Barley news Canada: Unharvested barley acres to dash farmers’ hopes of having their barley accepted as malting
Harvest progress over the past three weeks has been painfully slow in Western Canada. The weather has been abysmal. Snowfall, frost, and rainy wet conditions have made harvest a nightmare. Farmers in all three provinces have been stymied by the inclement weather conditions which in many areas prevented them from entering their fields, CMBTC reported on October 17. The unharvested barley acres, which have been subject to relentless wet conditions, will certainly dash the hopes of many famers of having their barley accepted as malt barley. With the outlook for warmer, dry conditions over the next week, there is always hope that some of the late seeded barley that is still standing could meet malt specifications, however the reality is that most of the unharvested barley will be downgraded into the feed category. The wet conditions certainly reduced the amount of available malt barley that will be offered to the export market. Prior to the rain and snow, it was estimated there would be 3.5 million tonnes of malt barley available for the domestic and export market. Now we will have to wait for the final number when harvest is complete, but there is no doubt that the crop ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada & USA: Canada drops US-made aluminium-can tariff
Canada's move to drop a 10 percent duty on U.S.-made aluminium cans is good news for Canadian beer makers battling a shortage of tall cans, according to brewing industry executives, Reuters reported on October 18.

The aluminium products excluded from tariffs last week include cans that brewers have been struggling to keep in stock, said Luke Harford, president of trade association Beer Canada. Reuters reported in July that some Canadian breweries were scrambling to find aluminium cans.

"It's very positive for us," said Harford. "The 473 ml tall cans are all purchased from U.S. suppliers and that particular can is one of the fastest-growing cans... particularly amongst small brewers."

Canada announced tariff exemptions on a range a products last week after the domestic industry complained of shortages that could affect production of everything from cars to beer. The rollback underscores the unintended consequences of retaliatory tariffs.

The Canadian tariffs on cans were part of its response to U.S. President Donald Trump's steel and aluminium tariffs. But they hit a product already in short supply after the closure of a Crown Holdings Inc plant in Massachusetts in January.

At least one small brewery, Alberta's GP Brewing Co, was forced to halt production for two weeks in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Drake’s Brewing Co. getting ready to open its doors in San Leandro
The west bank of the Sacramento River is about to get a whole lot sudsier. Two years after announcing its forthcoming West Sacramento pizza restaurant and beer garden, Drake’s Brewing Co. is set to open its doors at The Barn in San Leandro on Wednesday, Oct. 24, the Sactown Magazine reported.

A collaboration between The Barn and San Leandro-based Drake’s, the 2-acre space is anchored by the swooping cedar-shingled pavilion designed by Dutch architect Jerry van Eyck, and will feature a 30,000-square-foot lawn (more on that later) and a 400-seat open-air biergarten. The bar will boast 50 taps pouring popular Drake’s mainstays like the signature Best Coast IPA and the boozy Denogginizer Double IPA, along with guest brews and new specialty releases, including 30 Motels, a reference to a West Sacramento billboard that Drake’s co-owner John Martin passes by on his commute into the city.

For the restaurant portion, dubbed PizzaSmith, Drake’s executive chef Taylor Smith will offer a menu of thin-crust pizzas—like the Eb, with pickled pineapple, sausage, jalapeńos and sriracha, and the 89, with pepperoni, shaved red onion and pickled goat-horn peppers—similar to those served at Drake's Oakland restaurant, Drake's Dealership. (Produce for the eatery will be harvested from ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NE: NWY 14 Brewing Company planning launch on Saturday, October 27
What first began as a beer brewing hobby has become a full-fledged business endeavor for Boone County natives Greg and Mandy Luettel, who have plans to open HWY 14 Brewing Company in Albion on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018, Albionnewsonlinen reported.

The brewery will be located at 134 S. 4th Street in downtown Albion.

The couple originally started renovations on the building in March of this year.

While construction and licensing has taken a little longer than expected, the Luettels said they are very excited to open.

Over the past few years, the couple said they’ve noticed a craft beer and brewery trend throughout Omaha, Lincoln, and other rural areas. They decided to take the leap to pursue their dream of opening a brewery.

Through this journey, they hope to offer additional jobs and another form of entertainment to the place where they both grew up.

As first-time business owners, the Luettels said the experience has definitely been a learning process.

Greg, who has a biology degree and has worked in lab settings for a number of years prior to transitioning into a sales-oriented role, said he’s extremely excited for the opportunity to make a living using both his skills and passion.

Greg and long-time friend Matt Temme came ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Envy Brewing aiming at opening later this year in Fort Collins
Brian Connery’s brewing career has taken him all over the country.

He brewed at Delaware's Dogfish Head Brewery during its largest growth period. He’s worked at breweries in Las Vegas and San Francisco. In Colorado, he’s brewed at Fort Collins’ New Belgium Brewing, Boulder Beer Co., Aurora’s Dad & Dudes Breweria, Colorado Springs’ Il Vicino and most recently at Denver’s Lost Highway Brewing.

Now, Connery is helping build a new brewpub in Fort Collins from the ground up — Envy Brewing plans to open by the end of the year out of a portion of the Peloton Cycles at 3027 E. Harmony Road, The Coloradoan reported on October 18.

‘I’m someone who likes a challenge in my life,” Connery said. “You put in your heart and more of yourself when you are building something from scratch.”

Connery provides plenty of experience to Envy, which has been about seven years in the works. He joins business partners Erik Schmidt, Joe Morgan and Dana Hood.

“His expertise will be worth every penny,” Schmidt said. “You can’t open with bad beer, and with (Connery) we will be able to get open as soon as we are able.”

Envy will focus on collaboration beers, with plans to partner with other ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OK: Hold Fast Brewing slated to open in summer of 2019
A new brewery is slated to open in summer of 2019, in an old fire station near Springfield's Shrine Mosque and down the street from Hammons Field, the Springfield News-Leader reported.

Hold Fast Brewing is owned by sisters Carol and Susan McLeod. They have big dreams for the red brick building, involving a taproom, a private event space and potentially even a rooftop bar.

Hold Fast will be Springfield's first all-women owned brewery. Carol McLeod said there are probably less than 100 breweries nationwide that exclusively have women as their owners and head brewers.

The McLeod sisters began thinking about opening up their own brewery in 2014, after their dad passed away unexpectedly.

"Life is too short and we should pursue something we love," Susan McLeod said was their thinking then.

Hold Fast Brewing is a family affair. Another McLeod sister, who runs an accounting firm in California, is the chief financial officer. A brother, who practices law in St. Louis, will help handle legal matters. Their mom, Jan, will be in charge of brewery swag — T-shirts, hats and other paraphernalia.

"She's 72 and she has one of the best beer T-shirt collections around," Carol McLeod said of her mom.

The brewery's name is a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Constellation Brands CEO Rob Sands to step down
Rob Sands, the CEO of Corona maker Constellation Brands, is stepping down. He will hand over the reins to the company's president and chief operating officer, Bill Newlands, in March, the company said on October 17.

Sands, who spent more than a decade as president and CEO of Constellation Brands, said Newlands "has made a significant impact" on the company since he joined in 2015.

"Bill understands what it takes to succeed in this rapidly evolving market and he's the right person to lead our company going forward," he added.

Once Newlands becomes CEO, Sands will become Constellation Brands' executive chair, replacing his brother Richard Sands. Richard Sands will become executive vice chair.

Constellation Brands, which also owns SVEDKA vodka and Casa Noble tequila, made a number of profitable decision with Sands at the helm.

In 2013, the company acquired Grupo Modelo's US beer business, including Corona and Modelo. Sands also expanded the company's liquor and spirits portfolio, and sold off underperforming international brands. Over the past five years, the company's stock has soared by more than 255%.

Most recently, the company made a huge bet on the cannabis industry.

In August, Constellation Brands spent $4 billion bet to boost its stake in cannabis company Canopy Growth.

Barley news Ireland: Seed companies and merchants report massive increase in winter barley area
A massive increase in the area of winter barley planted has been reported by seed companies and merchants in Ireland, Independent.ie reported on October 17.

However, a shortage of seed for oats, particularly for the spring crop, could hit the total area of that crop.

Industry sources estimate that the area of winter barley planted is likely to top 70,000 ha for the first time since 2016, and could reach the 75,000 ha mark.

This represents a 25-30pc jump in the area sown last year. Around 74,000 ha of winter barley were planted for the 2016 harvest, but this fell to 64,000 ha for the 2017 crop, and to 56,000 ha for this year's harvest.

Donal Fitzgerald of Goldcrop attributed the lift in the winter barley acreage to the excellent sowing conditions of late, the poor spring barley harvest this year, the fact that barley is priced the same as wheat, and the better straw returns which the winter barley crop delivers.

"Sowing conditions have been brilliant. The early harvest helped, and we've had really good weather since," he said.

Mr Fitzgerald said lively farmer demand for straw, and the expectation that the market would remain strong, was also influencing planting decisions.

He said that the straw ...More info on site
