Brewery news Canada: Molson Coors acquires Quebec craft brewery Trou du Diable
MillerCoors parent Molson Coors said on November 9 it has acquired the Quebec craft brewery Trou du Diable, a partnership forged with the intent of expanding the brand’s distribution.

Molson Coors Canada will fold the award-winning microbrewer into its Six Pints Specialty Beer Company, the company’s Canadian craft division. Terms were not disclosed.

Trou du Diable operates a restaurant/brewpub and a standalone brewery in Shawinigan, Quebec, a city of about 50,000 on the Saint-Maurice River roughly halfway between Montreal and Quebec City. The transaction does not include the restaurant, which will remain independent.

It is the fourth Canadian craft brewery Molson Coors has acquired in recent years, joining Creemore Springs, Granville Island Brewing Company and Brasseur de Montreal, each of which fall under its Six Pints division.

“Partnerships like this one and those that we have established in the past demonstrate the importance that we place on the craft and specialty beer segment. They also show that Molson Coors is ready to invest to delight beer drinkers of all kinds,” said Frederic Landtmeters, president and CEO of Molson Coors Canada.

Trou Du Diable, which was founded in December 2005, is known for its saisons, barrel-aged and other specialty beers, opened a second brewery in 2013 ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Craft Brew Alliance reports Q3 2017 results
Craft Brew Alliance, Inc. ("CBA”), a leading craft brewing company, announced on November 8 its financial results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2017.

Third quarter results include continued robust depletion growth for Kona, as well as strong EPS performance driven by improving fundamentals, including revenue per barrel growth, gross margin expansion, and ongoing tighter management of Selling, General & Administrative (SG&A) expenses.

According to the company’s press-release, against a backdrop of intensifying market pressure and competition, Kona continued to outperform all segments of the beer market, growing depletions by 9% in the third quarter and 10% year to date. As the cornerstone of CBA’s "Kona Plus” portfolio strategy, Kona’s strong brand identity and distinctive island-inspired beers resonate with consumers – from its home market of Hawaii, where Kona has grown 8% year to date, to around the world as evidenced by Kona’s continued double-digit international shipment growth. Kona flagship Big Wave Golden Ale delivered 15% depletions growth in the third quarter, driving a 25% increase in depletions year to date, and Hanalei Island IPA, Kona’s latest national beer launched earlier this year, remains a top seller in its category and a top 10 new craft brand nationally.

Brewery news USA, CA: Costa Mesa City Council signs off plans for two new microbreweries
Beer enthusiasts had more to cheer about on November 7 as the Costa Mesa City Council signed off on plans to open two new microbreweries, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The unanimous approvals for applications from Salty Bear Brewing Co., which will open at 2948 Randolph Ave., and Brewing Reserve of California, which will move into 2930 College Ave., will bring the number of microbreweries in Costa Mesa to six.

Salty Bear and Brewing Reserve were approved by the city Planning Commission in September, but council members called up those decisions for additional review.

Brewing Reserve will take about 3,000 square feet of building space in a multi-tenant complex.

Though the bulk of that will be devoted to the industrial side of the operation, plans also call for a 940-square-foot tasting room where patrons can sample the microbrewery’s wares.

“Ultimately, the goal is to be a community gathering place — we’re not necessarily that place where people come to consume a lot,” said Teryle Aguilar, who co-founded Brewing Reserve with her husband, Steve. “It’s more to make sure that people are coming in to taste our beers and that we’re really providing something new and unique in the market.”

Some people, though, questioned whether the chosen ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Town Brewery now open in Whitby
Ontario Beverage Network reports that the province’s newest craft brewery is now open in Whitby.

Town Brewery has been established by general manager Jeff Talmey and brewers Mike Sundell and Tim Ferriman, and is located at 1632 Charles Street near Whitby Harbour.

Featuring a 3500-square-foot brewhouse and a 1500-square-foot retail store and taproom, the brewery is focused on producing “American-style ales and mixed-fermentation farmhouse ales and sours.”

The four brands currently available on tap and in 500 ml bottles include American Blonde Ale (4.8% abv), West Coast IPA (6.6% abv), Saison (6% abv), and Session Pale Ale (4.8% abv).

Brewery news USA, VA: Big Ugly Brewing finally breaking ground on new location
Big Ugly Brewing Company is finally breaking ground on its new location in Chesapeake almost exactly one year after getting city approval for the project, the Virginian-Pilot reported on November 7.

The new brewery should be open by summer and feature a 15-barrel system, which would double its current output. It would also allow Big Ugly to significantly upgrade its tasting room, increasing to 2,500 square feet, up from 1,400 square feet.

The new location will also feature an extensive outdoor space with fire pits, food trucks, Tesla charging stations, and live music. There will be an area for private parties indoors, as well as several classic cars gutted and retrofitted for people to sit in.

Big Ugly’s groundbreaking took unusually long due to disagreements with the city over property taxes, turn lanes and traffic studies. Now, finally, excitement has returned within the Big Ugly camp, but there are still lots of hurdles to clear.

“Hopefully everything works out and we can get into the new building soon,” said co-owner Jim Lantry. “We are ready to start a new chapter.”

Brewery news USA, NY: In-Law Brewing Company to hold its grand opening event on November 11
A new Chase Mills brewery run by two brothers-in-law will offer a dozen different beers during a grand opening event on Saturday, November 11 that also will feature music and the King Taco food truck, the Daily Courier-Observer reported on November 9.

The aptly named In-Law Brewing Company is located at 5868 County Road 14 and is owned and operated by Justin Tredo and Brent Bishop. Mr. Bishop is married to Mr. Tredo’s sister, and the pair began brewing with Mr. Tredo’s father several years ago.

“My dad has always home brewed and we always used to help him out. Brent ended up moving up here a few years ago from Syracuse with my sister, and my dad started home brewing again, so we started home brewing with him,” Mr. Tredo said. “We got to be pretty interested in it so we moved the operation up here to get a little more control over it.”

“We were doing small batches, and it was fun and it was a hobby, but then I was like, ‘This beer is really good and we want to do more,’” Mr. Bishop said. “We needed to take control and do it bigger and more organized.”

Hops news Canada, AB: The Alberta Hop Producers’ Association launching on November 18
A new Alberta commodity group will make its official splash into the ag community later this month, Farms.com reported on November 8.

The Alberta Hop Producers’ Association (AHPA) is holding a launch party on Nov. 18 to celebrate its journey from an Internet search query to an officially recognized organization.

Wade Bendfeld, AHPA president, began searching for information on starting his own hop farm about five years ago and noticed there were others who shared his interest.

“A couple of farms sprouted up and more people expressed interest in (hop production),” he told Farms.com today. “It became clear that we could really benefit from coming together to share our start-up stories. There’s a lot of learning that needs to be shared and we feel that the association is in a unique position to (enable) that.”

AHPA will help members in a variety of ways, including production information and marketing opportunities.

“The association will be able to help (the growers) through their production with tips and information,” Bendfeld said. “By ensuring hop growers have the access to the best production practices, it helps ensure Alberta-grown hops are the highest quality they can be.

“And down the road we’ll be able to develop specific marketing supports.”

Brewery news USA, TN: Naked River Brewing Co. plans to open in Chattanooga in mid to late summer
Chattanooga is due to get another microbrewery.

Naked River Brewing Co. plans to open in mid to late summer in Chattanooga’s Southside neighborhood in an old, brick warehouse that was saved from the wrecking ball by developer John Wise and by the historic preservation group Cornerstones, the Chattanooga Times Free Press reported on November 8.

Wise’s building is across the street from Finley Stadium and next to the First Tennessee Pavilion.

Naked River Brewing Co. has three men in their late 20s as its principals: Jake Raulston, the brewery’s president, Nathan Woods, the head brewer, and David Frank "Trey" Trundle III, head of marketing and assistant brewer.

The beer isn’t a household name in Chattanooga yet.

"Right now, it’s just test batches," Woods said. "We haven’t sold anything, yet."

"We’re starting from the bottom and moving our way up," Raulston said.

Naked River Brewing Co. will be a fully-operational brewpub, Raulston said. It’ll have the capacity to produce 30 kegs of beer a day, he said, at least six beers on tap and a full food menu.

Raulston grew up in Chattanooga and is employed in geology and engineering projects on offshore oil rigs. Woods recently left Ashville Brewing Co. in Ashville, N.C. where he worked as an ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NS: Ol’ Biddy’s Brew House releases its first beers
Atlantic Canada Beer Blog reports that a well-known homebrewer in the Maritimes has released the first beers from his commercial nanobrewery.

Ol’ Biddy’s Brew House has been launched by Keith Forbes and his wife Erin Delaney-Forbes, and is based in the basement of their home in Lower Sackville.

Working on a custom built 120-litre brewing system with two fermenters, Forbes has three core brands that he intends to have available on a regular basis – Funktown APA (“Crisp and clean, hop-forward American Pale Ale”), Disco Inferno Red IPA (“Well balanced, malt-forward, with chocolate and caramel notes and a citrus hop-focused finish”), and Even Gooder Coffee Brown (“A well-balanced complex Brown Ale with a dense coffee aroma and flavor”).

In addition, the brewery will offer a rotating series of one off and seasonal brands, including a Vanilla Bourbon Chocolate Milk Stout, a hoppy wheat ale known as The Orange American Bastard (#Trump), and many others that are mentioned in the ACBB feature.

Ol’ Biddy’s beers are now available on tap at select bars and growler fill stations in the Halifax area. While sales are limited to draught accounts at the moment, Forbes is investigating the possibility of offering growler sales in the future.

Brewery news USA, TX: Uncle Billy’s Brewery and Smokehouse to become a brewstillery
Not long after a new head brewer takes over at Uncle Billy’s Brewery and Smokehouse, the production brewery is making another big change and will become a “brewstillery” making both beer and spirits, austin360 reported on November 8.

Cocktails made with the in-house liquor are slated to join the menu by the holidays. In the meantime, current Uncle Billy’s employee Stephen Wagner is getting the promotion of his dreams and taking charge of the beer program at Uncle Billy’s, which switched from a brewpub license this summer to begin offering its canned beers beyond Texas.

The current head brewer Trevor Nearburg, who has been integral in the past few years by helping to transition Uncle Billy’s into one of Texas’ largest brewpubs before it made the licensing switch in June, is off to the Texas Hill Country. He is about to close on 15 acres of land across from Jester King Brewery and will open Beerburg Beer Werks on that acreage this time next year.

Beerburg — a name based off Nearburg’s own surname — is going to be a sophisticated farm-to-table brewpub with a noted chef, Beth DiBaggio, in the kitchen. She worked at the Peached Tortilla, one of the first ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Coopers Brewery seeing ‘patchy but promising’ start to beer sales in new financial year
Coopers Brewery is seeing a “patchy but promising” start to beer sales in the new financial year, and returning to its malting roots after a 15-year gap will also bring in additional revenues, The Advertiser reported on November 9.

Australia’s largest locally owned brewer said sales in 2017 grew 2.9 per cent to a record 83.8 million litres, helping the SA-based group cap 24 years of consecutive growth in volume.

As with previous years, consumption in SA was on the decline to 19 million litres, from 19.2 million litres in 2016.

Managing director Tim Cooper said the state’s challenging demographics and increasing competition from craft beers were affecting sales.

“Mostly though it’s because SA has an ageing population with stagnant overall growth. Most other states have younger, growing populations,” he said.

NSW was its strongest market with sales up 6.9 per cent.

NSW made up 27 per cent of total sales, followed by SA with 22.9 per cent, Victoria with 18.7 per cent and Queensland with 16.2 per cent.

Profit before tax fell to A$33.4 million, down 3.5 per cent from A$34.6 million in 2015-16, due to writedowns associated with its Mr Beer (USA) business.

Overhead costs associated with the construction of a new A$65 million maltings plant ...More info on site

Brewery news Cameroon: New brewer SABC intends to brew craft beer in Cameroon
New player has announced its entry on Cameroon’s beer market. Société brassicole artisanale camerounaise (Sobrartcam) is the newest competitors to Société anonyme des brasseries du Cameroun (SABC), Diageo, and UCB, Le Bled Parle reported on November 8.

The company, however, intends to operate in a slightly different sector – it will be specializing in the production of craft beers and operate in trading of brewing raw materials, it is reported.

The nation’s beer sector is doing rather well, according to SABC data. Last year Cameroon’s total beer consumption is estimated to have reached 6.5 mln hl, with imports declining by 0.6% versus 2015. SABC is the market leader with a share of 74%, followed by Guinness (15%), and UCB (10%).

Brewery news Ireland: New alcohol law set to double canned beer prices
Ireland is set to double the price of cans of beer after a new minimum pricing law passed its third stage on November 8, the Irish Post reported on November 9.

The new Public Health Alcohol Bill will skyrocket the price of cheaper beer should it pass its fourth and fifth stages in the Seanad.

Cheap wine has also been targeted by the proposed legislation – with a mandatory minimum cost of €7.50 for every bottle of wine firmly on the table.

Specially discounted multi-buys – such as Guinness, Carlsberg and Budweiser – have also been earmarked for a price increase by the Bill.

However following strong lobbying from the drinks industry, the Irish Government dropped plans to force shop owners to stop all alcoholic beverages from being displayed.

Health Minister Simon Harris tweeted on November 8: “After eight hours and 35 mins of debate in Seanad Eireann, the Public Health Alcohol Bill has passed Committee Stage.

“On to the next step now! Lots to do including engaging with retailers.

“Important work – landmark public health measures long overdue.”

Mr Harris was speaking after he told the Seanad that “harm” to the Irish people will “go down” if the price of cheap alcohol increases.

He added: “We hear that ...More info on site

Brewery news Cyprus: October beer sales decline due to fall in exports
New figures show that beer sales in Cyprus have dropped recently.

Local brewery sales fell by 16,193 litres in October compared to the same month last year, the Famagusta Gazette reported on November 10 citing the Cyprus News Agency.

The decrease is due to a fall in beer exports and to a drop in local consumption on a monthly basis.

Beer is a favourite tipple in Cyprus, with Keo and Leon being favourites.

Statistical Service of Cyprus figures show that beer sales this October stood at 3,022,374 litres, against 3,038,567 in October 2016 and 4,211,159 in September.

Local consumption in October rose to 2,929,964 litres, from 2,919,006 in the same month of 2016, while on a monthly basis it decreased from 4,201,498 in September.

Beer exports in October fell to 92,410 litres, from 119,561 last year, while compared to September they recorded a big increase of 82,749 litres.

Brewery news Lebanon: Craft beer making headway in Lebanon market
For decades, beer in Lebanon has meant just one thing: the ubiquitous local pilsner, Almaza. But now a crop of local microbrews is making headway in the home market, the Yahoo Singapore News reported on November 10.

On the shore of the seaside town of Batroun, 34-year-old Jamil Haddad presides over the Colonel brewery, now just over three years old and, he says, expanding fast.

"Every year I'm growing like crazy," he told AFP, as workers put the finishing touches to a stage in the brewery's garden for its annual festival.

This year alone, thanks in part to his new beach bar a few hundred metres from the brewery, business is up 45 percent, he said.

"When I opened in 2014, I was afraid. Are people going to be okay with this concept? It's new, it's not traditional, it's different," Haddad said.

Initially he set his sights low, producing just a single lager, aiming for a product that would be accessible for beer drinkers used to the crisp but one-note taste of Almaza (diamond in Arabic).
