Scientific Digest

Come on, let's dip hop!

ABSTRACT
Japanese researchers introduced this hopping technology already 2013 at the EBC. Dip hopping means the addition of hop after wort cooling before start of fermentation. With this hopping technology they found the following results: hop enzymes do not contribute to main fermentation, myrcene levels in finished beers are very low, which was found favourable in this case. Also, the production of 2M3MB an onion type of flavour (derived from iso-alpha acid) is supressed due to a lower H2S content in the beer.

Barley news Canada: Barley carryout forecast to be lowest in six decades
Canadian barley carryout is forecast to be the lowest in six decades, the Western Producer reported on April 11.

Agriculture Canada estimates 900,000 tonnes of carryout. Index Mundi has charted ending stocks going back to 1960 and they have never been lower.

Neil Townsend, senior market analyst with FarmLink Marketing Solutions, said the low stocks are the result of a combination of factors.

Canadian barley acres are hovering around the 60-year lows and there have been good malting barley exports to China, but the biggest factor is that the Canadian feed industry has been a voracious consumer of the crop.

“Animal numbers in Western Canada are pretty strong, so we’ve had good feeding of barley,” he said.

Feed prices vary widely but feedlots have commonly paid $5 per bushel for old crop feed barley in 2018-19. The last couple of years the price has been below C$4 and before that C$2.50 to C$3 was the norm.

“This is a very strong price right now,” said Townsend.

He wouldn’t be surprised if old crop prices appreciated further in the May/June/July period if dry conditions persist on the Prairies and buyers decide to stock up.

New crop feed barley prices are about C$1 per bushel lower, indicating that the market ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Brick Brewing achieves record annual EBITDA of C$10.1 mln last year
Brick Brewing Co. Limited, Ontario’s largest Canadian-owned brewery, released on April 11 results for the fourth quarter and full year ended January 31, 2019. Brick posted record annual EBITDA of C$10.1 million on a net revenue of C$53.7 million. EBITDA for the fourth quarter was +57% or C$2.8 million.

George Croft, Brick Brewing President and Chief Executive Officer commented, “We are extremely pleased with our performance and the growth of our business in fiscal 2019. After a challenging first quarter, we delivered a significant step up in operating performance that our shareholders have grown to expect. During the last three quarters of the year we have been able to deliver growth in both volume and margin which resulted in an impressive 42% EBITDA growth versus the same three quarters in the prior year.

“Our premium portfolio posted volume gains of 3.5% in fiscal 2019. LandShark® Lager was a tremendous success story driven by the in-case promotions delivering volume in excess of 22,000 hectolitres. Our Waterloo brands were flat in fiscal 2019 in the face of craft beer proliferation and strong competitive category pressure. Our recently announced small batch brewhouse and taproom will showcase newly crafted Waterloo products and we ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KY: Mother Tucker Brewery to open second location in Louisville
A Thornton brewery is taking a leap to Louisville, BusinessDen reported on April 11.

Mother Tucker Brewery plans to open a second location in August at 1134 W. Dillon Road. Founders and husband-and-wife team Scott and Deb Tucker just signed a five-year lease on the 3,200-square-foot location off Highway 36.

“It’s always been a part of the business plan to expand, rather than getting into distribution,” Scott Tucker said. “It’s always been to have several small, neighborhood tasting rooms.”

The second location will open two years after the original at 2360 E. 120th Ave. in Thornton, which launched on Mother’s Day in 2017. Mother Tucker is named for Deb, the “reason and inspiration” behind the brewery, who is also, literally, Mother Tucker, Scott said.

In Louisville, the idea is to replicate the original, which centers around providing a “nice, clean, safe place for people to have a drink,” Scott said. Like the first, Mother Tucker will brew beers at its new location, as well as offer 12 beers on tap for patrons to enjoy.

Mother Tucker’s German Hefeweizen beer is its most popular, Scott said. Also on tap in Thornton is Pomegranate Key Lime IPA, Chocolate Coconut Porter Ale, and Barrel-Aged Tequila Crystal Agave Lager, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NM: Desert Valley Brewing Company to open second location in May
A West Side brewery is making its way to the heights, KOB reported on April 11.

Albuquerque’s Desert Valley Brewing Company will be opening its second location at the intersection of Wyoming and Comanche.

The brewery will take over the old digs of Red Door Brewery next to the popular Poki Poki, and they won't be only serving beer. Co-owner Chris Senutovitch told our partners at Albuquerque Business First they plan to also offer up barbecue dishes.

A grand opening is set for May.

Brewery news USA, TX: Wild Acre Brewing Company one step closing to opening second location in Fort Worth
After a unanimous vote of support from Fort Worth’s Zoning Commission on April 10, Wild Acre Brewing Company is one step closer to opening a second location in the Ridglea Hills neighbourhood, the Fort Worth Weekly reported on April 11.

The current East Lancaster location has served Wild Acre well as a brewing and event space, Wild Acre owner/founder John Pritchett said.

“We would love to get a location out in the city where we can connect with customers seven days a week in a comfortable, cozy atmosphere,” he said. “It will give us the ability to meet more people and expand our brand.”

Construction is underway at the shuttered grocery store on 6479 Camp Bowie Boulevard. The space will hold numerous tenants, Pritchett said. Around 3,000 square feet will serve Wild Acre’s new brewpub. The new location will have its own brewing system and restaurant. Pritchett hasn’t finalized the food options, but he said it will probably be “beer-centric.”

If all goes to plan, the new brewpub may open late this year. Pritchett noted that all the various licenses and permits that breweries have to apply for may delay that timeline. The brewpub needs a final OK from Fort Worth City Council. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Galaxy Brewing Co. plans new facility in Binghamton
During a City of Binghamton Planning Commission meeting on April 8, plans were unveiled to transform the former E.H Titchener Co. factory at 2 Titchener Place into Galaxy Brewing Co.'s new facility, the Press & Sun-Bulletin reported on April 10.

The brewery's location at 41 Court St. in Binghamton is currently open as a bar and tasting room.

According to planning documents obtained from the City of Binghamton, Galaxy Brewing Co. plans to transform the entire 2.96-acre lot between Murray Street and Titchener Place into a light industrial facility for the brewery, plus associated offices, a brew pub with a taproom, game room and patio, and warehousing.

The plans also include the construction of a 49-space parking lot along Clinton Street, a loading area and a four-space parking lot in the back of the building.

The brew pub is expected to span a total of 3,700 square feet, which includes a 1,900-square-foot interior and 1,800-square-foot exterior patio. The light industrial section is slated at 11,390 square feet, and the warehouse is expected to span 30,827 square feet.

According to Broome County property records, the 2 Titchener Place lot is owned by Titchener Townhomes LLC. It was purchased on Dec. 29, 2017, for ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Alewife Brewing Company planning new brewery in Sunnyside
Sunnyside will soon gain a brewery. According to Edible Manhattan, the Queens-based Alewife Brewing Company is gearing up to open a brewery in a 7,500-square warehouse space on 39th Street and Skillman Avenue this summer, Eater NY reported on April 11.

Alewife currently operates a brewpub nearby in Long Island City, specializing in rare brews that make it a beer geek destination — like a “milkshake IPA” made with peaches, vanilla, and lactose. It produces small batches of its own beer there that are only available on the premises, but the new space in Sunnyside will allow it to increase production. The brewery is owned by Patrick and Roz Donagher, who also own Manhattan bars Fools Gold, the Jeffrey, and the Rochard. Due to state liquor laws that separate alcoholic manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers, they are currently seeking to sell their Manhattan bars in order to legally run the brewery, according to Edible Manhattan.

The Sunnyside brewery will produce some of the growing brand’s popular brews, like its IPA “Death to Ego.” More IPAs, a pilsner, sours, and other options are on deck. The Sunnyside Alewife brewery is slated to start brewing and serving beers in June.

While Long Island City boasts several ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Batch Brewery to start brewing at new location in early May
Batch Brewery officials announced on April 11 their new location in Austin will open this summer, with brewing to begin in early May, Patch.com reported.

Batch Craft Beer & Kolaches owners Noah and Josh Lit said their Batch Brewery location will officially open this June. All Batch beers will be available for purchase on-tap and in cans and bottles at the family-owned and operated kolache bakery, taproom, and retail craft beer shop, officials said.

"It was always a distant dream to brew our own beer until we met John Snyder," the Lits said in a prepared statement. "His beers inspired us to take the plunge. We added our good friend Heath Shuford to head up the IPA program and never looked back. We went with a smaller brewhouse to always keep the beers fresh, rotating, and only available in-house."

Leading the brewing at Batch Brewery is Head Brewer John Snyder and Heath Shuford, who will be spearheading the IPA program. Batch Brewery will focus on table beers, IPA's, barrel-aged sours, culinary beers, and sour IPA culinary table beers. The first releases will be a Cabaret Barrel Aged Saison, with honey and pink peppercorn, and a Hazy IPA.

Designed by Josh and Laura Lit, the ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea & USA: South Korea’s Booth Brewing successfully conquers craft beer lovers out of its US production facility
Booth Brewing, one of South Korea's most visible craft beer producers, doesn't make its beer where Korean beer giants Hite and OB produce their ubiquitous watery lagers. Instead, most of Booth's beers are brewed in Eureka, the California city near the Oregon border most known for redwood trees and marijuana cultivation, KPBS reported on April 9.

Booth launched in Seoul in 2013 after husband and wife team Sunghoo Yang, a former investment analyst, and Heeyoon Kim, a former doctor, wanted to help correct the dearth of craft beer in South Korea. Part of their impetus was an article that ran a few years prior in The Economist. "Brewing remains just about the only useful activity at which North Korea beats the South," the article concluded, while declaring North Korea's government-brewed Taedonggang as more memorable than South Korea's beer offerings.

Like many South Koreans, Yang and Kim wanted to prove that conclusion wrong. So they teamed up with Daniel Tudor, the article's author, and opened a pub that served pizza and craft beer out of a Seoul alley. Their patriotic origin story and quirky branding — their bottles have colorful labels featuring the adventures of a blue creature called the Boothman — quickly ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Barge Brewing discussing possible location in the hamlet of Bergholz
Western New Yorkers enjoy new scenes when it comes to food and beverages. And one thing many enjoy around here is locally crafted beer, the Niagara Frontier Publications reported on April 11.

The Town of Wheatfield could see a new addition with WNY favorites in the near future, as Barge Brewing has discussed a possible location in the hamlet of Bergholz with the Wheatfield Local Development Corp.

Talks are preliminary, as WLDC Chairman Bill Wagner stated in an email on April 8.

Barge Brewing has one current location along the Erie Canal in Medina, which Wagner said has been quite successful.

On the company’s website, it reads, “We create a broad scope of world class beer on a nano scale, using fresh, local ingredients. Beers steeped in local flavor – both cultural and culinary. Good beer. Fresh beer. Real beer.”

According to the website, in addition to fresh, local ingredients, beers include whole-cone hops, all grain and no extracts, and rare and unique yeast cultures. Creation includes traditional and artisan recipes, modern equipment and techniques, complex flavor profiles, and cask and bottle conditioning.

The site also lists a growler club, private events, catering menus and home brewer clubs and classes as part of the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Clothing company Patagonia sues AB InBev for selling Patagonia beer
Clothing company Patagonia is suing Budweiser's parent company for selling a beer that bears its name and evokes its rugged, environmentally friendly brand and logo, CNN reported on April 10.

AB InBev was granted a trademark to sell Patagonia beer in the United States in 2012, but the company sat on the name until 2018, when it started selling beer with the branding.

Patagonia, the clothing company, accuses AB InBev of trademark infringement for copying the brand's name and aesthetic on its beer. AB's Patagonia beer packaging includes a silhouette of a mountain and the word Patagonia in bold lettering.

What's worse, the clothing company said, is AB InBev has been selling the brew and its own Patagonia-branded apparel at pop-up stores at ski resorts, which is Patagonia clothing territory, the company said in the suit.

"In short, AB has done everything possible to make it appear as though this PATAGONIA beer is sold by Patagonia."

The company said that AB InBev "has gone as far as creating a logo that is strikingly similar to Patagonia's famous mountain silhouette logo that has appeared continuously for decades on millions of products."

In a short emailed statement to CNN, an AB InBev spokesperson wrote the company will fight ...More info on site

Brewery news Ireland: Beer remains Ireland’s most popular drink of choice
Ireland’s most popular alcoholic drink of choice has been revealed and there are no prizes for guessing what’s come out on top, the Irish Post reported on April 11.

Beer remains the tipple of choice on the Emerald Isle, according to a new report published by Drinks Industry Group of Ireland (DIGI) and Dublin City University (DCU).

The report reveals beer made up 45.2% of all alcohol purchased over the past year.

That represents a 2.7% increase in consumption levels compared with figures for the previous year.

Wine came in a distant second, with an overall share of 26.7%, which represents a 2% decline on the year before.

Spirits are an increasingly popular choice, with whiskey and the like accounting for 20.5% of all the alcohol imbibed in Ireland last year.

That represents an impressive 5.6% increase on last year.

This means that of all alcohol imbibed last year, 20.5% of it was whiskey, vodka, gin and other popular spirits.

Cider remained someway off the pace, despite a 0.4% increase, with pints of Strongbow and other such tipples accounting for just 7.5% of all booze drunk.

Commenting on the report, Rosemary Garth, chairwoman of DIGI and director of communications and corporate affairs at Irish Distillers, noted that increasing popularity ...More info on site

Brewery news Thailand: Government considering alcohol-free beer tax hike
Thailand’s government said it’s considering a tax increase on alcohol-free beer in order to discourage drinkers from eventually switching to alcoholic drinks, Khaosod English reported on April 12.

Patchara Anantasilpa, director general of the Excise Department, announced on April 11 a possible increase in tax on zero-alcohol beer, a recent entry into the Thai beverage market.

Patchara said that the Health Ministry wants non-alcoholic beers to be branded as “malt drinks” instead of “beer” on the basis of public health concerns. He reasoned that once drinkers develop a taste for non-alcoholic beers, they will likely progress to the alcoholic version.

Non-alcoholic beer is currently taxed at 14 percent – around 5 to 12 baht per can – making prices anywhere between 39 to 99 baht per can. This is compared to the 22-percent tax slapped on alcoholic beer, according to Patchara.

Patchara added that there should be clarity on the matter after Songkran, or later next week. He also said that cough syrups, which sometimes contain minor amounts of alcohol, could be affected by the tax increase if approved. This is because non-alcoholic beer or “malt drinks” are actually defined by alcohol contents of 0.5 percent.

Brewery news India: AB InBev planning to launch two non-alcoholic beers in India
Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) is planning to launch two non-alcoholic beers in India, Mint reported. The Belgian beverage maker is set to launch Budweiser 0.0 and Hoegaarden 0.0 in the next three months. Till then, the products will be imported into India, the report stated.

The new drinks are for "those who don't want to drink alcohol, but want to socialise and that’s a way for them to be included in the beer category," Ben Verhaert, Business Unit President, South Asia, AB InBev, told the newspaper.

AB InBev’s plan comes six months after United Breweries (UBL) launched two non-alcoholic beverages in India - lemon-based drink Radler and non-alcoholic beer Heineken 0.0.
