for “macro” trials which require 1,000t of the crop to be put through both brewing and distilling processes.
Full approval would then be granted or denied 12 months later, in May 2018, clearing the way for malting contracts to potentially be issued for the variety for the 2019 growing season.

The Netherlands: Heineken to launch its first alcohol-free beer

Amsterdam-based brewer Heineken is to launch its first alcohol-free beer, Heineken 0.0, in the Netherlands on March 7. The beer, which has a partly blue label, will be available in Dutch bars and retail outlets ahead of an international launch, DutchNews.nl reported on March 6.
The new product marks a change of strategy for the company, the Telegraaf reported. Late director Freddy Heineken vowed no alcohol-free beer would ever appear under the Heineken brand name, saying he felt even a light beer would damage the Heineken brand.
But the present Heineken chief Jean-François van Boxmeer is not afraid of change and he has expanded the company considerably, the Telegraaf said.
The Heineken brand still accounts for 30% of group profit. ‘The new brand is exciting,’ said Heineken master brewer Willem van Waesberghe. ‘It is the biggest change Heineken has made in years because it is an update of our own brand,’ he told the paper.

UK: Molson Coors to distribute Palm Belgian Craft Brewers beers, La Trappe Trappist Ales in the UK

As part of its partnership with Bavaria brewery, Molson Coors will take over the distribution of Palm Belgian Craft Brewers’ beers in the UK, the Morning Advertiser reported on March 7.
The announcement follows the long-term partnership agreement between Molson and Bavaria brewery, which was approved in July last year.
As part of the agreement, Molson Coors UK was given the exclusive rights in the off and on-trade to the sales, distribution and customer marketing of Dutch brewer Bavaria and its portfolio of brands in the UK.
The beer giant will also take over the UK distribution for La Trappe Trappist Ales from De Koningshoeven brewery in the Netherlands.
Both distribution deals will bring Palm, Brugge, Rodenbach and Cornet and the full La Trappe range into Molson Coors’ portfolio and will form part of Molson Coors’ recently launched Brew + Press craft beer and cider initiative.

China: Southern China’s Guangdong province consumes US$7.3 bln worth of alcoholic beverages last year

Guangdong province in southern China consumed 50.4 billion RMB (US$7.3 billion) worth of alcoholic beverages in 2016, driven by medium to high-end range drinks, the Guangdong Alcohol Industry Association has revealed.
From January to December last year, consumption of alcoholic beverages priced above 400 RMB (US$58) grew by 2.16%, and mid-ranged drinks selling between 100 RMB (US$14.5) and 400 RMB (US$58) jumped 9.37% as well, the trade association said at a meeting last week. Consumption of drinks below 100 RMB dropped 4.63%, it added.
Spirits dominated the province’s alcohol consumption with 18.5 billion RMB (US$2.68 billion) worth of domestic spirits and 6 billion RMB (US$869 million) of imported spirits.
Beer consumption totalled 16.1 billion RMB (US$2.3 billion), followed by wine consumption of 9.8 billion RMB (US$1.4 billion).
Imported wines in the province accounted for 40% of the country’s total value, with US$925 million, it added.

Miller Genuine Draft, a brand SAB launched in South Africa in 2004 after acquiring the US's Miller Brewing Company, will now be sold in South Africa exclusively by Heineken, the MD of Molson Coors’ South African operations, Ruud van den Eijnden, was quoted as saying by Times Live on March 7.
The South African theatre turned vicious after Heineken refused to allow SAB to continue selling its "green bottle" brand Amstel in retaliation for SAB entering South America.
The fighting escalated when Heineken attacked SAB in its backyard by building Sedibeng brewery.
SABMiller's divorce from MillerCoors so as to marry Anheuser-Busch InBev appears to have freed its former US partner to form new alliances.
Molson Coors International CE Stewart Glendinning said on March 6: "We have welcomed the world-famous Miller family of brands into our business globally and are, therefore, pleased to partner with Heineken SA, a key player in one of the world's largest beer markets by volume."
Heineken said: "We believe that the Miller Genuine Draft brand perfectly complements our existing brand portfolio and will help to grow our business in SA."
