HOPS - MIGHT AS WELL TELL ME YOUR NAME, AS I WILL FIND IT OUT ANYWAY!

ABSTRACT
Finding an easy analysis to identify a hop variety or even the growing region has proven to be challenging up to now. A U.S. research team is currently developing a GCSulfur- Chemiluminescence method in combination with a Gertl Twister(TM) for sample preparation to determine the hop variety and also the growing region. After establishing a data library, the variety matching was proven to work. For the regional matching, the proof of concept is viable but further work needs to be carried out.

Brewery news Canada: Molson Coors confirms intention to build its new brewery in Longueil, Quebec
Molson Coors wants to build its new brewery in Longueuil, the company announced on November 28.

The City of Longueuil must approve the agreement, but the site, which is near the Saint-Hubert airport, has been in the company's crosshairs for more than two years.

If all goes according to plan, crews will break ground on the facility next year and the brewery will be up and running by 2021. The company previously said the project could cost "hundreds of millions of dollars."

"Today's decision to move forward will enable us to stay competitive in an evolving market, we are ready to move forward with this vision," Frederic Landtmeters, president and chief executive officer of Molson Coors Canada, said in a statement.

In July, the company announced it would be building a new brewery instead of modernizing its current building, which is not far from the St. Lawrence River on Notre-Dame Street in Montreal.

It has been brewing beer there for the last 231 years.

The new site is about 10 kilometres away from the brewery's current site. The size of the land, proximity to Highways 20 and 30, and a regulation that allows for tax breaks over five years to develop the area near the airport ...More info on site

Brewery news Spain & USA: Spanish Mahou San Miguel acquires minority stake in US craft brewer Avery Brewing
Avery Brewing, which has been one of Colorado's most unconventional beer makers for the past 25 years, has sold a minority stake of its business to Spanish brewing conglomerate Mahou San Miguel. The billion-dollar company also owns a 30 percent stake in Michigan's Founders Brewing, which it bought into in 2014, Westword reported on November 28.

"At this time, we cannot disclose the financial details of the agreement, but I want to reiterate that it is a minority investment, and Adam Avery and Larry Avery will still continue to lead our brewery," brewery spokeswoman Vanessa Cory said in a statement, adding that Mahou San Miguel is also a family-owned company.

The deal isn't a surprise. Avery spent $30 million on a state-of-the-art brewing campus and restaurant, which it opened in 2015, just as sales for many medium-sized and large breweries began to slip in the face of increasing competition. Avery has also streamlined its portfolio over the past two years, jettisoning many of the unusual seasonal releases it had used to build its reputation in favor of more marketable year-round offerings.

“Dad and I decided two years ago that in order to fulfil our vision of the new brewery and all of Avery ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Two brothers launching K2 Brothers Brewing in Penfield on December 2
Brothers Kyle and Brad Kennedy are the first to admit how different they are.

Kyle, a state corrections officer, looks like he just wrapped up an NFL career. Brad, a software engineer, looks like the analytics geek in the NFL front office.

But two things bond them: Beer and family. Together, the Kennedys will open K2 Brothers Brewing, 1221 Empire Blvd., Penfield, Rochester's second craft brewery, at noon Saturday, Dec. 2, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reports.

“You can trust family,” Kyle said. “That’s the best thing about a family business. No matter, what at the end of the day you’re still family.”

"We complement each other. We're complete opposites," Brad added. "We always joked different milkmen. We don't look anything alike, complete different personalities. It's like the right and left side of the brain."

Kyle is more of a talker, able to connect with people quickly. He's more of a doer. Brad is good with troubleshooting and the business side. "He's practical and loaded with common sense," Kyle said. "That's where the two of us complement each other."

The Kennedys are also getting support and expertise from their parents, Dick and Lori. Dick, a retired general contractor, has assisted in much of the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Three Notch'd Brewing Company opens sour beer brewery in Charlottesville
The Virginia beer scene is continuing to grow.

Three Notch'd Brewing Company opened Central Virginia's first sour house on Friday, November 24, in Charlottesville, WHSV reported.

There are few breweries in the country that specialize in sour beer.

"We're one of the few places in the state and even in the country that has a designated facility to play with these microorganisms," said Head Brewer Brian Martin.

At the original Grady Street location, the sour house is kicking off with 11 new beers.

The beer is aged in wine barrels. Depending on the style and what happens in the wood these barrels will take anywhere from three months to three years to mature.

"You don't find that often, outside one small region in Belgium," said Martin.

Brewery news USA, OH: The Laird Arcade Brewery to become Tiffin’s first brewery in 80-100 years
Owners of the first brewery to operate in Tiffin in 80-100 years are making final preparations to open its doors downtown, the Tiffin Advertiser Tribune reported on November 25.

The Advertiser-Tribune Editor Rob Weaver and his partners Eric Kuebler and Andy Flechtner plan to open The Laird Arcade Brewery at 114 S. Washington St., suite D.

Kuebler said it could be open before the end of the year or early next year.

“(We should be open in) two months, tops,” he said.

The city of Tiffin approved the nanobrewery earlier this year, but Kuebler said the three still have state and federal regulations to meet before they can open.

Weaver said the brewery will use a 3.5-barrel brewing system.

When the brewery does open, Kuebler said six beers will be offered at all times while six other taps will be rotated between seasonal and experimental brews. Most of the business will be done in the brewery’s taproom, but the beers likely will be distributed to other local businesses as well. Customers also can purchase growlers — jugs used to transport draft beer — or crowlers — a metal container used to transport smaller quantities of beer — for to-go convenience.

Kuebler said he and Weaver, who have ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Riverhead Town Board seeks to become Riverhead’s newest brewery
North Fork Brewing Company’s special permit application to build a brewery and tasting room in part of the former Riverhead Fire Department headquarters on Second Street faced no opposition — and generated no public comment — during a public hearing before the Riverhead Town Board last week, the Riverhead News-Review reported on November 28.

The company, headed by cousins Peter Barraud of Baiting Hollow and Ian Van Bourgondien of Southold, must obtain a special permit approval from the Town Board in order to proceed.

North Fork Brewing Company seeks to become one of two breweries in the former firehouse building; Long Beard Brewing Company also has town approval to build a brewery on the east side of the building. North Fork Brewing plans to build on the west side.

Craig Waltz of Long Beard said they are awaiting their license from New York State before they can open.

North Fork Brewing Company’s proposal includes a tasting room and retail space, and plans to use hops grown on their hops farm in Peconic, according to Mr. Barraud.

“Our goal has always been to be — and we are — fully licensed as a farm brewery and to continue to follow the guidelines of New York State ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NB: Shiretown Beer announces impending closure
A New Brunswick brewery that already closed and returned once has announced that it will be closing again, Canadian Beer News reported on November 23.

As reported by Maritime Beer Report, the impending closure of Shiretown Beer was announced by owner Derek Leslie on Facebook last week.

Shiretown was launched in 2011 as a nanobrewery located in Dalhousie’s Artisan Cafe, and relocated to Charlo in 2013 following the closure of Artisan. The brewery was shuttered in the summer of 2015, but reopened almost a year later.

According to the announcement, the brewery and shop will remain open until the end of November to sell as much stock as possible before the closure.

Brewery news Kenya: Construction of Kisumu Brewery progressing on schedule
Construction plans for the Kshs15 billion Kisumu Brewery the ground-breaking of which was presided over by President Uhuru Kenyatta in August are progressing on schedule with production set to commence next year, the Capital FM Kenya reported on November 27.

Kenya Breweries Limited Managing Director Jane Karuku said the new plant will provide an expanded market opportunity mainly for sorghum farmers in Nyanza. The plant, she said, will be heavily reliant on sorghum among other raw materials sourced from locals.

During current development phase, Kisumu County has enjoyed construction material and labour force supply benefits as part of the company’s local sourcing commitments. To spur the local economy, the construction material and majority of the labour force at the construction site are exclusively sourced from Kisumu County.

“We have made a lot of progress at the new brewery site since July and we are delighted at the progress. We look forward to completing the construction works on schedule,” said Ms. Karuku.

In July, President Kenyatta and Diageo Global Chief Executive Ivan Menezes commissioned the development of an ultra-modern brewery in Kisumu.

The brewery plant is the single largest such project in Nyanza region and Kenya in decades and is set to be an engine of ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: London’s Brixton Brewery partners with Heineken UK
London’s Brixton Brewery has partnered with Heineken UK in a move that will see it increase capacity almost tenfold. Heineken will acquire an undisclosed minority stake in the business for an undisclosed sum. Following the investment, Brixton will move from its existing 3,500-hl (3,000-BBL) site on Brixton Station Road to a new 15,000-square-foot space on Milkwood Road, less than a half mile away, Good Beer Hunting reported on November 28.

Local couples Jez and Libby Galaun and Mike Ross and Xochitl Benjamin founded the brewery in Brixton, South London, in 2013. The new site, which is expected to be operational by April 2018, is expected to produce approximately 30,000 hl (21,300 BBLs) of beer annually.

As reported recently by GBH, London’s brewing industry is continuing to experience a strong growth curve. This has made it an increasingly tempting market for the industry's biggest players. Recently SABMiller and, subsequently, Asahi acquired Meantime Brewing. ZX Ventures, the venture capital arm of AB InBev, purchased Camden Town Brewery in December 2015. And earlier this year, Carlsberg, in partnership with Brooklyn Brewery, acquired London Fields Brewery in a deal reportedly worth £4 million ($5.3 mln).

Heineken’s move is far more cautious, however, having only bought a minority ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia & China: Australian beer maker Broo signs China distribution deal
Shares in Aussie beer maker Broo have soared to their highest in a year on the back of a Chinese distribution deal, The Sydney Morning Herald reported on November 27.

Broo shares jumped more than 30 per cent on November 27 after the Victorian brewer said Jihua had agreed to pay for 1.5 billion litres of Broo Premium Lager over the next seven years.

Broo forecasts A$120 million in revenue from the deal but won't start to receive the cash until 2020.

Nonetheless, its shares were up 30.5 per cent at 38.5 cents by 1410 AEDT.

With Jihua set to market and distribute to supermarkets, retail chains and the hospitality industry, Broo founder and chief executive Kent Grogan said his beer was set to become a major brand in China over the coming years.

"I am delighted to have reached agreement with such a high-calibre Chinese distribution partner," Mr Grogan said.

Broo's Mildura brewery has been operating at full capacity since early October.

The brewery will focus on production of kegs and bottle products of Broo Premium Lager, Australia Draught, Kakadu and Mildura Brewery brands.
