LET'S STAY WITH HAZE

ABSTRACT
We learned from the NEIPA study that hops do contribute to haze, although in relatively low amounts. Other US Researchers have found that the extract of spent hops can be used to considerably decrease beer haze (if not intended as in most beer styles) and also helps to prolong physical stability if dosed basically as a fining agent in the final beer before filtration. Yes hops, you make it all possible!

Barley news Canada & China: China’s thirst for high-end beers fuels Canadian barley surge
At a laboratory in downtown Winnipeg, Peter Watts samples a golden pale ale, admiring the silky foam top and smooth, slightly grain-tinged taste. A new variety of barley grown in Canada’s Prairies helped flavor this beer, and brewers anticipate that the kernels will one day end up in shipments to meet China’s increasing thirst for premium ales and lagers, Bloomberg reported on December 4.

“We saw a real uptick in the last couple of years” in China’s demand, said Watts, managing director of the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre, a non-profit research facility funded by some of the nation’s malting companies, exporters, brewers and farmers. “We think that’s because they’re producing more premium beer.”

As brewers target discerning drinkers, the center is helping to fuel research of new malt-barley varieties that produce a richer mouthfeel, color and flavor than lower-quality grain.

Canada, the second-largest malt-barley exporter to China, is trying to gain a bigger slice of the burgeoning market from Australia, the top shipper.

China is the world’s largest beer market, and consumers are increasingly shifting to premium and foreign brews from mass-market brands amid rising incomes. The market share of premium lager in the five years ended 2017 more than doubled, according to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: UpCountry Brewing now pouring brews in Brevard
Asheville-based UpCountry Brewing is now pouring brews in Brevard’s Lumberyard Arts District, the company’s second location, BlueRidgeNow.com reported on November 30.

The new taproom had a soft opening Nov. 23. The brewery is located at the site of the former Peaks and Creeks Brewing, which closed earlier this month, at 212 King St., Suite B.

Brevard perfectly fit the brewing company’s brand, which focuses on the outdoors, according to founder John Cochran. He considers the city the “Mecca of mountain biking,” with plenty of hiking and other recreation opportunities.

“This really is an amazing place. There’s a lot going on here,” Cochran said.

The Brevard spot will specialize in sour beers, with the brewing process starting in the next few months. Brewing of other beers will continue at the Asheville site, as Cochran said it isn’t wise to brew sours in the same space as the other beers.

Current options on tap include the Bogey Free Session IPA, Isoprene Hazy IPA, Tripel Lindy, Trapped Under Weiss! (hefeweizen), Hop Dread (red IPA), Coffee Saison, Bold Rock Blood Orange cider, Mangose, Old Black Water Baltic Porter, and UpCo Mountain Lager. Beers will rotate throughout the year.

UpCountry is keeping two Peaks and Creeks beers on tap through the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MD: Silver Branch Brewing Co. slated to open in mid- to late January in Silver Spring
Silver Branch Brewing Co. is slated to open in mid- to late January in downtown Silver Spring, slightly later than its owners’ planned debut in late 2018, BethesdaMagazine.com reported on November 30.

The brewery will be the third in the area, joining Denizens Brewing Co. on East West Highway and Astro Lab Brewing, which opened at 8216 Georgia Ave. in October. The company was founded in January 2017 under the name Parallel World Brewing Co. by co-owners Christian Layke, 46, and Brett Robison, 30, who leased a first-floor space at 8401 Colesville Road on Metro Center Plaza in September 2017.

“We love Silver Spring as a neighborhood, in part because we live here, but also because it’s very diverse, appears to be growing, has two other breweries and there is no shortage of demand for good beer,” Robison said in an email.

Layke is a former brewer at Gordon Biersch in Rockville, while Robison was previously a general manager at Republic, an eatery in Takoma Park. The co-owners were aiming for an opening later this year, but pushed it to January due to delays in permitting, plus a long wait for structural explorations and design changes that slowed construction. Robison said they plan ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, DE: Revelation Craft Brewing acquiring former 16 Mile Brewing property in Georgetown
Revelation Craft Brewing is acquiring the former 16 Mile Brewing property in Georgetown, delawarebusinessnow.com reported on November 30.

Co-owner Frank Metcalfe said the Rehoboth Beach brewer says the location is a “right opportunity” for the craft brewer.

Revelation plans to have the location open as a brewery and tasting room in the spring. Also planned is meeting-reception space and a kitchen. Room for smaller events can be hard to find, he noted.

The 16 Mile brewery abruptly closed earlier this year. It was one of the craft beer pioneers in Delaware and for a time operated a beer-focused restaurant on Newark.

Demand has been great than the ability of the Rehoboth brewery to supply upwards of a dozen and a half different brews.

Metcalfe says popular offerings include sours and Mother-in-Law IPA. “It’s a good problem to have,” he says.

Metcalfe noted that the 16 Mile location is modern and well maintained and is capable of allowing a phase-in of growth. “We don’t have to run at capacity,” he said.

Revelation beer is available at about 75 restaurants, mostly in Sussex County. The production from the new site would allow expansion into New Castle County as well as Maryland and Pennsylvania.

The 16 Mile site is the third ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, LA: Gilla Brewing Company to sign lease for its first facility in Gonzales
Ascension Parish is getting its first craft brewery next summer, in a 2,400-square-foot space off Highway 44 in Gonzales, the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report said on November 29.

Within the next week, Gilla Brewing Company plans to sign a four-year lease for two suites in the Cannon Crossing shopping center, also home to Sun Nails Gonzales and Elle Hair Studio.

Owners Derek Stewart, Bradley Andersen and Alex Shillings will brew everything from New England-style IPAs to fruited sours in one suite, using the other as a tap room.

“We’ve been together for about a year, brewing out of my garage,” says Stewart, a chemical refinery instrument technician who also worked at Tiger Tavern in Gonzales. “But between all of us—Brad’s been brewing nine years, I’ve been brewing eight, and Alex has for 10.”

Stewart—along with Andersen, a senior global logistics specialist, and Shillings, a process operator at a local chemical plant—will offer 12-oz. glasses, costing between $5 and $8 depending on the type of beer, as well as both standard and rotating flagship IPAs and stouts. Prices for 4- and 5-oz. flights will vary, he says.

The brewery’s closest competitors will be Tin Roof and Southern Craft, both located in Baton Rouge, with another ...More info on site

Barley news UK: Winter crop area seen higher this year
The provisional results of the AHDB Early Bird Survey of cropping intentions for harvest 2019 suggest an increase in the winter crop area, reversing the recent trend toward spring planting. This follows favourable drilling conditions this autumn for most of the UK and comparatively higher prices for combinable crops following the difficult summer this year, AHDB reported on December 3.

The survey was conducted in the first two weeks of November and this year covered almost 570 thousand ha of GB arable area.

The area of UK wheat is anticipated to rise by 4% to 1.86 mln ha in 2019, which would be over 66 thousand ha higher than provisional Defra data for 2018 and almost 28 thousand ha higher than the five year average (2014-2018). Winter barley is also forecast to see an increase in area in 2019 rising to 444 thousand ha, a 13% rise from the provisional 2018 area.

The increased forecast for wheat and winter barley likely come partly at the expense of spring barley, which is projected to decline in area by 3% to 735 thousand ha in 2019. This season is likely seeing a reversal of decisions made last year, when the wet autumnal weather in 2017 ...More info on site

Brewery news Ireland: Price of alcohol could rise significantly in case of no deal Brexit
The price of alcohol could rise "significantly" for Irish and British customers if the EU-UK Brexit backstop deal fails to make it through a Westminster vote and a no deal crisis occurs, BreakingNews.ie reported on December 3.

On Tuesday, December 4 the Alcohol Beverage Federation of Ireland is expected to warn "immediate" tariffs on beer, cider, glass bottles and other items will be introduced at the end of March if the deal collapses, in addition to customs check delay "additional costs" and extra VAT expenses.

In an opening statement to the Oireachtas agriculture committee, the ABFI will say that according to the Central Statistics Office the alcohol trade between Britain and Ireland was worth €364 mln last year.

However, if a no-deal situation occurs, it will warn all of these exports will be unable to avoid strict tariffs on products being sent from both countries - a situation the group said will "damage" the sector and hit customs in the pocket.

"The ABFI would urge all parties to seek to ensure that a withdrawal agreement is concluded and that a no-deal Brexit is avoided. A no-deal Brexit would be seriously damaging to the Irish and UK economy, including the all-island drinks industry. The potential ...More info on site
