HUMULINONES - YES YOU CAN!

ABSTRACT
20 years ago, the International Hop Standards Committee (IHSC) was founded to take care of the production, release and maintenance of HPLC calibration standards for use in the quantitative determination of various bitter components in hops, hop products and in beer. The new standard for humulinones was prepared with the help of John Paul Maye, Bob Smith and Jeremy Leker. The validation procedure included a collaborative HPLC study in which the prospective new standard was crosschecked against a high purity, DCHA-humulinones standard. So go ahead and find your humulinones.

Brewery news USA, IL: Two new microbreweries to open this year in Huntley
Two new microbreweries are gearing up to open in Huntley this spring/summer in what are now vacant buildings, the Chicago Daily Herald reported on February 13.

Sew Hop'd Brewery, a microbrewery/taproom, plans to begin brewing operations this month, with opening set for April. It will be Huntley's first microbrewery, located at 1 Union Special Plaza, west of Route 47 and three blocks north of Main Street and downtown.

Renovations also are expected to begin soon for Villa Park-based More Brewing Company's new brewery and restaurant at 13980 Automall Drive off Freeman Road -- formerly a Chevrolet dealership -- on the village's south side. The company plans to begin brewing in late spring and open by late summer, according to company officials.

Union Special, which has been operating in Huntley since 1949, is the oldest, largest and the one of the last industrial sewing machine manufacturers in the country. Its owners -- craft beer enthusiasts Terry Hitpas, Tom Bartel and Lance Lamb -- are part of the owner/investor group funding building and site improvements to accommodate Sew Hop'd Brewery.

The brewery will be housed in a renovated, 2,700-square-foot vacant space within the former Borden Dairy section at the southeast corner of the manufacturing plant. It ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VT: Collaborative Brewing Co. preparing for a launch in Waitsfield
Good beer starts with clear water. Or in the case of Collaborative Brewing Co., it starts with Clear Water Filtration, BurlingtonFreePress.com reported on February 11.

That’s the name of the Waitsfield water-treatment business run by Steve Parker and his sister, Jen Fleckenstein, in Mad River Park. It’s also the location of the newest brewery to hit the already-sudsy Mad River Valley, which is home to Lawson’s Finest Liquids and Cousins Brewing.

Parker and Fleckenstein are partners in Collaborative with their tax preparer, Craig Isvak, and brewer Brett Seymour, all of whom live in the Mad River Valley. Seymour and Parker are childhood friends.

When Collaborative Brewing starts selling beer as early as next month, Seymour will become the first winner of the Make the Cut homebrew contest to open his own brewery. His victory in 2015 for his schwarzbier, according to Seymour, confirmed there was something special in that dark German-styled brew.

Isvak, who owns Associates in Accounting in South Burlington, keeps a keg in his office. “They mentioned beer,” he said of his now-partners in Collaborative Brewing, “and my eyes lit up – beer!”

That was in August 2017. Four months later, the partners had a pilot system going. Fleckenstein said they and a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Delta Beer Lab to become Madison’s newest brewery
The craft beer explosion continues here in Madison. Delta Beer Lab is the newest brewery to come to the capitol city. They’re experimenting, formulating, and testing some new hoppy hypotheses when it comes to the chemistry of beer, WMTV reported on February 13.

“Our walls are white, our floors are polished concrete, and most of our table surfaces are the exact same material you’ll find in a science lab,” said Chief Beer Officer Tim Piotrowski who goes by “Pio”.

“Pio” is the brains behind the science. He’s been brewing beers for 10 years now.

“One of the things I learned really early on in my career is to make beers for the guest,” said Pio.

In addition to brewing great beer, Pio plans to give back to the city of Madison.

“All of our employees will be paid a living wage, we won’t accept tips in the tap room,” he said.

If you do tip the bartender, that money will be collected and given to a chosen local non-profit organization each month.

"We have an opportunity in business to be better. To not just take from our community, but to be a part of our community. To be responsible in employment, to be responsible with profit,” said ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Ike and Oak Brewing Co. already open in Woodridge
The drink menu at Ike and Oak Brewing Co. isn't for the indecisive. The newly opened Woodridge brewery boasts nearly a dozen inventive beers that are brewed in-house, from cream ales and IPAs to chocolatey stouts and porters, in addition to an assortment of honey- and lemon-infused "draft cocktails." And all that to consider even before you open the gastropub-style food menu, Patch.com reported on February 12.

Ike and Oak hosted its soft opening on Friday, February 8, welcoming a crowd of eager customers who packed the beer hall and took in the brew tanks, which are visible from "every vantage point," according to a news release.

Seasonsed brewer Nathan Tertell, who has worked for Two Brothers and Lagunitas, works as head brewer at Ike and Oak and has uses a 10-barrel brewing system that allows him to whip up small batches.

Brewery news USA, CO: Sparge Brewing to open its doors in Wellington next month
The town of Wellington is on the verge of getting another craft brewery, The Coloradoan reported on February 14.

Sparge Brewing plans to open in March just off Interstate 25 at 3999 George W. Bush Ave. in the town just north of Fort Collins that has grown to about 10,000 residents.

The operation will join other Wellington brewery taprooms Old Colorado Brewing and Soul Squared Brewing — which brews on a private Fort Collins farm but has a Wellington taproom.

“I fell in love with Wellington throughout the process,” Sparge founder Rich Efird said. “It is the perfect town for what we want to do.”

Sparge Brewing — named after a rinsing method used in the brewing process — plans to focus on sessionable beers.

The brewery also plans on offering a gluten-free beer made with a seeded grass called millet.

“We will emphasize refreshing, easy-drinking but flavorful beers,” Efird said. “I came to the conclusion that if everybody will drink it, people will stay longer.”

Efird became interested in craft beer about a decade ago and began homebrewing about eight years ago. He grew up in a military family — he was born in North Carolina, later lived in Germany and graduated from a South Dakota ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Off The Rails Brewing opens its doors in Washington
A new brewery, offering burgers, pizza and more, has opened its doors in Washington. Off The Rails Brewing is located at 111 S. Murphy Ave., KGO-TV reported on February 14.

This new spot -- located in the former Firehouse Grill and Brewery -- bills itself as an "American brewpub," which specializes in craft beers and "fresh food made of local ingredients," according to its website.

The brewery offers six craft brews, like the Trainwreck ale, a Bavarian hefeweizen and the Dub Nation Dubbel Belgian brown ale.

With a 4.5-star rating out of 14 reviews on Yelp so far, the new brewery seems to be a welcome addition to the neighborhood.

Yelper Ben P. said, "I like the new format and layout compared to Firehouse. It's bright, the floor is level and the rooms have been opened up."

Off The Rails Brewing is open from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Saturday.

Brewery news USA, GA: 5 Seasons Brewing Company closing down its Atlanta West Midtown location
The West Midtown location of 5 Seasons Brewing Company is set to close this weekend, less than two months after the closure of its Sandy Springs location, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported on February 12.

The Westside location will be open for regular business hours through Feb. 17. A “fun celebration” will be held Feb. 23, followed by a “drain the tanks” farewell celebration on Feb. 28.

The brewpub also addressed the closure on its Facebook page:

Brewery news Sri Lanka: Lion Brewery urges government to come up with fool proof mechanism against tax revenue leakages
Sri Lanka’s largest brewer has urged the government to come up with a fool proof mechanism to eliminate the tax revenue leakages stemming from non-declaration of full production volumes by spirits makers, the Daily Mirror reported on February 14.

“As is common knowledge, a number of players within the spirits industry don’t declare their full production, thereby avoiding the payment of due taxes. We are made to understand that the resulting tax leakage is of a significant value.

Thus, a system to prevent such leakage is imperative and has our full and unstinted support. We trust the Excise Department will—in consultation with the alcobev industry— find a foolproof mechanism to eliminate this leakage,” Lion Brewery (Ceylon) PLC (LION) said releasing its third quarter results on February 13.

“It is imperative that the mechanism so decided upon is indeed fool proof, is easy to implement and is not outdated in terms of technology.

It is also imperative that the mechanism is cost neutral to manufacturers and is funded entirely out of the anticipated gain in government revenue,” the company added.

Meanwhile, Lion Brewery said the government revenue from the beer industry had grown by Rs.7 billion to Rs.25 billion in the first nine months ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: Barley big winner in Western Australia’s grain harvest last year
Barley was the big winner in Western Australia’s grain harvest with an increased production of just over 5.1 million tonnes, up 35.1 per cent on 2017, the Farm Weekly reported on February 14.

In releasing its final crop report for the 2018 harvest on February 8, the Grain Industry Association of Western Australia (GIWA) said WA’s final grain yield for the 2018 season was 17.9 mln tonnes.

This includes the 16.4 mln tonnes delivered through the CBH network plus on-farm seed and feed requirements and grain traded outside of CBH.

GIWA confirmed that it was WA’s second biggest harvest ever and the most valuable at just under A$7 billion.

The end result is somewhat a surprise for the State.

Earlier predictions of 14 mln tonnes following the dry spring and several severe frost events were eclipsed by a nearly 4 mln tonnes turnaround over most parts of WA, due to the late soft finish and mild temperatures during grain fill prior to harvest.

Total tonnage for the Kwinana port zone was up 2.2 mln toonnes from 2017 and Geraldton port zone was 2 mln tonnes up from 2017.

The Esperance and Albany port zones were both down from 2017 with a decrease of 0.5 mln tonnes ...More info on site

Brewery news Luxembourg: Brasserie Nationale sees increase in both production and sales of beer in 2018
The Brasserie Nationale, Luxembourg’s largest beer maker, saw an increase in both its production and sales of beer in 2018, RTL Today reported on February 14.

In total, the brewery brewed around 15,500,000 litres of peer (155,000 hectolitres), which marks an increase of over 700,000 litres. To look at it another way, the brewery produced an additional 3 million half-pints of beer compared to 2017.

This also was reflected in the brewery's turnover, which, having increased by 4%, lay at €10.7 million.

It is likely, the brewery benefited from the long period of hot and dry weather over the summer, as its profits before tax rose by 2.5% to €4 million.

Given Luxembourgish residents' beer habits, it is hardly a surprise that the Brasserie Nationale performed well.
