Brewery news UK & Ireland: Big brewers betting big on non-alcoholic beer
Beer drinking is so ingrained in British (and Irish) life that any mention of choosing non-alcoholic versions of the stuff provokes ire. What is the point of drinking beer without booze in it, the sceptics ask, while others rail against the supposedly bad taste, the Irish Times reported on April 18.

Yet when Anna Brown, a 26-year-old consultant living in London, goes to the pub with colleagues, her drink of choice is a non-alcoholic lager called St Peter’s Without. “I still get to take part in the fun without compromising on things that are important to me,” she said, referring to her desire to avoid hangovers and cut back on calories.

While beer purists may recoil, more people are opting for low- and no-alcohol brews, and Europeans in particular have taken to the stuff.

Alcohol consumption is on the decline in many western countries as people seek healthier lifestyles and all things “wellness” remain firmly in fashion. In the UK, nearly a quarter of 16- to 24-year-olds say they do not drink alcohol, up from 19 per cent in 2005, and the increase is even greater among 25- to 44-year-olds, according to the Office for National Statistics. In the US, alcohol sales by ...More info on site

Brewery news Kenya: EABL says no threat to beer supplies from ongoing dry weather
Kenya’s beer supply is safe for the rest of the year as EABL says it has enough grain stock to sustain production, The Star reported on April 18.

This means, the long drawn drought beer-lovers will still find their favourite brands at their locals throughout the year.

Speaking during a media briefing on April 17, the beer maker said despite the ongoing dry weather, the firm’s production was safe for the next nine months.

“With the delay in long rains, it is expected that some of our crop pockets may be affected in terms of yields, but this will not affect production,” East African Malting Ltd (EAML) general manager Lawrence Maina told The Star.

He said EAML, a subsidiary of EABL, has already set up a team to mitigate effects of the looming drought.

The continued dry weather is likely to affect the planting season for barley, which starts in May in some areas, but the company is confident that with barley planted in various highland areas, supply would not be affected.

Maina said the supply of sorghum would not be affected as it is a hardy crop and is grown in areas that do not receive a lot of rainfall.

“We are very keen ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: CMBTC expects 5-10% increase in Canada’s barley seeded area this season
As seeding approaches in Western Canada, industry pundits are busy making forecasts for 2019 crop areas. The industry is projecting barley seeded area to rise given strong prices for feed barley, reasonable values for malting barley and very low overall barley carryout this year. The most recent Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada report, released April 16, forecasts barley area in Canada will increase by 14% in 2019 to 3.0 mln hectares (7.4 million acres), with production projected at 9.7 million tonnes. Most people in the industry, however, expect a more modest increase in area, closer to 5-10%, with production expected to rise to between 9 – 9.5 million tonnes (compared with 8.4 million tonnes in 2018). At the CMBTC, they are expecting a 9% increase in area, with production forecast at 9.3 million tonnes. In 2018, malting barley accounted for 56% of total barley seeded area in Western Canada, or 1.41 million hectares (3.5 million acres), with the balance in general purpose varieties (primarily feed). For 2019, the CMBTC expects both feed and malting barley area to rise, with malting barley area to account for 55% of barley seeded area in Western Canada, or 1.57 million hectares (3.9 million ...More info on site

Barley news France: Barley crop rating falls in week to April 15
FranceAgriMer in a weekly report on April 19 rated 77 percent of French winter barley as good/excellent, down from 79 percent a week earlier, while the equivalent spring barley rating fell to 89 percent from 91 percent.

The farm office said 81 percent of French soft wheat crops were in good or excellent condition by April 15, down from 83 percent a week earlier. That compared with 78 percent at the same stage last year.

For maize, 29 percent of the expected area for this year’s harvest had been sown, up from 16 percent a week earlier.

Barley news Ukraine: Ukraine grain outlook bolstered by trade disputes
Argus Media is reporting that the outcome of trade disputes between China and the US and Canada will be a key factor in determining Ukrainian export flows in the near future.

Negotiations between US and Chinese trade officials could draw to a close at the end of this month. Whatever the outcome, the end of the process is likely to dictate the direction of global grain prices and redirect international grain trade flows.

If a trade deal is reached, China will import up to 4.3 million tonnes per year of corn from the US, Chinese trading firm Donlink Grain and Oil's director Renault Quach said. If no deal is agreed, the offtake will be far lower, and this could open opportunities for Ukraine to further increase its market share in China. Ukraine has been the largest single corn supplier to China since 2015, and does have theoretical capacity to export more; its overall exports were around 4.5 million t below production in 2018–19, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Trade tensions could also affect the fundamentals for barley. China could import feed barley, which it uses interchangeably with sorghum, from Ukraine should no agreement with the US be reached. China depends ...More info on site
