breeding program. They were developed from UK and continental European breeding material and
characterized with the classical flavour profiles of

have high oil and alpha contents (1.5-3ml/100g and 10-
15% alpha). Country and Jazz have lower oil and alpha
contents (0.4-1.5ml/100g and 3-7% alpha). Welcome,

Canada: Barley use expected to increase by 7% this season
|
For 2017-18, Canada’s total domestic barley use is forecast to increase by 7% to 6.298 mln tonnes with higher feed and industrial use, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in its May report.
Total barley exports are forecast to increase by 19% to 2.775 mln tonnes due to lower world barley supplies.
Canada’s barley carry-out stocks in the current season are forecast to decrease by 51% to 1.1 million tonnes and remain below the previous three and five-year averages.
The Lethbridge in-store feed barley price is forecast to increase due to the tight total barley supplies and the decline in the supply of other domestic feed grain substitutes.
The Statistics Canada March 31 Stock Report confirmed lower stocks of Canadian barley with a decrease of 26%, the bulk of the decrease was on the Prairie Provinces where farm stocks were down 29% from 2017. Overall, total Canadian barley stocks are estimated to be lower than the previous three and five-year averages. In western Canada, farm stocks decreased in all three provinces. USA: Miller Lite picks up market share and posts sales and volume growth in four weeks to May 12
|
Along with picking up market share, the Miller Lite brand posted sales and volume increases during the four weeks ending May 12, according to a post on the MillerCoors Behind the Beer blog.
The post says Miller Lite sales dollars increased 0.9 percent and volume increased 0.3 percent, citing data from Nielsen. The brand’s market share also increased 0.6 points.
“I don’t want to make too much of a four-week trend, but I’m really encouraged by the momentum we have for this brand,” said Anup Shah, vice president for the Miller family of brands. “While we have been outpacing the segment for a long time, the narrative was always that we were gaining share of a declining category. Here we’re outpacing the total industry, which is a great sign.”
The Behind the Beer blog attributed the gains to increasing volume in the dollar store and convenience store channels and outperforming the industry, despite a decline, at grocery stores.

USA, NM: Ex Novo Brewing to open new facility in Corrales
|
New Mexico’s beer scene is about to get busier. Ex Novo, a brewing company based in Oregon, is opening a 10,000 square foot facility in Corrales, KOB reported on May 24.
The founder and owner of Ex Novo, Joel Gregory, says both brewing and packaging operations will take place at the facility. There will also be a tap room for customers to enjoy. Eventually, the brewing company plans to add a full pub/restaurant, with a beer garden.
Gregory says crews will break ground on the facility in July. It will be located on Corrales Road, at the former site of Rancho de Corrales, which was destroyed in a fire in 2012. Gregory plans on opening Ex Novo's Corrales brewery in 2018.
Gregory grew up in Corrales. He says that is one of the main reasons he chose to bring his business to New Mexico. He's also excited about joining New Mexico's growing beer community.

USA, FL: Biscayne Bay Brewing to open second location in Miami
|
Biscayne Bay Brewing is opening a second location in a historic building in downtown Miami, The Real Deal reported on May 22.
The brewery, based in Doral at 8000 Northwest 25th Street, is opening a 6,200-square-foot brewery and taproom at the Old United States Post Office and Courthouse building, at 100 Northeast First Avenue. It’s slated to open this winter, according to a spokesperson.
Stambul USA, led by Daniel Peńa, paid $11 million for the building in 2014. Barrett Wolf of Wolf Co. Real Estate Brokerage and Investments represented the tenant and landlord in the 10-year lease. Stambul also redeveloped and owns Eurostars Langford hotel nearby.
Biscayne Bay will likely mark the first brewery in downtown Miami thanks to a recently passed ordinance in the city, Wolf said. The company, owned by Jose Mallea, is leasing the third floor of the courthouse building in a space that once housed the Miami Weather Bureau Office, the first national weather service.
The property, designed by Kiehnel and Elliott, and Oscar Wenderoth, was built in the early 1900s and designated historic in 1989, according to a press release. It’s across the street from WeWork’s flagship Miami location at the Security Building.

USA, MN: Rustech Brewing to be launched by couple in Monticello on May 26
|
It seems these days that the most successful way to revitalize a city’s downtown area is to add a brewery. So when longtime residents and husband and wife duo Bill and Penny Burt approached the city of Monticello last year inquiring why the zoning laws prohibited a brewery in their town, it started the ball rolling to make a change—and open Rustech Brewing, The Growler reported.
However, the story behind the brewery, which opens May 26, really begins five years prior.
“I promised my coworker, Nick Stanley [Ph.D.], that he was going to be blamed for all of this,” Bill, says with a laugh, gesturing to the brewery surrounding us. The two met at a local filtration company where they still work. Stanley, an avid homebrewer, invited Bill over to take a look and see if he could come up with a software system to assist in his brewing process. Bill was immediately on board, as he found the existing system to be quite confusing. He told Stanley, “the only thing is, if I’m going to design it for you, I’ll have to do it for myself too.” Thus began Bill’s non-stop homebrewing streak.

USA, SC: Yee-Haw Brewing Co. coming to Greenville by end of June
|
By the end of June, Yee-Haw Brewing Co. will open in Keys Court at 307 E. McBee Ave., Greenville, more than a year after the brewery from Johnson City, Tenn., was announced, the Upstate Business Journal reported on May 22.
Joe Baker, Yee-Haw partner, says the delay was mostly due to not wanting to rush the process.
“We weren’t in a hurry,” he says. “It was more important for us to get it right.”
Getting it right meant reworking the initial plans. Originally, the seven-tank brewing system was going to be located in the 4,402-square-foot taproom space closest to McBee. The smaller, 2,286-square-foot space facing the courtyard was going to be a restaurant of some sort. Cyclebar sits between the two.
The previously planned uses are now swapped, with the brewing system occupying the smaller space and the restaurant and taproom occupying the larger.
“The time taken here is to our benefit,” Baker says. “We’re providing the community with a quality experience.”
The restaurant component was the biggest change to the plans. Rather than bringing in an already established complementary concept, Yee-Haw chose to create its own restaurant they’re calling Eats at Yee-Haw that will offer a full menu of elevated bar food designed to pair

India: United Breweries launches Amstel beer in India
|
United Breweries Ltd (UBL), the maker of Kingfisher beer, on May 24 launched Amstel in India from its Dutch parent Heineken NV’s stable, to take on Carlsberg Elephant in the super-premium strong beer segment, Livemint reported.
The company will now have four beers in the super-premium beer market—two mild (Heineken and Kingfisher Ultra) and two strong (Kingfisher Ultra Max and Amstel). The target is to take UBL’s market share in the super-premium beer segment to 50% over the next two years with these four brands, the company’s marketing head Samar Singh Sheikhawat said.
The company estimates that it currently has an about 20% market share in the super-premium beer segment.
Amstel will first be available in Karnataka and Pondicherry. In the next quarter, it will be launched in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, followed by most markets in the west in the following quarter and then the north in the third quarter.
This is only the second brand from Heineken’s portfolio, apart from the Dutch company’s eponymous beer label, launched by UBL that will be bottled in India. Amstel will be brewed and bottled locally out of a brewery near Mysuru in Karnataka.

Australia: Barley prices expected to remain firm
|
Barley prices are expected to remain firm in coming months with Australian livestock producers resigned to a longer period of feeding, The West Australian reported on May 24.
WA new-season feed barley feed-grain prices hovered at A$280 a tonne this week, having rallied by more than A$20 per tonne in the past six weeks as buyers step up efforts to secure supplies.
New-season malt barley hovered at A$300 this week, up from around A$285 this time last year and A$270 last harvest.
Plum Grove executive director Tony Smith said Chinese and Australian feed demand was driving the price increase.
“Australian prices to China are not very competitive at the moment but if you get dry conditions around the country the prices will remain strong,” he said.
Mercado grain analyst Andrew Whitelaw said rumblings of a large barley plant this year had not stifled price.
Mr Whitelaw also said China and US trade tariff discussions had helped boost the attractiveness of Australian barley.
