Germany: Bühler Group appoints new head of Malting & Brewing
|
Manuel Kindle is appointed the new Head of Business Unit Malting & Brewing of the Bühler Group. He will assume his new function as of April 1, 2019, succeeding Franz Götz who will resign on his own request and assume the role as Key Account and Relationship Manager for the Business Area Grain Quality & Supply as of April 1, 2019.
Manuel Kindle joined Bühler in 2012 and served as Head of Customer Service, making a tremendous impact on the development of Bühler’s service business.
Franz Götz has been engaged with the malting industry since 2001. In 2011 he took over the position of Head of Business Unit Malting and also merged the Brewing end of 2017 into the newly formed Business Unit Malting & Brewing.
Bühler is pleased to count on Franz Götz’ longtime industry experience in his new position as Key Account and Relationship Manager.

Greece: Athenian Brewery starts to export malt to Austria and Israel
|
Greece’s leading beer producer, Athenian Brewery, started to export malt to Austria and Israel this year, implementing part of a plan that has been in place for a number of years in the context of a contract-farming program over the last decade, Ekathimerini.com reported on November 8.
The exports to Austria and Israel were, according to sources, made to third parties and not any of the subsidiaries of the Heineken group to which Athenian belongs.
The Greek company procures the barley from Greek producers and turns it into malt at its own facilities in Thessaloniki in the north and Patra in the west, covering 100 percent of its production needs in Greece. This year Athenian acquired and malted a total of 63,000 tons of Greek barley. After covering its own needs, it went on to export, sending 7,000 tons to Austria and 4,000 tons to Israel.
The beer company is also expanding its cooperation agreements in Greece. It recently started procuring Greek malt for Rhodes-based brewery VAP P. Kouyios, which produces the Zythos VAP beer.

USA: Number of active breweries surges past 7,000
|
Craft beer is growing by leaps and bounds. As reported by CraftBeer.com, the number of active breweries in the U.S. surged past 7,000 last month —boosted by small and independent openings— setting a new, all-time high.
The stat, provided by the Brewers Association’s Chief Economist Bart Watson, reveals that as of the end of October, there were 7,082 active breweries in the U.S. That’s an increase of more than 1,100 compared to the same time last year.
While the official breakdown for 2018 has yet to be released, the overwhelming majority of these breweries are what the Brewers Association defines as small and independent, or craft.
To be considered craft, a brewery must be small (producing 6 million barrels of beer per year or less); independent (less than 25 percent owned by a larger alcohol company that isn’t a craft brewery); and traditional (beers are made with traditional or innovative brewing ingredients and their fermentation, as opposed to flavored malt beverages).
In 2017, craft brewers accounted for 6,266 of the 6,372 breweries in the country (roughly 98.4 percent), and the percentage for this year looks set to be the same, if not higher.

South Africa: AB InBev invests R438 mln in second production line at Ibhayi brewery
|
South African Breweries (SAB) and AB InBev Africa have invested R438 million in installing a second production line at the Ibhayi brewery in Port Elizabeth, Creamer Media's Engineering News reported on November 8.
The new 6 000 m2 packaging line for returnable glass bottles can produce 34 500 bottles an hour, in 910 ml and 1 l sizes, equating to an additional 500 000 hectolitres of beer packaged a year.
The Ibhayi brewery already produces 1.8-million hectolitres a year.
The new packaging line has the capability to produce an additional 1.8-million hectolitres a year, which would bring the brewery’s yearly capacity to around 3.6-million hectolitres, once in full operation.
The new line has already created 14 new jobs, with 40 further jobs to be created if the line is brought to full capacity.
Construction of the new line began in March and was completed in seven months, with its first batch of beer produced in October.
The new line currently produces SAB’s 1 l Castle Lager and Carling Black Label returnable glass bottles. It is expected that Castle Lite’s 910 ml bottle will run on the line from early 2019.
Ibhayi also produces Hansa Pilsner, Castle Milk Stout and Lion Lager.

UK: Heineken stockpiling extra volumes ahead of Brexit

Lovers of Desperados tequila-flavored beer and Strongbow apple cider can rest a little easier in the stressful run-up to Brexit. Dutch brewer Heineken NV is stockpiling extra booze, Bloomberg reported on November 8.
The drinks maker is working with U.K. logistics company Wincanton Plc to find additional storage space ahead of March 29, when Britain is set to leave the European Union. It has already started storing more volumes, and plans to build them up over the coming weeks and months, according to Wincanton Chief Executive Officer Adrian Colman. Heineken is looking to stockpile thousands of pallets worth of goods, he said Thursday.
The move highlights growing corporate anxiety as the Brexit deadline looms. While Prime Minister Theresa May has begun briefing her cabinet on the text of a near-complete Brexit deal, the terms for the cross-border trade of goods and services haven’t been finalized. Fears are mounting among a broad range of manufacturers that new barriers will disrupt supply chains.

USA & UK: AB InBev’s Goose Island Beer Co opens London brewery
|
AB InBev-owned Goose Island Beer Co has opened its first European brewpub in Shoreditch, east London, as the struggle to dominate the capital’s increasingly valuable ‘craft’ beer market heats up, Imbibe reported on November 8.
Brewpubs have become the latest front in this conflict. Brewdog opened in Tower Hill earlier this year, and the Kirin-owned Australian brand Little Creatures is expected to follow suit soon in King’s Cross. There are also strong rumours that Sierra Nevada is aiming to open a brewpub in London.
This is the second attempt by AB InBev to establish a beachhead for the brand in London after its Vintage Ale House in Balham closed earlier this year. The company also owns Camden Town Brewery.
The brewpub, on the corner of Shoreditch High Street and Great Eastern Street, had its soft opening last week. It has 12 keg and two cask beers on the bar, with includes four beers from other breweries. There is also a line using the Rack AeriAle system, which allows beers to be poured directly from the barrel.

Australia: Lion to take over sales and marketing of Brooklyn Brewery beers in Australia
|
Lion will take over the marketing, sales and distribution of Brooklyn Brewery beers in Australia in a new agreement signed with the US brewer, Beer & Brewer reported on November 8.
In addition the new deal will also see Little Creatures Geelong brew Brooklyn Brewery Lager under licence, with the broader range of Brooklyn Brewery beers continuing to be imported for distribution.
Speaking about the agreement Lion’s General Manager Craft, Gordon Treanor, said: “Brooklyn Brewery is one of the world’s most iconic craft breweries and has played a fundamental role in the growth of craft beer in the United States and across the globe.
“We are excited to welcome Brooklyn Brewery into Lion’s craft portfolio. We see strong potential to grow Brooklyn Brewery Lager and their full range of fantastic, flavoursome beers.”
The venture will build on the success of Brooklyn Brewery’s partnership with Premium Beverages in Australia and Robin Ottaway, President of Brooklyn Brewery, said: “We are thrilled to begin working with Lion and take the next step in Brooklyn Brewery’s evolution in Australia.
