Brewery news USA, MT: Mountains Walking Brewing opens its doors in Bozeman
There’s a teaching in Buddhist philosophy that compares humans to mountains. In order to understand your own walking, the teaching goes, you must first understand mountains walking.

For Gustav Dose, this type of introspection is what life’s all about. If you ask Dose, there’s nothing better than understanding constraints and conventions and then finding ways to work around them, The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reported on October 1.

Which is what brings him to beer. Sitting in a booth in his freshly built brewery, Mountains Walking, Dose explained his love for the freedom and unpredictability of brewing.

There are several conventional styles of beer, but within those there are a million ways to experiment — brewing with old wine barrels, for instance, or fermenting the suds in an open container to allow in flavors from the air. And each batch, even if it’s the same recipe, will come out slightly different depending on the day.

In some ways, Dose said, “brewing and life are the same.”

“We have an infinite diversity of microorganisms to play with,” he said. “Every change creates a different product and nothing is staying the same.”

If brewing is life, then Bozeman’s newest brewery is the 42-year-old’s baby.

Dose purchased the Plum Avenue ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Chatty Monks Brewing Co. planning to open new brewery in Reading
West Reading's Chatty Monks Brewing Co. is planning to open a new brewery in Reading, the Reading Eagle reported on September 30.

While the facility will increase Chatty Monks' brewing capacity and free up space in its West Reading brewpub, it will not initially be open to the public, said co-founder Rob Metzger. A taproom is a possibility down the road, Metzger said, but he and his partners want to get the brewing operations up and running before they focus any attention on that.

"We want to get to that point, but with zoning and everything, it would've held up the entire project had we tried to do it all at once," Metzger said.

The brewery will be located in a section of 101 N. Carroll St., Reading. The building is the former home to Van Bennett Food Co. Inc., which made Betty's Salads and Betty's Potato Filling before closing in February 2015.

Chatty Monks will occupy about 4,300 square feet in the 12,000-square-foot building, which is also home to a roofing company. In addition to a production area, the facility will also have office space and an area for barrel aging.

There are several reasons Chatty Monks is opening the new facility, Metzger said. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Noble Creature Cask House, Modern Methods Brewingn coming to the Mahoning Valley this year
Beer lovers won’t need to wait much longer for their favorite beverage to begin flowing at two new craft breweries in the Mahoning Valley, the Youngstown Vindicator reported on October 1.

Noble Creature Cask House, 126 East Rayen Ave. in Youngstown, is set to open this month. Modern Methods Brewing, 125 West Market St., Suite W2 in Warren (in David Grohl Alley), is expected to open before the end of 2017.

Each brewery will be an important part of its respective downtown’s revitalization. Both will feature brewing operations and beer-tasting rooms.

Noble Creature and Modern Methods are part of a two-year wave of craft brewery openings across the Mahoning Valley, including Birdfish Brewing in Columbiana, Paladin Brewing in Austintown, Numbers Brewing in Lisbon and Biker Brewhouse in Austintown.

Several breweries also have opened in the past two years in Lawrence and Mercer counties in Pennsylvania, including Brewtus Brewing in Sharon, Stone Church Pizza House and Brewpub in Hermitage, Crooked Tongue Brewing in Edinburg and Brew 32 in Pulaski.

More craft breweries are on the way throughout the region and the country.

In its June 30 midyear report, the Brewers Association in Boulder, Colo., reports there have never been as many breweries operating in the U.S. – ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Perfect Plain Brewing Co. close to opening in Pensacola
After more than two years of planning, permits and construction, the owners of Perfect Plain Brewing Co. are close to being able to sit back and enjoy a cold one, the Pensacola News Journal reported on October 2.

D.C. Reeves, co-owner of the new brewery at 50 E. Garden St., said if there are no delays, the company is on target to open its doors in November.

"Our goal is to have a soft opening by Nov. 15 and to have a grand opening on Nov. 21," Reeves said to the News Journal on September 29.

Perfect Plain Brewing is a collaboration between Reeves and two native-Florida brewers, Brett Schweigert and Reed Odeneal, who honed their hop-steeping skills in the craft beer mecca of Asheville, North Carolina, before returning home to the Sunshine State.

Odeneal, who is from Tallahassee, worked with Schweigert, a Pensacola native, in Asheville when they got the call from Reeves two years ago to come back to Florida and open Perfect Plain Brewing.

The company hosted a private taste testing at the new Cowork Annex on October 2 to unveil their new beers.

"We're going to have approachable beer that's welcoming in a hot climate, but we're also going to push the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CT: Charter Oak Brewing slated to launch in early 2018
Danbury is slated to have its own brewery in early 2018, the Danbury News Times reported on October 2.

Charter Oak Brewing continues to receive the necessary approvals, permits and zoning amendments to open a brewery and tap room at 39 Shelter Rock Road. Last week, a representative from the engineering firm designing the building spoke to the Danbury Zoning Commission as the brewery sought a special permit as the use includes the sale of alcohol.

“It will not create any nuisances and won’t have any noise, smoke or emissions, or anything of that nature,” Dainius Virbickas, a professional engineer with Artel Engineering Group of Brookfield, told the commission. “It fits in with the traffic.”

Charter Oak Brewing was founded in April 2011 by P. Scott Vallely of New Canaan. It introduced its first beer about a year later and its bottles are now sold in liquor stores throughout the state. It is also featured on tap at several bars and restaurants in the state.

Danbury Common Council member John Esposito III spoke in favor of the brewery during the public hearing portion of the zoning meeting last week. “It will create an attraction for the public, which will bring in revenue to our ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Blue Point Brewing Co. breaks ground on new production facility in Patchogue
Blue Point Brewing Co. held a groundbreaking ceremony Sept. 27 for its forthcoming new brewery West Main Street in downtown Patchogue village at a site was formerly the long-time home of a lace factory and most recently housed the now-closed Briarcliffe College, the Long Island Press reported.

The 54,000-square-foot building will now be transformed into a state-of-the-art brewery, featuring a second floor restaurant and tasting room overlooking the brewing operations, along with an outdoor beer garden. The new brewery is expected to open in the summer of 2018, just in time for the 20th anniversary of Blue Point’s founding in Patchogue.

“We’re proud to break ground on our new brewery right here where it all began,” said Mark Burford, co-founder and brewmaster emeritus, who added that the new brewery will enable Blue Point’s talented team of brewers to focus on what’s most important to them: the beer. “We will have the equipment and technology to help us bring to life the innovative ideas and recipes we come up for great beers.”

The new brewery is expected to have an annual capacity of 60,000 barrels, substantially higher than Blue Point’s original brewery on River Avenue, just a half mile away.

Blue Point, which was purchased ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Billsburg Brewery to become the first craft brewery in James City County
Billsburg Brewery will invest $1.4 million to expand its brewery operations in James City County, Virginia. The brewery will be the first craft brewery in the locality, joining the vibrant craft beverage industry across the Commonwealth, the Area Development Online reported on September 29.

“We envision Billsburg Brewery as a destination brewery where visitors come to enjoy meticulously-brewed craft beer and stay to enjoy surrounding local attractions,” said David Baum, Owner of Billsburg Brewery. “We will offer a unique visitor experience through small batch beer and food, educational brewery tours, and a tasting room. Billsburg will also serve the community as a venue to host a diverse array of events held throughout the year.”

“With more than 225 breweries across the Commonwealth, craft beer is big business and an important driver for economic growth in Virginia,” said Governor Terry McAuliffe. “The addition of Billsburg Brewery will be an exciting development not only for the residents of James City County, but also for visitors who are looking for an authentic destination brewery experience.”

As an incentive, Governor McAuliffe approved a $100,000 grant from the Virginia Tourism Growth Fund (VTGF) to assist with the development of Billsburg Brewery. The funds will be used for additional ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Earth Rider Brewery’s first beer to hit taps in a few weeks
Apparently 8 a.m. isn't too early to start thinking about beer, especially if you're making it.

Superior’s Earth Rider Brewery was bustling on the morning of September 28 as one of its first batches of beer was assembled — a wheat ale, set to hit taps in a few weeks.

"We're going to be brewing a nice wide variety of ales and lagers to start," said founder Tim Nelson. "We're going to be having a pale ale, an IPA, the normal beers to get our feet wet, recipes we know well."

Though the $2.5 million brewery has been in Nelson's mind since he left Fitger's Brewhouse in 2015, last week marked an important step toward getting the Superior-made suds in the hands of drinkers.

The warehouse at 1617 N. Third St. took on a breadlike scent early on September 28 as a thousand pounds of grain was mixed with warm water to start unlocking the sugars that yeast would later feast on.

While brewing, and building a brewery from scratch, entails a lot of hurry-up-and-wait, when things happen they happen fast.

"Part of the reason I was so interested in joining up with Earth Rider is the learning curve," said Allyson Rolph, who is co-lead brewer ...More info on site

Brewery news Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria's 39.70 billion naira share sale oversubscribed
Guinness Nigeria's 39.70 billion naira ($126 mln) share sale to existing shareholders was 116 percent subscribed, the company said on October 4.

The brewer, the local unit of the world's leading spirit maker Diageo, said in a statement it sold five new shares from the company to shareholders for every 11 held, at 58 naira each.

The company, which is 54 percent owned by Diageo, said two shareholders applied for 50 million shares and above during the rights issue.

Diageo has said it was willing to take up its rights in the share issue to maintain its shareholding.

The company had been seeking to raise funds to strengthen its balance sheet after it posted its first annual loss in 30 years in the 12 months to June 2016.

Guinness Nigeria shares traded flat on October 4 at 98.55 naira on the Lagos bourse, up about 18 percent so far this year.

Brewery news Japan: Asahi Breweries raising beer prices for the first time since 2008
Asahi Breweries Ltd. will raise the price of beer delivered mainly to bars and restaurants by about 10 percent in March 2018, the company’s first price hike since 2008, Asahi Shimbun reported on October 4.

The increase will apply to bottles and barrels of the flagship Asahi Super Dry and other labels sold to wholesalers. The price for beer in cans will remain unchanged.

Changes to the liquor tax law that took effect on June 1 more strictly control sales of beer and other alcoholic beverages at prices below the cost involved in retailing them, unless there is a good reason for doing so.

Asahi decided to raise the price of beer because of higher distribution costs caused by a labor shortage, company officials said.

According to the officials, the commercial beer market has been struggling in recent years because of the shrinking population and younger Japanese shifting to other alcoholic beverages.

In 2016, sales of bottled beer decreased by about 40 percent over the figure in 2008. Sales of beer barrels to commercial establishments also declined by 8 percent over the same period.

Barley news Ukraine: Barley inventories down 19.6% as of September 1
According to the State Statistics Service, 23.35 mln tonnes of cereals and pulses were available in Ukraine as of September 1, 2017, or 4.5% less than at the same time last year (24.44 mln tonnes), UkrAgroConsult reported on October 4.

As of the reporting date, wheat stocks were down 5.2% year-on-year at 16.78 mln tonnes against 17.7 mln tonnes as of September 1, 2016. Barley inventories fell by 19.6% against last year, to 3.26 mln tonnes (4.06 mln tonnes in September 2016).

The decrease in grain inventories results both from some yield decline this year and quite active exports in the first months of the season, reports UkrAgroConsult.

At the same time, grower and miller stocks of corn are up 20.4% year-on-year at 1.61 mln tonnes against 1.34 mln tonnes as of September 1, 2016.

Brewery news Hong Kong: Gweilo Beer to open Hong Kong’s largest craft brewery next summer
Hong Kong’s Gweilo Beer, which was set up two and a half years ago in a spare bedroom, will open a new US$5 million craft beer brewery – Hong Kong’s largest – next summer to cater to rising demand for the company’s brews. The brewery, a hi-tech 14,000 sq ft facility in Fo Tan, is currently under construction, The South China Morning Post reported on October 3.

Gweilo, founded by Ian and Emily Jebbitt, and their friend Joe Gould, currently contracts out production of its three beers to another Hong Kong brewery.

“We’ve now outgrown where we make our beer,” says Ian Jebbitt, an intellectual property lawyer, who began brewing beer at home with his father at the age of seven in Oxfordshire in the UK.

“Demand for Gweilo beer is seriously high and for the past year we’ve been at maximum capacity and can’t make any extra beer. We’ve always dreamed of having our own brewery and now we’re in a position to do that,” he says.

A casual chat with a friend and fellow home brewer from Mui Wo on Lantau Island, who works for his family’s construction company, BCI Engineering, led to the latest development, which will enable the company to ...More info on site
