WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF POLLINATED HOPS IN BEER?

ABSTRACT
In the world of hops, the male plants are mostly considered as gate-crashers and utilised only for controlled pollination. In English hops, pollinated cones are accepted, however over the centuries prejudices have been established that seeded hops decrease flavour stability due to increased amounts of fatty acids and also cause lower alpha acid concentration. These German researchers were able to show in comparative brewing trials with seeded and unseeded hops that these two points are not necessarily true. However they also discovered that the beers with seeded hops showed a higher beta-glucosidase activity, though a higher content of aroma active compounds and a higher aroma intensity in the beers could not be shown. So there is maybe too much ado about nothing.

Brewery news USA: Mexican brands continues to dominate US beer imports
Corona and Dos Equis lovers made Mexico the supplier of more than two out of three imported beers in the U.S. last year, Bloomberg reported on February 15.

Mexico exported a staggering 712 million gallons to its northern neighbor. That’s the most among exporting nations, according to data from the Beer Institute. The Netherlands came in second place, exporting 145 million gallons for a market share of almost 14 percent. Belgium, Canada and Germany followed with single-digit market-share figures.

The most popular Mexican brands include Corona Extra and Modelo Especial, both manufactured for the U.S. market by Constellation Brands, and Dos Equis and Tecate, produced by Heineken NV’s Cuauhtemoc Moctezuma unit.

Brewery news USA: Beer dollar sales up 3% in January this year
Following a year of flat sales at off-premise retail in 2017, U.S. beer dollar sales increased 3 percent through the first four weeks of 2018, according to retail data provider IRI Worldwide.

IRI, a Chicago-based market research firm that tracks category-wide sales trends at off-premise retailers, reported total U.S. dollar sales of about $2.2 billion through January 28 in its multi-outlet and convenience (MULC) universe of stores (grocery, drug, club, dollar, mass-merchandiser and military).

Positive volume sales trends continued in three segments — imports (7.3 percent), craft beer (4.4 percent) and domestic super premiums (12.3 percent). And, after a year of decline, early volume sales trends improved for flavored malt beverages (9.8 percent).

However, volume sales of domestic premium beers (Budweiser, Bud Light, Coors Light and Miller Lite, among others) continued to slide, about 2.1 percent.

Portfolio-wide sales trends improved for Samuel Adams-maker Boston Beer Company in January, as the company increased dollar sales 10.3 percent. Scan data showed dollar sales of the latest Samuel Adams seasonal release up 85.8 percent versus last year. However, the negative dollar sales trends continued for the company’s flagship brands, Samuel Adams Boston Lager (-15.3 percent) and Rebel IPA (-22.8 percent), during the four-week period.

Brewery news Estonia: Roughly one third of all beer consumed in Estonia last year was bought in Latvia
Though producers only publish their numbers for the previous year in the second half of February, Estonia’s two biggest beer producers, Saku and A. Le Coq, confirmed to ERR's Estonian news portal last week that taking into account the amount of beer that was brought in from Latvia, domestic consumption of the drink has increased, and roughly a third of all beer consumed in Estonia last year was bought in Latvia, ERR News reported.

A. Le Coq's CEO, Tarmo Noop, told ERR that in the second half of 2017 more than a third of their production was sold to shops at the southern border. In December, the company sold more than 40 percent of its total volume there, which Noop said is a new record.

At the beginning of the year that share had been at 10-11 percent, Noop added.

A. Le Coq are not the only ones seeing a boom: Saku's sales director, Jaan Härms, told ERR's Vikerraadio that the share of cross-border trade in their business is still growing at a quick pace.

Credit card statistics confirm this as well, with the amount of money spent across the border in Latvia growing every month, also peaking in December.

Brewery news Hong Kong: Gweilo Beer ready to launch its new US$5 mln brewery
The transformation of Hong Kong craft beer company Gweilo Beer, from humble beginnings operating in a spare bedroom to a purpose-built, 1,300-square-metre (14,000-square-foot), US$5 million brewery, is almost in the can, the South China Morning Post reported on February 14.

Brewing trials began on February 8 and tests are almost complete on a state-of-the-art, US$1.2 million Italian canning machine, capable of producing 6,000 cans per hour. The facility in Fo Tan, in Hong Kong’s New Territories, will be Hong Kong’s largest craft-beer brewery and one of  Asia’s most advanced. Full-scale production is slated to start at the end of this month.

Moving to its own brewery is necessary because Gweilo – which Ian Jebbitt, 33, co-founded in 2015 with his wife, Emily, 34, and their friend Joe Gould, 35, who are all British – could not meet rising demand at the shared premises it was using.

Ian Jebbitt says: “There’s growing interest in craft beers – beer with no additives or preservatives, made in smaller batches with traceability, and created with a bit of love and passion.”

Since October, brewing equipment from Canada, a bottling machine from Germany capable of producing 3,000 bottles an hour, a centrifuge from Sweden, a  custom-made chiller from the US and ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Karnataka government announces alcohol excise duty hike by 8%
Liquor stocks hogged limelight in the afternoon trade on Friday, February 16 after Karnataka government hiked the excise duty on alcohol products by 8 per cent, the Economic Times reported.

Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah presented the state’s Budget for 2018-19 in the state assembly on February 16.

Reacting on the news, shares of United Breweries slipped over 3 per cent to Rs 1,006.55 at around 1 pm (IST). United Spirits was down 1 per cent at Rs 3,280.05 at around the same time, whereas benchmark BSE Sensex was trading 124 points, or 0.36 per cent, down at 34,173 in the afternoon trade.

Shares of other liquor firms including Ravi Kumar Distilleries, Radico Khaitan, Pioneer Distilleries and Empee Distilleries were among top losers with a loss of 5 per cent, 2.87 per cent, 2.76 per cent, 2.65 per cent, respectively.

Brewery news Turkey: Turkey to require license for importing distilled alcohol
Turkey is to require a special license for the import of distilled alcohol used in the production of home-made alcoholic drinks and for the tobacco and papers used for self-rolled cigarettes following a beer company’s complaint that the Treasury was losing tax revenue, opposition Halk TV said on February 16.

The decision, published in the Official Gazette on February 16, means that the import of ethyl alcohol, methanol, tobacco, tobacco products, rolling papers and cigarette filters will require a document from the Food, Agriculture and Livestock Ministry.

In addition, the measure bans the free circulation of concentrated alcohols that can be used as ingredients in the preparation of alcoholic drinks.

The measure comes after the Chairman of Anadolu Group, which controls approximately 80 percent of Turkey’s beer market, spoke out against home brewers.

“Alcohol sales have fallen due to an increase in home brewing,” Tuncay Özilhan said. “Home brewing also leads to a loss of tax revenue. We have shared our views on this with authorities.”

After beer consumers on Turkish social media platform Ekşisözlük organised a boycott of Anadolu Group’s flagship beer brand Efes, Özilhan issued an apology for his remarks.

Brewery news USA: Constellation Brands appoints Bill Newlands as President and Chief Operating Officer

He takes over the role of President from Rob Sands, who will remain as CEO.

Newlands joined Constellation in 2015, and was made COO in 2017. In his expanded role, Newlands will have oversight and accountability for all operating aspects of the company and “advancing Constellation Brands’ position as an industry leader”.

Barley news Canada: Barley export moving at incredible clip in 2017-18
Canada’s barley export has been moving at an incredible clip so far in the 2017-18 crop year, the Western Producer reported on February 15.

Exporters shipped 925,300 tonnes of barley through week 27 of the campaign, an 85 percent increase over the same period the previous crop year.

“It’s pretty phenomenal this year,” said Phil de Kemp, executive director of the Barley Council of Canada.

“Virtually all of that is malting barley for the surging beer market in China.”

Just a little over halfway through the 2017-18 marketing campaign, exports are 425,300 tonnes ahead of last year’s pace.

That brings into question Agriculture Canada’s full-year export forecast of 2.45 million tonnes, which is 128,000 tonnes more than the previous year. The forecast includes the barley equivalent of malt exports.

Brennan Turner, president of FarmLead, believes exports will end up between 2.8 and 2.9 million tonnes, which means carryout will be smaller than Agriculture Canada’s 1.55 million tonne estimate.

Derek Squair, president of Agri-Trend Marketing, agrees that Agriculture Canada is going to have to revise its numbers at some point if exports keep up the current pace.

And he believes that will happen because China’s demand is strong and Canada’s quality is exceptional.

Unfortunately, he does not believe that will ...More info on site

Barley news EU: Big barley import tender from Saudi Arabia adding pressure on EU supplies
Strategie Grains on February 15 cut its forecast for the European Union’s soft wheat exports this season, citing poor competitiveness of French and Polish wheat on the world market.

The private analyst firm cut French non-EU exports to 8.5 million tonnes, well below the forecast of 9.0 million given by farming agency FranceAgriMer on February 14. It also put French end of season stocks much higher than the agency.

“It’s not a pretty picture for French farmers,” one futures dealer said. “There’s going to be a huge carry-out (stock) unless the picture alters significantly.”

Weekly EU data confirmed the sluggish pace of overall exports from the bloc. By Feb. 13, EU soft wheat exports were 19 percent below last season’s pace at 12.8 million tonnes.

Exporters have faced stiff competition from cheaper origins like Russian and Argentine wheat, while low international prices have discouraged west European farmers from selling.

Barley was in focus again, with a big import tender from Saudi Arabia adding to pressure on supplies.

“In barley, it’s really difficult to find available merchandise without paying a high price,” one French broker said.

Saudi Arabia is seeking 960,000 tonnes of barley in a tender with a bidding deadline on Friday, February 16.
