USA, WI: The Mosinee Brewing Co. to open its doors in mid-November
|
There's soon going to be a new spot to head for a beer in central Wisconsin, the Wausau Daily Herald reported on October 31.
The Mosinee Brewing Co. will open its doors in mid-November, after years of planning and construction, plus a few setbacks.
The brewery will be housed in a building that's over 100 years old at 401 Fourth St., Mosinee, said owner Jacquelyn Forbes Kearns, right in the middle of downtown Mosinee. Originally, the brewery was supposed to open in 2014 as North Abbey Brewing, but there was a fallout with the previous owner, Chad Hoffer. Hoffer left the partnership with the name of the brewery, but Forbes Kearns was left with the building at the end of 2015.
Since then, she and her partner Greg Sperry have been working to make the dream of a brewery a reality, and a catalyst for change in the small city. Forbes Kearns said that she's the investor who helped to finance the brewery and Sperry is going to be the head brewer. Forbes Kearns recently retired from her job as a nurse practitioner at Marshfield Clinic, but has been investing in property and stocks for years, and Sperry has been brewing

USA, AL: Siluria Brewing Company ready to launch in Alabaster on November 10
|
During their friends and family preview night on Oct. 30, Siluria Brewing Company owners Danny and Tammy Sample had to take a moment to step back and reflect on the journey they’ve been through over the past few years, the Shelby County Reporter said.
As Danny Sample’s retirement from the U.S. Army was approaching in June of 2016, he and his wife began contemplating what they were going to do afterward. During their travels, they had come to appreciate small, local breweries and the entire concept behind craft brewing.
Following a yearlong journey to transform the former Alabaster Post Office at 145 First Avenue West into the Siluria Brewing Company, it almost seemed surreal to see visitors filling the building.
“It’s our creation. It’s a great feeling to be able to bring our vision to life and create what we hope our friends and neighbors will enjoy,” Tammy Sample said. “We want to be a comfortable, cozy place.”
After receiving its Alcoholic Beverage Control manufacturing license from the City Council during a recent meeting, the Samples are ready to open Siluria Brewing to the public during the company’s grand opening on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 11 a.m.-11 p.m.

USA, PA: Rivertowne Brewing to be acquired by Helltown Brewing of Mt. Pleasant
|
Bankrupt Rivertowne Brewing’s Export brewery, its Monroeville brewpub and its Verona tavern will be sold to Helltown Brewing of Mt. Pleasant and a Wexford acquisition firm on November 2 if a federal judge approves an agreement to sell the businesses for $2.1 million, the Tribune-Review reported.
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Gregory Taddonio said on November 1 he would approve the amended agreement to sell the businesses to Helltown and Brewery Acquisition Co. of Wexford, once all of the creditors approve the revised sales agreement. Taddonio joked that he did not want to have the agreement circulated among attorneys at midnight for their review, because “we’re dealing with a bar here.”
Attorney John Steiner, representing Brewery Acquisition owner Arnie Burchianti, said they hope to close on the deal on the assets of the Export brewery on Friday.
The agreement sells assets such as machinery and equipment and the liquor licenses, but not real estate because it is not owned by Rivertowne. If it does not buy the Monroeville site, the assets would be removed within 10 days, Steiner said.

USA, MI: Shade falls on Michigan hops industry
|
Just a few short years ago, hops were the hot new crop, powered by ideal growing conditions and demand from the explosive growth of the craft beer industry, the Traverse City Ticker reported on October 31.
Yes, the beer craze has continued unabated; Emily Bennett, who visited every brewery in the state in 2017, lists some 372 Michigan breweries at MittenBeerGirl.com, with another 64 pending. A recent Forbes feature said Michigan ranks behind only California, Washington, and New York in its number of breweries.
But that doesn’t mean the Michigan hops business – not long ago considered virtually a “sure thing” – is booming.
Mike Moran, sales and marketing manager for MI Local Hops in Williamsburg, says it’s all about supply and demand. “Overall, there are public (hops). That’s the majority of varieties grown in Michigan,” he says. “Prices are going down. Proprietary hops prices are going up.”
“It’s spotty,” agrees Brian Tennis. The Omena-based head of the Michigan Hop Alliance says a number of growers have struggled, and some have gone out of business in the past two years. “I think a lot of them planted the wrong variety.”

USA, NC: Mystery Brewing shutting down in Hillsborough
|
After nearly seven years, Mystery Brewing in Hillsborough is pouring its last few beers, WRAL.com reported on October 31.
“A lot of tears and a lot of highs and a lot of lows,” said owner Eric Myers.
“The reason we are shutting down is we’ve run out of operating capital,” he said. “We just don’t have to money to keep going.”
In a block with only a half-dozen store fronts, the loss of a local business takes a toll.
Lisa Wells works at Paws at the Corner, a pet supply store three doors down from Mystery Brewing.
“Anytime an independent store, business, does not continue,” she said, “it hits home.”
Kathy Hupp and her husband own Whit's Frozen Custard.
“It’s going to be sad,” she said. “It’s really going to be sad.”
She said she hopes the loss of Mystery Brewing doesn't start a domino effect.
“I’m really sad with what’s going to happen on this corner,” Myers said.
After closing on October 31, Mystery Brewing will become another ghost of the micro-brew world.

UK: AB InBev to target the on-trade

The man about to take the helm of AB InBev’s total European market may well be focused on achieving growth for his company’s portfolio of brands, but Jason Warner is a person who thinks well beyond the confines of his corporate world, The Morning Advertiser reported on October 30.
World domination may be a phrase too far for AB InBev’s (AB InBev) north Europe president Jason Warner, but the soon-to-be promoted beer boss does have his eyes set on significant growth within his territories – although, he is acutely aware of the challenges that must be met, should the global brewer achieve its desired UK market share.

Nigeria: Brewers continue to battle for supremacy in malt market
|
The love for malt drinks among non-alcoholic drinkers is growing daily. In Nigeria, malt drinks account for a segment of the total carbonate volumes consumed in the country, the Nairametrics reported on October 31.
According to Canadean, an online research portal, Nigeria is the third largest malt market, ranking behind Venezuela and Colombia. In Venezuela, malt is a popular children’s beverage, regularly found in school lunch boxes as a healthy energy source. While in Nigeria, malt drinks are used as substitutes for alcohol, regularly found amongst the drinks provided at social gatherings.
Malt drink is a lightly carbonated beverage, brewed from barley, hops, and water, much like beer. However, corn and caramel colouring may also be added. Historically, it was used as food for children and ailing patients and is often referred to as “children’s beer”. Now, it has since become a major beverage drink consumed by more people watching their nutritional content.

The Philippines: San Miguel Food and Beverage expects to perform well in Q4
|
Listed San Miguel Food and Beverage Inc. (SMFB) expects to perform well in the last three months of 2018 on the back of a projected sales increase during the Christmas season.
The “fourth quarter is normally good for us,” SMFB Chief Operating Officer Francisco Alejo told reporters earlier this week. “For the total [sales of each year], about 27 to 30 percent are [contributed during] the fourth quarter.”
According to him, demand for the San Miguel food-and-drink unit’s products, such as ham and queso de bola, are predicted to rise and contribute a significant share in sales.
Alejo admitted that SMFB faced challenges during the third quarter due to the higher prices of raw materials, such as corn, hydrogenated milk fat and wheat.
“[For] corn, about 500,000 metric tons were unavailable, so we had to import corn, and corn [prices] globally are increasing,” he said.
His statement came as SMFB said it would spend P41 billion to expand the production capacity of its businesses.
The firm plans to spend P10 billion for the next three years, including this year, to build manufacturing facilities for beer, animal feeds and flour, as well as venture into the ready-to-eat business.

India: Radico Khaitan increasing production of its single malt whiskey
|
Radico Khaitan Ltd is increasing production of its Rampur Indian Single Malt whiskey to meet rising demand for the product from North American and European markets, Chief Financial Officer Dilip Banthiya told Cogencis.
While Banthiya did not give details of the capacity expansion, sources said production of the single malt whiskey is being raised by around 15% from the current 500,000 ltr per year at the company’s Rampur distillery.
The additional capacity is expected to come on stream by May, Banthiya said.
“We are pumping in inventory of matured malt to increase production of RISM (Rampur Indian Single Malt) and expect supply to be increased after three to four years as malt needs to be aged,” Banthiya said.
Rampur Indian Single Malt whiskey contributed 20% to the company’s exports in 2017-18 (Apr-Mar). Exports contributed 7% to Radico Khaitan’s total sales of 62.7 bln rupees in that year, a Mumbai-based analyst said.
Most of the company’s capital expenditure for the past two years has gone into increasing capacity for single malt whiskey.
The company will spend 400-500 mln rupees in capital expenditure in 2018-19 (Ap-Mar), Banthiya said.

Saudi Arabia: Saudi Arabia’s grain-buying agency announces tender to purchase 1.02 mln tonnes
|
Saudi Arabia's main state grain-buying agency the Saudi Grains Organization (SAGO) said on November 1 it has issued an international tender to purchase 1.02 million tonnes of animal feed barley, confirming earlier reports from traders.
The tender deadline is November 2, SAGO governor Ahmad Al Fares said in a statement.
SAGO said it is seeking a total of 17 shiploads, with 11 to be unloaded at Saudi Arabian Red Sea ports and six at Gulf ports with arrival sought in January and February 2019.
Traders gave these arrival periods in 2019:
Jan. 1-15: 60,000 tonnes Red Sea in one ship, 60,000 tonnes Gulf in one ship Jan. 15-30: 240,000 tonnes Red Sea in four ships, 120,000 tonnes Gulf in two ships Feb. 1-15: 180,000 tonnes Red Sea in three ships, 60,000 tonnes Gulf in one ship Feb. 15-28: 180,000 tonnes Red Sea in three ships, 120,000 tonnes Gulf in two ships
SAGO reserves the right to purchase up to 10 percent above or below the tender volume. Traders said they expect tender results on Monday, Nov. 5.
In its last reported barley tender on Sept. 10, SAGO bought 1.5 million tonnes.
