Brewery news USA: Craft beer industry as a whole still looks healthy
There might be a lot of things to cast aspersions on millennials about, but killing the beer industry doesn't seem to be one of them. Despite a recent Goldman Sachs report blaming the millennials for falling beer sales, the industry as a whole still looks healthy. It's only mass produced beers that are really hurting; craft beer is doing just fine, The Motley Fool reported on August 18.

A cursory glance might not suggest that. The craft beer industry trade group Brewers Association said craft beer sales grew only 6% last year after a decade or so worth of double-digit growth. Leading craft brewer Boston Beer continues to post declining depletions - or sales to distributors and retailers (a proxy for consumer demand) - and it sold 1,000 fewer barrels year-to-date than it did last year. It's only been bolstered by tiny, niche products like hard seltzer, that could very well turn into flash-in-the-pan fads like hard soda.

And mass produced beers are certainly no better. The Beer Institute, using unofficial estimates of domestic tax paid shipments, says volumes fell by over 1.4 million barrels last year to 174.1 million barrels, a 0.8% decline, compared to 2015.

According to the Goldman Sachs report, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Heineken’s US business boosted by ‘data and diversity’
Between the largest domestic macro brewers and the biggest of the big craft brewers, there’s a segment of the U.S. beer industry trying to avoid being pinched, MarketWatch reported on August 23.

Data and diversity have helped Heineken escape the trap.

Dutch brewer Heineken sells more than 8.5 million barrels of its various beer brands in the U.S., more than double that of Boston Beer Co., the biggest craft brewer. However, it’s about half of what Constellation Brands (Ballast Point, Corona, Modelo) and less than 10% of what Anheuser-Busch InBev produce or import in a year.

The tide of Big Beer, combined with the continued growth of small craft brewers, has forced Heineken to reconsider its portfolio of brands.

“We discovered that the average American consumer drinks 12 different brands in one year,” says Nuno Teles, chief marketing officer for Heineken USA in White Plains, N.Y. “That was a very important fact that made us think: ‘How can we be competitive in this business context, of multiple brands and consumers not being loyal to one specific brand but to a repertoire of brands?’ ”

In 2014, Heineken took a look at its long-held English cider Strongbow and gave it a complete makeover. The traditional dry ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CT: Five breweries added in Connecticut in 2017
Connecticut added 14 breweries to its budding craft beer industry in 2016, bringing the total number of operating breweries to 49 by year's end, according to the latest data from the Brewers Association, a national trade organization. Five more breweries have since been added in 2017, Hartford Courant reported on August 18.

The number represents a 40 percent increase over 2015, and the state has tripled its amount of breweries since 2011, the data shows. Still, Connecticut ranks in the middle of the pack when it comes to production levels and economic impact.

The state ranks 29th in the number of breweries per capita. The breweries had an economic impact of $569 million in 2014, the last year for which data is available. The breweries produced an estimated 129,825 barrels of craft beer last year, which ranks 30th in the nation and 31st in gallons per alcohol-eligible adult.

In New England, too, Connecticut still lags behind, despite its surge in recent growth. Vermont is a national leader when it comes to craft beer, leading the nation in its amount of breweries per capita and their production. Maine is also in the top 10 in all three categories, and only Rhode Island produces less ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: American Icon Brewery’s opening date set for mid-October
The first brewing tanks arrived last week at the American Icon Brewery in downtown Vero Beach, marking a milestone in the old building’s transformation from power plant to microbrewery, restaurant and event space, TCPalm reported on August 21.

Construction at the building continues at a frenzied speed, with an opening date set for mid-October, said developer Michael Rechter.

Although original plans called for the opening in July, the time was pushed to the fall to make sure everything is completed exactly as Rechter envisions.

“Everything is in process,” said Rechter on Aug. 16, as he met with construction foremen at the site on 20th Street near 14th Avenue.

“We are on-track; the construction crews said they’ll be out of here in six weeks and once the construction is done, we’ll need a few weeks to run through operations, and of course, brew the beer.”

Rechter bought the building from the city last year for $500,000 and is expanding the site to include a patio and garden area, as well as a mezzanine that will allow customers to look down on the operations of the active brewery.

Renderings of the American Icon Brewery have been posted on Facebook for months, spurring interest from people who want the ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Humble Beginnings Brewing aiming to open in Eastern Ontario this autumn
The Morrisburg Leader reports that a new brewery will be opening soon in Ingleside, a small town located approximately 25 km west of Cornwall in Eastern Ontario.

Humble Beginnings Brewing is being established by Pierre Doucette and Susan Wallwork, who are setting up the business in a former drug store in Ingleside Plaza.

Doucette tells the paper that they plan to launch with a Pale Ale and IPA, and from there will “have a couple of core beers that we brew often, and mix them up with some seasonal brews or one-offs.”

Humble Beginnings is aiming to open this autumn, and will feature a taproom and retail store.

Brewery news USA, VA: Ober Brewing Company to open in Salem by the end of the year
Thanks to a city ordinance change, Ober Brewing Company's first small-scale brewery is setting up shop in Salem's historically industrial areas, WSLS reported on August 18.

"It's hard to find the right spot to put a brewery, especially with zoning. Salem went through the zoning change and we got lucky with our special permit," said David Ober.

Microbreweries like Ober have to apply for a permit with the city and go through a public hearing process before opening the doors. The paperwork and construction process may not be the easiest, but for David, it's a labor of love.

"We like it to be Ober Brewing Company because it's our name, it's a family-owned business and probably always will be. It will never change. We're proud of that and proud of being local too," said David.

Ober Brewing Company has been David's dream for 8 years. Once he started home brewing, he was hooked. Now bringing craft beer to the public is his next big adventure.

"I love to see people's faces when they try beer and it just changes their ideas on the way craft beer is and the way beer should taste," said David.

Ober Brewing will offer a tasting room and bar, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Arcadia Brewing Co. to close brewery in downtown Battle Creek, restart sometime in 2018
Arcadia Brewing Co. plans to close its 21-year-old brewery in downtown Battle Creek on Sept. 2, find a new space, and restart sometime in 2018, MLive.com reported on August 18.

"We need to pause, hit 'reset' and find a more suitable space that really lifts the standards that everyone had for us in Battle Creek from the very beginning, back in 1996," said Tim Suprise, founder and chief executive officer of the craft beer and tavern business.

He said there are structural issues with the brewery's 6,000-square-foot longtime location at 103 W. Michigan Ave. in downtown Battle Creek and that has created challenges for the business.

Mentioning its roof and drain system, he said, "The building itself has some structural issues and it wasn't continuing to be tenable for us. We have to get a more appropriate space."

Suprise announced the closing on Friday, Aug. 18, to the brewery's 30 workers, saying he hopes to re-engage many of them when the new location opens. He said he also hopes many of them are able to find positions at his Arcadia Ales location in downtown Kalamazoo.

"It is with bittersweet excitement that we will be closing our longstanding brewery in Battle Creek on Sept. 2," he ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Pontoon Brewing breaks ground in Sandy Springs
When Georgia law changes this fall to allow microbreweries to sell beer on their premises, the Perimeter area will finally have its own neighborhood brewery. On Friday, Aug. 18, the founders of Pontoon Brewing broke ground at a site in Northridge Business Park on Dunwoody Place in Sandy Springs, Dunwoody Crier reported on August 22.

The fruition of a dream of four college friends – Eddie Serrine, Eric Lemus, Sean O’Keefe and Marcus Powers – who have been home brewing for years, the deal would not have happened if the city of Sandy Springs had not rewritten its ordinances.

“They first approached us in the fall of 2016,” said Sandy Springs Director of Economic Development Andrea Worthy. “Our ordinances were not clear on whether or not microbreweries were allowed.”

Worthy and her team quickly went to work, rewrote the city code by creating a microbrewery category and presented it to City Council, where it was approved, all in 60 days.

“This is the kind of business we want to attract,” said Worthy. “Any time you can get a growing entrepreneurial business popular with residents and tourists, it’s a win-win for everyone.”

“It’s transformational for this part of our community,” said Mayor Rusty Paul. “It’s a ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Record 18.2 million litres of low and non-alcoholic beer consumed in the UK over the past year
Brits consumed a record 18.2 million litres of low and non-alcoholic beer this year, while sales of super-strength brews fell into a major decline, The Grocer reported on August 23.

Value sales of low and non-alcoholic brews grew by £5.9 mln (20.5%) to £34.7 mln over the past 12 months, with volumes up 16.8% – the highest growth in five years, latest figures reveal [Nielsen 52 w/e 15 July 2017].

Meanwhile, sales of super-strength beer (above 7.5% abv) were down £8.9 mln (11.6%) to £68 mln, on volumes down 12% – a signal that, despite low and non-alcoholic beers accounting for just 0.9% of total beer sales, the balance had “tipped in favour of moderation products”, said Nielsen analyst Richard Harrison.

It was “a positive step for the brewing industry and the government and councils who have sought to discourage the sale of high-strength lagers,” he added.

The news comes as around one in five adults now claim to be teetotal [Nielsen]. Mainstream and craft beer brands have launched a raft of zero-alcohol lines since the start of 2017.

Heineken launched 0.0, a booze-free variant of its eponymous lager in March. It has racked up £1.1 mln in sales, picking up listings in Tesco, Sainsbury’s ...More info on site

Brewery news India: United Breweries targeting 25% share in imported beer market in the next 18 months
United Breweries Ltd (UBL) is targeting to capture 25 per cent share in imported beer market in India in the next 18 months by introducing global brands from the portfolio of its promoter Heineken NV, Economic Times reported on August 20.

The Bengaluru-based company has introduced in India five brands - Sol, Edelweiss, Affligem, Dos Equis and Desperados - from Heineken's stable in select cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad.

It also plans to sell these brands in Goa, Gurgaon, Chandigarh and Pune later.

"We are targeting half a million cases (annually) in the imported beer market, which is around 25 per cent market share of this segment, in next 18 months," UBL Senior VP - Marketing Samar Singh Sheikhawat told PTI.

Imported beer is a niche market at the moment in India but is growing rapidly driven by affluent consumers in top metro markets, he added.

"This was a gap in our portfolio as we do not have a solution for those kinds of customers...(but) we have realised that Heineken has a massive range globally and we can tap in this very easily," Sheikhawat said.

Heineken NV is a promoter of UBL, which also brews the Heineken beer brand in India.

UBL has high expectation from ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Hite Jinro’s beer market share expected to increase
Hite Jinro’s soju and beer market share will rise, said Dongbu Securities on Aug. 23, maintaining a “buy” recommendation and 31,000 won (US$27.44) target price, The Investor reports.

Its rival Muhak’s dominance in Busan and South Gyeongsang Province is weakening. Combined with expanded soju making facilities in Masan and continued marketing campaign targeting the region, the liquor company will strengthen its foothold, said the securities firm.

Its flagship Chamisul soju remains strong in the metropolitan area while rivals are burdened by excessive manufacturing line expansion, added the firm, estimating that its soju market share has climbed to 52 percent.

Lotte Chilsung’s aggressive launching campaign targeting restaurants has heightened competition in the beer sector, but sales of regular beer may stop sliding in August. Growing demand for its lower-priced beer FiLite will boost its factory operation rates, said analyst Cha Jae-heon.

Its stocks rebounded thanks to the decent second-quarter earnings and considering the strong advantage it has, the likelihood of market dominance recovery will continue to bolster its stock price, said the analyst.

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Sales of canned beer enjoying sharp rise
Czechs are still the world’s leading beer drinkers, but consumer habits are changing. Whereas once the biggest share of beer produced was consumed at the pub, now Czechs are taking it home. While pubs and restaurants are selling less beer, sales of bottled beer have not dropped and sales of canned beer have seen a sharp rise, Radio Prague reported on August 21.

The once firm conviction among Czech beer lovers that canned beer loses its quality, tastes flat and acquires a metallic tang has been undermined by the younger generation of drinkers for whom cans are perfectly normal packaging.

Statistics released by the Czech Union of Breweries and Malthouses confirm that an increasing number of consumers are now throwing canned beer into their shopping carts rather than lugging home carts of bottled beer. Sales of canned beer in the month of June were 73 percent higher year-on-year and market chains such as Kaufland, Globus or Macro all report increased sales. This despite the fact that canned beer is still on average 3 crowns more expensive than bottled beer. Martina Ferencová, executive director at the Czech Union of Breweries and Malthouses, explains what is behind the changing trend.

“Canned beer is ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Carlsberg CEO can’t rule out further job cuts in the UK
The chief executive of Carlsberg has said he cannot rule out further jobs cuts as the beer giant pushes ahead with a sweeping efficiency drive, potentially leaving British jobs hanging in the balance, the Evening Express reported on August 20.

The Danish brewer last year revealed it had axed more than 2,000 white-collar jobs as part of the restructure and would outsource beer distribution in the UK, impacting around 900 jobs by March 2018.

It will leave Carlsberg UK with about 950 staff – chiefly across its brewery and head office in Northampton and its customer contact centre in Leeds.

Carlsberg chief executive Cees ‘t Hart told the Press Association that additional job cuts at the firm have not been taken off the table.

“You can never of course say that no cuts will be done in the future, so there are no promises on that one. However, we don’t have any other plans than we had announced more or less a year ago.”

But Mr ‘t Hart said Carlsberg was still “in the execution mode” of its turnaround plan, “so we’re not done yet.”

“But everybody who is involved in that, and is concerned, has been informed.”

Carlsberg has its efficiency drive to thank for helping ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Shares of United Breweries Holdings to be suspended from trading for non-compliance with financial results and non-payment of fines
Shares of United Breweries Holdings Ltd (UBHL) will be suspended from trading with effect from Sept 8 in the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) due to non-compliance with financial results and non-payment of fines for two consecutive quarters, the bourses said on August 17, Times of India reported.

Also, the entire promoter shareholding of the company has been frozen with immediate effect. The promoter and promoter group, led by former liquor baron Vijay Mallya, holds 52.34% of the company, as per the latest disclosures made by the company in December.

UBHL, which has ordered by the Karnataka High Court to be wound up, had failed to report its quarterly results for the three months ended December 31, 2016 and March 31, 2017, respectively. In case the company complies with the requirements before September 4, then the proposed trading suspension would not be imposed, BSE said.

The company had informed the BSE in June that information required to prepare the financial results is no longer with the company due to search and seizure conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), related to the probes on Mallya. Accordingly it requested market regulator SEBI to relax the strict enforcement of ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: With Byron Bay Brewery now at full capacity, Lion moves production of one of its beers to West End Brewery
Lion has announced that its Byron Bay Brewery has reached capacity, with kegs and cans of one of its beers now in production at West End Brewery in Adelaide, Brews News reported on August 22.

The Hazy One, a Cloudy Pale Lager, is the first beer that has graduated to off-site production, just under 12 months after the brewery re-opened under Lion’s ownership.

“We’ve grown in keg sales – the venue’s obviously selling a decent chunk of the beer we brew, but we’ve got Byron Bay on tap in the surrounding geographies, north and south of Byron,” Lion general manager of craft, Gordon Treanor told Brews News.

“It’s going really well in those venues and that’s led us to the point where we’re at full capacity.”

Treanor said Lion was keen to get on the front foot and inform all stakeholders of the development, given the controversy that surrounded the move to brew off-site under the previous ownership.

“We’ll be very transparent about the fact that the beer is being brewed at Byron, but also in other locations around Australia,” he said.

“We’ll call out that fact clearly and transparently on the packaging, as we do with all of our beers.

“It will allow us to share ...More info on site
