    • 2. Brewery News

Brazil’s leading beverage company, Companhia de Bebidas das Americas (AmBev), reported on October 3 that its beer sales volumes in Brazil decreased by about 12 % in the third quarter of the year versus the third-quarter 2002. In AmBev's last conference call (August 13, 2003) the Company indicated that it was expecting its beer sales volumes in Brazil to decline single digit during the third quarter 2003 versus the year-ago quarter. Nevertheless, the world's fifth-largest brewer said in a short statement posted late on October 3: "Despite the shortfall in volumes, AmBev's management remains confident that its revenue management initiatives, combined with its tight grip on costs and expenses and the strength of AmBev's people, among other factors, will lead the Company to achieve its internal profitability targets for 2003." The company's domination of some 70 % of the Brazilian beer market is the source of the bulk of its revenue. According to Reuters, AmBev stock hit a record high close of 703 reais on Sept. 5 but has since slumped about 10.5 % to Friday's finish at 628 reais despite a rally by Brazil's Bovespa stock index. At least one analyst has blamed the stock's drop on concerns that AmBev's volume sales would suffer in the quarter due to the weak state of Brazil's economy and because rivals had not matched price hikes AmBev made in the middle of the year.

Adolph Coors Co., the No. 3 U.S. brewer, announced on October 3 that it would change its place of incorporation from Colorado to Delaware. The proposal was approved by Class A and B shareholders. More than 28 million shares voted in favor of the measure (80 % of outstanding shares). The Golden, Colorado-based company had been incorporated in that state since its founding in 1873. "We''re pleased with the outcome of this vote," said Peter Coors, Chairman of Adolph Coors Company. "This change will be beneficial to the company and its shareholders through obtaining the benefits of Delaware''s comprehensive, widely used and extensively interpreted corporate law." The reincorporation is anticipated to become effective today, and will not result in any change in the company''s name, headquarters, business, jobs, management, location of offices or facilities, number of employees, taxes payable to the State of Colorado, assets, liabilities or net worth. Also, the company''s Class B common stock will continue to trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol RKY...more info

Korea: According to the National Assembly of Korea and the Ministry of Finance and Economy yesterday, 17 Grand National Party lawmakers have submitted legislation that calls for lowering the tax rate on beer from 100% to 72% to make it equal to the rate on distilled liquor, The Korea Herald reported in a statement on October 6. Critics say that the government slaps the highest tax rate on beer to increase its tax revenue because beer is the most popular drink in the country. According to the National Tax Service's statistics on its tax revenue, the government collected 1.16 trillion won ($1 billion) in taxes from beer consumption, compared with 529.6 billion won from soju and 214.9 billion won from whiskey. Under the liquor tax law, revised in 1999, the government more than doubled the tax rate on distilled liquors such as whiskey and soju, the vodka-like traditional distilled alcoholic beverage, to 72 %. While the beer tax rate was gradually cut from 130 % to 100 %, it is still the highest among all kinds of alcoholic drinks. The tax rate on wine is 30 %...more info

The Denmark’s brewing force, Carlsberg Breweries A/S, could spend up to 4 billion kroner (US$ 625 million) on acquisitions in Asia in the next couple of years, company’s CEO, Nils Smedegaard Andersen, said in a report to the Danish daily newspaper Jyllands-Posten. "I can easily imagine that we'll invest 2-4 bln dkr in Asia during the next 2-3 years. There are many interesting areas in Asia - China, Vietnam or smaller markets," Nils S. Andersen said. He added that as China is the largest market the company was looking there already. “Following Carlsberg's joint venture problems in Thailand, Carlsberg will also look for outright ownership of businesses it buys in the region, although this may not always be possible, particularly in China.”

      3. Malt News

Taiwan purchased 21,000 tons of malt through a Japanese trading house at EUR 298.50 C+F Taiwan, in bags in container of EU origin, said the sources. Sri Lanka purchased 8,000 tons of malt for 2004, at about US $ 290, FOB Antwerp, in bulk in container. Thailand purchased 20,000 tons of malt, in bulk in container, at EUR 292 C+F Bangkok. Costa Rica purchased from Canada, 12,000 tons CIF Pacific Coast, at US$ 305. According to analysts, altogether activities were small and disappointing. They said prices remained under pressure, as can be seen from traded levels.
