THE BITTER, TWISTED TRUTH OF THE HOP: 50 YEARS OF HOP CHEMISTRY

ABSTRACT
Two very well known authors, Patrick Ting and David Ryder, guide us through a history of hop chemistry. They reveal the "bitter, twisted truth of the hop", detailing the discovery of hop acids and their transformation to the many innovations that led to the development of advanced hop products essential to the success of many new and novel beer brands of consistent quality. Miller Brewing has played an important role in these achievements, and although today's zeitgeist goes in the direction of using minimally processed foods and spices, it is clear that, thanks to advanced technologies the brewing production process, we are in the position to create more possibilities for consistency, efficiency, and flexibility in terms of bittering and foam quality.

Brewery news USA: The Brewers Association looks back on defining craft beer moments of 2017
Strong brewery growth, increased beer tourism and the launch of the independent craft brewer seal—with more than 2,700 craft brewers signed on—were all part of a watershed year for craft beer in 2017. The Brewers Association (BA)—the not-for-profit trade association dedicated to small and independent American brewers—looks back on the defining beer moments of the year. “Craft brewers continue to thrive, if at a slower pace, fueled by a passionate community dedicated to bringing innovation, jobs and beer across America—on Main Street and beyond,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association. “Today, 83 percent of the population lives within 10 miles of a local brewery, meaning that the positive impact of breweries is being felt in communities all over the country.” Of note in 2017: 6,000 breweries were in operation during 2017—with 98 percent of them small and independent craft brewers. The BA’s Economic Impact Report, a biennial analysis featuring economic data of craft brewing for all 50 states and the District of Columbia, showed that craft brewers contributed $67.8 billion to the U.S. economy in 2016, a 21.7 percent increase from 2014. Craft brewers were responsible for more than 456,373 full-time equivalent jobs, a 7.5 percent increase from 2014, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CT: Athletic Brewing Co. to focus on production of craft non-alcoholic beer
Greenwich resident Bill Shufelt has had it with the stigma against nonalcoholic beer.

Shufelt along with his partner and head brewer John Walker will be branching into new territory in Connecticut’s craft beer market as they will be opening Athletic Brewing Co., a brewery and tap room fully devoted to the production of craft non-alcoholic beer at 350 Long Beach Blvd., CT Post reported on December 8.

Brewers have come a long way in replacing the bad-tasting selections of nonalcoholic beer that occupied shelves for decades, Shufelt said.

“There’s an incredible world of craft beer out there with all sorts of variety and options, but the way the world is trending with people being healthy and active, or wanting a clear head for any number of reasons, there’s really nothing out there for (people who want) social drinks that are healthy and made from high-quality ingredients.” Shufelt said.

Shufelt gave up drinking four years ago after he said alcohol was not conducive to his career or passion for health and wellness.

After a 12-year career in finance at Point72 Asset Management in Stamford, Shufelt said he began looking into the craft beer industry and noticed a lack of options for people who enjoy the experience ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Migration Brewing launching brewery and brewpub in Gresham
Portland's Migration Brewing plans to open a new, large production brewery and brewpub in Gresham at 18188 N.E. Wilkes Road just south of Interstate 84, the Pamplin Media Group reported on December 10.

Migration has signed a long-term lease at an industrial park east of 181st Avenue that will accommodate a 20,000-square-foot facility including a brewing system from Practical Fusion Fabricators alongside a 3,000 square foot brewpub, according to the BrewPublic.com website. Migration plans to open the new location by summer 2018.

The 7-year-old brewery, based at 2828 N.E. Glisan St. in Portland, announced its intentions to expand as it signed a distribution agreement with Portland's Columbia River Brewing Company.

"We are excited to become a vibrant part of the Gresham community while greatly expanding our product's reach through packaging and draft sales," said Mike Branes, Migration's head Brewer and co-owner in a statement. "We look forward to working with our distribution partner Columbia to provide consumers throughout Oregon, and Washington with more of Migration's award wining beers."

Migration plans to expand its beer program to include lagers, extensive barrel aging and a steady stream of the company's most popular distribution beers, Straight Outta Portland IPA, and Patio Pale Ale, BrewPublic.com said, and operate ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Smartmouth Brewing Company to open new location on December 16
A Norfolk, VA-based craft brewery will open the doors to its newest location at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront this weekend, the Southside Daily reported on December 11.

Smartmouth Brewing Company’s newest venture, Pilot House, will officially open on Saturday, December 16 at 313 32nd Street.

The 10-barrel brewing system is located inside of a renovated, 1958-era U.S. Post Office, complete with an 8,000-square-foot tasting room and private event space, according to a Virginia Beach news release.

Pilot House will brew between 600 and 800 barrels of craft beer each year. The new location will feature old favorites already brewed at the Norfolk location, such as the Alter Ego Saison and Murphy’s Law Amber Ale.

Those looking to experiment can try Pilot House original brews like Crooked Cane Candy Cane Stout, First! IPA, and Rubidus Nox cherry stout, the release states.

“Pilot House is a tribute to the local waterfront and aviation community as well as the location’s core function of producing experimental and creative beers,” company president Porter Hardy wrote in a news release.

Announced in December 2016, the Virginia Beach Development Authority gave the brewery a $20,000 economic development investment program grant to help fund construction.

“The Virginia Beach craft beer community is growing significantly,” Business ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Alexandria Brewing planning to open in Alexandria in March 2018
A new craft beer brewery and tasting room will begin pouring in southern Campbell County in March 2018, cincinnatti.com reported on December 11.

Iraq War veteran Andy Reyolds and his business partner Brad Martin will have 16 beers on tap when they open Alexandria Brewing at 7926 U.S. 27, Alexandria.

A pinball machine and retro arcade games will pair with craft beer and barbecue-style cuisine inside the tasting room. Alexandria Brewing is renovating 7,900 square feet in the Jolly Towne Centre shops.

A second-floor mezzanine will be for private parties, Reynolds said. An outdoor beer garden area will be built.

"We're set up to have 16 taps, and 10 of them will be our beers at any given time," he said.

Signature Alexandria Brewing offerings will include a Belgian style wit, a Belgian Trappist-style tripel, a Trappist-style quad and a Berlinerweiss. A couple of India Pale Ale varieties will usually be on tap too, Reynolds said.

Reynolds' homage to his U.S. Army service will typically be served once a year as one of six rotating seasonal releases.

“Brothers In Arms,” a Russian imperial stout, was initially brewed six years ago with seven of Reynolds’ U.S. Army buddies in Southgate, Kentucky. Reynolds served in Iraq in 2006 and ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Bad Dog Brewing opens its doors in Sooke
Bring Your Porter to the Slaughter reports that the community of Sooke on the southern shore of Vancouver Island is now home to three breweries, as the previously open Sooke Oceanside Brewery and Sooke Brewing have been joined by Bad Dog Brewing.

Bad Dog opened on December 5th, and currently has two beers available – Honey Blonde Ale (5% abv) and 642 Session Ale (4.5% abv). Two other brands – Old Red Ale (5% abv) and Tire Biter IPA (6% abv) – are listed on the brewery website, and will presumably be available soon.

Bad Dog Brewing is located at 7861 Tugwell Road in Sooke, and is open for sales of cans and merchandise from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM every day except Monday. The brewery doesn’t feature a taproom, but small samples are available to taste. Cans are in stock at Cook St. Liquor in Victoria.

Brewery news USA, MA: Village Brewing Company to open new brewpub in downtown Somerville
The owners of Village Brewing Company, the first brewpub in Somerset County, hope to open a 180-seat upscale casual restaurant and 30-seat bar in the 8,400-square-foot space on West Main Street, Somerville that used to house Woolworth's and the Somerville Antiques Center in the summer of 2018.

“Downtown Somerville is really a hot spot and the place to be,” said Iris Frank, co-owner of Village Brewing Company and director of business development and banquet services. “We considered several towns in New Jersey for our brewpub, but in the end it was an easy decision. There is such a strong sense of community and a cool vibe to the downtown. We’ve watched the amazing transformation of Somerville and the ongoing commitment to enhancing the entire downtown experience.”

Future plans call for the renovation of the lower floor into the “Village Square,” another 8,400 square feet of space that will serve as a local performing arts center, as well as a banquet and event facility.

Village Brewing Company has signed the lease with Somerville Partners, LLC. Mark Hay, a co-owner of the property, said $1.5 million will be invested in a renovation of the building and its façade to include architectural enhancements and an area ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Madras, Oregon offering incentives for first brewery to establish itself in the community
An Oregon town near one of America's microbrew meccas is thirsting for a piece of the action and offering incentives for the first brewery to establish itself in the community, the Journal Times reported on December 9.

In an internet presentation aimed at luring craft brewers, Madras — which sits between irrigated farmland and high desert within sight of the snow-capped Cascade Range — says it will assist in site selection and costs of architecture, engineering, permits and building renovation. It also offers expedited permitting, technical assistance and an opportunity for a start-up loan.

Consumption of craft beer in the U.S. keeps reaching new heights. Sales rose 6.2 percent by volume in 2016, to 24 million barrels, the Brewers Association said. Vermont has the most craft breweries per capita, with 10.8 per 100,000 adults. Oregon is fourth in the nation, with 8.1 per 100,000.

Madras has missed out so far in the craft beer craze. Some 40 miles (64 kilometers) to the south is Bend, which has at least 22 breweries for 91,000 residents (and many more hop-happy tourists) — among the highest number of microbreweries per capita in the United States.

Beer aficionados travel to Bend just to visit its brewpubs. Bend's establishments ...More info on site

Brewery news New Zealand: Lion’s beer sales up nearly 20% and brewer struggles to keep up with demand
They are drinking so much beer this summer in New Zealand that brewing giant Lion is unable to keep up with demand, Stuff.co.nz reported on December 13.

Lion New Zealand spokeswoman Genevieve O'Halloran said sales were up nearly 20 per cent compared to a year ago, which was creating supply issues for North Island customers.

O'Halloran said the problem was "widespread" and affected the company's soft drink deliveries as well.

"This is not a beer shortage - it is a logistical delivery issue ... products across the Lion portfolio are affected," she said.

O'Halloran said demand for craft beer was especially strong.

Lion's sale of Emerson's beer was up 140 per cent, and Panhead brews were up 60 per cent, compared to the same week last year, she said.

"Corona, one of Kiwi's favourite summer drops, was up 50 per cent."

Auckland's Bays Club has told its members club was experiencing a "beer shortage" and "may see some run outs" due in part to late deliveries from Lion.

"I [ordered] kegs of Lion Red on the 7th of December and still have not received them.

"My other two big suppliers do not have Lion either at this point. Hopefully it might arrive tonight."

O'Halloran said Lion had ...More info on site

Brewery news UK & Ireland: Diageo says Irish border control could cost it £1.3 mln a year
At last, one company has been bold enough to put a figure on the potential cost were border controls to be set up between northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, the Financial Times reported on December 13.

Diageo, the world’s biggest Scotch producer and Guinness brewer, said on December 13 that if trucks had to wait 15 minutes to clear the border, it estimated this would cost the company £1.3 mln a year.

Dan Mobley, Diageo’s corporate relations director, said the company treated the island of Ireland as one business. Guinness is brewed in Dublin, then crosses the border to be packaged, before crossing back into Ireland to be exported, he said.

He was giving evidence about the impact of Brexit on food and drink producers to MPs on the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee.

Bailey’s, Diageo’s cream-based whisky brand, is manufactured on both sides of the border and the company, which buys 11 per cent of Ireland’s cream output for Bailey’s, sources its cream from both the north and south.

“We are moving about 18,000 trucks a year over that border, so even small hold-ups to process those truck movements would be really unwelcome, but the big problem would be for our ...More info on site

Brewery news Mexico: Grupo Modelo increases number of beer vending centers by 67% this year
Grupo Modelo says they have seen huge growth this year and will close with a total of 8,000 beer vending centers, an increase of 67 percent over 2016, the Riviera Maya News reported on December 13.

The company says the business of beer brewing has grown rapidly, when at the end of 2015, they had 5,600 points of sale.

“A year and a half ago we accelerated the rate of openings of our retail segment in Mexico, with which we managed to close this year (2017) with more than 8 ,000 stores and we aim to open at least 1,000 more stores in the next year,” said Daniel Haskell, business unit head of Modelorama.

The new locations will be supplied with the production of the manufacturing and bottling plant from Modelo in Hidalgo, which will be ready in the first quarter of 2019.

Grupo Modelo invested 14 billion peso for the construction of the new factory, which will have an annual capacity of 12 million hectoliters, which it plans to increase progressively to double production.

Next year, Haskell said they will be cautious with the opening of the new Modeloramas to operate throughout the country.

“The number of openings will be one that makes sense with ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Molson Coors bringing China’s Snow beer to the UK market
US beer giant Molson Coors is bringing the world’s best-selling beer — a lager brewed in China — to the UK market, The Drinks Business reported on December 11.

Molson Coors will get the exclusive rights to the sales, distribution and customer marketing of Snow in the UK for both on and off-trade operations in a bid to build the firm’s presence in the ethnic restaurant sector.

The 5% ABV lager is known for its low price, retailing for around $1 per litre in China, and will compete against brands such as Cobra and Singh in the UK’s international restaurant sector.

The move comes as Molson Coors attempts to strengthen its position in the world beer market in off-trade and build a more robust presence in the UK’s international restaurant sector.

Snow, which is brewed by China Resources Enterprise, is the best-selling beer in the world, a title it has held onto for six consecutive years.

Its total volume sales for 2016 are well over double those of its closest competitor, Bud Light.

While the UK’s world beer market has grown by almost 12% in the past year, with a value of around £3.2 bln, beer consumption in China is slowing down. Back in February a ...More info on site
