    • 2. Brewery News

Japanese brewers are turning to overseas markets as a new revenue source as the domestic market has become saturated, with Suntory Ltd. aiming for a 70 % jump in sales and Kirin Brewery Co. seeking a 10 % hike, Asia Pulse Pte Ltd. Reported on October 8. Suntory, which currently operates three breweries in the coastal area of China, is considering acquiring breweries in inland regions in 2004 and afterward to boost its sales in the country to 500,000kl by 2006, up 70 % from 2002. The overseas sales increase target is a modest 10 per cent for Kirin in the same four-year period, but the target in terms of volume, at 2.6 million kiloliters, is much larger than Suntory's. Kirin hopes the business cooperation arrangements with its group member brewers, including San Miguel Corp. of the Philippines and Lion Nathan Ltd. of Australia, will help the company hit the sales target. Kirin has seen its overseas sales of beer increasing 2-3 % in recent years. Asahi Breweries Ltd., the largest brewer in Japan, plans to raise its overseas beer sales from 530,000kl in 2002 to 600,000kl by 2006.

Chile's leading brewer CCU reported on October 8 a 10.6 % increase in third-quarter sales by volume compared with the same period in 2002, led by soaring Argentina beer sales, Reuters reported. CCU, controlled by Chile's Quinenco and Heineken NV of the Netherlands, sold 2.411 million hectoliters in the July-September period, it said in a statement of preliminary volumes. Its Chilean sales during the quarter rose 6.1 % year-on-year to 1.975 million hectoliters while in Argentina they rose 37 % in the same period to 435,550 hectoliters. In the first nine months of this year, total sales volumes were up 8.8 % against a year earlier to 7.567 million hectoliters. CCU sells beer, wine, soft drinks, nectars and mineral water in Chile and beer and wine in Argentina. The company posted a net loss in the second quarter of $1.4 million, trimming losses from the same period last year by 65.5 %. The company's shares in the Santiago Stock Exchange rose 3.7 percent on Wednesday to 2,510 pesos, while its American Depositary Receipts in New York were up 4.92 % to $19.20.

The plants, belonging to SUN Interbrew Ukraine, incorporating most of Ukrainian brewing enterprises, increased beer production by 24.8 % up to 434.87 million litres in January-September this year in comparison with the same period of 2002, Interfax-Ukraine news agency informed. In September the company produced 4.354 million dekalitres of beer - 20.7 % up from September 2002. "SUN Interbrew Ukraine" owns Kharkov-based brewery "Rogan'", Chernigov "Desna" and Nikolaev "Yantar". In the 2nd quarter of 2003 the company's share in Ukrainian market of beer increased to 33.8 % against 30.6 % in the same period last year. Company "SUN Interbrew" was established in spring 1999 by Belgian Interbrew and international financial and investment group SUN for work in the markets of Russia and Ukraine. Russian and Ukrainian branches of the company own 34.25 % share of "SUN Interbrew". The rest of the shares are in free turnout in the stock market.

The Netherlands leading brewer, Heineken N.V., announced on October 10 that all necessary regulatory approvals for the acquisition of the Austrian-based brewery group BBAG have been granted unconditionally. As a result Heineken will complete the acquisition of 79.8% of Getranke-Beteiligungs-AG (GeBAG), the holding company controlling the BBAG Group, on 15 October 2003. Heineken and BBAG will ultimately combine all their operations in GeBAG, which will be renamed Brau Union AG. Brau Union AG will be responsible for all operations in thirteen Central European countries (Austria, Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Hungary, Serbia-Montenegro, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovenia, Macedonia and Albania). An immediate start will be made on integrating Heineken and BBAG operations in Central Europe, in order to realise the synergy gains which are expected to accrue from combining their businesses. The restructuring projects already initiated by BBAG in their markets will continue. In the coming months, Heineken will announce detailed integration plans for Poland and Hungary in particular...more info

      4. Barley News

As of the current moment export of barley from Ukraine has virtually ceased, General Director of Ukraine's Grain Association Volodymyr Klimenko has told a news conference today, AgriMarket.info reported on October 8. He believes that the main cause of stop in the exports has been the price level in the world market, which makes the exports of this crop unprofitable. A certain role was also played by adverse situation in local market and restrictions on grain movements (including barley), imposed in many regions. "As of today the ban has been kept only in Dnepropetrovsk region", Klimenko said. He said that total amount of the 2003 crop barley, contracted for export, was 1.1 million tonnes, of which 700,000 tonnes had already been shipped out of the country. "Time will show weather the concluded contracts will be completed", he said.

Slovakia plans to export about 80 thousand tonnes of barley this year, according to the representatives of the Slovak Ministry of Agriculture. According to the Ministry in 2002/03 barley crop in Slovakia increased by 12% up to 793 thousand tonnes versus last year data, while wheat crop decreased by 41%.
