ABSTRACT
The German Hop Research Team in Huell is introducing
two more hop varieties to the world. Although there is a
demand for new and exciting flavors from brewers, it is
also important to breed sucessors of established noble
varieties that exhibit more "grower-friendly" behaviour
with better resistances and higher yield. These two
varieties 89/25 and 96/24 possess agronomic strength
and were bred from saaz relatives. They both show
relevant noble aroma characters but have higher oil
contents compared to their ancestors of about 1.7
ml/100gr.

USA, MA: Democracy Brewing set to open its doors in Boston on the Fourth of July
|
Democracy Brewing (35 Temple Pl., Boston) is set to open its doors in Downtown Boston, and will do so on the Fourth of July. It will operate as a cooperatively-owned company where workers have a stake — and a say — in the business, the Eater Boston reported on June 22.
Democracy is working with ReThink Restaurants, a Boston-based firm that helps restaurants employ an open-book management strategy, and that they’ll be paying all of their employees at least $15 an hour to start — or, $4 more than the state’s current minimum wage. Democracy founder James Razsa told the Boston Herald he’s so invested in giving his workers a stake in the company, in part because of Boston’s history in the fight for democracy.
The brewery will employ 48 staff members at the beginning, all full-time. It was able to raise enough capital to open through a public equity offering, but Razsa told the Herald the brewery plan to buy all of the shares back within five years to ensure it’s entirely worker-owned.

USA: AB InBev bringing four draft beers by its Spanish brewer Cervezas La Virgen to the US
|
Another Anheuser-Busch InBev craft beer acquisition appears to be headed to the United States, according to labels approved by federal regulators this month, MillerCoors’ Behind the Beer blog reported on June 20.
Spanish brewer Cervezas La Virgen, which Anheuser-Busch InBev acquired in January 2017 via its New York-based ZX Ventures arm, gained approval from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau on labels for four draft beers: an IPA, a pale ale, a Helles-style lager and an amber ale.
For now, each of the beers will be imported only in 30-liter Euro kegs, per regulatory filings. A company spokesman declined to comment.
When its beers hit the U.S. market, Madrid-based Cervezas La Virgen will become the third AB InBev-acquired international craft brewery to begin selling beer in the U.S. this year, joining the Australian brand 4 Pines and Mexican import Bocanegra.
Cervezas La Virgen was founded in 2011 by three Spaniards who hatched the idea while living in San Francisco. The company now operates six taprooms and brewpubs in the Spanish capital of Madrid. USA, OH: Cartridge Brewing Co. could open next year in Maineville
|
The historic Peters Cartridge factory could be in the manufacturing business once again as early as next year, according to a hopeful small business owner, WCPO reported on June 21.
Instead of producing munitions for the U.S. military, though, Kyle Hackbarth plans to brew craft beer inside the 102-year-old facility at 1415 Grandin Road, located along the Little Miami Scenic Trail in Maineville.
"This is the once-in-a-lifetime chance to be in a historic building," Hackbarth said.
Hackbarth and his business partners named their business the Cartridge Brewing Co. to honor the history of the factory, which was built in 1916.
The Peters Cartridge Co. and later the Remington Arms Co. produced munitions in the 31,460-square-foot facility until the end of World War II. The National Park Service added the factory to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, citing its role in supporting U.S. war efforts.
After local development firm Bloomfield/Schon purchased the factory in 2014, it announced a $25 million plan to convert it into a 130-unit apartment complex with 15,000 square feet of commercial space.

Canada, ON: Bench Brewing Co. to open its Niagara Region brewery on June 29
|
Bench Brewing Co. will open their Niagara Region brewery on Friday June 29, 2018 at 3991 King Street, they have announced.
Founded in 2016 by Matt Giffen – the company has been brewing beer on a contract basis with a focus on farmhouse and sour ales.
Built around former Maple Grove public school, the 16,500 sq-ft brewery will feature a 50hl brewing system, retail store, and 80-person tap room, 85-person beer garden, 3 acres of hop yard (plus 24 aces off site), 14 foeders, and a large coolship.
“Our goal is to be stewards of our incredible location in the Twenty Valley. We will use our land to its full potential by growing our own hops, cultivating our own yeast strains, using a coolship for our wild ales and sour beers, and aging our beers in wine barrels from our neighbouring vineyards. Our beers will always be inspired and influenced by our land, which is how we will always stay true to our roots”, explains Bench Brewing.

USA, FL: Ivanhoe Park Brewing Company to hold soft opening on June 29
|
Ivanhoe Park Brewing Company is hosting a private, Inaugural Cask Tapping event on Friday, June 29, which will also be doubling as the kick-off for the new Ivanhoe Village-based brewery, the Bungalower reported on June 19.
Mayor Buddy Dyer will be in attendance, with a mallet in-hand, to tap the brewery’s very first cask, named “Buddy’s Iconic Brown Ale.” The beer is a “smooth brew” made with orange zest and local honey.
The brewery will have two of its beers as well as some other Central Florida beers on tap and the brewery’s owner as well as brewmaster will be leading guided tours of the brewery.
They will soft open Friday at 4 p.m. and close 10 p.m. that day. Saturday and Sunday they will be open noon to 8 p.m. Then from there, Thursday and Friday, 4-10 p.m, Saturday and Sunday noon to 8 p.m., until an as-of-yet unannounced grand opening, further down the line.

USA, FL: Ceremony Brewing might come to downtown Bonita Springs soon
|
A new brewery might come to downtown Bonita Springs, joining other projects in the works, such as apartments and added retail space.
Ceremony Brewing is interested in the café building attached to the Everglades Wonder Gardens. Once home to the Twisted Tangle Café, the building has sat empty for months, the Naples Daily News reported on June 20.
Ceremony will be a new twist on local craft breweries, said its founder Zachary Smith. The taps will feature beer from other local breweries for patrons to enjoy.
Unique beers from across the world also will be for sale.
“It’s like a locally owned mom and pop craft beer boutique,” Smith said. “It will be the (ABC Fine Wine and Spirits) of beer with a local atmosphere.”
Crafting unique beer will be a core part of Ceremony Brewing, although it will be at a smaller scale than other nearby operations like Momentum Brewhouse. Smith wants a homebrew-style operation based on Smith’s extensive background in the hobby.
Smith said the business could be running by the end of the year if everything goes smoothly.

USA, OH: Wiedemann Brewing Co. to reopen in Greater Cincinnati area
|
Greater Cincinnati is about to get another brewery, and it’s a name some may know well. Wiedemann Brewing Co. closed in 1983 after more than a century in operation in Newport. Locals Jon and Betsy Newberry bought the rights to the name in 2012 and planned on reopening again in Northern Kentucky. The financing for those plans for that fell through, but the couple pushed on and found a space in Saint Bernard, investors and loans, the Cincinnati CityBeat reported on June 21.
On June 26, Wiedemann will open again on Vine Street in a historic former funeral home.
“We hope Wiedemann can help bring back the fun and community spirit that has been a big part of Cincinnati’s neighborhood taverns and beer culture for so many decades," says Jon Newberry in a press release. "We’re brewing some of the tastiest craft brews in town, and we welcome beer lovers of all ages to get together in friendly downtown Saint Bernard.”
In addition to "innovative, tasty and refreshing" beers crafted by brewers Steve Shaw and Austin Smith, the brewery will also have a full kitchen, serving sandwiches, sausages and appetizers for lunch, dinner and late-night.

USA, OK: Broken Arrow Brewing Company officially opens its doors

Broken Arrow Brewing Company officially opened doors on Father's Day, making it the first brewery in Broken Arrow, kjrh.com reported on June 17.
The Broken Arrow Brewing Company puts creative twists on the beer they sell, with the Broken Arrow Brown, Rose District IPA, and the Hader-weizen, their beer named after SNL comedian and Tulsa native, Bill Hader.
They want their love for Broken Arrow to flow through their business.
Owner Austin Ferguson felt it was perfect to open on Father's Day. His partner and father-in-law, Bud, inspired his brewing hobby years ago, which is now their own business.
"A year ago we were sitting in this room in a hole in the floor saying one day we’ll be able to brew and sell beer and now that it’s here it’s just unbelievable," said Ferguson.
They welcomed well over a hundred people on their grand opening day.

USA, MI: Presidential Brewing Co. plans to open this fall in Portage
|
A new brewpub in the works could be the first of many new brewing enterprises in Portage after the city updated an ordinance officials hope will encourage more to open, MLive.com reported on June 18.
Presidential Brewing Co. is the brainchild of husband and wife Jake and Kayleigh Lohse of Portage. After years of experimenting with making beers and planning, the couple recently signed a lease for their new location at 8302 Portage Road, with plans to open this fall.
Business plans progressed after Portage city officials made changes updating the city ordinance to allow smaller brewing operations with fewer requirements.
The updated ordinance allows establishments like Presidential Brewing Co. to move into areas where they would not have been permitted under the previous ordinance, established in 2003. It also loosens requirements for serving food.
Under the previous ordinance, microbreweries and brewpubs were allowed as a special land use in the General Business District, B-3. Those zones in Portage include existing businesses along portions of Westnedge Avenue and Portage Road, among other areas, and extends as a permitted use in the City Center Area District.

India: Enforcement Directorate rejects lenders plea to sell United Breweries shares worth RS2,000 crore
|
Dealing a blow to banks’ efforts to recover money from fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya, the Enforcement Directorate has rejected their plea to sell shares worth Rs 2,000 crore in United Breweries, two people aware of the development said. Dutch brewer Heineken is keen on buying the shares to strengthen its holding of the Indian beer market leader, the Economic Times reported on June 22.
Banks had sought release of the shares attached by the Enforcement Directorate but they have declined the request, said a bank official aware of the matter. “The share prices will keep on coming down. If we sell at a later date with a huge discount, then who is to be held responsible? Will the ED take responsibility,” the official asked.
State Bank of India, in a letter to the ED, had requested that it be allowed to sell the United Breweries shares pledged to the lender as surety against the loans taken by Mallya. It had offered to keep the proceeds in an escrow account until a final decision was made on where the money would go to. UK: Heineken buys minority stake in London’s Beavertown Brewery
|
Heineken has gobbled up a slice of London’s Beavertown Brewery in the latest move by a large brewer to tap into rising consumer interest in craft beers, the Financial Times reported on June 21.
The Dutch company’s investment in a minority stake “gives Beavertown the £40m …funding injection” needed to sharply increase its output, the craft brewer said.
A Beavertown spokesperson declined to comment on how large a portion of the group Heineken had purchased, except to say “it is a minority stake, so we retain total control and freedom to do our own thing.”
The investment will help Beavertown fund the building of a new, much larger, brewing facility called Beaverworld. With the new facility, Beavertown said it will have “enough capacity to get our beer on to every street corner in the UK and beyond.”
Beavertown said Beaverworld will create 150 new jobs.
Heineken forged a similar path with Lagunitas Brewing Company, a Californian brewer. It bought half the company in 2015, and followed up last year by purchasing all remaining shares.

New Zealand: New Zealanders drinking more low and zero alcohol beer options

New Zealanders are drinking more low and zero alcohol beer options while out on the town, Stuff.co.nz reported on June 22.
The fifth most popular tap beer from Lion Breweries was its Speights Mid, with 2.5 per cent alcohol content.
Aucklander Catlin McIlhagga, the general manager of 95bFM, chose to stop drinking a few years ago.
"I didn't want to drink alcohol anymore but the whole social thing of having a beer is still nice," she said.
McIlhagga said she hasn't faced any negative feedback for her choice, though going out could still present a challenge.
"Zero alcohol beers are really hard to find in bars and I would rather not pay NZ$14 for a mocktail.
"I mean, it's nice but I thought alcohol was supposed to be the expensive bit so what am I paying for?"
She has found supermarkets and liquor stores offering an increasing number of options, including some "that weren't terrible".
Figures released by Stats NZ show a flattening of the overall availability of low alcohol options in 2017, after a massive spike over the previous three years.
In 2013, there was around 3.36 million litres of low-alcohol beer, doubling to 7.86 million litres in 2017.

Indonesia: Head of Jakarta Legislative Council proposes to close down Delta Djakarta beer company
|
Head of the Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD) Prasetyo Edi Marsudi was against the Jakarta administration`s decision to divest its shares in the city`s beer company Delta Djakarta and proposed a new one, the Tempo reported on June 22.
“It would be better if it were closed entirely, that would be wise, so there would be no more beer in Jakarta,” said Prasteyo at his office in Central Jakarta on Thursday, June 21.
Prasetyo likened Delta Djakarta with spoils of war and preached that taking money from the sales of a beer company is more sinful than the direct consumers who drink the beer.
The Jakarta Administration officially announced that it has let go of its 26.25 percent shares in the beer company. Delta Djakarta also produces other products such as Anker, San Miguel, Kuda Putih, and Carlsberg.
This divestment was promised by Jakarta Governor and Deputy Governor Anies Baswedan and Sandiaga Uno during the pair’s Gubernatorial Election campaign last year.

Ireland: Diageo announces price hike for its beers in Ireland
|
The price of Diageo drinks is set to rise, the Newstalk reported on June 20.
The company has confirmed it has recently written to all its customers - including publicans, wholesalers and retailers - to advise them of changes to their price list for beers in Ireland.
This includes an increase in draught beer of 4c per pint, excluding VAT, to publicans and a similar increase for packaged beer to retailers
The firm says this is due to the "rising costs in doing business in Ireland".
Diageo says: "This increase is in line with current inflation trends and it is necessary to ensure we can continue to make significant investments in our business and in the wider hospitality sector."
The move is likely to impact Guinness, Smithwicks, Hop House, Carlsberg and Budweiser both in pubs and through the off licence trade.
They announced a similar increase last year, the first in five years.
The 4c increase comes before VAT, which could see 5c added to the price of a pint.
The increases are set to come into effect from July 2nd.

Budweiser has overtaken Foster’s to become Britain’s second-biggest beer brand, The Grocer reported on June 21.
Supermarket value sales of the AB InBev brand (not including its spin-off Bud Light or its alcohol-free Prohibition Brew) have surged by £17.5 mln to £381.7 mln.
Including Bud Light, which has pulled in £30.5 mln in extra sales this year, and Prohibition, this figure rises to an eye-watering £418.4 mln - a 13.3% rise year on year. In fact, Bud Light was the best-performing lager SKU in the supermarkets this year [Nielsen 52 w/e 21 April 2018].
Foster’s, meanwhile, has had 11% of its value wiped away, falling to £354.2 mln. Its standard lager has lost £31.8 mln (8.4%) while its Gold variant has lost £11.4 mln, more than two thirds (68.3%) of its value.
Budweiser’s growth had been “phenomenal”, said the brand’s UK marketing manager Rowan Chidgey. “Its performance has been driven by its affiliation to key sporting events and cultural moments this year.”
Toby Lancaster, category and shopper marketing director at Foster’s owner Heineken UK, said Heineken expected a “much stronger” performance from the brand over the coming year, with plans to introduce new on-pack promotions offering shoppers the chance to win prizes.

Kenya: Royal Unibrew adds medium strength beer Faxe Gold to its Kenyan portfolio

Danish beverage firm Royal Unibrew has expanded its Kenya portfolio with introduction of a medium strength beer Faxe Gold, upping the competition for its rivals, the Business Daily reported on June 21.
The new 5.5 per cent alcohol content beer will be available in 330-mililitre bottles and 500-millilitre cans.
It adds to the Faxe 10 per cent and Faxe Stout 7.7 per cent beers already in the Kenyan market.
“The product will complement the already existing beer. Faxe Gold is an easy everyday lager beer,” said Nicolas Baroutis, commercial director Africa for Royal Unibrew.
The beer, imported and distributed by Patiala Distillers, will take on other premium brands in the market with an alcohol volume of between four per cent and five per cent as the Faxe brand has been mainly in the strong beer category.
Kenya in one of the three African countries alongside Burkina Faso and Ghana that will see the introduction of the new product.
“Kenya is a big market and the consumer knows and enjoys beer. It is one of our focus countries in Africa,” said Mr Baroutis. The Danish company is banking on the popularity and consumption in the category to grow its market share.

Australia: Lion launching full strength version of Iron Jack beer

Australia’s Lion is building on its hugely successful launch of Iron Jack, with the launch of a full strength version of the beer, The Shout reported on June 20.
The launch of the mid strength Iron Jack in 2017, was lauded as the most successful beer launch in a decade, after selling over 16 million litres in its first eight months.
Lion’s Contemporary Portfolio Manager, Amy Darvill said: “Iron Jack is a brand inspired by Australia’s legendary outdoorsmen and the traditional values they portray like loyalty, strength and generosity.
“It’s about recognising that the role of the modern Aussie male is evolving, but those old school traits are still as important now as they used to be.”
Iron Jack Full Strength Lager will be 4.2 per cent ABV and features pale malts with a “light dose” of Saaz hops. The beer is preservative free and has 30 per cent fewer carbs than regular full strength beers.
The launch of Iron Jack Full Strength will be supported by a new brand campaign and TVC set to launch later in 2018 and it will be available from July 16 in 330ml bottles, 375ml cans and on tap at selected outlets nationally.
