Brewery news Canada, AB: Calgary’s Big Rock Brewery Inc. reports Q3 and nine-month results
Big Rock Brewery Inc. announced on November 2 its financial results for the three and nine months ended September 30, 2017.

"Big Rock continued to grow production volumes and net revenue during the third quarter of 2017," said CEO Wayne Arsenault. "Although our operating results were impacted by increased costs caused by Alberta government revisions to the provincial markup and grant structure, our net markup rate (markup less grant) improved in September due to steps we have taken to optimize our Alberta sales volumes and profit margins, and we expect this improvement to continue. In Ontario, sales more than doubled due to the addition of the Etobicoke brewery in the fall of 2016 and the Liberty Commons at Big Rock Brewery restaurant in early 2017. Although the pace of growth in Alberta was tempered by the discontinuance of two low margin products, this was partially offset by increased sales of other products. Declining sales in British Columbia, due to our efforts to improve margins by de-emphasizing value-priced products and an increase in the number of competing breweries in the province, partly offset sales increases in other provinces."

Brewery news USA, OR: Salem's first Latin American brewery Xicha Brewing now open
Xicha Brewing, Salem's first Latin American brewery, has opened on Patterson Street in West Salem, the Statesman Journal reported on November 3.

After announcing the brewery's plan to open earlier this year, co-owner Ben Mendoza had to overcome a few hurdles, including a surprise lead dust problem that halted construction.

Now, the brewery has opened with tacos, beer and lots of color.

The brewery has six taps open, serving five house beers, a collaboration with a McMinnville brewery and one rotating cider.

Brewer and co-owner Matt Dakopolos is pouring a citrus-forward IPA, a porter and a pale-ale that he brewed on site. In addition, Dakopolos brewed a Czech dark lager with McMinnville brewery Grain Station Brew Works as well as a fresh hop beer made with wild hops from Osprey Farm. The brewery also offers a dry-hopped pale ale with Amarillo hops.

Brewery news USA, IL: Will County Brewing Company gets its final permit and is coming to Shorewood
Craft beer is coming to Shorewood, courtesy of “President and Brewmaster” Jamie Albert, James “Master of Pineapples” Kennedy and Eric “the Numbers Guy” Wills, The Herald-News reported on November 3.

These three make up the founding team of Will County Brewing Company, which received its liquor license from the Illinois’ Liquor Control Commission on November 2. This was the final permit needed to begin distributing and selling its craft beer, according to a picture posted to the company’s Twitter account.

Together Albert, Kennedy and Wills have a combined 12 years of brewing experience, according to the brewery’s website, as well as a “shared vision of bringing something new and exciting to our own hometown.”

The brewery promises to serve craft beer for all tastes, from IPAs to stouts.

Will County Brewing Company is slated to be open by the beginning of 2018.

Brewery news USA, OH: Boss Dog Brewing opens in Cleveland Heights
After years and years (and years and years) of dreaming, negotiating, laboring and clawing tooth and nail, Boss Dog Brewing opened in Cleveland Heights on November 2. The Sweet brothers, Josh and Jason, started their journey to the opening nearly a decade ago on a home stove, Patch.com reports.

The brothers discovered a passion for home brewing while living in Cleveland Heights. They used kitchen equipment to create their own beers. It was a passion project for the two, but hadn't yet fermented as a real business opportunity.

That idea didn't start brewing until the brothers invested in a pilot system, a more advanced way of creating custom beer at home. Josh Sweet told Patch that a pilot system allowed the brothers to start brewing in a manner similar to professional brewers. It also gave the duo the confidence to launch their own brewery.

"We were doing a lot of the same things larger brewers do, we were just doing smaller batches," he said. He then added, "We also saw our beer getting better."

That was when things got serious. Josh started to learn more about running a company. He started to put together a business plan for some kind of brewery.

Jason, meanwhile, went ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Elder Brewing Co. planning November 10 opening
Elder Brewing Co. plans to open Nov. 10, making it the second microbrewery in Joliet, The Herald-News reported on November 3.

Both will have opened within two months of each other.

Elder Brewing will have a small tap room for customers on the first floor of the microbrewery at 218 E. Cass St.

"We're going to have three and possibly four (beers)," said Melissa Polykandriotis. "We have the capacity to do 10. But we're going to start out with three or so next weekend."

Melissa will run the business with her husband Andrew, who is the owner.

The building is the former location of JCM Uniforms, a business owned by the Polykandriotis family and now located at 151 E. Cass St.

The tap room will include a bar, a bar ledge, and a few small tables. Hours will be noon to 7 p.m. Fridays through Sundays and 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursdays.

Elder Brewing will start serving a cream ale, American pale ale and IPA, Polykandriotis said.

"They each have a different level of hoppiness. They should each please a different level of taste," she said.

The opening of Elder Brewing will follow the opening of MyGrain Brewing Co. in early September in the old Union Station downtown. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: Creatures of Habit Brewing grants opening permission by the Anderson Board of Zoning Appeals
A special exception has been granted for the opening of a third brewery in downtown Anderson.

The Anderson Board of Zoning Appeals approved on November 1 a request from Daniel Stachowiak and Dan Shaw to open the brewery and a restaurant at 1031 Meridian St., The Herald Bulletin reported on November 4.

The property had housed Wigs ‘n More and several other businesses in the past few years. The property is zoned for business use.

Creatures of Habit Brewing plans to renovate the entire first and second floors of the two-story structure. Plans provide for 1,550 square feet for open dining and restrooms with a bar and kitchen with the brewery in the rear of the building.

The second floor will be used for additional dining.

The business hopes to open by the end of the year. The company plans on hiring 15 people and will be open from noon to 10 p.m.

Although parking was a concern, there is available on-street parking and the surface parking lot on the southeast corner of 10th and Meridian streets.

The owners already operate the Kettle Top Brew House at the Dickmann Town Center Plaza.

A $35,000 food and beverage tax grant was approved in September.

Brewery news USA, WI: Husband and wife planning new craft brewery Littleport Brewing Co. in downown Racine
Downtown Racine could be home to a new craft brewery next April, the Journal Times reported on November 5.

Mark and Christine Flynn, the owners of DP Wigley, 234 Wisconsin Ave., have been working since about 2010 toward their goal of opening their own craft brewery. They brew beer at home on a smaller scale and operate Hop to It, a home brewing and wine-making supply store. The pair now hopes to open Littleport Brewing Co. next year across the street from DP Wigley on Third Street, aiming for an April opening.

The brewery would include a taproom where customers could try the six beers the Flynns plan to brew and sell. The flavors will include an India pale ale, a Welsh pale ale and stouts. They’ll also sell a lighter beer for people who do not like the full-flavored beverage.

Mark Flynn said they expect to brew about 442 barrels in the first year, containing 31 gallons each. They hope to eventually scale up production to 3,000 to 5,000 barrels in a year. Unlike home brewing, in which they make 5 to 10 gallons at a time, they’ll brew 310 gallons at time at Littleport, Mark Flynn said.

He said they plan to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Defender Brewing slated to open in Chaska next year
A Chaska brewery is slated to open next year, SW News Media reported on November 7.

Defender Brewing is seeking a conditional use permit, and the issue will come before the Chaska Planning Commission on Nov. 8. The Chaska City Council will then vote whether to grant a permit at its Nov. 20 meeting.

Owner Jesse Sams said he hopes to open the business by late spring or early summer of 2018.

The brewery will be in the former Carver County Public Works garage at 850 Chaska Boulevard. Sams is a 1994 Chaska High School graduate and grew up in the Jonathan neighborhood. He lives in Waconia with his family.

When asked why he chose Chaska as the place to start a business he said: “I thought, there’s not a brewery in Chaska and there needs to be one.”

Sams named the brewery, Defender, after his time serving in the U.S. Air Force. “We’re very much going to be local and catering to veterans,” Sams said.

The business will have an outdoor patio that will look over the Minnesota River Valley and Athletic Park, he added.

“Jesse has spent the past nine years home-brewing beer, while also moonlighting at Excelsior Brewing Company, Waconia Brewing Company and Enki ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Forward Operating Base Brewing Co. already open in DuPont
DuPont’s first homegrown brewery is now open. Forward Operating Base Brewing Co. tapped its first beer to the public on Oct. 7, The News Tribune reported on November 3.

The brewery, as the name suggests, is military themed and caters to nearby Joint Base Lewis-McChord. It’s also operated by a veteran.

Jared Wharton spent eight years in the Army before being discharged in 2004.

Opening a brewery has been his longtime dream.

His five-barrel brewery setup is on display at the front entrance. Two beers were on tap last week and more are ready this week.

Whisky news UK: Diageo warns new tax hike could trigger another downturn in Scotch whisky sales
The British boss of Diageo has warned the Government against triggering another downturn in Scotch whisky sales by serving up a tax hike in this month’s Budget, The Express reported on November 6.

Charles Ireland, general manager for Great Britain, Ireland and France, said the move would be counterproductive because Treasury takings from Scotch fell when the Chancellor imposed a 3.9 per cent tax rise earlier this year.

Sales of the spirit dropped by one million bottles in the first half of 2017 following March’s tax rise, which pushed the duty on an average bottle to 80 per cent.

Mr Ireland, who has worked at the Bell’s-to-Johnnie Walker group for 20 years, said the “unfair” levy not only harms the domestic market, but hampers its overseas business by encouraging countries to impose harsher tax regimes.

Mr Ireland said: “The spirits market suffered a downturn when the last increase happened and that there would be another downturn if the tax increased in the next Budget.

“On top of that, it will make it more difficult for us to argue against increases and unfair treatment overseas. I think there is both a domestic impact for our industry and an international impact for our industry.” ...More info on site

Brewery news The Philippines: San Miguel to combine its food, beer and liquor units into a single entity
Philippine conglomerate San Miguel on November 6 said it would combine its food, beer and liquor units into a single entity under a 336.35 billion pesos ($6.55 billion) share-swap transaction, the Nikkei Asian Review reported.

In a stock exchange filing on November 6, the Philippines' largest company by revenue said it would fold San Miguel Brewery and liquor maker Ginebra San Miguel into San Miguel Pure Foods, which sells poultry and dairy products, processed meat and animal feeds. San Miguel Pure Foods will be renamed San Miguel Food and Beverage.

San Miguel will subscribe for 4.24 billion additional common shares in San Miguel Pure Foods after the latter increases its authorized capital stock to 11.6 billion common shares from 2.06 billion.

The conglomerate will pay for those shares with 7.86 billion common shares in San Miguel Brewery and 216.97 million common shares in Ginebra.

The transactions together are worth 336.35 billion pesos, San Miguel said, citing an independent valuation provided by ING Bank. It represents six times the market capitalization of San Miguel Pure Foods. It also eclipses that of Universal Robina, a unit of JG Summit Holdings, which is currently the most valuable food and beverage company in the Philippines with a market ...More info on site

Brewery news Ireland: Ireland’s tax system blamed for higher Guinness price
A pint of Guinness is 66 per cent cheaper in Spain and 21 per cent cheaper in the UK — with Ireland’s tax system blamed for its sky-high prices, The Irish Sun reported on November 8.

Economist David McWilliams is on a mission to find out why Ireland is so expensive compared to our EU counterparts, with everything from booze to buses costing more in Ireland than in other nearby countries.

In his new TV3 series, McWilliams examines exactly why the cost of living is so high in Ireland.

He said: “Why do Irish people, at the end of the month, feel like they’ve been fleeced? Why do people go away and constantly look at the price of things and wonder why it costs so much more here?

“Basic economics will tell you that when you make a product in Dublin at St James’ Gate, it gets more expensive the further away you go because of transport costs. But that’s not the case.”

Looking specifically at the cost of a pint of the black stuff, McWilliams found that it’s 66 per cent cheaper in Spain, 21 per cent cheaper in the UK, 15 per cent less in Germany, and 12 per cent less in Belgium.
