Barley news Canada: Rains arrive at worst possible time for Canada’s malting barley harvest
After a summer of dry conditions and intense heat, which took its toll on barley yields, September arrived and unfortunately so did the rain. The long awaited moisture that would have benefitted the crops in early August has arrived at the worst possible time for the Prairie harvest. This wet weather has bogged down harvest and the forecast for the next two weeks is for continued rain, which will affect the unharvested barley. The concern is that the standing barley will be subject to chitting and sprouting, and regrettably a large percentage of the unharvested barley will probably become feed grade, CMBTC reported on September 13. It is hard to determine at this time the exact amount of barley that has been harvested. Based on provincial crop reports and discussions with producers it is likely that about 50% of the Prairie barley has been harvested and that the quality of this barley is above average with the exception of southern Alberta. Harvesting the remaining 50% will likely be a dreadfully slow process and the maltsters and commercial companies will have to wait for it to be completed before they can evaluate samples submitted to see how much of the crop ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CT: Trillium Brewing’s Connecticut location officially in the works
Another Trillium Brewing location is officially in the works — but this one will require a bit of a drive, Boston.com reported on September 12.

The Boston-born company has plans to open a farmhouse brewery in Connecticut, according to a blog post published last week by the company’s co-owners, Esther and JC Tetreault. The husband-and-wife duo announced that they bought “a beautiful farm” in North Stonington this summer, one that’s less than a two-hour drive from Trillium’s two Massachusetts breweries in Fort Point and Canton. They’re hoping to use the property to achieve one of their “biggest goals”: the Trillium Farm and Brewery.

“Our intention is to brew estate-grown beers, establish an agriculture program to feed our restaurant and breweries, and create a destination for you to share experiences with us, family, and friends,” the Tetreaults wrote.

Jonathan Tompkins, the brewery’s director of marketing, says the draw of the Connecticut farm and brewery will be to provide customers with “a unique experience both in beer and food, set in a beautiful pastoral landscape.”

“The natural beauty of North Stonington is picture perfect, and the area is steeped in agricultural history, which together create a perfect sanctuary away from everyday life,” Tompkins told Boston.com in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Ursa Minor Brewing to open in Duluth by the end of September
Ursa Minor Brewing will open by the end of the month, the Duluth brewery announced on September 12.

The brewery, run by brothers Ben and Mark Hugus, will open its blue-painted taproom and production facility at 2415 W. Superior St. in Lincoln Park at noon on Sept. 26. The renovated space features a wood-fired pizza oven and outdoor seating.

Ursa Minor will be open at noon Tuesdays through Sundays and close at 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 8 p.m. on Sundays.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Sod Buster Brewing launches its first two beers
The Chatham Daily News reports that a new brewing company founded by a local resident has launched its first two beers.

Sod Buster Brewing has been founded by Michael Noltie of Dresden, a small community in the municipality of Chatham-Kent in Southwestern Ontario.

Named after an old term for farming that Noltie’s father used as a citizen’s band radio handle when he was young, Sod Buster debuted in late June with Straw Bale Blond Ale (4.5% abv) and Broken Pasture Dark Ale (5% abv), both of which are available at bars, restaurants, and local events in the area.

Sod Buster beers are currently being brewed under contract at Forked River Brewing in London, although Noltie hopes to open a small brewery in Dresden in the future.

Brewery news USA, NY: Kelsey Grammer opening new brewery in upstate New York soon
Kelsey Grammer will likely open an upstate New York brewery soon, NYup.com reports. The Faith American Brewing Company LLC acquired a wholesale license under his fourth wife Kayte's name.

Though that type of license lends itself to Grammer wholesaling and marketing someone else's beer (something he's done in the past through the same LLC), he does also have a pending "summer tavern wine" license for a nearby location. The first license took effect early last month and will expire on July 31 of next year.

According to Esquire.com, Kelsey began talking about this particular dream of his back in 2016. The town — Margaretville, New York — is "[his] favorite place in the world" that he spent time in as a kid and in 2017 he told Kelly and Ryan about always wanting to return there.

Brewery news USA, GA: Reformation Brewery opens new location in downtown Woodstock
Reformation Brewery has reformed.

It opened a new location in downtown Woodstock that offers a beer garden and a venue for beer events, MyAJC reported on September 10.

The move to 105 Elm St., about a mile from the Cobb-Cherokee County line, comes after about five years of brewing.

It has space for research and development. There are also two public bars for serving suds.

The five-barrel brewhouse is located in a 6,000-square-foot building behind Reel Seafood, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has previously reported. Their former location was a mile east and out of the revitalized downtown area.

Barley news Australia: Barley exports down 54% in July
Australia’s exports of malting and feed barley in July totalled 255,048 tonnes, down 54 per cent from 553,742 tonnes in June, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Trade sources expect August barley exports will be down even further, as shipments from Western and South Australian ports continue to make their way to Brisbane and Newcastle.

These ports are jointly unloading an estimated 200,000 tonnes per month of wheat and barley in total from southern ports to supply drought-hit end-users in southern Queensland and northern New South Wales.

Brewery news The Philippines: San Miguel confident of investors’ interest in $2.7 bln stake in its food and beverage unit
San Miguel Corp. (SMC) said it was confident of attracting investors to buy up to a $2.7-billion stake in its food and beverage unit, the Philippines’ biggest secondary share offering.

The sale of up to 1.02 billion shares in San Miguel Food and Beverage, Inc. is part of the parent firm’s asset restructuring plan announced last year.

The feedback from investor roadshows in Asia, Europe and the United States has been positive, San Miguel Corp President Ramon Ang said after the subsidiary’s shareholder meeting in Manila.

“Investors want a stable company with stable cash flow, with big market shares in the food and beverage category,” Ang told reporters.

“We are confident we can place out the shares” despite recent volatility in the Philippines’ equities market, he added.

Philippine shares fell for a sixth straight session on Wednesday as investors worried over US-China trade tensions.

Manila’s main index is down more than 12 percent this year, the worst-performing bourse in Southeast Asia.

San Miguel Food and Beverage has set a date of Oct. 23-29 for the share sale, pending regulatory approval. Final pricing is set for Oct. 19.

San Miguel intends to use fresh capital from the share sale for infrastructure projects, including a proposed $15-billion airport complex north ...More info on site

Brewery news Ghana: Guinness Ghana invests $10 mln in new PET line to meet increased demand
Guinness Ghana Breweries Ltd. (GGBL) says it has invested an amount of $10 million to meet increased consumer demands, Myjoyonline.com reported on September 12.

According to the company, the investment has gone into the acquisition of a new PET line - a 60,000 bottles per hour equipment.

Speaking to JoyBusiness at the commissioning of the PET line at its premises in Achimota on September 12, the Supply Chain Director of GGBL, Isaac Tosu said, the equipment is “to produce Malta Guinness, Alvaro and Origin Zero in a plastic format.” The Supply Chain Director of GGBL, Isaac Tosu, has said speaking to JoyBusiness at the commissioning of the project at the company’s premises in Achimota.

Mr Tosu said the project also seeks to create jobs for the youth.

With regards to increasing its market share, the company says one of its products, the Malta Guinness, is a flagship brand for them and because of its quality credentials and the customer loyalty with the brand, the company is not able to meet demand.

Mr Tosu is hopeful that the emergence of the new PET line will cement the company’s position as market leaders in the non-alcoholic beer category. He said the company seeks to sell whatever ...More info on site
