Brewery news Canada, BC: Silver Valley Brewing sets opening date at September 23
The city of Maple Ridge on the north-eastern corner of the Metro Vancouver region is about to see the launch of its third craft brewery, with the opening of Silver Valley Brewing this coming weekend, Canadian Beer News reported on September 19.

Located at 11952 224 Street #104 – just a short walk from the city’s other two breweries, Maple Meadows and Ridge – Silver Valley will be opening on Saturday September 23rd at 11:00 AM, with a promise that “our first batches of beer and a decent food menu will be there for all to partake in.”

While no further details of the beers that will be available have been announced, the brewery website indicates that it intends to offer “a wide range of beer styles with special focus being given to English style ales.”

Brewery news USA, CA: Bike Dog Brewing’s second location opened in Sacramento
The slow-motion renovation of Sacramento’s Broadway corridor took another step forward on September 19 with the opening of popular Bike Dog Brewing’s second location next to Selland’s Market-Cafe, the Sacramento Bee reported.

Sage Smith, one of Bike Dog’s four co-founders, said the brewery decided to expand from its original West Sacramento brewery and tap room, in an industrial area near the Port of West Sacramento, because it saw an opportunity to do business in the central city.

“It’s part of the core,” Smith said. “We were looking for a true neighborhood feel.”

With Bike Dog’s opening, there are now three breweries on the historical stretch of Broadway between Oak Park and the Sacramento River, including Oak Park Brewing and New Helvetia.

On September 19, the new tap room officially opened at 3 p.m. Doug Finley was among the first in line. A regular at Bike Dog’s West Sacramento brewery, Finley said he’s now more likely to visit the Broadway location because it’s closer to his home in Tahoe Park, about four miles east on Broadway.

“This is a little closer to my house, and I’m a big Selland’s fan,” Finley said.

Selland’s, known for its busy market-cafe in East Sacramento, opened recently across the street from ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OK: Nothing’s Left Brewing Co. signs lease on building in Tulsa’s brewing center
Nothing’s Left Brewing Co. has signed a lease on a building near downtown that is quickly becoming Tulsa’s brewing center, the Tulsa World reported on September 19.

The location at 1501 E. Sixth St. is in the Pearl District, on the corner of Sixth Street and Rockford Avenue, and was originally a Texaco station that still has the red stars on the building.

“Basically, this building used to be an old Texaco back in the day. I think it was built about 1954, and we are going in to renovate the space and put a brewery in it,” said Travis Richards, owner and brewer of Nothing’s Left. “It is pretty rough inside now, but we are looking at about six months of renovations, maybe a little less.”

Richards plans to open Nothing’s Left Brewing Co.’s new location by March 2018. Richards started Nothing’s Left a few years ago and has been looking for a home while contract brewing at another brewery in Oklahoma City.

Now, Nothing’s Left will have a location in what is becoming a brewery district in Tulsa.

The renovation plans will create a view of the brewhouse from nearly everywhere and places to sit underneath the awning where lots of cars have ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SC: Seminar Brewing taking over larger location in Florence
Seminar Brewing is taking over a new location in Florence and making a $1 million investment, WMBF reported on September 21.

It’s an effort to make its name more known across the region. The brewery is now on South Lucas Street, just one mile from downtown Florence and two miles from Interstate 95.

It opened its doors recently in the location that formerly housed the Young Pecan's plant. Head brewer Bryan Fisher staked out the building two years ago.

“As more time went on, it made sense to move and this hadn’t sold yet. It seemed meant to be in a lot of ways,” Fisher said.

Seminar's tasting room location next to Red Bone Alley was only 1,100 square feet. It can now work out of a 1,300-square-foot warehouse.

The brewery's beer is distributed across the Pee Dee and can also be found all over in cities like Greenville, Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Spartanburg and Columbia.

With the expansion, Seminar now has the chance to take advantage of more retail opportunity as well.

“Now this is going to consume a lot more beer right here inside the facility, which we wanted to do and we weren’t covering the entire state of South Carolina either, so we wanted enough ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, AB: Grain Bin Brewing closing current location in preparation for a move to new space
Grain Bin Brewing has announced that it will be closing its current location on September 22nd in preparation for a move to a new space elsewhere in Grande Prairie, and it has marked the occasion with a release of a new limited edition beer, Canadian Beer News reported on September 12.

Farewell Imperial Pilsner is a strong lager described as follows:

Lagered for 2 months, aged for 8 in bourbon barrels, and then bottle conditioned, this beer is almost a year in the making. Finishing at 9.5% and bourbon gold, it has a fruity aroma, complicated vanilla flavour, and a smooth, balanced finish.

Farewell is available now in the Grain Bin retail store, which will be open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, and 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Thursday, for the next two weeks.

Details on the new Grain Bin brewery, including its location and expected opening date, have yet to be announced.

Brewery news USA, MD: Saints Row Brewing leases its first retail store and tasting room, to open later this month
Real estate firm Transwestern announced on September 20 it represented local brewery startup Saints Row Brewing in the lease for its first retail store and tasting room, a 3,000-square-foot flex space at 1211 – 1213 Taft St. in Rockville, Maryland. Transwestern Senior Vice President Ethan Bernardi and Vice President Nathan Bortnick represented Saints Row in the transaction.

Saints Row Brewing, which plans to open later this month, will offer three traditional beers and three seasonal beers. The company is a family-owned business started by Rockville native Tony Prebula, who began homebrewing as a hobby in 2010. He then attended brewing school and worked for two years as a head brewer at a Baltimore brewery.

“I’m excited to be doing what I love and investing in the city I love and grew up in with my wife and daughter by my side,” said Prebula. “We hope Saints Row can be a catalyst for all our friends and neighbors to rediscover everything our community has to offer. We’re planning collaborations with other local businesses to celebrate who we are and build up Rockville from the inside out.”

Saints Row plans to host cross-promotional events with other local businesses and is currently planning an event with ...More info on site

Brewery news EU & Japan: Asahi Group to ramp up sales of its Super Dry beer in Europe
Asahi Group Holdings Ltd. will ramp up sales of its top-selling Super Dry beer in Europe with local production aided by faster integration of last year’s $11 billion purchase of brands from Anheuser-Busch InBev NV, Bloomberg reported on September 21.

Japan’s largest brewer will produce Super Dry in Padua, Italy, starting this month and sell the premium brand in Italy and the U.K. by January, President Akiyoshi Koji said in an interview on September 21. Koji had previously expected sales to begin in 2019.

Asahi sees overseas sales of Super Dry in Europe and other markets outside of China, Hong Kong and the U.S. almost doubling to 11 million cases within five years on distribution efficiencies. Koji said the brewer is also hoping to use its Super Dry brand to build a stronger presence in the U.S. as it seeks ways of expanding its sales channels there.

Asahi is reaping benefits after strengthening its foothold in the European beer market with last year’s purchase of brands that catapulted it to be among the four biggest brewers on the continent. The Japanese company has been stepping up expansion overseas as demand at home wanes and local competition with rivals like Kirin Holdings Co. ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: AB InBev acquiring New South Wales-based craft brewer 4 Pines
The world’s biggest brewer AB InBev is acquiring Manly, New South Wales-based craft brewer 4 Pines for an undisclosed amount, The Australian reported on September 22.

Belgium-headquartered AB InBev already owns the Melbourne-based Carlton & United Breweries.

4 Pines said the deal would enable its operations to expand while retaining its people, culture and identity. 4 Pines will continue to operate its Brookvale and Manly breweries.

“Will keep doing what we’ve always done, except now we are able to realise our long-term goals even sooner and immediately roll out some plans that are seriously epic,” said 4-Pines co-founder Jaron Mitchell.

Originally from Western Australia, Mr Mitchell moved to Manly on Sydney’s northern beaches, chasing a career in the accounting and finance sector

AB InBev’s Asia-Pacific south zone president Jan Craps said he was excited to be partnering with 4 Pines. “We will support their ambitious plans for the future, using our expertise and capability to help them get their exceptional beer to more people in Australia and globally,” he said.

The 4 Pines team would be unchanged and management would remain in place to help grow the business, AB InBev said.

AB InBev took charge of CUB last year.

Brewery news South Korea: Corporate watchdog launches obstruction investigation into Hite Jinro
Korea’s corporate watchdog has launched an investigation into Hite Jinro, one of the country’s largest distillers, for obstructing an investigation, industry sources said on September 20.

Officials from the Fair Trade Commission had previously conducted an on-site inspection into Hite Jinro’s alleged violations of local fair trade laws in April, according to the sources. At the time, some company employees disrupted the commission’s enforcement, they noted.

The Fair Trade Commission has been looking into allegations that the company gave illegal business favors to Seoyoung E&T, an industrial container manufacturer run by Hite Jinro’s owner and his son.

The watchdog has stressed that it will take a firm stance on future instances of probe obstruction and refusal to submit related evidence.

Established in 1924, Hite Jinro is one of the leading alcohol manufacturers in Korea. Its Chamisul soju is top in terms of market share, and its Hite beer is second in the industry.

Earlier this year, Hyundai Steel, the country’s second-biggest steelmaker by sales, was fined 312 million won ($275,600) for hampering an investigation.
