Malaysia: Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia optimistic about beer sales growth this year
|
Robust beer sales up to the third quarter ended last September, which continued even after the introduction of the Sales and Services Tax (SST), have given Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd reason to be optimistic that the trend will be maintained into Chinese New Year next month, The Edge Markets MY reported on January 22.
“We expect the momentum to continue well into the Chinese New Year season,” says group managing director Lars Lehmann.
His confidence does not appear to be misplaced. Beer consumption rose year on year even after the introduction of SST in September, he says, attributing it to more effective innovation and promotion of Carlsberg’s core and premium brands. Even the weaker ringgit and a 5.5% hike in beer prices post SST did not dent demand.
“We have not seen reduced domestic demand for our brands in Malaysia, which, in fact, have recorded double-digit growth as at the end of the third quarter [of last year] (3QFY2018). Group revenue has been further diversified through our Singapore operations and export sales,” Lehmann says in an email exchange with The Edge.

UK: Alcohol-free beer sales up 33% yoy
|
Beck’s Blue remains the top dog in the non-alcoholic beer sector in the UK, but it has seen its market share eroded by a plethora of newcomers to the category, the Drinks Retailing News reported on January 18.
The AB InBev brand suffered a modest 1.9% sales decline in the year to December (IRI), but it still accounts for more than a third of alcohol-free beer sales.
Second placed Bavaria also saw sales drop, by 9.8%, as leading brewers launched rival brands.
Heineken 0.0, backed by a huge marketing campaign, is now the third bestselling alcohol-free beer after enjoying sales growth of 182.6% in the past year.
Another AB InBev brand, Budweiser Prohibition, is up to fourth after huge growth and Brewdog’s Nanny State is fifth after enjoying a 54.3% sales rise.
Marston’s Erdinger non-alcoholic beer is sixth and the same company’s Warsteiner Fresh is 10th.
Alcohol-free ale St Peter’s Without has gatecrashed the top 10 by taking eighth place, sandwiched between San Miguel 0.0 and Cobra Zero.

Rwanda: Rwanda’s Bralirwa starts local production of Heineken beer
|
Rwanda’s biggest brewer, Bralirwa, has started production of Heineken beer at its plant in the country’s western Gisenyi province, in a move meant to reduce retail prices and boost sales on the continent, cgtn.com reported on January 19.
Local production is expected to cut retail prices by a fifth, according to the brewer.
Bralirwa, which produces local beers like Primus, has been importing Heineken made in the Netherlands.
Last year, the company announced the switch to brewing Heineken locally, saying this was made possible by investments in its plant.
The beer will also be exported to neighbouring countries. These include Burundi and Democratic Republic of Congo, as the brewer aims to meet growing demand.
The price per bottle of Heineken is expected to drop to 800 francs ($0.9231) from 1,000 francs, once local production kicks in.
Heineken is the world’s second largest beer.
Rwanda joins Nigeria, Namibia, South Africa, Algeria, Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia and Ethiopia as local producers of Heineken in Africa.

Nigeria: Guinness Plc’s brewery damaged by fire
|
Property worth millions of naira was lost at the weekend when fire gutted part of Guinness Plc brewery at Unity Garden Estate in Osisioma Ngwa Local Government of Abia State, The Nation Newspaper reported on January 21.
As of January 20, the Abia State Fire Service was yet to give an official statement on the fire. But sources suspect the fire started in a bush behind the factory’s fence.
Efforts by the service to stop the fire were unsuccessful. The fire spread to stacks of wooden pallets and plastic bottle cases on the premises.
The fire-fighters, however, prevented the fire from getting to a nearby pipeline belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
Head of the Abia State Fire Service Okezie corroborated suspicions the fire started from bushes behind the brewery.
Uche said the damage could have been lesser if inflammable materials, such as crates were kept away from the fence.
He said: “We got the information around 1pm and by then, the fire had become too much. We did our best and when it became wild, I called for a backup from Umuahia.

USA & Malaysia: Brooklyn Brewery’s beer now available on draft in Malaysia
|
Craft beer from Brooklyn Brewery is now available on draft in Malaysia, Star2.com reported on January 19.
Two expressions from the renowned American brewery are currently on tap at The Good Guys (TGG), Plaza Arkadia at Desa Parkcity, and the Brooklyn Bar at High Line Rooftop Market, Resorts World Genting, which was the first Brooklyn flagship outlet in South-East Asia.
The beers are imported by Carlsberg Malaysia, which has been hosting a series of craft beer and food pairing experiences in collaboration with Thirst Magazine to give Malaysians a chance to sample Brooklyn Beer.
The fifth edition of the series was recently held at TGG, which paired five specialties featuring diverse South-East Asian flavours with the signature Brooklyn Lager and the hoppy Brooklyn East IPA.
Brooklyn Lager (5.2% ABV) is an American amber lager in the “Vienna” style, while the Brooklyn East IPA (6.9% ABV) is an approachable session IPA that is perfect for those who are new to the hoppy nature of the style.

Australia: November feed barley exports go mostly to Saudi Arabia and the UAE

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have bought 110,095 tonnes, or 96 per cent, of the 114,643 tonnes of feed barley Australia exported in November, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), Grain Central reported on January 21.
The November feed figure marks the start of current-crop barley shipments from Australia, and China is notable in its absence, with no purchases of Australian coarse grains showing up in the data.
This is in stark contrast to the front shipping months for Australia’s old-crop feed barley, when China was regularly buying more than 200,000 tonnes of barley each month until its demand faded in July.
Market Check head of strategy Nick Crundall said the historically low number for November shipments was no surprise, as drought had wiped the eastern states’ export surplus, and Western Australia, Australia’s key current-crop exporter, was only around 60pc through its harvest.
“Compounding this was the very little old-crop left over from the 2017-18 season that could have been exported in November,” Mr Crundall said.
“Once we ticked over into December and new-crop was piling up in Western Australia, we saw a big month of December barley exports, easily surpassing the five-year average.”

Japan: Japan imports more whiskey to cover shortage of local produce
|
Whiskey imports from unexpected places are increasing in Japan to cover the shortage of Japanese-made spirits caused by the growing popularity of highballs, the Asahi Shimbun reported on January 21.
In autumn last year, shoppers seeking “seibo” year-end gifts were surprised to find “whiskey from Taiwan” at a Japanese and foreign liquor section of the Kintetsu department store in Osaka’s Abeno Ward.
A 700-milliliter bottle of Taiwanese Kavalan single malt whiskey was available for at least 4,500 yen ($41.50), excluding tax.
In Scotland, the homeland of the spirit, whisky is said to require at least three-year maturing periods. That type of alcoholic drink is produced in Hokkaido and other cold areas in Japan.
In Taiwan, located in a subtropical zone, whiskey matures “three to four times faster than in Scotland due to its hot climate,” according to Osaka-based Itochu-Shokuhin Co., which imports Kavalan, an emerging whiskey brand in Japan.
The Taiwanese whiskey is distilled by beverage maker King Car Group Co., which started producing whiskey more than 10 years ago.
