Canada & USA: Canada not expected to continue importing large quantities of US feed barley
|
A limited market for feed barley in Canada raised prices and increased corn and barley imports from the US in 2017/18, but conditions are not expected to continue, says USDA.
Dry weather has been one factor influencing the planting of feed grains for Canadian producers as acres are expected to shift to wheat, barley or non-lentil pulses in 2018/19.
Details of grain and feed production in Canada were released by an agricultural specialist with the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) last week.
“Prior to March, large crop-growing areas of the prairies received only 40-60% of average winter precipitation,” the specialist reported. “The impact of this shortfall could amplify the effects of below average precipitation carried in from the 2017 growing season, particularly in central Saskatchewan. Achieving average yields for all crops covered in this report would depend on moisture condition improvements.”
There has been additional snowfall in March, but it remains to be seen if that will help recharge the soil moisture conditions, she said. “If the snow melts too quickly, then water will run off the frozen ground, whereas a slow melt would add moisture back to the soil,” she added.

USA, VA: Dragon Hops Brewing Company ready to open after months of renovations on May 5
|
After months of renovations, the long-awaited Dragon Hops Brewing Company, located at 130 E. Main Street in Purcellville, is ready to open May 5, the Loudoun Times-Mirror reported.
Owned by Marilla Coryell, her partner Ryan Wilton and son Jamie Horris, Dragon Hops is a family-and-veteran-owned organic farm that has been growing and selling hops in Purcellville for the past few years.
“We are all veterans and big proponents of the military. My son was shot in Afghanistan while I was in Iraq. My partner Ryan also served in Kuwait,” Coryell said.
They started the farm several years ago and initially marketed their hops as “fresh, green hops,” but they found a demand for processing the hops to dehydrated pellets. So, they decided to take their business a step further. They purchased equipment and developed a fully functioning processing facility at the farm.
Once they created the processing facility, they decided the “logical next step” was to open a brewery.
The brewery is located in the former Purcellville Marketplace, which previously served as the town hall. They have made many renovations to the space, including removing offices and bringing in their 10-barrel system, which will soon be a 20-barrel system this summer.

Canada, AB & BC: Big Rock Brewery and Fireweed Brewing announce details of new joint venture
|
Big Rock Brewery and Fireweed Brewing – the parent company of Tree Brewing, as well as Dukes Cider and Shaftebury Brewing – have announced details of a new joint venture agreement, the Canadian Beer News reported on April 20.
Under the partnership, the two companies will jointly run and brew at Big Rock’s Vancouver facility, which is currently being renovated to include a canning line and new equipment to increase brewing capacity to 26,000 hectolitres. A separate contract agreement will see Tree brands brewed at Big Rock’s Calgary plant for the Alberta market.
The agreement will go into effect on May 31st, with joint operations to commence in June.

USA, MA: Night Shift Brewing to open new location in Boston in late 2018
|
Fast-growing Massachusetts-based Night Shift Brewing will open a second brewery and taproom on the first floor of the building that houses the Converse World Headquarters in Boston, Brewbound has learned.
Located at 1 Lovejoy Wharf, the new location will include a 10-barrel brewing system and have the capacity to produce upwards of 2,500 barrels, co-founder Michael Oxton told Brewbound.
Oxton confirmed that a lease has been signed and that Night Shift intends to open the new location in late 2018.
The new brewery and taproom will span 12,000 sq. ft., include a kitchen and serve a variety of Night Shift beers made onsite.
Investment and lease figures were not disclosed, but the entire building was sold in 2016 for about $700 per sq. ft., according to The Boston Globe.
At least one other craft beer company, Michigan’s Atwater Brewing, had been eyeing the Converse building as a potential out-of-state location, Brewbound understands.
Night Shift’s original brewery and taproom, located in Everett, Massachusetts, is capable of producing about 20,000 barrels. The company also produces a portion of its beer under contract at Isle Brewers Guild in Rhode Island and operates a beer, wine, spirits and non-alcoholic beverage distribution company called Night Shift Distributing.

USA, CO: Atrevida Beer Company to hold grand opening celebration on May 5
|
Atrevida Beer Company will have its grand opening celebration on Saturday, May 5 — Cinco de Mayo — the final step in the business's metamorphosis under new owner Jessica Fierro, who operates the company with husband Richard and business partner Steve Marzulla, the Colorado Springs Independent reported on April 20.
“We should be starting the festivities right around noon and going in through the night,” says Fierro.
She bought the brewery, then known as Great Storm Brewing, from then-owners Jeff and Lynn Jacobs in January 2018. Over the months, she and her team have been preparing for the rebranding and reopening, which will include a renovated space and a portfolio of new beers.
For the grand opening, Atrevida will have a total of 15 taps — Fierro's bringing out a multi-tap kegerator setup so she can pour more beers. The offerings will range from an imperial rye IPA to a porter brewed with Mexican condensed milk and dulce de leche to a fresas con crema strawberry cream ale on nitro.
“We’re going to have a variety," she says. "I’ve made sure to ramp up my production so people have a really good idea of what my beer style is, and my brewing style.”

USA, MI: New Holland Brewing Company gets Battle Creek Unlimited's $200,000 brewery incentive
|
Battle Creek Unlimited's $200,000 brewery incentive has been awarded to New Holland Brewing Company, WZZM13.com reported on April 20.
At the end of December, Battle Creek Unlimited put out a request for proposals to breweries interested in coming to Battle Creek, offering up to $200,000 in financial assistance.
The incentive was announced alongside requests for proposals for three downtown properties — 15 Carlyle St., 64 W. Michigan Ave. and 119 W. Michigan Ave.
New Holland's proposal was accepted for both the $200,000 and the 64 W. Michigan Ave. property, which sits right across from Wave Square and next to Rice's Shoe Store.
“We are pleased to expand our footprint into Battle Creek and look forward to partnering with the community to bring a vibrant venue, authentic beer and spirits, and quality service to downtown Battle Creek," said Brett VanderKamp, the president and founder of New Holland, in a press release. "We see several key downtown projects on the horizon as a turning point for downtown Battle Creek and are excited to be a part of the equation.”
New Holland was founded in Holland in 1997. It operates New Holland Pub in Holland, Knickerbocker in Grand Rapids and a Holland production facility.

USA: AB InBev hoping for permanent exemptions to aluminium imported from allies
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world's largest brewer with North American headquarters in St. Louis, is hopeful that the United States will grant permanent exemptions to aluminum imported from allies and wants Congress to look into price spikes that have already set in, STLtoday.com reported on April 25.
President Donald Trump last month imposed import tariffs of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum, but provided temporary exemptions until May 1 for the European Union, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Australia, and South Korea.
Carlos Brito, chief executive of Budweiser-maker AB InBev, which sells many of its beers in the United States in aluminum cans, said the company had been very disappointed by the introduction of tariffs, which he said had put U.S. manufacturers at a disadvantage.
"We are very hopeful on the other hand that the list of allies continues to get populated because then you could maybe get to the situation where 80 percent of the aluminum supply — Canada being the biggest supplier — could be exempted from the tariff," Brito said after a meeting of the company's shareholders on April 25.

USA, NC: Fermented Nonsense Brewing coming to Asheville in just a few months

South Asheville will be getting a nano-brewery in just a few months. Fermented Nonsense Brewing will be coming to South Asheville either late summer or early fall of 2018. Fermented Nonsense Brewing will be located inside the multi-award winning Craft Centric Taproom & Bottleshop in South Asheville, NC at 100 Julian Shoals Dr Unit 40, Arden, NC 28704. Fermented Nonsense Brewing will be owned by Craft Centric owner, Matt Vaughan, and Craft Centric Manager, Josh Austin, and will be operated as a separate venture, and will, for the time-being, only be available on tap in Craft Centric Taproom, the Mountain Xpress reported on April 20.
Josh Austin is an award-winning homebrewer and BJCP Certified Beer Judge, with several years of internship and volunteering experience at the professional level. Matt Vaughan has several years of sales experience, Certified Level 1 Cicerone, and operates the recently voted, #1 Craft Beer Bar in NC, Craft Centric.
Fermented Nonsense Brewing has recently submitted its application for TTB approval, and will hopefully be brewing within the next few months.

Canada, ON: StoneHammer Brewing reportedly closed down
|
Ontario beer writer Ben Johnson reports via Ben’s Beer Blog that Guelph’s StoneHammer Brewing has closed down after more than two decades of business.
While no official announcement has been made by the brewery, Johnson says sources have confirmed that “last week employees were told to head home and asked not to return and that production of beer had ceased permanently.”
StoneHammer was founded in 1995 by Rich Fortnum and Charles MacLean under the name F&M Brewing, and has been owned since 2015 by Phillip and Lesley Woodhouse, who changed the name to match the branding of the brewery’s core beer line-up.

Rwanda: Bralirwa’s pretax profit raises to 7.7 bln francs from 2.67 mln in 2016
|
Rwandan brewer Bralirwa said on April 23 its pretax profit rose to 7.709 billion francs ($9 million) in 2017, from 2.67 billion francs a year earlier, helped by lower financing costs that cushioned a slight revenue drop, Reuters reported.
Bralirwa is Rwanda’s oldest brewery and has rights to produce beer brands such as Amstel. It also produces branded soft drinks such as Coca-Cola.
It said its sales volumes fell by 12 percent to 1.5 billion francs in 2017, hurt by the impact of price rises of both soft drinks and beer and strong competition.
“We used to be in (a) monopoly situation in 10 years ago and now we are facing strong competition from local production coming from Skol but also from imports … from Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya,” Victor Madiela managing director, said.
Bralirwa said its earnings per share rose to 3.75 francs from 1.36 francs in 2016.

Vietnam: Sabeco shareholders vote to add three ThaiBev representatives to management board
|
Shareholders of Vietnam’s largest brewer Sabeco voted to add three representatives of Thai Beverage PCL to its management board, Sabeco said in a statement.
ThaiBev, which has a more than 50 percent stake in Sabeco - formally known as Saigon Beer Alcohol Beverage Corp, complained to the Vietnamese government earlier this year that its proposed board members for Sabeco had not been accepted.
However, last month, a senior financial executive at Sabeco had said that ThaiBev’s proposed members would be able to join the board and that the process had been delayed due to “complicated procedures”.
At a voting on April 23, shareholders approved the addition of ThaiBev’s representatives to the Sabeco board, the Vietnamese brewer said in the statement on Monday, confirming what a Sabeco source had told Reuters and local media reports.
One of the three newly elected board members is Singaporean Koh Poh Tiong, board director and adviser of Fraser and Neave Limited. Fraser and Neave is owned by Thai magnate Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, who also owns ThaiBev, maker of Chang beer.

China: China imports one of the highest tonnages of barley in March
|
China imported one of the highest tonnages of barley in years in March, while sorghum arrivals fell by 21 percent, customs data showed on April 23, in a sign that China’s growing trade spat with the United States is roiling grain flows, Reuters reports.
China imported 860,000 tonnes of barley in March, up 22 percent on a year ago and the third highest monthly level since at least the start of 2016.
Demand for barley, used in both animal feed and brewing, has risen since China said in early February it would investigate alleged dumping of another feed grain, sorghum, by the United States.
Sorghum imports for the month fell 21 percent year on year to 570,000 tonnes, the data showed, but were still up slightly from February’s 555,713 tonnes.
Both barley and sorghum are used as substitutes for corn in feeding livestock in China, the world’s biggest pork producer.
“People switched to barley in a concentrated way after the probe into sorghum was launched,” a China-based trader said.
“Sorghum imports were low also because prices of U.S. sorghum were not really competitive and the government here was trying to reduce huge stocks of corn,” the trader said.

Namibia: AB InBev Namibia launches beer from locally-grown pearl millet
|
The Ministry of Industrialisation, Trade and SME Development officially launched Eagle Lager, Namibia's first authentic Mahangu brew in Okahandja on 20 April, AllAfrica.com reported.
Eagle lager is a first of its kind local brew that is produced from the freshest locally harvested pearl millet, or mahangu, and is expected to penetrate the local markets fast. Operating just outside Okahandja, AB InBev Namibia is the youngest African member of the international conglomerate AB InBev which bought out SABMillers and opened its doors in Namibia in 2014.
This beer brand stems from the company's commitment to brew the highest quality beer and improve the livelihoods of the Namibian farmers, retailers, entrepreneurs and communities at large. AB InBev Namibia's ideal of 'Bringing people together for a Better World' looks at the holistic welfare of the communities in which the company operates.
Under the 'Smart Agriculture,' initiative, local farmers are taught how to apply improved farming practices which increase their yield per square metre. India: Sebi to pass final order on Vijay Mallya holding board positions in listed companies soon
|
India’s stock market regulator will soon pass a final order on whether former liquor baron Vijay Mallya can hold board positions in listed companies, which will also end the country’s largest beer maker United Breweries’ long wait for a full-time chairman, the Economic Times reported on April 25.
Mallya — who the Indian government has been trying to extradite from Britain over charges of fraud for the past few years — has been reluctant to nominate a successor or step down from the board of United Breweries (UBL), a joint venture between him and the world’s largest brewer Heineken International.
“The hearing has been concluded,” a person familiar with the development said. “Sebi is trying to come out with an order before the May deadline.” A lawyer familiar with the case said it’s highly unlikely Sebi would change its earlier stance of barring Mallya from staying on the board.
In that case, Mallya will be forced to quit United Breweries board for good and allow the company to finally have a full-time chairman.
