LET'S STAY WITH HAZE
ABSTRACT
We learned from the NEIPA study that hops do
contribute to haze, although in relatively low amounts.
Other US Researchers have found that the extract of
spent hops can be used to considerably decrease beer
haze (if not intended as in most beer styles) and also
helps to prolong physical stability if dosed basically
as a fining agent in the final beer before filtration. Yes
hops, you make it all possible!

USA, GA: Sceptre Brewing Arts to open in Oakhurst Village in early 2019
|
If all goes according to plan, Sceptre Brewing Arts should be open in Oakhurst Village, Decatur in early 2019, MyAJC reported on December 5.
The new venture from the team behind Argosy in East Atlanta Village will replace the short-lived Oak Brewpub, which closed in November 2017.
Owners Armando Celentano, Benjamin Rhoades, and Donald Durant will be joined by Argosy and Sceptre culinary director Michael Person, general manager Drew Gillespie, and brewmaster Trevor Jones.
Look for a menu of “beer friendly pairings, elevated comfort food, and refined pub classics” from Person.
According to Celentano, “Sceptre Brewing Arts will cultivate dynamic fermented beverages by utilizing artisanal agriculture to develop sophisticated yet approachable beer. Embracing modern American craft brewing techniques, SBA strives to bring innovative brewing and culinary inspiration to the Atlanta beer scene.”
Jones met Celentano, Rhoades and Durant in 2013, when he became part of the opening bar staff at Argosy.
Since then, Jones has apprenticed at Red Brick Brewing (now Atlanta Brewing), and brewed at Orpheus Brewing. He completed the American Brewers Guild Brewing Science and Engineering program in July 2018.

USA, MA: Mighty Squirrel Brewing Co. to open its doors on Friday, December 7
|
This Friday, December 7 marks a milestone for Waltham: a new brewery and taproom opening within the city limits, the MetroWest Daily News reported.
Mighty Squirrel Brewing Co.—known for beers Kiwi White, Mocha Stout and Cloud Candy IPA—will open on Friday, Dec. 7 at 5 p.m. to the public.
The new taproom and brewery in Waltham marks two major milestones: the brewing company’s first physical space and the only current brewery and taproom of its kind in Waltham.
So far, 2018 sales for the brewery have grown by 900 percent.
The space at 411 Waverley Oaks Road can hold upward of 320 people in a 23,000 square-foot building. Today the company employs around 25 people—part-time and full-time staffers—and plans to add as many as six more in the coming months.
“We want to have a home,” said Naveen Pawar, co-founder of the company. “It is one thing to go and brew a beer somewhere else but at the same time you cannot have the same level of quality control as you do in your own space.”

USA, NJ: Hackensack Brewing Company working hard to launch by New Year
|
Beer lovers will soon be able to add another stop on their Bergen beer crawl. Local brewer Mike Jones received the green light from the Hackensack Planning Board earlier this year to transform a warehouse on Johnson Avenue into the Hackensack Brewing Company, NorthJersey.com reported on December 7.
Jones, a Hackensack resident, began homebrewing years ago, but didn’t put any stock in his beers' quality until he won an award in 2016 at the New Jersey State Fair for an IPA and a dark German lager he brewed. That’s when Jones seriously began considering opening a brewery.
Now, he’s working to get Hackensack Brewing Co. up and running. The projected opening date is around New Year, though Jones says it’s nearly impossible to predict when the brewery will open its doors. Inspectors, licensing agencies and more slow down the process.
When it does open, Jones hopes to have a manufacturing area on one side and a taproom on the other. The taproom is set to have nine seats and eight beers on tap on a rotating basis.

USA: TTB seeking public input on proposed update to alcohol regulations
|
Unless you’re in the alcoholic beverage industry, you’ve probably never heard – or cared – about this section of the United States Code of Federal Regulations. However, if you drink whisky, other distilled spirits, beer, or wine, CFR Title 27, Part 5 affects you on a regular basis, WhiskyCast reported on December 6.
It sets out the specific definitions for all alcoholic beverages sold in the United States, along with labeling requirements, marketing restrictions, and everything right down to the size of bottles that can legally be sold in the U.S. It contains the regulation that requires whiskies be sold in 750ml bottles instead of the 700ml bottles used in most other countries, and it’s also where the official definition of Bourbon lives.
The U.S. Treasury Department’s Tax & Trade Bureau (TTB) administers Part 5, along with the rest of Title 27 covering the alcohol, tobacco, and excise taxes for the firearms industry. It inherited that role in 2003, when the Homeland Security Act of 2002 split up the old Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms by moving its law enforcement functions to the new Department of Homeland Security while keeping the revenue and regulatory functions within the Treasury Department. Vietnam: Sabeco gets approval for unrestricted foreign ownership
|
Sabeco, Vietnam's leading beer producer, has been given approval for unrestricted foreign ownership, the company said in a press release on December 6.
The foreign ownership cap of 49 per cent at Sabeco will be removed and the maximum rate of foreign ownership will now be 100 per cent, the company said.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade currently holds a stake of 36 per cent at Sabeco and Vietnam Beverage, a legal entity established by Thai Bev in Vietnam to avoid the cap of 49 per cent for foreign investors, holds a controlling stake of 53.59 per cent after a US$5 billion (Bt164 billion) acquisition deal at the end of 2017. Vietnam Beverage’s acquisition of more than 343.6 million shares of Sabeco was the largest deal in Southeast Asia over the past three years.
Other stakeholders own 10.41 per cent of the company.
Vietnam Beverage has charter capital of VNĐ682 billion (Bt976 million).
Foreign ownership at Sabeco might not increase to 100 per cent immediately, since the Ministry of Industry and Trade has not revealed any plans to sell its remaining stake, the company said. However, the unrestricted foreign ownership could help ThaiBev become a direct stakeholder at Sabeco.

UK: Non-alcoholic and low-strength beers “incredibly important” to UK pubs
|
Non-alcoholic and low-strength beers are now “incredibly important” to UK pubs, according to the head of the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA), as the no ABV category ferments in Europe.
Brigid Simmons, CEO of the BBPA, told The Drinks Business that lower strength beers are a “really great opportunity for the beer market.”
Simmonds’ views coincide with a report published by the Brewers of Europe on December 4, which shows that non-alcoholic beer now counts for 2% of Europe’s beer production by value. Sales of European non-alcoholic beer rose to reach nearly €900 million (£800 million) in 2017.
A number of UK breweries have started to add low alcohol versions of their flagship beers to their portfolios. Brewer and pub giant Greene King announced plans to introduce a 0.5% ABV version of its popular ale Old Speckled Hen last month, while Suffolk-based St Peter’s brewery signed a deal with the Old Sport Company to serve its 0.0% ale Without Gold at the group’s sites in Lemington Spa and Wokingham, with other pubs in the chain set to introduce it “very soon.”

Armenia: Beer output up 13.7% in January-October this year

Armenia’s output of strong drinks, including vodka, brandy, whiskey, champagne and wine, has shrunk over the first ten months of this year, the National Statistical Service reported.
According to the report, vodka output shrank 33% in Jan-Oct 2018 to 2,990,000 litres, brandy 2.6% to 24,207,700 litres, whiskey 30.9% to 627,500 litres, wine 6.6% to 6,436,700 and champagne 3.7% to 413.400 litres.
Beer output grew 13.7% to 21,076,100 litres in Jan-Oct 2018, ARKA reported.
Also 89,712,900 litres of soft drinks have been produced in Armenia over a period between January and October 2018 – 14.5% more than was produced at the same period a year before.

World: China’s Tsingtao beer now exported to more than 100 countries
|
Chu Liangjing still remembers when his company did business overseas 30 years ago, and had no idea where its products were sold, the China Daily reported on December 6.
"It was like a 'blind' sale without knowing the other end of an order. There seemed to be several walls between the sellers, overseas dealers and consumers," said Chu, deputy general manager of Tsingtao Brewery International.
Chu started working at the international department of Tsingtao Brewery, based in Qingdao, Shandong province, in 1986.
At a time when China was dominated by a planned economy, the brewery didn't have the right to directly export products. Instead, beer products were supplied to a designated foreign trade corporation under the administration of the provincial government.
Founded in 1903 by German and British merchants, Tsingtao Brewery bears the name of its birth place. It had gained some renown by the 1980s, but was still far from being a world-leading beer maker.
Things changed after Tsingtao Brewery was granted the right to export directly in April 1987.
Chu said he was told it should shift its focus to real customer needs and ought to learn how to compete in global markets.

Australia: Court orders Seednet to pay penalty for false claims about Compass barley
|
The Australian federal court has ordered Landmark Operations Limited (trading as Seednet) to pay a A$1 million penalty for making false, misleading and deceptive claims in a fact sheet for its barley variety known as Compass, World-Grain.com reported on December 7.
According to The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), from at least December 2014 to December 2016, Seednet told farmers that Compass barley had strong straw and better straw strength and lodging resistance (ability to remain upright), than an older variety of barley known as Commander, when that was not the case. Seednet also misled farmers into thinking Compass was better suited to early sowing, higher fertility paddocks and higher nitrogen rates than Commander.
Lodging is a term used to describe the tendency for some cereal crops with weaker stems to fall over as they mature and ripen. ACCC noted, crops that experience severe lodging can be difficult or impossible to harvest, resulting in reduced yields and increased harvesting costs.

UK: Scotland Food and Drink urges drinkers to ditch imported beer

Industry body Scotland Food and Drink (SFD) has urged drinkers to ditch imported beer in a bid to grow Scottish brewing into a £1 bln industry by 2030, the Food Manufacture reported on December 6.
The plan followed a year-long study into the challenges of growing the sector, led by the newly created Brewing Industry Leadership Group, with the outcomes published in a new report titled Brewing Up a Storm.
SFD chair Hilary Jones commented: “Even though we have an unrivalled track record producing great beer and centuries of history behind us, the rising popularity of global craft beer means that Scotland needs to sharpen its game if it is to remain an international leader.
“Scotland has a precious reputation for brewing quality and there are many opportunities for future growth, but we need a new national and unified approach, which maximises potential and drives quality.”
The report detailed 16 recommendations that will be implemented to achieve SFD’s goal of a £1 bln brewery industry.
