CHARACTERIZATION OF BEER HAZE

ABSTRACT
Several hop components have potential impact on beer haze, especially in craft beers. To analyse beer haze, a team of Dutch researchers developed a novel analytical method for beer haze profiling using a technique known as AF4-UVFLR-MALLS-dRI (untraviolet, fluorescence, multi angle laser light scattering and differential refraction-index detection). In contrast to its complex moniker, sample preparation is fast and easy. Unfortunately, the method unravels if the haze is composed of polysaccharides, proteins or polyphenol structures of certain molecular weights.

Brewery news USA: US drinkers switching from beer to harder stuff
American drinkers are abandoning beer for harder stuff, squeezing the world’s biggest brewers, The Wall Street Journal reported on May 9.

Anheuser-Busch InBev SA, Molson Coors Brewing Co. and Heineken NV all reported sharply lower U.S. beer volume in the first quarter compared with a year earlier as drinkers turn to other alcoholic beverages, such as wine or whiskey.

AB InBev said its volumes fell 4.1% in North America, partly because of weakness in the company’s core Bud and Bud Light brands. Last month, Heineken said its volumes fell by a high-single-digit percentage in a declining U.S. beer market, without being specific. And last week, Molson Coors said its U.S. sales fell 5.8%, driven by a 3.8% drop in domestic brand volumes. That sent its share price tumbling 15% in a single day, to a four-year low.

Executives blamed a much colder start to the year compared with 2017, when warmer weather drove brisk sales. Despite the volume drop, AB InBev said it raised prices and boosted revenue per hectolitre. Strong volumes in markets such as Mexico, Colombia and Argentina helped, too. Shares rose early Wednesday in Belgium, before ending the day flat.

Still, the industrywide volume declines were sharper than expected, punctuating years ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: US beer shipments forecast to decline by 1-3% this year
The Beer Institute (BI) is forecasting U.S. beer shipments to decline between one and three percent in 2018, chief economist Michael Uhrich shared during the national trade association’s “State of the Industry” webinar on May 10.

“We’ve been flat to down the last two years,” he said. “In 2018, I’m expecting the beer category’s total performance to fall between a range of down one and down three.”

Uhrich admitted that the projection is “a pretty wide range,” but that’s due to “a lot of uncertainty” and headwinds facing the industry, including tariffs, increased input costs, “falling penetration rates” with new legal-drinking-age consumers between the ages of 21 and 25, and discounting by wine and liquor companies in off-premise retail accounts.

Uhrich added that he isn’t expecting the U.S. to fall into a recession in the next two years. That’s an important prediction for beer executives because the industry typically gains about 0.25 basis points of share during a recession. However, that isn’t necessarily good for the industry, Uhrich added, noting beer typically loses about double the amount of share it gained in the years following a recession.

According to Uhrich, inflation, which is projected to be about 2.2 percent this year, is negatively affecting ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada: Beer remains Canada’s drink of choice but both domestic and import brands see volume decline last year
The Canadian love affair with hops and barley continues, but more and more drinkers are opting for the grape, Statistics Canada announced in a report on May 9.

And that’s not all — Canadians are falling head over heels for the apple too.

While beer remained the drink of choice, wine and craft ciders sales grew. In fact, all alcoholic beverage sales were up 2.3 per cent from the previous year as of March 2017, the report stated.

“Wine has become democratized or is somehow more open and inclusive,” said Nic Bird, assistant manager of Point Grey Liberty Wines store. “But at the same time, there still exists a level of sophistication.”

Beer sales accounted for C$9 billion of C$23 billion in total alcoholic sales, which mirrored the previous year.

But the volume of both Canadian and imported beers decreased, and in British Columbia the market share of total alcoholic sales was the lowest across the country, sitting at 34.4 per cent.

Yet wine sales spiked almost four per cent, amounting to roughly C$7 billion. Canadian wine sales outpaced imported wine: The former rose by nearly 7 per cent, while the latter grew almost 2 per cent, the report stated.

“Rosé sales are increasing by 50 per ...More info on site

Brewery news Thailand: Beer production in Thailand continues to decline
Beer production in Thailand continued its rate of decline at -5%, the Singapore Business Review reported on May 10.

Thailand is still not in the mood for drinking as its Office of Industrial Economics (OIE) said that beer production continued to be on a declining trend in March, signalling weak market demand. The rate of decline has continued from -19.5% YoY in February to -5.1% YoY in March.

In turn, this could hit the sales of the country's beer and spirits giant Thai Beverage. "Recovery in alcohol consumption in Thailand has been slower than expected," said RHB Research analyst Juliana Cai. "As such, we think that sales and margin in the upcoming 2Q2018 results would continue to be soft."

RHB Research's Thai analyst also observed that there was an increased number of craft beer producers in Bangkok city. "More breweries are trying to launch premium products to tap into the high-end market. We believe the increased variety of beer selection from both imported premium beers and crafted beer also contributed to the slower recovery in ThaiBev's beer segment," Cai added.

However, the analyst is more positive of a sales recovery in the third quarter, with the World Cup as a catalyst to encourage agents ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Whiskey maker Golden Blue signs exclusive deal to import and distribute Carlsberg’s lager products in Korea
Whiskey maker Golden Blue will enter Korea’s imported beer market, a diversification by the Busan-based company known for trendy low-alcohol whiskeys such as Sappirus, the Korea JoongAng Daily reported on May 9.

Golden Blue said on May 9 it signed an exclusive deal with Danish beer brand Carlsberg to import and distribute its lager products in Korea starting this month.

“The beer industry is vital for Golden Blue to surge ahead as a comprehensive liquor company,” said Kim Dong-wook, CEO of Golden Blue in a statement. “Through Carlsberg, we plan on a diverse, young marketing strategy to develop Carlsberg into a representative European beer in Korea.”

Golden Blue, which in 2009 launched whiskies with lower-than-average alcohol content, quickly became a top-tier player in Korea’s whiskey market, long dominated by imported brands.

In 2017, Golden Blue signed an MOU with traditional liquor company Omy Nara to produce its own versions of Korean liquors.

“Golden Blue wants to tackle Korea’s imported beer market, which has been showing continuous growth despite an overall decline in alcohol consumption nationwide,” the company said in a statement.

Brewery news EU: Carlsberg launches new alcohol-free beer Birell
Carlsberg Group has launched a new alcohol-free beer brand called Birell, as the company seeks to capitalise on the growing taste for alcohol-free beverages from European consumers, FoodBev.com reported on May 8.

Birell was made available to consumers in Poland and Bulgaria on May 1 in two formats, Pilsner Lager and Belgian Wit, and the brand will be introduced into new markets in 2019, according to the company.

Carlsberg says that drinks in the Birell range retain the same taste, mouthfeel and body of regular beer, and are free from artificial ingredients such as colourings and flavours.

Figures provided by the company claim that the alcohol-free beer sector has grown 90% over the last decade, and Birell has been created to offer consumers who live an active lifestyle a new option, as the drink also contains fewer calories than regular beer.

Shawn Gallegly, vice-president alcohol-free brews for Carlsberg said: “The alcohol-free category has seen huge growth in the last few years as consumers develop greater awareness of the food and drinks they purchase.

“As a result, more people are opting for alcohol-free drinks, but they don’t want their choices to be limited to water or soft drinks. They are seeking a wider range of relevant ...More info on site

Brewery news Ireland: Pernod Ricard-owned Irish Distillers acquires craft brewer Eight Degrees Brewing
Pernod Ricard-owned Irish Distillers - a supplier of spirits and wines and producer of Jameson Irish whiskey - has acquired craft brewer Eight Degrees Brewing, BeverageDaily.com reported on May 11.

The acquisition of the Mitchelstown brewery will ensure long-term beer supply to sustain the global growth of Jameson Caskmates, which is made by finishing Jameson Irish Whiskey in craft beer-seasoned barrels.

Meanwhile, Eight Degrees Brewing says the deal will give it the long-term capabilities to continue to create new and exciting beers for its customers.

Eight Degrees Brewing is the first beer in wine and spirit giant Pernod Ricard’s portfolio.

Jameson Irish Whiskey, which sold 6.5 million cases in 2017 and is available in more than 80 markets worldwide, launched Jameson Caskmates in 2014. It says this has been ‘undoubtedly one of our most successful innovations’, with 200,000 cases sold in more than 40 markets last year.

“With this success comes a need to plan for the future and that’s what led to this exciting deal with Eight Degrees Brewing,” said Tommy Keane, production director for Irish Distillers.

“We’re looking forward to working with their team to continue to grow Jameson Caskmates on the world stage from Midleton and Mitchelstown.”

Brewery news Zimbabwe: Zimbabweans worried about possible beer shortage
Social media is abuzz in Zimbabwe after the country's biggest brewer and Anheuser-Busch InBev associate unit Delta Corporation said it is running out of ingredients for the manufacture of soft drinks and alcoholic beverages, raising fears beer could run out in the next few days, Fin24 reported on May 9.

This is because Delta Corp, one of the largest companies on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange, is unable to import concentrates and other ingredients for its manufacturing lines owing to difficulties in paying foreign suppliers.

Zimbabwe is battling foreign currency shortages due to an ongoing liquidity crunch. Delta's production of the opaque Chibuku traditional brew has also been affected, and officials say they are left with only a week's supply.

Traders in Harare say some beer products have already been in short supply in the past few weeks.

They expect the situation to continue or worsen after Delta officials said ingredients had run low.

Others have blamed the government of President Emmerson Mnangagwa for the foreign payment bottlenecks companies are facing. Mnangagwa came into office in November last year after the ousting of former leader Robert Mugabe, and has pledged to turn the economy around.

“This is a catastrophe, why don't you stop manufacturing soft drinks so ...More info on site

Brewery news India & UK: United Breweries’ Vijay Mallya can be regarded as ‘fugitive from justice’, UK High Court concludes
Liquor baron Vijay Mallya, wanted in India to face charges of fraud and money laundering amounting to around Rs 9,000 crore, can be regarded as a "fugitive from justice", the UK High Court has concluded, the Economic Times reported on May 9.

Judge Andrew Henshaw, who upheld a worldwide freeze order and ruled in favour of 13 Indian state-owned banks to recover funds amounting to nearly 1.145 billion pounds in a judgment on May 8, took note of the fact that the 62-year-old businessman is contesting his extradition to India relating to "alleged financial misconduct".

"In all these circumstances, and even taking account of the fact that Dr Mallya is contesting the alleged grounds for extradition, there are grounds for regarding Dr Mallya as a fugitive from justice," the judge said as part of his ruling.

The High Court remained unconvinced by Mallya's claim that he has been a non-resident Indian (NRI) since 1988 and has lived in England since 1992, a country where he has indefinite leave to remain (ILR).

"The evidence indicates that prior to March 2016 Dr Mallya travelled fairly regularly between India and England for business and political reasons. Most of his business interests were in ...More info on site
