Brewery news USA, OH: Ohio Brewing Co. applies for state permit to launch production brewery in Columbus
Ohio Brewing Co. is expanding its territory, the Akron Beacon Journal reported on April 17.

Ohio, which is in the process of opening a brewpub in Cuyahoga Falls, has applied for a state permit to launch a production brewery and taproom in the Italian Village neighborhood in Columbus.

Brewery co-founder Chris Verich said Tuesday that Ohio has partnered with New Besa LLC and the Velio family to open the Columbus site, which will be located at 421 E. Second Ave. The Velio family runs bars and restaurants in Central Ohio.

“They are really good people,” Verich said. “We’re happy to partner with them.”

The plan is to open a 30-barrel brewhouse with a large beer hall. The brewery also will produce beer to distribute on draft and in bottles — and possibly cans.

“It’s finally an opportunity to meet the demand for our products,” Verich said about the production brewery.

Ohio is known for brands such as Verich Gold, O’Hoppy Ale and Jingle Bell Ale. He hopes the Columbus brewery and taproom could open as soon as late summer.

Meanwhile, the Cuyahoga Falls brewpub, 2250 Front St., hopes to open in early summer.

The brewpub, which is nearly 15,000 square feet, will be “really special,” Verich said, with ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Beer Republic Brewing set to open in downtown Lawrenceville
A new brewery is set to open in downtown Lawrenceville, the city announced on April 17.

Beer Republic Brewing will move into a 56,000-square-foot space on N. Clayton Street and open a brewery, taproom and retail space, according to a city release. There is no open date set for the brewery yet, but its use of the N. Clayton Street space was approved at a meeting of Lawrenceville’s planning commission on April 16.

Beer Republic is serving as the parent company for two smaller companies: Big Kettle Brewing and Ironshield Beer. Big Kettle Brewing will offer contract brewing services for other companies and Ironshield Beer will be Beer Republic’s house brand. Owners Dave Rice and Glen Sprouse plan to produce more than 30 varieties of beer, the release says.

The brewery expects to employ 50 people within the next five years, according to the release. Positions will include brewers, cellarmen, packaging operators and lab technicians. Beer Republic aims to be among the top five largest breweries in Georgia, the release says.

Rice and Sprouse have more than 50 years’ experience in the brewing and beverage production industry combined. Sprouse is a veteran brewer and engineer, with 10 years experience brewing and 30 years ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Richmond’s Isley Brewing Co. planning second location in Virginia Beach
Richmond’s Isley Brewing Co. is planning to open a second location in Virginia Beach, joining a handful of local craft breweries that have branched out to other locations in the state, Richmond.com reported on April 19.

Isley Brewing, which has a brewery and taproom on Summit Avenue in the Scott’s Addition area of Richmond, will open its second location in a 5,582-square-foot building at 315 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach government officials announced.

The building is in Virginia Beach’s ViBe Creative District, an area of small shops, restaurants, coffee bars and offices within walking distance of the beach, between 17th and 22nd streets, where the city has offered incentives to attract “creative industries” such as artisans and technology firms, as a revitalization strategy.

The new brewery, located in a building built in 1946, is scheduled to open in July and will be capable of making 2,000 barrels of beer a year, the city said. It will have a tasting room and space for live music and events.

“This is a great re-use of the property,” said Michelle Chapleau, business development coordinator for the city’s economic development department. She said the building was previously a night club that closed.

“It has been sitting vacant for some ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Des Plaines hoping to become first brewery in Des Plaines
Fibs Brewing Company will become the first brewery in Des Plaines if plans to open this year follow through, the Journal & Topics Newspaper reported on April 18.

Dean VandenBiesen and Greg Herro, two longtime Des Plaines business owners, are set to open the brewery at 260 Howard Ave. in Mercury Corporate Center, between Mount Prospect and Wolf roads. The team is currently brewing small batch samples of original recipes, including an IPA, double IPA, porter, Imperial ale, Belgian ale and lager.

“We’ve got good recipes for at least 10 beers,” said VandenBiesen. “We want to perfect them.” Though they aim to open to the public by this fall, he said he and Herro are not in a rush.

“We want to have a good variety of high quality beers,” VandenBiesen said.

Along with Herro, VandenBiesen began brewing out of his garage about five years ago. It started as a hobby, but they quickly became more serious about brewing. For the past three years, VandenBiesen and Herro have worked with city staff to make their dream of opening a brewery and tap house a reality.

About two years ago, Des Plaines aldermen amended city code to allow for breweries. The city council was expected ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Winston-Salem’s Incendiary Brewing Co. eyeing grand opening bash during Labor Day weekend
Wake Forest Innovation Quarter and Wexford Science & Technology announced on April 17 the addition of Incendiary Brewing Co., a locally owned brewery and taproom as the newest tenant in Bailey Power Plant in Winston-Salem, NC, Brewbound reported.

Incendiary will occupy approximately 6,200 square feet on the first floor of Bailey Power Plant, including a 2,000-sq. ft. taproom to showcase an impressive line of IPAs, barrel-aged beers and adjunct/spiced beers to go along with several classic styles. The brewery will occupy another 2,000 square feet of connected outdoor space in of the former power plant coal pit, providing additional seating and an open-air downtown vibe.

Construction in the space has begun and the company hopes to throw a grand opening bash Labor Day weekend. The brewery is expected to have around 10 new part-time and full-time employees.

Incendiary Brewing is owned by Winston-Salem natives Brandon Branscome and John Bacon, who began crafting their own homebrew together as a hobby in 1997. After a series of fits and starts, the two partnered together in 2013 to create a line of award-winning homebrews in their free time, bringing home first place in the 2016 Masters Championship of Amateur Brewing for their signature IPA, Shift.

Brewery news USA, DE: Mispillion River Brewing finalizing negotiations for new brewpub in Milford
In February Mispillion River Brewing announced that they plan to open a new brewpub in Milford. Although they cannot release information on the exact location as lease negotiations are still being finalized, the new brewpub will be located on Route 1 in Milford, the Milford Live reported on April 17.

“We are long-term Milford residents and we wanted the opportunity to show visitors the community experience Milford has to offer,” Lauren Bigelow, Mispillion’s Marketing Director said. “We have so many great artisans and such a beautiful culture, we wanted the chance to bring it to as many people as possible.

The new location will be a completely new building that will be designed to attract not only Milford residents but those traveling through Milford to get to other destinations. The new brewpub will offer a lot of shareables and handheld menu items. Although the brewery has not officially announced the location as they are finalizing paperwork, a billboard on Route 1 indicates that it will be located between Royal Farms and Grotto Pizza.

“We will also offer a full bar,” Ms. Bigelow said. “We recognize that many people are not beer drinkers and we do not want to exclude them. The current location ...More info on site

Brewery news Vietnam: Experts speak against ban on sale of alcoholic drinks at night
Experts spoke out against a proposed ban on the sale of alcoholic drinks at night during a conference on April 18, the VnExpress International reported.

The proposal aims to restrict the sale of alcohol and advertising after 10 p.m. in Vietnam, excluding international airport terminals and areas designated for food, entertainment and tourism.

The proposed ban would lead to binge drinking, said Dau Anh Tuan, head of the legal department at the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI).

"Some countries have approved this regulation, but it doesn't really work. We can ban labelled products, but not home brew,” Tuan said.

The regulation needs to be looked at again, otherwise genuine brands might suffer while small home brew makers who don't pay tax could benefit, Tuan added.

The term “areas designated for food, entertainment and tourism” in the proposal is not specifically defined, said Matt Wilson, director of foreign affairs for Heineken Vietnam LTD.

Wilson said the ban might affect big entertainment events like the annual Heineken Countdown, which attracts a lot of young people on New Year's Eve.

“I think the government’s goal can be entirely achievable by self-regulatory regulations,” Wilson said, citing that 40 percent of the world’s major markets have been successful in self-regulation ...More info on site

Brewery news The Democratic Republic of Congo: Beer industry likely to survive in spite of all difficulties and calamities
The Bralima brewery in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), is an island of modernity in a city where chaos is the norm. Inside a building near the docks where barges begin the journey up the Congo river, conveyor belts rattle as thousands of glass bottles are washed and filled with amber liquid. A generator hums to power the new brewing machinery, creating enough booze to fill 28,000 crates every two days, The Economist reported on April 19.

Yet the real achievement of Bralima, which is owned by Heineken, a Dutch brewer, is not making the beer. It is what happens when it leaves the factory. Congo is one of the worst-connected, most dysfunctional countries on Earth. Four times the size of France, it has almost no all-weather roads. In large parts of eastern DRC, the state is a fiction and rebels control the roads. Yet there is scarcely a village where it is impossible to get a beer.

Bralima was founded in 1923. Its main competitors, Bracongo and Brasimba, both owned by Castel, a secretive French family firm that operates across Africa, have been there almost as long. They are among the only surviving companies from the ...More info on site

Barley news Russia: July-February barley exports hit all-time high for this period
Russian barley exports in July-February 2017/18 hit an all-time high for these months. Barley shipments to foreign markets totalled 4.1 mln tonnes, which is up 36% from the whole 2016/17 season (3 mln tonnes), UkrAgroConsult reported on April 20.

Traditionally, Saudi Arabia remains the top export destination for Russian barley this season, absorbing 37% of its exports.

Iran is the second largest importer of Russian barley. Its deliveries to the country exceeded 1.1 mln tonnes during the reporting period, i.e. more than twice as much as during the whole last season.

In addition, Russia resumed barley supplies to Turkey and Kuwait. Russian exporters shipped 384.6 thousand tonnes of the commodity to the Turkish market in July-February 2017/18 - the largest volume since MY 2014/15. Exports to Kuwait totaled 126 thousand tonnes. Last time Russia exported barley to this market in the 2015/16 season (190 thousand tonnes).

Barley news Australia: Barley leading in Western Australia’s grain growers’ seeding programs this year
Barley has emerged as the star of Western Australia’s grain growers’ seeding programs this year, with prices historically high and the state’s predicted plantings up seven per cent compared to last year, the West reported on April 19.

Australia exported almost 2.5 million tonnes of barley between the start of October last year and end of February, as demand for feed in north-east Asia soared.

Grain Industry Association of Western Australia crop report author Michael Lamond said current feed barley prices — about A$270 a tonne — were within 10 per cent of record prices. “The yields growers are getting from barley in a lot of cases are exceeding wheat, especially feed barleys,” he said.

“When you combine a higher price with extra yield it makes sense for a lot of growers to grow barley instead of wheat.”

Mr Lamond said growers across all port zones except Esperance had touted increased barley plantings, with malt varieties likely to be popular in the northern grainbelt this year.

Feed barley was trading about A$270/t this week, a rise of about A$50/t since November. Comparatively, prices for Australian Standard White wheat were about A$239/t this week.

The China-Australia Free Trade Agreement has also removed a 3 per cent tariff ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Japan’s top 4 brewers to address shortage of drivers by sharing transport resources
Asahi, Kirin, Sapporo and Suntory will deliver products across Japan via the same long-distance trucks and trains, in a rare display of co-operation among the nation’s big four beer brands, FoodBev reported on April 19. According to Suntory, the move will address “the shortage of drivers”, while reducing CO2emission at the same time.

The firm estimated that all four companies can secure a long-distance transport capacity equivalent to 2,400 heavy-duty trucks by rail container, reducing annual CO2 emissions by about 1,500t, which is 74% of conventional transport models.

The initiative has been up and running for the past two weeks.

In Japan, rising cost incurred by long distance shipping and a lack of manpower have forced competitors in the same industry to share transport resources.

For instance, Asahi and Kirin, the two largest companies by market share, have begun to transport products together by rail across Japan last year.

Through this partnership, CO2 emissions are expected to be reduced by 2,700 tonnes annually through the modal switch to rail containers from an annual equivalent of 10,000 long-distance delivery trucks.

In order to facilitate transport, the two companies have even established a joint logistics centre in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture.
