Barley news Canada: Barley area shrinking but steady and growing demand brings in new opportunities
The current state of Canada’s barley industry is grim, The Alberta Farm Express reported on April 10.

“Barley’s piece of the pie is shrinking,” said Shannon Sereda, manager of market development and policy for Alberta Barley.

“It’s no longer in a dominant position like it once was in Western Canada.”

Barley acres across the Prairies have been in a long-term decline, Sereda said at the Western Barley Growers Association annual meeting last month — falling from 6.4 million acres in 2012 to just 4.9 million last year.

The sharpest decline was in Manitoba where barley has been largely replaced by soybeans and corn. But Alberta hasn’t been immune either, falling from 3.4 million acres in 2012 to 2.5 million acres last year.

“Growers are moving away from barley to higher-value crops, like canola and wheat,” said Sereda. “The on-farm return on investment for barley has come under pressure when you’re making decisions against other commodities.”

There is “intense price competition” in both brewing and feed sectors, she added. The brewing industry has shifted more and more to adjuncts such as rice and corn to supplement malt and reduce costs. Beer makers are also sourcing lower-priced malt from other growing regions. Meanwhile, feeders are increasingly turning to ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Brick Brewing reports net revenue of C49.8 mln for 2017
Brick Brewing Co. Limited (“Brick” or the “Company”), Ontario’s largest Canadian-owned brewery, released on April 12 its results for the fourth quarter and full year ended January 31, 2018.

Brick recorded annual EBITDA (ex one-time costs) of C$9.0 million on a net revenue of C$49.8 million. EBITDA for the fourth quarter was C$1.81 million.

George Croft, Brick President and Chief Executive Officer commented, “We are pleased with the growth of our owner brands and co-pack business. The integration of our operating facilities is now complete, and we look forward to the challenge of delivering exceptional results in the upcoming year. We experienced challenging market conditions during 2017 with a cool, wet summer which drove overall full-year industry volume lower by 5.1%. Despite the category declines, Laker grew 6% in the year, Waterloo was up 10% and the LandShark and Margaritaville family grew 45%. We are excited about a new can line upgrade project that is well under way and will double our canning capacity. We expect to leverage the increased capacity and improved supply chain efficiencies over the next fiscal year in both our own branded volumes and with our contract manufacturing.

Brick reported 28% growth ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Driftwood's Vista Brewing to open on Friday, April 20
Vista Brewing, a hospitality destination located on a 21-acre historic property in Driftwood, Texas, will open on Friday, April 20, Brewbound reported on April 11.

The beer program, led by award-winning brewmaster, Josh Watterson, features traditional beer styles that pay homage to European origins, while honoring the Texas Hill Country. Watterson, who came to Vista from Brasserie Saint James in Reno, NV, will feature beer styles such as Dark Skies Black Pilsner and Merriwether Foraged Brett IPA, a seasonal collaboration with Foraging Texas using wood sorrel, agarita and dewberry blossoms. Watterson has already launched an extensive barrel program, with 50 barrels from neighboring wineries aging to perfection, including their Commencement Barrel-Aged Brett Ale, using Bending Branch Winery barrels that will be available on opening day, and two unique Belgian-style lambics, which will age in barrels up to 18 months. All beers are made with water sourced directly from the limestone-filtered water well on property, offering a true taste of Texas’ environment. In addition to the Vista beers on tap, the tasting room menu boasts a curated wine list and non-alcoholic beverages, as well as a retail shop with items from local artisans.

Vista will also offer an integrated culinary program created by ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Ground Effect Brewing Co. set to open in Hudson sometime this summer
If all goes as planned, Hudson will see its second brewery in three years open this summer, the Worcester Business Journal reported on April 11.

Ground Effect Brewing Co. is set to open in a commercial building at 312 Main St., the site of a former crossfit gym. According to brewer Tim Daley, the brewery and taproom is expected to open sometime in the summer.

The name of the brewery, said the aspiring aviator, is a play on an aviation term and a nod to the farming nature of beermaking.

"Beer seems like an industrial thing with all of the equipment and stainless steel," he said, "but we forget it's a farmed product."

Speaking of stainless steel, the brewery recently received its equipment, which will allow the brewery to produce about 40 barrels per week.

Much of the construction has already been completed. On April 11, workers were installing the complicated plumbing infrastructure necessary for brewing, and electrical work is scheduled next, Daley said.

The brewery was conceived about two years ago when Daley was introduced to owners Marc Ferlo and Alexi Bobolia, co-owners of Northborough-based painting company Aurora Exterior Painting.

Ferlo and Bobolia learned of Daley's brewing knowledge through his girlfriend, who works as a bartender ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Oregon’s second largest hop grower to launch on-farm Trellis Brewing Co.
B&D Farms, Oregon’s second largest hop grower, will soon add an on-farm craft brewery, the Capital Press reported on April 12.

Leading the operation is 26-year-old Austin Smith, who is a fifth generation hop farmer. He believes he can pull the best hop cones from the drying room into his own brewing vats and make the best beer anywhere.

Born, raised and schooled in the heart of the Willamette Valley, Austin graduated with an agriculture degree from Linn Benton Community College. With partners Jace Kelly and Tyler Bothwell, he expects to be open as Trellis Brewing Co. by early summer.

“On the hop farm side of things, it was pretty natural to pick up a knack for beer making,” Austin said. “It was 2014, when my friends and I started making beer in my garage. By 2016, my uncle (Ben Smith) suggested we turn an old workshop we weren’t using into a meeting room or a brewery or something, and that’s all the encouragement I needed.”

His father, Dave Smith, agreed that “as long as he could get free beer and a place to hold meetings, he was in,” Austin Smith said.

Austin, who likes brewing with friends over working alone, met his partners in ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Weatherhead Brew Co. introduces first beer while building its brewery in Perth
Weatherhead Brew Co. is introducing their first beer while currently building their brewery at 29 Beckwith Street East in Perth, the Ontario Beverage Network reported on April 9.

The brewery was named for local historical figure Samuel Weatherhead.

Weatherhead’s Pilot IPA – brewed with Simcoe, Mosaic, and Citra hops – was brewed at Big Rig Brewery in Ottawa.

It will be available starting Tuesday April 10, 2018 at O’reilly’s Ale House in Perth, followed by more locations to be announced.

Brewery news USA, WA: Reuben’s Brews expanding into full-scale production facility in Seattle
Reuben’s Brews is expanding into a full-scale production facility at a large, historic building at the corner of 8th Ave. NW and NW 46th St. in Seattle, My Ballard reported on April 12.

The brewery has been operating out of several locations to keep up with growth, explained co-founder Adam Robbings in an announcement on April 12.

“As we grew we needed space, but unfortunately nothing was ever available within the same building!” Robbings wrote in an email. “But now we are so excited to announce that we will be bringing most of our production together at 800 NW 46th St. The building is not only less than half a mile away from our taproom and brewery (which will remain in its current location), but it is also walking distance from our home.”

Robbings co-founded the brewery with his wife Grace (their first child is named Reuben) back in 2012. He said it was important to find a production facility in his home neighborhood of Ballard, close to the taproom. He says they plan to “carefully renovate” the historic facility.

“The building is getting a big overhaul – new roof, new siding, new insulation and heating systems – but the character of its 70 ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Stormcloud Brewing Company launches new brewing facility in Frankfort
Frankfort’s Stormcloud Brewing Company has launched a new brewing facility capable of pumping out 4,500 barrels of beer a year, the Traverse City Record Eagle reported on April 12.

The facility, at 366 Parkview Lane, is at the east end of town. A tasting room at the new location is scheduled to open to the public on May 25 and will feature an outdoor beer garden similar to the company’s existing downtown brewpub, a few blocks to the west.

The massive new structure houses a 20-barrel brewhouse and a new canning system that can fill about 40 cans a minute. The canning line began operation in March with two of Stormcloud’s most popular brews: Whiled Away® IPA, a Belgian-style IPA and best seller in Stormcloud’s downtown Frankfort pub; and Rainmaker Ale, a Belgian-style Pale Ale that earned a bronze medal at Denver’s Great American Beer Festival.

Six packs of both beers have been distributed to stores in 11 Michigan counties, including the cities of Traverse City, Manistee and Ludington, a release said. As production increases, Stormcloud brews also will be distributed in Petoskey, Cheboygan, Alpena, Muskegon and Grand Rapids.

Public tours of Stormcloud’s new production facility will begin this summer. Stormcloud’s owners in 2016 ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: MillerCoors responds to Stone Brewing’s trademark lawsuit
It took two months, but MillerCoors has finally responded to Stone Brewing’s trademark lawsuit, Brewbound reported on April 11.

In February, the San Diego craft brewery filed a lawsuit against the multinational beer company alleging that its rebranded packaging and advertisements for the Keystone brand infringed upon Stone Brewing’s own “Stone” trademark.

Early on April 11, MillerCoors answered back with several counterclaims, asking the court to grant it the “exclusive” right to use the “Stone” mark in conjunction with U.S. beer sales.

In its 82-page retort, MillerCoors, a subsidiary of Molson Coors Brewing Company, called the claims in Stone Brewing’s February lawsuit “misleading and ultimately meritless” as well as a “publicity stunt and a platform to market its beer.”

“Stone Brewing’s complaint makes grandiose allegations, but leaves out most of the facts relevant to this dispute,” the filing alleges.

According to MillerCoors, among the facts omitted from Stone’s lawsuit is that all Keystone cans and packages are labeled “Keystone” and include the “Coors Brewing Company” logo.

MillerCoors also noted prior use of the term “’Stone” in ads promoting the Keystone brand dating back to 1992. The company shared images of a 1996 newspaper advertisement using the tag line “Start Your Party with the ’Stone.”

Brewery news Australia: Wine most popular, but beer most drunk by Australians - report
The Roy Morgan Alcohol Currency Report has found that 69.3 per cent of Australians aged 18 and over drink alcohol in an average four-week period, the Food Magazine reported on April 12.

According to the report, of all Australians 18+ years old, 44.5 per cent consume wine, 39.1 per cent consume beer, 27.5 per cent consume spirits, and 13.6 per cent consume cider.

When looking at drinkers by gender, men are the predominant consumers of alcohol, with 74 per cent consuming alcohol in an average four-week period, compared to 65 per cent of women.

Women had the highest incidence of wine consumption, with nearly 50 per cent of all women drinking wine in an average 4 weeks compared to 39 per cent of men. Wine skews to older drinkers, with the highest incidence among 50+ and 35-49 year olds.

In contrast, beer is consumed by 59 per cent of men in an average 4 weeks, compared to only 20 per cent of women. Beer is fairly constant across age, increasing slightly from 18-49, but declines for the 50+ age group.

Cider is fairly evenly split between the genders with a slight skew towards women, but it is heavily skewed to younger Australians compared to old, ...More info on site

Brewery news Vietnam: Ministry of Finance asks Sabeco to pay US$111 mln worth of undistributed profit to State Budget
The Ministry of Finance has asked the Saigon Beer-Alcohol-Beverage Joint Stock Corporation (Sabeco) to pay about VND2.5 trillion (US$111 million) worth of undistributed profit to the State Budget, VietNamNet Bridge reported on April 11.

The inquiry follows a recent report of the State Audit of Viet Nam, which in March proposed Sabeco pay the same amount of money to the State Budget.

According to the audit report sent to the Government, that amount of money was part of Sabeco’s VND2.7 trillion in undistributed profit and considered the dividend that the Government should have received from Sabeco for its 89.6 per cent stake in the company recorded as of December 31, 2016.

Sabeco should have paid the dividend to the State as the Government was holding nearly 89.6 per cent of the brewer prior to 2016, not 36 per cent – the State’s remaining stake in Sabeco after selling 53.6 per cent in December 2017 – as reported in the firm’s financial statements, the audit agency said in its report.

This action did not comply with Decree 99/2012 issued by the Government in November 2012 regulating obligations and duties that State-owned enterprises should uphold to ensure efficient use of the State capital in their businesses, ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Unusually cold spring may reduce spring barley area
Ukraine is expected to harvest 26-28 million tonnes of maize and 7.7-8 million tonnes of barley in 2018, consultancy UkrAgroConsult said on April 11, warning that unusually cold spring weather had complicated the barley sowing campaign.

"There are risks not all the barley will be sown due to a late spring," it said.

This year farmers started sowing a month later than last year due to a cold and snowy spring and UkrAgroConsult said the best terms for sowing would expire next week.

A very short sowing campaign could also cut the area sown to maize and farmers may prefer to sow more sunflower in a bid to compensate the lost areas of barley and maize.

The consultancy said Ukraine could harvest 26-28 million tonnes of maize this year while its output of sunflower seed could total 14.2 to 14.5 million tonnes.

The harvest of rape seed is likely to reach 2.5 million tonnes, while soybean output could be around 3.7 million tonnes.

UkrAgroConsult said Ukraine's total grain crop could rise to around 62 million tonnes this year from 61.3 million in 2017.

Last year, Ukraine harvested 26.1 million tonnes of wheat; 24.1 million tonnes of maize; 8.3 million tonnes of barley; 12.2 million tonnes of sunseed; ...More info on site

Whisky news Kenya: Diageo’s East African Breweries to start producing Captain Morgan rum locally, add other international spirits soon
Diageo’s East African Breweries (EABL) will start producing Captain Morgan rum locally as part of wider investment in its spirit business in response to growing demand.

The company told Reuters it has begun investing the 1.4 billion shillings ($13.88 million) earmarked for the spirits division. Its investment includes funding for a 20,000 bottles per hour distillery line that will double production at its plant on the outskirts of Nairobi.

The international brand Captain Morgan will be manufactured locally to cut costs and make high-end offerings more widely accessible to domestic consumers.

EABL’s domestic version of the spirit, Captain Morgan Gold, will retail at 800-900 shillings per 750 ml bottle — half the price of imported bottles. Production is slated to begin within the next month, the company said.

“The liquid is loved. What we are doing is to make sure we democratise it to make it more widely accessible,” said Andrew Kilonzo, EABL’s head of premium spirits sales.

EABL plans to produce other Diageo international spirits locally, he said without specifying brands.

Sales of spirits at EABL grew 20 percent in Kenya last year, marking a shift in the East African nation where beer, including EABL’s Tusker, has long been the preferred alcoholic beverage.
