LOOKING FOR THE WHOLE RANGE OF BITTER ACIDS?

ABSTRACT
The common bitter acids in beer are usually analysed using different HPLC industry methods. In case you are in the possession of an underused LC-Q-ToF-MS why not try a HRMS (High Resolution Mass Spectometry) method? HRMS is a promising technique that enables outstanding performance in substance identification. With this method the similtanious quantification of 33 bitter acids (from the different iso-alpha acids to humulinones and xanthohumol, etc.) is possible with an easy sample preparation and a short analysis run time. Interested?

Brewery news USA, NC & SC: Catawba Brewing Co. acquiring Charleston-based Palmetto Brewing Co.
South Carolina's oldest craft brewery has decided that two heads are better than one in announcing its sale to a North Carolina beer maker, the Charleston Post Courier reported on November 13.

Catawba Brewing Co. said on November 13 it is acquiring Charleston-based Palmetto Brewing Co. in a deal that's expect to be finalized by the end of the year. Financial terms were not disclosed.

“The opportunity for combined growth and shared resources will put both brands in a more competitive position to compete in the rapidly changing craft market," Palmetto owner Larry Lipov said. “And it is very satisfying to know today’s Palmetto and Catawba team members will work together to grow the brands.”

Catawba Brewing is heaquartered in Morganton, N.C., and operates several tasting rooms throughout its home state. It is owned by the Pyatt family.

“Upon finalization, we will immediately implement a $1 million capital investment plan for Morganton and Charleston," Catawba co-founder Billy Pyatt said in a written statement. "That includes facility upgrades, equipment purchases and, of course, personnel to support our proven hybrid retail/wholesale business model.”

He also cited "key differences" that could become competitive advantages as the two breweries combine operations.

“Catawba has one of the most ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Buffalo Bayou Brewing Co. preparing to break ground on new $14 mln brewery
Buffalo Bayou Brewing Co., which launched nearly six years ago with a beer called 1836 honoring the date of Houston's founding, is preparing to break ground on a $14 million brewery and restaurant that would be one of the largest and most visible of its kind in the city, the Houston Chronicle reported on November 13.

The announcement marks another milestone for the industry, as breweries continue to pop up and civic boosters market them more heavily.

The three-story, 28,000-square-foot Buffalo Bayou Brewing facility is planned for Sawyer Yards, an artist studio-anchored development just south of Interstate 10 near downtown, the Woodland Heights and other bustling neighborhoods. The brewery would boost production capacity significantly and take fuller advantage of state laws that allow it to sell some beer on-site.

Founder Rassul Zarinfar said his business outgrew its original location, a converted warehouse near Memorial Park that is expected to ship about 8,000 barrels this year. The new facility, 3 miles away and expected to open in 2018, will provide immediate relief and could be expanded over time to a 50,000-barrel capacity.

The company has begun the permitting process and expects construction to take nine months.

The new site will include a taproom and 200-seat restaurant ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Tucker Brewing to become Tucker’s first brewery
Ryan Chapman, a young entrepreneur and native of Sandy Springs, Georgia, is working to open Tucker Brewing Company in the spring of 2018. Situated at 2003 South Bibb Dr., a Find a Craft Breweryshort drive down the street from Main Street, Tucker, the old warehouse is being transformed to feature a brand-new production brewery, Tasting Room, and the largest Beer Garden in Georgia with 6,500 square feet of space, CraftBeer.com reported on November 13.

Founder, Ryan Chapman, is no stranger to business, having worked to grow the family’s building products company started by his father 19 years ago, and is excited to get into the beer industry.

“I guess you could say I got an early start in the brewing game,” says Ryan. “After living in Germany as an exchange student during high school, my dad and I started attending local brew club meetings and brewing beer in our basement.” He decided to start Tucker Brewing to join his passions for beer and German culture, having also returned to Germany to study abroad during college.

The brewery plans to start production with a German Pilsner, Hefeweizen, and Red Lager keeping in line with their slogan of, “German-style beers, Southern roots.”

Brewery news USA, IN: 18th Street Brewery bringing brewing back to Gary’s Miller neighborhood
18th Street Brewery moved its main brewing operations from its original location in Gary's Miller neighborhood to Hammond last year, which not all Miller residents were thrilled about.

Drew Fox's acclaimed craft brewery, which the Chicago Tribune dubbed "Northwest Indiana's second most famous brewery," left the original Miller location at 5725 Miller Ave. open as a brewpub, rebranding it as 18th Street Brewery Tap Room and Craft Cocktails. But now 18th Street Brewery is bringing back brewing to Gary, nwitimes.com reported on November 16.

The craft brewery's main production will remain in a former warehouse at 5417 Oakley Ave. in downtown Hammond, but it will start brewing beers experimentally in Miller.

"18th Street Brewery's Gary Taproom is proud to announce that we will be returning the word ‘brewery’ to our original location in Miller Beach," the brewery said in a statement. "Starting next week, we will have a small open fermentation 10-barrel system setup to further challenge ourselves by experimenting in rustic styles with new technologies. This decision came not only from the request of the community but from our desire and commitment to produce innovative small batch craft beer where it all began in Miller Beach."

Brewery news USA, CA: Golden Road Brewing gets approval to open brew pub and beer garden in Oakland
The City of Oakland has approved Golden Road Brewing's proposal to open a brew pub and beer garden in the Temescal neighborhood, a Golden Road spokesperson confirmed.

Earlier this year the brewery announced plans to open a nearly 9,000 square-foot space with seven shipping containers, multiple fire pits and an onsite nanobrewery at 320, 322 and 330 40th Street, SFGATE reported on November 15.

Concerns over noise and increased traffic forced the company to significantly revise their plans. Golden Road then cut their proposed space by more than half, from 8,606 square-feet to around 4,000 square-feet.

The approved plans now include a brew pub with 1,613 square-feet of floor area with the rest of the area to be used as a beer garden. A spokesperson says Golden Road has not yet confirmed a date to begin construction.

Golden Road co-founder Meg Gill, who at one time worked for Speakeasy in San Francisco, told SFGATE in March that she was looking forward to making a return to the Bay Area.

"(Oakland) has embraced our concept of the Golden Road Flipflop pub (a nano-brewery in a container), and there is also a relaxed, yet active, community there that was a fit for us," Gill said in the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MS: St. Martin’s Crooked Letter Brewery to resume production
The owner of Crooked Letter Brewery plans to resume production in January after a year-long hiatus, WLOX reported on November 14.

The popular brewery's new location is on Rose Farm Drive in St. Martin.

Founder and CEO of Crooked Letter Brewery, Paul Blacksmith, says the hiatus was in the first step in reorganizing the business. The expansion is designed to reflect a new tap room law that will allow customers to enjoy Crooked Letter beers on site, according to Blacksmith.

“Even though our brands have been out of production for 10 months, our distributor tell me our brands have been top of mind for many people. We have a great following with a very supportive and loyal fan base,” Blacksmith said.

Since suspending production at the Ocean Springs location, many surprised customers reported the business permanently closed to Google.

Blacksmith mentioned a tedious process working with the internet search and mapping engine to get Crooked Letter back on the Google Maps.

Currently, Blacksmith and his team are busy moving equipment from the company’s original location on Government St. in Ocean Springs.

State and federal permits have been updated for the new location, which will also offer a full-service restaurant with ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SC: Columbia Craft Brewing Company announces opening date
Columbia Craft Brewing Company, the latest microbrewery to be located in the Vista/River District area announced its opening date, The State reported on November 15.

The brewery and tasting room at 520 Greene Street will open its doors on November 30. Head brewer Shaun Piggott has been busy. On tap, you should expect flagship brews Famously Hop (IPA), Columbia Craft Lager, Pulaski Porter and Columbia Craft Red Ale and rotating taps of Hop To Trot, Citrus All Pro and Sour Line Up.

Richard Strauss, a retired CPA, and his sons Andrew and Justin have created a 15-barrel brew house that should produce about 1,500 barrels of beer a year. Guided tours of the facility will be offered and there will be a dog-friendly beer garden on the premises.

Columbia Craft Brewing Company joins River Rat Brewery, Conquest Brewing, Swamp Cabbage Brewing, Hunter-Gatherer Brewy & Alehouse and Twisted Spur Brewing in Columbia’s growing microbrewery scene.

Brewery news USA, ID: Spring Creek Brewing Company breaks ground in Boise
Things are starting to roll at Spring Creek Brewing Company, the Idaho Statesman reported on November 14.

The brewery and pizzeria on Idaho 55 broke ground earlier this month with initial dirt work on the site.

Spring Creek Brewing co-founder Marc Grubert says the aim is to open in May of 2018, if all goes according to plan.

“We hope to be pouring concrete by early spring if the weather cooperates,” he says.

Located a few minutes north of Eagle at 18651 N. Streams Edge Way, Spring Creek will serve the Avimor community.

It joins Boise Brewing as one of Idaho’s only community-funded breweries. In March, Spring Creek announced that it was seeking investors — “to allow our friends, neighbors and regular people to invest, and so that we can meet our total startup cost needs,” Grubert and co-founder Jeff Badigian explained in a news release. The minimum investment is $1,000.

Spring Creek is the latest in a steady wave of breweries popping up in the Treasure Valley. In 2017, three new breweries joined the bustling Boise scene: White Dog, Clairvoyant and Lost Grove. Unlike Spring Creek, none of those includes a restaurant.

Positioning itself as a “destination neighborhood brewpub,” Spring Creek will target nearby residents ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Pretoria Fields starts brewing in downtown Albany
Anticipation is growing around Albany's new craft brewery in downtown. And, there are many signs that an opening date might just be around the corner, WALB-TV reported on November 15.

Although nothing official has been announced, one clue about a possible launch date can be found in the beer the brewmaster is making right now.

Pretoria Fields’ brewmaster Eric Kirchner said that the team brewed its first beer on November 14.

"We brewed all night," said Kirchner.

And, with little sleep, Kirchner was in full motion on November 15.

"There are so many moving parts in a brewery, as you are building it you test what you can and you can't really test it until you put it all together," said Kirchner.

But, finally with the machinery together, tested and now making beer, the pressure is on to open a brewery to the public.

With an exclusive first look at the tasting room, there are new and reclaimed woods mixed in with exposed brick and wood bars.

Outside, is a bright and sunny beer garden area, with fresh sod.

But, back inside is where people will be able to gather, sip a fresh beer and view the brewing process.

"It is a great learning process. In fact, it is funny, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Copper Creek Brewing Co closing its doors
Copper Creek Brewing Co., downtown Athens' only microbrewery, is closing its doors, the Red and Black reported on November 14.

Miranda Ruddle, the bartender at Copper Creek Brewing Co. said the business will be closing its door on Saturday, the day of the Georgia vs. Kentucky home football game.

"Nov. 18, the Kentucky game day will be our last day," Ruddle said, who has worked there for the last three years.

Ruddle said the she didn't know the reason Copper Creek was closing but that she was sad about it.

"I'm sad, I've been here for three years. I love this place, it's my home and I'm really sad about it," Ruddle said.

Ruddle hopes people show up to their last day.

"We kinda just announced that we will be closing on game day, so hopefully everybody will come out and support our last day," she said.

Brewery news UK & India: Diageo sues Vijay Mallya to recover $40 mln payment
Weeks before a London extradition hearing, Indian tycoon Vijay Mallya faces a second legal battle after Diageo Plc sued to recover a $40 million payment made when he was ousted from United Spirits Ltd. last year, Bloomberg reported on November 17.

Diageo filed the suit in London on November 14 after setting out the grievances in its annual report in August. The drinks giant claims Mallya breached a $75 million agreement, of which it had already paid out $40 million, made when he stepped down as chairman of United Spirits in February 2016. It’s also seeking about $141 million over questionable payments made by companies affiliated with Mallya. His son, Sidhartha, is also named in the suit.

Diageo has amassed a 55 percent stake in United Spirits since it first purchased a share of the Indian whiskey producer in 2013. It battled for months to oust Mallya as chairman after an internal inquiry alleged he’d diverted funds to other companies under his control. Last year, the British distiller agreed to pay Mallya $75 million over five years to leave the company and not compete or interfere with it for five years. As part of the arrangement, Diageo also said it would release ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Beer in cans now makes up a quarter of craft beers sold in off licences and multiple grocers
Gone are the days of stigma around ‘tinnies,’ as a quarter of the UK’s craft beer is now sold in cans, according to new figures, The Drinks Business reported on November 17.

The latest figures from consumer research firm Nielsen show that cans now make up a quarter of craft beers sold in the UK in off licenses and multiple grocers, increasing by 327% from January – August in 2017.

Part of this rise in popularity can be attributed to consumers’ changing attitudes, according to Nielsen.

Consumers, particularly millennials, are increasingly looking for lightweight packaging that with standout designs which is easily recyclable.

Metal is a permanently available material that can be recycled again and again, without losing any of its structural integrity.

Martin Constable, chairman of industry trade body Can Makers, said the canned craft beer market’s growth has “exceeded expectations and has paved the way for other craft drinks’ makers to enter the market.”

He added that the trend is not exclusive to craft beer, and many drinks makers worldwide are choosing to store wine and pre-made cocktails in aluminium cans over glass bottles.

“Craft brewers have understood that choosing the can is the best packaging option for retaining the product’s quality and authenticity,” he ...More info on site

Brewery news India: SEBI orders attachment of United Breweries (Holdings) bank accounts
Markets regulator SEBI has ordered the attachment of bank accounts as well as share and mutual fund holdings of defaulter businessman Vijay Mallya-led United Breweries (Holdings) Ltd to recover dues totalling Rs. 18.5 lakh, the Hindu Business Line reported on November 16.

The decision was taken after UBHL failed to pay the fine imposed on it. In 2015, SEBI had levied a fine of Rs. 15 lakh on the company for disclosure lapses regarding creation and invocation of certain pledge transactions in shares of United Spirits.

The pending dues - totalling Rs. 18.5 lakh - include the initial fine of Rs. 15 lakh and interest of Rs. 3.5 lakh and a recovery cost of Rs. 1,000.

In an attachment notice dated November 13, SEBI asked banks, depositories and mutual funds not to allow any debit from the accounts of UBHL. However, credits have been permitted.

Further, SEBI has directed the banks to attach all accounts, including lockers, held by the defaulter.

“There is sufficient reason to believe that the defaulter may dispose of the amounts in the bank accounts and securities in the demat accounts held with your bank, depository, mutual fund, and realisation of amount due under the certificate would in consequence be delayed ...More info on site

Brewery news Zimbabwe: Delta Corporation to remodel sorghum beer factories
Beverages maker Delta Corporation will remodel its sorghum beer factories to enhance production of the new 1.5 litre pack, as it moves to boost both volume and revenue contribution for the segment. The 1.5 litre pack, which is expected to flood the market by year end, is replacing the 2 litre pack, also known as a scud. Management at Delta says the new 1.5 litre is expected to drive volumes for the sorghum beer segment, which experienced a volumes contraction in the half year to September 30, 2017, The Herald reported on November 16.

“The 1.5 litre is doing very well; it is only capacity that is still a challenge,” said Delta chief executive officer Pearson Gowero in an interview on the sidelines of the group’s financial results presentation.

“We now have to re-kit all our factories to produce the pack (1.5 litre) from the 2 litre, but due to the hard currency delays, there is a bit of a delay. We think before the end of this year it will be everywhere,” said Gowero.

This comes as the sorghum beer volumes fell 4 percent in the period to September 30, 2017 to 1 826 million hectolitres compared to 1 903 million ...More info on site

Brewery news India: United Spirits claims recovery of Rs1,800 crore from United Breweries
In an arbitration case fought between Diageo PLC owned United Spirits (USL) and United Breweries Holdings (UBHL), the former had claimed a recovery of around Rs 1,800 crore including interest from Vijay Mallya’s holding company after it defaulted between 2010 and 2013, two people with direct knowledge of the development said.

The ongoing arbitration in Bengaluru, which was to be concluded in few months, has now been extended by six months. The two companies went for arbitration as loan agreement said a default of the loan can be settled through an arbitration. USL has loaned around Rs 1,350 crore to various companies of Mallya which was primarily used to fund the defunct Kingfisher Airline.

USL, which sells Diageo’s brands such as Black Dog and Smirnoff in India, had loaned to various UB group companies and all these loans had been consolidated under UB Holdings which has been acknowledged by the holding company.

Mallya is the chairman and chief executive of UBHL.

Heineken NV and Brazilian distributors for Coca-Cola Co will begin arbitration in February regarding a distribution contract that the Dutch brewer decided to end this year, according to a November 17th’s report by newspaper Valor Economico.

Heineken broke off the contract after acquiring the Brazilian operations of Japan’s Kirin Holdings Co Ltd for 1.025 billion euros ($1.21 billion), bolstering its own distribution network in the country.

According to another report by newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo, Heineken suggested the Coke distributors keep their contract for two beer brands, Bavaria and Kaiser, until 2022, but an association of distributors rejected the proposal.

A press representative for Heineken did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A representative for the Coke distributors declined to comment immediately on the matter, citing the confidentiality of the ongoing dispute.

Brewery news Kenya: Heineken launches Amstel in Kenya
Global beverage giant Heineken has introduced a smooth-crispy beer into the Kenyan market, seeking to tap into the changing consumer taste, the Daily Nation reported on November 16.

The Dutch Brewer on November 15 launched the Amstel, its third alcoholic product in the Kenyan market since it started its operation in the country in 2011.

Amstel, with an alcoholic content of 5 per cent, will be available in 330ml bottle and 500 ml can, retailing at select outlets across the country at Sh160 and Sh180 respectively.

“The decision to introduce Amstel into the Kenyan market is informed by our research that shows our target consumer enjoys a classier lifestyle in their everyday pursuit of attainable luxuries.

“This provided a great opportunity for us to expand our portfolio of products, thus we brought in Amstel to meet this demand,” said Heineken East Africa general manager Uche Unigwe.

Mr Unigwe has been Heineken’s general manager for the last three years. He took over from Koen Morchuis who helped the company to set up its Nairobi headquarters in 2012.

“We want consumers to question their relationship with their current domestic beer and we are confident they will ‘succumb to the aaah taste’ once they’ve experienced Amstel,” he added.

Brewery news Turkey: High alcohol prices and heavy taxes driving many to home-brew
Carefully testing the temperature of a bucket of fermenting beer, Onder Ceyhan pushes back the foam to add a touch of yeast to his latest batch of home-brewed drink.

Ceyhan says he, like many others in Turkey, has been driven to brewing his own beer by the high price of commercially produced alcoholic drinks and the hefty taxes imposed by Turkey’s ruling Islamist-rooted AK Party, Reuters reported on November 17.

“I might never have started this if beer wasn’t so expensive,” the 25-year old university student said.

Under President Tayyip Erdogan, a pious Muslim known for his dislike of alcohol, taxes on booze have increased steadily and now account for two thirds of the cost of some alcoholic drinks.

From early 2003, when Erdogan came to power, to October 2017, prices of raki - a traditional aniseed-flavored spirit - have jumped by 665 percent and beer prices by 580 percent, according to data from the Turkish Statistics Institute (TUIK).

“What surprised me when I got into this was the cost. If I can make it this cheaply, it’s strange that commercial beers are so expensive,” said Ceyhan.

He makes beer from an online kit, while others brew cider, lagers and wine. Some also dilute shop-bought ethanol ...More info on site
