USA: Constellation Brands banking on popularity of Mexican beer
|
Cravings for Mexican beer continue to grow at a fast pace in the U.S., while the taste for domestic beers lags. Sales of imports increased 8.4% last year, driven by Mexican beers, which represented about 70% of sales of imported beer, according to data from IRI Worldwide. Nine Mexican beer brands ranked in the U.S. Top 54 by sales, the Motley Fool reported on August 31.
Domestic premium beers like Bud, Coors, and Miller still dominate, with about 40% of sales in the U.S. market. But the premium brands saw sales in dollars erode by 2.9% in 2017, according to information from IRI.
Craft beers and domestic ultra-premiums like Michelob Ultra are attracting consumers, with revenue up 5.6% and 11.3% respectively in 2017. But with IRI data showing craft beers holding 12% of the U.S. market and ultra-premiums 7%, it takes both to roughly equal the sales power of imports.
Constellation Brands sells some of the top-selling Mexican beers in America and isn't content to simply ride the wave of popularity. The company continues to look for new ways to grow.

Brazil: Heineken’s brewery in Brazil’s north-east subject of land dispute
|
The rights to spring water supplying an important Heineken plant in Brazil’s north-east are the subject of a legal dispute, in a case being closely watched by foreign investors in Latin America’s largest country, the Financial Times reported on August 31.
A local businessman, Maurício Brito Marcelino da Silva, is fighting a court battle with the government for the rights to mineral resources at the plant site in Alagoinhas, Bahia state, including the spring being used by Heineken.
“They [Heineken] will have to stop the factory or, if they want to continue using the water, they’ll have to sit down with Mauricio,” said a lawyer for the businessman on the court decision.
Heineken said it was not a party to the case and the dispute would not affect its operations in Alagoinhas.
Heineken bought the Bahia plant early last year as part of its $700 mln acquisition of the Brazilian operations of Japan’s Kirin, a deal that was seen as a vote of confidence in Brazil as it struggled to emerge from recession.

Japan: Major brewers innovating in ‘colour-free’ beers
|
Japan’s major beer manufacturers have innovated a selection of beer drinks and alcohol-free beer to be ‘colour-free’, the Drinks Insight Network reported on August 31.
These innovations present a significant visual impact and certainly catch the interest of inquisitive Japanese consumers. However, is “colour-free” really right for these products?
Early movers include Asahi Breweries with Asahi Clear Craft, which it made available via selected Asahi-owned bars in a marketing trial. The drink is a transparent colourless happoshu – and happoshu is a beer-related tax category of sparkling low-malt beverage. It’s similar to conventional beer but does not follow the traditional beer recipe of having high malt content.
Suntory’s All-Free All-Time – also an early mover – is a new clear-colour alcohol-free beer. It has been launched as a line extension of Suntory All-Free, which is Suntory’s core alcohol-free beer brand. The drink not only has the interesting colourless visual, but it also comes in a PET plastic bottle which is unusual in the alcohol-free beer category. Similar to its sister All-Free branded products, this new beverage also contains no calories or carbohydrates – so it is in the realms of beer-flavoured carbonated water. World: Heineken successfully places EUR600 mln of 8.5 year notes
|
Heineken NV, the world's second-largest beer-maker, has announced that it has successfully placed €600 million of 8.5-year notes with a coupon of 1.25% and €650 million of 12.5-year notes with a coupon of 1.75%.
The notes will be issued under the company's Euro Medium Term Note Programme and will be listed on the Luxembourg Stock Exchange.
The proceeds from the notes issuance will be used for general corporate purposes, which may include repayment of indebtedness and/or acquisitions.
The maturity dates of the notes are 17 March 2027 and 17 March 2031.
Deutsche Bank, ING, JPM, MUFG and Société Générale acted as book runners, and ABN AMRO, ANZ, Rabobank, BBVA, Raiffeisen Bank International, Santander and Banca IMI as co-managers.
In July of this year, the beer-maker cut its full-year margin forecasts due to currency weakness in some more profitable markets and expansion in Brazil.

Singapore: ThaiBev earns title of world’s ‘cheapest alcohol name’
|
Thai Beverage pcl (ThaiBev) has earned the title of the world’s “cheapest alcohol name” at Goldman Sachs, as the Bangkok-based brewer is now the worst performer in its consumer stocks coverage, the Malaysian Reserve reported on September 4.
And analysts led by June Zhu said a turnaround in its operations in the financial year 2019 (FY19) will give the stock a nice lift.
Since losing S$6.9 billion (RM20.65 billion) this year, ThaiBev now trades at 15.3 times of future earnings — below its 10-year average — while the MSCI World Beverages Index trades at 19.9 times, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
“The stock has reached its bottom, both on earnings and valuation,” June Zhu and Manik Mahajan, analysts at Goldman Sachs (Singapore) Pte Ltd wrote in a report last week.
“FY19 will mark the start of the turnaround” due to forecast improvements in farm incomes, wages and election spending. Shares of ThaiBev closed 4% higher, the biggest gain in almost two months on higher than the three-month average volume.
The company’s management is anticipating that higher agricultural income in Thailand and a strategy to replace short-term debt with long-term loans will improve finances next year.

Canada: Barley production could jump 1.3% this year - survey
|
Statistics Canada’s July crop production survey sees rising production of barley this year but declines for canola, wheat, soybeans, corn and oats.
The survey of over 13,000 farmers found Canola production is expected to decline by 10 percent and all wheat production over 3 percent.
Neil Townsend is senior market analyst with Farmlink Marketing Solutions.
He says the survey is somewhat out of date because there has been hot dry weather since July.
Canola production will fall 2 million tons due to a smaller acreage and lower yields.
Total wheat production according to the July survey will be 29 million tonnes down from 30 million in 2017.
Spring wheat will drop almost 3 percent while durum will jump 1.34 percent.
Barley will jump 1.3 percent to almost 8 million tons.
Townsend says harvest on the prairies is going well with high quality crops and no big surprises in yield.
