Brewery news USA, OK: Stronger ales now allowed for sale in Oklahoma grocery and convenience stores
Beer snobs are raising their mugs to a stronger brew in three states that once forbade grocers from selling anything but low-alcohol brands, and the changes could indirectly chill the industry in two others where such regulations remain, ABC News reported on January 18.

Until October, Oklahoma grocery and convenience stores could stock beer with only up to 3.2 percent alcohol content — considerably lower than even leading light beer brands. Liquor stores were able to sell stronger 8.99 percent beer but were prohibited from selling cold beer of any strength.

Voter-approved changes now allow stronger ales to be sold in Oklahoma grocery and convenience stores. And many of the changes are being adopted this year in the adjoining states of Colorado and Kansas.

The beer revolution will leave just two states — Utah and Minnesota — where only 3.2 percent beer may be sold in grocery and convenience stores. Beer industry observers say how lawmakers in those states react to the changes could determine whether the future of low-point beer in the U.S is as flat as a week-old lager. Half of the nation's 3.2 beer market was in Oklahoma and an additional 20 percent was in Colorado.

"It is a dramatic drop," ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Redemption Rock Brewing Co. to host grand opening party on January 26
Worcester will have a fifth brewery come this weekend when Redemption Rock Brewing Co. opens its doors, MassLive.com reported on January 21.

The brewery at 333 Shrewsbury St. is hosting a grand opening party on Saturday, January 26 from noon to 10 p.m., featuring live music, local food and coffee, and, of course, beer.

Redemption Rock is a dream six years in the making for CEO Dani Babineau, her life and business partner, Greg Carlson, his twin brother, Dan Carlson, and their friend, Kevin Kirkness.

The grand opening will feature live music by Joy Rachelle from noon to 3 p.m., popovers from Worcester's Asylum Popatorium and coffee from Acoustic Java and Atomic Coffee Roasters.

The name Redemption Rock is inspired by the historic site in Princeton, where Babineau grew up.

Inside the 6,000-square-foot brewery is 3,000 square feet of taproom space and a bar with 12 draft lines.

Redemption Rock joins existing Worcester breweries: Wormtown Brewery, 3cross Fermentation Cooperative, Flying Dreams Brewing Co. and Greater Good Imperial Brewing Co.

Brewery news USA, WA: Trap Door Brewing opening second location
Trap Door Brewing of Vancouver, Washington is opening a second location, a taproom, in nearby Ridgefield. The new taproom will be located just off Interstate 5 at exit 14, about 15 minutes north of the brewery’s current location in downtown Vancouver. We learned this today via a report in The Columbian. The brewery’s new taproom will be located in Ridgefield Pioneer Village, a new mixed-use development with roughly 300 apartments. The community covers a total of 40 acres, which includes 20 acres of residential housing, 10 acres or commercial businesses, and 10 acres park land.

In a statement released by Trap Door Brewing, company owner Bryan Schull said, “Our Vancouver location will remain the primary location for brewing. We will continue to ferment, keg, bottle and can at the Vancouver location, which will supply the taps at both locations.”

Schull says that the second location will see some fermentation and barrel work. “We will also be transporting batches of wort to the new facility where we will be fermenting and barrel-aging wild fermentations for our sour beers program.”

“We are thrilled to offer our products in this amazing community and exciting development,” added Schull. “We are happy to serve this community not only ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Ballast Point Brewing Company opens brewery in Disneyland
The happiest place on earth can now be referred to as the "hoppiest" place on earth, thanks to the Downtown Disney District's newest addition, KGUN reported on January 17.

The park announced on January 17 the opening of Ballast Point Brewing Company, the area's first-ever brewery.

"The upper story 7,000-sq. ft. restaurant and bar offers several unique seating areas, including an open-air bar and expansive outdoor patio, all with views of the Downtown Disney District," Public Relations Manager Valerie Lee said in a press release.

According to Ballast Point, the brewery offers a large variety of award-winning beers fresh from the tap. In addition, it features a full menu of locally inspired cuisine with kid-friendly options.

"From grain to glass, Ballast Point Brewing Company is dedicated to the craft of its production, from selecting raw materials to the brewing process, which includes 300-plus quality testing touch points," the brewery said.

Brewery news USA & Malaysia: Brooklyn Brewery’s beer now available on draft in Malaysia
Craft beer from Brooklyn Brewery is now available on draft in Malaysia, Star2.com reported on January 19.

Two expressions from the renowned American brewery are currently on tap at The Good Guys (TGG), Plaza Arkadia at Desa Parkcity, and the Brooklyn Bar at High Line Rooftop Market, Resorts World Genting, which was the first Brooklyn flagship outlet in South-East Asia.

The beers are imported by Carlsberg Malaysia, which has been hosting a series of craft beer and food pairing experiences in collaboration with Thirst Magazine to give Malaysians a chance to sample Brooklyn Beer.

The fifth edition of the series was recently held at TGG, which paired five specialties featuring diverse South-East Asian flavours with the signature Brooklyn Lager and the hoppy Brooklyn East IPA.

Brooklyn Lager (5.2% ABV) is an American amber lager in the “Vienna” style, while the Brooklyn East IPA (6.9% ABV) is an approachable session IPA that is perfect for those who are new to the hoppy nature of the style.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Beard Free Brewing closes down less than a year after opening
Beard Free Brewing in Peterborough, Ontario has apparently closed down less than a year after opening, the Canadian Beer News reported on January 18.

Beard Free was launched in March 2018 by Nick Dubé, John Rozema, and Steveon Zablosky, although two of the partners reportedly left not long afterwards.

Further troubles became evident earlier this week when a post about an alleged theft and fraud by a former employee was shared on the company’s Facebook page. While it was later removed and replaced with an apology, the entire Facebook page was subsequently taken offline, and Google is now listing the brewery as “Permanently Closed”.

It has been suggested that the brewery has been sold, but if true, it’s unclear if the new owners will reopen under the Beard Free name, or relaunch with a new name at a future date.

Brewery news USA, MS: Lucky Town Brewing Company ending production
Lucky Town Brewing Company in Jackson is ending production after six years, WLBT reported on January 18.

In a Facebook post, the company said a consistent string of issues ranging from equipment failures to water problems, made doing business increasingly difficult.

The Tap Room will remain open until March 9.

“Over the next eight weeks we will have the tap room open Tuesdays-Saturdays," they said in the post. "We hope you will come join us for a final pint or two and grab a six pack on your way out. We will end with one last Sippin’ Saturday on March 9th, we would love to see everyone there.”

Brewery news Malaysia: Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia optimistic about beer sales growth this year
Robust beer sales up to the third quarter ended last September, which continued even after the introduction of the Sales and Services Tax (SST), have given Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd reason to be optimistic that the trend will be maintained into Chinese New Year next month, The Edge Markets MY reported on January 22.

“We expect the momentum to continue well into the Chinese New Year season,” says group managing director Lars Lehmann.

His confidence does not appear to be misplaced. Beer consumption rose year on year even after the introduction of SST in September, he says, attributing it to more effective innovation and promotion of Carlsberg’s core and premium brands. Even the weaker ringgit and a 5.5% hike in beer prices post SST did not dent demand.

“We have not seen reduced domestic demand for our brands in Malaysia, which, in fact, have recorded double-digit growth as at the end of the third quarter [of last year] (3QFY2018). Group revenue has been further diversified through our Singapore operations and export sales,” Lehmann says in an email exchange with The Edge.

In 3QFY2018, Carlsberg’s net profit jumped 52% to RM64.98 million y-o-y owing to higher sales in Malaysia and a better performance at its ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Alcohol-free beer sales up 33% yoy
Beck’s Blue remains the top dog in the non-alcoholic beer sector in the UK, but it has seen its market share eroded by a plethora of newcomers to the category, the Drinks Retailing News reported on January 18.

The AB InBev brand suffered a modest 1.9% sales decline in the year to December (IRI), but it still accounts for more than a third of alcohol-free beer sales.

Second placed Bavaria also saw sales drop, by 9.8%, as leading brewers launched rival brands.

Heineken 0.0, backed by a huge marketing campaign, is now the third bestselling alcohol-free beer after enjoying sales growth of 182.6% in the past year.

Another AB InBev brand, Budweiser Prohibition, is up to fourth after huge growth and Brewdog’s Nanny State is fifth after enjoying a 54.3% sales rise.

Marston’s Erdinger non-alcoholic beer is sixth and the same company’s Warsteiner Fresh is 10th.

Alcohol-free ale St Peter’s Without has gatecrashed the top 10 by taking eighth place, sandwiched between San Miguel 0.0 and Cobra Zero.

The dynamic category is up 33% year-on-year, according to IRI, following a strong Christmas. Kantar reported that sales of alcohol-free beer rose by £7.6 million over the 12-week period leading up to and including Christmas, while the category ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: November feed barley exports go mostly to Saudi Arabia and the UAE
Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have bought 110,095 tonnes, or 96 per cent, of the 114,643 tonnes of feed barley Australia exported in November, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), Grain Central reported on January 21.

The November feed figure marks the start of current-crop barley shipments from Australia, and China is notable in its absence, with no purchases of Australian coarse grains showing up in the data.

This is in stark contrast to the front shipping months for Australia’s old-crop feed barley, when China was regularly buying more than 200,000 tonnes of barley each month until its demand faded in July.

Market Check head of strategy Nick Crundall said the historically low number for November shipments was no surprise, as drought had wiped the eastern states’ export surplus, and Western Australia, Australia’s key current-crop exporter, was only around 60pc through its harvest.

“Compounding this was the very little old-crop left over from the 2017-18 season that could have been exported in November,” Mr Crundall said.

“Once we ticked over into December and new-crop was piling up in Western Australia, we saw a big month of December barley exports, easily surpassing the five-year average.”

Mr Crundall said Australian ...More info on site

Whisky news Japan: Japan imports more whiskey to cover shortage of local produce
Whiskey imports from unexpected places are increasing in Japan to cover the shortage of Japanese-made spirits caused by the growing popularity of highballs, the Asahi Shimbun reported on January 21.

In autumn last year, shoppers seeking “seibo” year-end gifts were surprised to find “whiskey from Taiwan” at a Japanese and foreign liquor section of the Kintetsu department store in Osaka’s Abeno Ward.

A 700-milliliter bottle of Taiwanese Kavalan single malt whiskey was available for at least 4,500 yen ($41.50), excluding tax.

In Scotland, the homeland of the spirit, whisky is said to require at least three-year maturing periods. That type of alcoholic drink is produced in Hokkaido and other cold areas in Japan.

In Taiwan, located in a subtropical zone, whiskey matures “three to four times faster than in Scotland due to its hot climate,” according to Osaka-based Itochu-Shokuhin Co., which imports Kavalan, an emerging whiskey brand in Japan.

The Taiwanese whiskey is distilled by beverage maker King Car Group Co., which started producing whiskey more than 10 years ago.

The company entered the whiskey business with a bang in the 2000s, when private companies were permitted to make alcoholic drinks in Taiwan. Its products were chosen as the world’s best single malt whiskey in the ...More info on site

Brewery news Rwanda: Rwanda’s Bralirwa starts local production of Heineken beer
Rwanda’s biggest brewer, Bralirwa, has started production of Heineken beer at its plant in the country’s western Gisenyi province, in a move meant to reduce retail prices and boost sales on the continent, cgtn.com reported on January 19.

Local production is expected to cut retail prices by a fifth, according to the brewer.

Bralirwa, which produces local beers like Primus, has been importing Heineken made in the Netherlands.

Last year, the company announced the switch to brewing Heineken locally, saying this was made possible by investments in its plant.

The beer will also be exported to neighbouring countries. These include Burundi and Democratic Republic of Congo, as the brewer aims to meet growing demand.

The price per bottle of Heineken is expected to drop to 800 francs ($0.9231) from 1,000 francs, once local production kicks in.

Heineken is the world’s second largest beer.

Rwanda joins Nigeria, Namibia, South Africa, Algeria, Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia and Ethiopia as local producers of Heineken in Africa.

Brewery news Nigeria: Guinness Plc’s brewery damaged by fire
Property worth millions of naira was lost at the weekend when fire gutted part of Guinness Plc brewery at Unity Garden Estate in Osisioma Ngwa Local Government of Abia State, The Nation Newspaper reported on January 21.

As of January 20, the Abia State Fire Service was yet to give an official statement on the fire. But sources suspect the fire started in a bush behind the factory’s fence.

Efforts by the service to stop the fire were unsuccessful. The fire spread to stacks of wooden pallets and plastic bottle cases on the premises.

The fire-fighters, however, prevented the fire from getting to a nearby pipeline belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

Head of the Abia State Fire Service Okezie corroborated suspicions the fire started from bushes behind the brewery.

Uche said the damage could have been lesser if inflammable materials, such as crates were kept away from the fence.

He said: “We got the information around 1pm and by then, the fire had become too much. We did our best and when it became wild, I called for a backup from Umuahia.

“The NNPC Aba Depot assisted us with foam chemical compound which helped us to subdue the fire. What they have inside are ...More info on site
