USA: Big beer sales continue to slide
|
When it rains, it pours, the old saying goes, but unfortunately for the U.S.' biggest brewers, beer drinkers aren't pouring as many of their pints as they once did. Instead, they've turned to craft beer and, increasingly, Mexican imports, the Motley Fool reported on December 21.
In its third-quarter earnings report last month, Anheuser-Busch InBev saw its own production and sales fall. The megabrewer said North American volumes fell over 6% to 31.9 million hectoliters, while revenues were down 5% to $4.3 billion. Year to date, they're down almost 4% and 2.5%, respectively, suggesting the downturn is accelerating.
In particular, global Budweiser sales were down 2.2% in the third quarter, but if you removed U.S. sales from the picture, they were actually up 4.4%.
Similarly, Molson Coors also reported a decline in volumes and sales in the U.S. for its Miller Lite brand, though global volumes inched ahead 0.7% for the period. The brand was, however, able to gain market share in the U.S. premium light beer segment, the 12th consecutive quarter it had done so.

USA: Congress passes the Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act of 2017
|
The US Congress has passed the Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act of 2017 (CBMTRA), a bill that will cut the federal excise tax on beer, spirits, and wine producers effective on Jan. 1, 2018, BeverageDaily.com reported on December 21.
A number of bipartisan lawmakers as well as organizations within the US craft beverage industry including the Brewers Association (BA), the Distilled Spirits Council (DISCUS), and the Wine Institute have supported the bill since it was introduced on Jan. 30, 2017.
The bill will reduce the federal excise tax on beer from $7/barrel to $3.50/barrel for the first 60,000 barrels for brewers producing less than two million barrels of beer annually. For all other brewers and beer importers, the tax will be reduced to $16/barrel (from $18/barrel) on the first six million barrels, and the bill maintains the current $18/barrel rate for barrelage over six million.
Additionally, CBMTRA increases collaboration between brewers by permitting transfer of beer between bonded facilities without tax liability.
The reductions in barrel taxes represent more than $142m in annual savings, allowing small brewers to reinvest the extra capital into their breweries and operations, according to the BA.

South Korea: Beer confirmed as preferred beverage in a recent consumption survey
|
Drinking remained a popular pastime in Korea this year, and Koreans in their 20s and 30s drank mixed liquor, called poktanju, the most, a consumption survey by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety showed on December 21.
Consumption of somaek, a combination of beer and soju, increased most notably in 30-year somethings by 11.6 percent from last year and by 5.6 percent for those in their 20s.
The mixed drink was more popular in the younger generations than the old. Men also drank it more than women.
According to the survey, most people drank somaek because it lightened up the party (23 percent), tasted better than existing drinks (22 percent), was drunk at company events (19 percent), recommended by others (15 percent), and made them drunk quickly (7.7 percent).
The survey also showed people drank more than what they thought was okay.
Around 60 percent said they drank to excess in the past six months. By type of beverage, people drank an average of six shots of soju, five glasses of beer, three cups of rice wine, three shots of fruit wine, and four shots of whiskey.

USA & China: Stone Brewing starts official exports of its beers to China
|
Stone Brewing has started selling its beers in China, NBC 7 San Diego reported on December 22.
The Escondido, CA-based company’s brews have been available in China through the so-called grey market without company approval and were often shipped warm and with their expiration dates removed, said Greg Koch, Stone Brewing executive chairman and co-founder.
Stone beer is now shipped via the company’s cold, expedited supply chain. Temperatures are tracked throughout shipping.
“I returned from China energized and blown away by the welcome we received,” Koch said. “Our reputation has evidently preceded us, and I loved being there as our fans enjoyed the bold and complex aromas of flavors of uber fresh Stone beers for the first time.”
Among the Chinese locations stocking Stone beer are Liangshi Brewery’s Dao Taproom in Beijing; Tipsy Bar & Restaurant, Bravo, and The South 12 Craft Beer Bar in Guangzhou; Hugo Brewpub’s Foam Ranger Taproom in Xi’an; The Pub in Shenzhen; and Dazhimen Beer Restaurant, and Commune in Wuhan.

Germany: Winter barley area up by 2.5% this season
|
The German official statistics published new figures on December 21. Winter plantings for wheat are at 2.98 mln ha which is a decrease of 4.7% y/y, GrainCom reported on December 22.
The winter barley area is up by 2.5% to 1.256 mln ha, it is reported.
The total winter area is down by 2% due to bad autumn weather conditions during planting period.

USA: Hop growers set new acreage, volume and value records in 2017
|
U.S. hop growers set new records in acreage, volume and value in 2017 and for the first time Idaho surpassed Oregon in annual production, the Capital Press reported on December 21.
While the rate of growth of craft breweries has been slowing and inventories of hops have been increasing, the 2017 totals may not be peaks.
Acreage likely will increase slightly in 2018, more fields planted in recent years will come into production and some acres will shift from aroma into high alpha varieties at generally much higher yields, said Pete Mahony, vice president of supply chain management and purchasing for John I. Haas, a major processor and grower in Yakima.
“It’s simply difficult to slow a fast moving train. It might take a couple of years yet for the brakes to engage,” Mahony said.
Growth of craft breweries has fueled the increase of aroma variety hops in recent years but inventories have been increasing reflective of supply catching up with demand as the rate of craft brewery growth has slowed. On Sept. 1, U.S. hop stocks were 98 million pounds, up 15 percent from a year earlier.
