Brewery news USA: Brewers Association alters official craft brewer definition
The Brewers Association board of directors on October 30 informed members of proposed changes to its bylaws that would significantly alter the trade organization’s official craft brewer definition, and create a new voting member class, Brewbound has learned.

The board also intends to form a political action committee that is aimed at more aggressively lobbying for permanent federal excise tax cuts that currently save craft brewers upwards of $80 million annually.

In an email to BA members, Left Hand Brewing founder Eric Wallace, who also serves as the chair of the BA board, said the organization is considering dropping the “traditional” requirement from the group’s three-pronged definition.

According to the BA’s current definition, which has changed three times since 2007, a craft brewer must be small (less than 6 million barrels), independent (less than 25 percent owned by a non-craft brewer), and traditional (a majority of its total volume must be derived from traditional or innovative brewing ingredients).

It’s the last pillar, traditional, that is under review, in part because an increasing number of craft brewers are already experimenting with non-traditional beer offerings such as flavored malt beverages and hard seltzers. A growing number of BA members have also expressed interest in creating beverages ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Talking Cursive Brewing Co to launch early next year in Syracuse
It's got a slightly off-kilter name, plans for some out-of-the-ordinary beers and what appears to be a pretty good location.

When it opens early next year, Talking Cursive Brewing Co. will become at least the 11th beer-making business operating within the city limits of Syracuse. (That's if a different one doesn't open sooner), syracuse.com reported on October 29.

It will bring the total number of breweries in Onondaga County to more than 20.

The brewery and tap room will take a space in the Creekwalk Commons, at 301 Erie Blvd. W. That's next to a Cafe Kubal location and across the street from the iconic National Grid (Niagara Mohawk) building.

Co-owner and brewer Andrew Brooks is hoping to open in early February, in time for the annual Syracuse Winterfest downtown. The exact date is still uncertain.

Brooks, of Manlius, will operate Talking Cursive with his wife, Patricia, and business partner, Susan Kimmell of Constantia.

It will start with 15 taps - serving both its own and "guest" beers, plus other New York craft beverages. There will also be a small kitchen serving a limited food menu - baked potatoes, ale-braised hot dogs, charcuterie plates etc.

The brewhouse will be capable of making 7-barrel batches - that's about ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Central Machine Works Brewery and Beer Hall coming to Govalle in spring of 2019
Govalle is getting a new brewery with the arrival of Central Machine Works Brewery and Beer Hall. The brewery takes its name from the industrial space’s former tenant, the Central Machine Works shop, found at 4824 East Cesar Chavez Street. The brewery is looking to open in spring of 2019, the Eater reported on October 29.

Central Machine promises “beers for the working man and woman,” which means a range of beers from American lagers, ales, and IPAs, as well as some international styles like kolsch, pilsners and English brown ales. There will also be seasonal beers and guest taps. The beers will be available on-site and for limited distribution, and the taproom will also have a full bar.

Central Machine’s historic space, which dates back to the 1940s when the workshop welded everything from airplane parts during World War II to custom fabrications to local businesses, will feature a beer garden with family-friendly areas, food trucks, and a stage for live music.

The brewery came about after a group of Austinites (who didn’t want to reveal their names) fell in love with the space. The brewery project has been in the works since 2016, according to an article by Tribeza, which lists ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CT: Charter Oak Brewing fully relocated to new facility in Danbury
Charter Oak Brewing has fully relocated into their new address in historic Danbury, Connecticut and have both their commercial 20 barrel system and pilot 5 barrel brewhouses operating for over 10,000 barrels of capacity, Brewbound reported on October 28.

Scott Vallely, owner and brewmaster, made the transition from bottling beer to investing in a high speed canning line for all their releases. The brewery continues to market 1687 Brown Ale, Royal Charter Pale Ale and the popular Wadsworth IPA in 12oz 6 packs cans and are also packaging limited releases in 16oz 4packs.

Charter Oak’s taproom is now open with 10 rotating draft lines and open Thursday through Sunday. Since opening, the brewery has launched 20 new beers.

Brewery news USA, MA: Backlash Beer Company opening its first taproom
At seven years old, Backlash Beer Company is, remarkably, one of the OG’s of the Massachusetts brewing industry, the Boston Globe reported on October 29.

Backlash burst onto the scene at the same time as breweries like Night Shift, Mystic, and Pretty Things, back when just the idea of craft beer played as novel and shelf space seemed unlimited. Some breweries (like Pretty Things) have closed since, but many more have opened, bringing the nationwide total to more than 6,000 at the end of last year, according to the Brewers Association.

The revolution has come, and there are now nearly as many breweries in Massachusetts as there are state representatives on Beacon Hill, which is why the latest news from Backlash — that the brewery is opening its first taproom, in Boston proper no less — is so significant.

“There’s been such explosion in the number of breweries and also in the way that the consumer’s palate has changed,” says Backlash cofounder Helder Pimentel. “Us being seven years old almost makes us one of the grandfathers of this industry in Massachusetts because so much has happened.”

Housed in an old piano factory in Roxbury, the new Backlash space allows the company to do things ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Duty on beer frozen in 2018 Autumn Budget
Duty on beer, cider and spirits has been frozen by Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond in his 2018 Autumn Budget in Parliament on October, 29, the Morning Advertiser reported.

However, Hammond said that wine duty would rise in line with inflation, meaning the price of a bottle of sparkling wine will increase by 9p and still variants by 7p, and ‘white ciders’ would also be taxed at a higher rate.

Announcing the freeze on beer, cider and spirits, Hammond said: “I have received numerous representations from my honourable and right honourable friends on one particular subject and in response I will be freezing beer and cider duty for the next year, keeping the cost of beer down for patrons of the great British pub.

“And in response to the conservative lobbying of my Scottish colleagues I will also freeze duty on spirits so that we can all afford to raise a wee dram to my colleague Ruth Davidson on the arrival of baby Finn.

“[This will mean, there will be a] saving [of] 2p on a pint of beer, 1p on a pint of cider and 30p on a bottle of Scotch or gin compared to the inflation assumption in the Office ...More info on site
