Brewery news Canada, ON: Lord Simcoe Brewing coming to Toronto soon
A new brewing company honouring an important figure in the history of Canada will soon be launching its first brand, Canadian Beer News reported on April 22.

Lord Simcoe Brewing has been founded by Tim Bristow in partnership with Berkeley Events, a company that operates six premium event venues in downtown Toronto. Its name pays tribute to John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, and the founder of York, the community that later became Toronto.

The company’s flagship beer is 1791 Lager (4.7% abv), which is named for the year that Simcoe took office as Lieutenant Governor. Brewed in partnership with an established Toronto brewery, 1791 Lager is described as “clean, approachable and highly drinkable, [with] distinct herbal aromas derived from a variety of imported German hops and hints of sweet Canadian malt.”

1791 Lager will be rolled out in 473 ml cans and on draught through the spring and summer, and will be available at licensed events at the Berkeley venues, as well as select bars and restaurants in Toronto.

The company has also purchased a farm called Lake Simcoe Farms just east of Cannington, approximately 100 km northeast of Toronto, where ingredients will be grown for Lord Simcoe beers ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA & NV: Mammoth Brewing Company to purchase Great Basin Brewing Company
A Reno favorite, Great Basin Brewing Company, is teaming up with Mammoth Brewing Company to expand their label, FoxReno.com reported on April 22.

Mammoth Brewing Company has signed an asset purchase agreement with an intent to acquire Great Basin Brewing Company, with the goal to close this summer.

Once the deal is finalized, MBC and GBBC will have the opportunity to immediately increase sales from approximately 15,000 barrels of beer a year to 40,000 barrels collectively.

“MBC has always been so limited by our production ability due to the size of our brew pub equipment,” said Sean Turner, co-owner and President, MBC. “This deal will allow us to grow and fulfil the demand for our craft beers.”

By cementing MBC and GBBC annual production beers at the Taps and Tanks facility, this deal will allow both breweries greater experimentation at the other three locations.

“We want to make it known that Mammoth Brewing Company will not replace Great Basin Brewing Company, its brand or any of its facilities, or vice versa,” Turner said. “In fact, it is our intent to distinctly and uniquely grow both brands independently.”

Both breweries are known pioneers in the brewing industry in their respective regions. GBBC is the oldest and largest ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KS: Sandhills Brewing Company to open its doors on April 26
Sandhills Brewing Company is opening in downtown Mission this weekend. The microbrewery at 5612 Johnson Drive opens for business on Friday, April 26.

Founded by twin brothers Jonathan and Pippin Williamson, Sandhills Brewing Company opened their first microbrewery in Hutchinson, Kansas. Jonathan Williamson and the brothers’ business partner Joe Cizek, who have more than two decades combined of brewing experience, will run the Mission brewery.

The brewery is the third to open on Johnson Drive in recent weeks, following Servaes Brewing Company and Transport Brewery in downtown Shawnee.

On opening day, Sandhills Brewing Company will offer eight to 12 beers on tap, including a few beers that are brewed at their Hutchinson location. They plan to have a variety of oak-aged craft beers with a focus on sour, hoppy and mixed-fermentation beers.

Designed for an intimate, family-friendly environment, the taproom is filled with natural light and features hand-crafted murals of Kansas birds (for which the craft beers are named). The barrels of beer still in the brewing process sit just behind the bar, adding to the taproom’s open floor plan concept.

“All of the beer is brewed 20 feet from where it’s served,” said Jonathan Williamson, adding that all production, packaging and serving will be ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CT: Maple View Farm gets approval to open own brewery in Granby
Jason and Kate Bogli see the brewing of beer as a natural extension of what their farm, Maple View Farm in Granby, means to them, the Hartford Courant reported on April 22.

“We kind of make everything around here,” Jason Bogli said. “We grow our own food. We have a garden. It’s an extension of that, making our own food, which stems from our love for good food and drink."

Last March, the Boglis were given approval from the town’s Planning and Zoning Commission to open the Brewery at Maple View Farm. A little less than a year later, they did just that, opening the doors to their renovated barn brewery to the public on March 2. A grand opening will be held on April 27 to celebrate.

The farm itself has been in the family since Jason Bogli’s grandparents, Bill and Evelyn Bogli, purchased the property in 1950. The brewery adds to the farm’s focus on meat, vegetables, and eggs - which it sells from its farm store - as well as programming such as horse riding lessons.

With all that to offer, and the chance to see a live, working farm, the Boglis think they can make their brewery standout from the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: Ghost Hawk Brewing Company officially open in Clifton
The line began forming over an hour before the official ribbon cutting and grand opening. And by the time the doors officially opened on April 20, more 100 beer lovers were on line, around the corner and down the sidewalk for Passaic County's first craft brewery, TAPinto.net reported on April 21.

Ghost Hawk Brewing Company officially opened its doors with a grand opening and ribbon cutting attended by Clifton’s Mayor James Anzaldi, its co-owners, families and employees.

Of the 21 counties in New Jersey, Passaic was one of two counties that did not have a local brewery. After April 20, only Salem County remains without a local brewery.

It’s been a labor of love almost two years in the making for its co-owners, Tom Rachelski and Steve Bauer, who originally planned to open five months ago.

“It’s been crazy,” said Bauer, co-owner and vice president. “I would have never imagined it would have taken this long.”

“It wasn't an easy ride as we thought two years ago,” said Rachelski, co-owner and president. “And overcoming all these challenges just makes it a more amazing experience”

Those challenges included an extensive power and utility upgrade which delayed the opening.

One of the initial challenges for Rachelski and Bauer ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Hop Forged Brewing Company to become Hanford’s first ever brewery
Downtown Hanford is the new home to Hop Forged Brewing Company. The brewery is the first ever to open up in Hanford and has been in the works for several years, the Hanford Sentinel reported on April 20.

Owners Brian Alves and AJ Soares celebrated their Grand Opening on April 20.

Alves and Soares have been dreaming up Hop Forged Brewing Company for eight years, starting in their garage.

“We weren’t big drinkers at the time, but we loved the science and art behind it,” Alves said, adding they fell in love with the challenge of creating the perfect beer.

Alves and Soares talked about having their own brewery from the beginning and they have finally seen that dream become a reality.

Alves’ father, Frank Alves, purchased the property at 106 W. Seventh Street about a year ago. The property was built in the early 1800s and had been vacant for nearly 20 years.

Family and friends have worked hard to get the brewery ready for the opening day.

Hop Forged Brewing Company started with six craft beers on tap, including favorites: Tropical IPA, Hazelnut Brown Ale and Blonde Ale.

Their goal for the end of the year is to have 12 options on tap and eventually ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: Village Brewing officially open in Somerville
Village Brewing celebrated its official opening April 19, 2019, NJNext reports.

When mechanical contractor and craft beer connoisseur Gary Frank moved to Somerville two years ago, he fell in love with the community. While he was out exploring the area, his new hometown inadvertently led him to his next business venture when a vacancy at 34 W. Main St. caught his eye. The expansive building, formerly home to Woolworth’s department store, featured 15,000 square feet of retail space available in the heart of downtown, and it gave the Frank an idea.

The contractor, who’d previously built breweries and other large-scale projects for his clients, called his sister Iris and suggested that they start their own brew pub and restaurant.

“I said, ‘Are you out of your mind?'” Iris recalled, “and then we just sat down and thought about it for a second, and said, ‘Let’s do it!'”

The pair, whom Iris refers to as “partners in crime,” have teamed up with expert restauranteur Scott Eadie, who will serve as general manager of Village Brewing Co., slated to open in early to mid summer.

“Scott’s coming off a 17-year stint with Harvest Group,” Iris explained. “We’ll have American-style healthy dishes but comfort food too. It’ll be ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Taft’s Brewing Company to open Columbus location
Cincinnati brewery Taft’s Brewing Company will take its award-winning beer, New Haven-style pizza and entertaining vibe to a sizable indoor/outdoor space to Gravity—an ethos-driven community of apartments, offices, retailers and more rising in Columbus neighborhood Franklinton, Brewbound reported on April 19.

Taft’s Brewpourium will occupy 5,800 square feet and an extensive outdoor patio just outside of Downtown, serving up hand-crafted Cincinnati-brewed beers and coal-fired, New Haven-style pizza noted for a thin crust that’s crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside and sparely topped. Taft’s plans to include a game room and a stage for music, comedy nights and more in the casual and light-filled space. It hopes to open in November 2019.

“We love that Franklinton is an up-and-coming area. And we love the neighborhood’s arts culture, which really fits the roots of our brand. We think it’s going to be a home run,” said Taft’s managing partner David Kassling. “Columbus, like Cincinnati, has a great population of beer drinkers, and they’ve shown us in our bar and grocery business that there’s a demand for our beer. It’s truly an honor for our whole team to have the opportunity to take the leap to another great Ohio city.”

Based in Cincinnati, Taft’s Brewing ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Bad Habit Brewing has to move to new location to meet demand
If any business can be considered “too successful,” it’s Bad Habit Brewing in St. Joseph – so sudsily successful, in fact, that it had to find a new location, the Waite Park Newsleader reported on April 19.

That new place is at 25 College Ave. N., just a stone’s throw from its current location at 15 Minnesota St. E. Bad Habit fans – they are legion – are excited about the new place, which will open for business Saturday, May 4. The Bad Habit Facebook site has been abuzz for weeks with the excitement, including an oft-repeated question, “When’s it going to open? When’s it going to open?”

Owner and founder Aaron Rieland had planned an earlier opening date, but the federal government shutdown in late December and January caused a delay. That is because in order to open, Rieland needed federal approval of an amended notice to open an alcohol-related business in a new location. But now Rieland and his staff are ready to roll out the barrel.

For months, an ambitious total-restoration project has been underway on the inside and outside of what was once a bank and later St. Joseph City Hall and Police Station. That building went up for ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: New Belgium’s newest brewery location opens at Denver International Airport
New Belgium’s newest brewery location opened on April 18 at Denver International Airport, 9News.com reported.

The 125-seat venue is located on Concourse B at DIA. Along with 20 beers on tap, the newly-built space also features a full bar and a kitchen offering locally-sourced food selections, according to a release from DIA.

“We’re excited to give thirsty travelers the chance to experience the independent Colorado beer scene inside the airport, whether it be a first taste upon arrival or a departing cheers,” said New Belgium’s Director of Retail Development and Operations Leah Pilcer. “New Belgium is synonymous with Colorado, and we’ve made it a point to create a fun atmosphere that embodies a sense of place while showing off our local pride.”

Travelers at DIA can enjoy first-to-market-beers and rare one-offs, as well as beer-centric cocktails, the release says.

Brewery news UK: Diageo identifies 12% growth opportunity in the UK
Diageo has identified a 12% growth opportunity, translating to £5.2 billion, for the UK alcohol industry over the next three years, the Harpers Wine & Spirit Trade Review reported.

The expected growth opportunity for the combined on and off-trade was revealed on April 23 in a new report released by Diageo GB looking at the key changes in the market over the last 10 years and future trends.

Outlining opportunities, the Diageo Drinks Report identifies four key growth platforms - Balanced Choices (drinks choices to fit with all lifestyles including low and no alcohol), Make the moment (capturing moments of socialising in and out of the home), Exploration (tapping the increasing consumer thirst for trying new drinks) and Celebration (premium drinks to celebrate special times).

Focusing on those would help the category grow to £46.7 billion by 2022 from £41.5 billion in 2017, according to the report, which is based on historic and predictive IWSR data to identify the growth opportunity for the future.

“As categories grow, decline – and in some cases fuse – it becomes clear that we can no longer take an isolated sub-category view. This is now out of step with the way our consumers see the world,” said Dayalan ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: Barley demand strengthens as it remains cheapest feed grain
While the autumn break is widely sought across Australia, there is no general rain forecast, The Weekly Times reported on April 23.

Up-country demand for barley has grown as it remains the cheapest feed grain but supplies are limited. Other than the obvious drought-impacted production last season, supplies of barley from interstate have been restrained.

Barley for feed has been transported into the New South Wales markets via train and road but unlike wheat there has been a lack of bulk shipping of barley from Western Australia.

Grain traders have shipped in bulk cargoes of malting barley but the pricing of barley in the eastern states has been too low to justify the logistics cost of bulk shipments.

Wheat prices continue to weaken and barley prices strengthen. Two distinct tiers are appearing that restrict access to cereal grain demand. Wheat prices may be weakening for the stockfeed mills based in Melbourne but buyers in regional markets are not seeing the same softening market.

Grain for on-farm feeding of livestock is on the rise, particularly in central western NSW. Ewes are lambing and the nutritional needs of sheep are high. Many grain traders are holding wheat stocks bought from harvest pending sales this year. Aggressive pricing ...More info on site

Brewery news Croatia: Kaltenberg beer to be brewed in Croatia again
After 25 years, Kaltenberg beer has returned to Croatia. Namely, in Kukuljanovo near Rijeka, a production facility has been opened which should, together with a nearby restaurant, revive the popularity which this Bavarian beer had in the 1990s, especially in southern Croatia, Večernji List reported on April 21.

At the time when the production was located at the Jadranska Pivovara brewery, the Kaltenberg beer had the status of being a locally-produced beer. However, the business decision of Laško Pivovara brewery which bought Jadranska Pivovara led to the virtual disappearance of Kaltenberg from the Croatian market. That lasted until recently when Kaltenberg started constructing a 50,000-hectolitre-a-year plant, together with Ludwig's Gastro Pub, a restaurant right next to the brewery. The restaurant has 150 seats for guests, offering Kaltenberg as well as beers by the Austrian brewery Hirter, whose distributor for Croatia is Kaltenberg Adria.

The investment is worth 10 million euro, according to Kaltenberg Adria CEO Gordan Putanec, and the company currently employs 55 people. “Our main ambition is to return to the role of a big player in Dalmatia, where we were once the number one brewery, and we have similar ambitions for the rest of southern Croatia. That is why we ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium: Women on a mission to save craft beer in Belgium
As any bartender the length of the country will assure you, Belgium is the home of great beer, The Brussels Times reported on April 23.

The drink pumps so strongly through the veins of the nation’s culture that in 2016 UNESCO added Belgian beer to its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. And yet for over a hundred years, the country's brewing scene has been dominated by a handful of famous names and a very traditional selection of brews. Small local producers have been melting away as quickly as the head on a well-poured pint.

The decline began during the two world wars when metal, required for brewing equipment, was rationed. Small-scale breweries struggled to stay afloat, leaving larger, industrial corporations to dominate the market.

Well after the 1940s, independent beerhouses continued to be squeezed out and by 1999 there were only 100 breweries left in Belgium. At the turn of the 20th century, there had been around 3,200.

While America and Britain were already beginning to ride the wave of the craft beer revolution in the 80s and 90s, Belgium lagged behind. Was the country to become a has-been of the beer world, a country of brews better suited to museum ...More info on site

Budweiser-Budvar-owned Pardal lager is making its first appearance on the UK on-trade through Signature Brands, Imbibe reported on April 19.

Hailing from the Czech Republic, Pardal is a session lager with an abv of 3.8%. By adding Pardal to its portfolio, Signature Brands is aiming to tap into the rising trend towards lower-abv beers.

‘As the desire for low-alcohol beer increases, licensed venues should be looking at their offerings, ensuring that they are reacting to and catering for any changes in consumer demand,’ said Nic Ponticakis, head of Signature Brands.

Pardal pours slightly darker than most low-abv counterparts; it’s made with water sourced from a local artesian well, Saaz and Agnus hops and Budweiser-Budvar’s own yeast strain. The brewing process lasts for 11 days while the maturation lasts for up to a month.

Pardal joins Signature Brands’ beer portfolio which includes Cruzcampo from Spain, Dortmunder from Germany, Birra Morena from Italy and Lucky Buddha from China.

Pardal is now available through Signature Brands’ largest distribution partner LWC-Drinks. Trade prices start from £75/30lt ex-VAT, and the beer is also available in 50-litre kegs.

Barley news India: Maltsters expected to import around 50,000 tonnes of Argentinean barley next month
In May, Indian malt companies will import around 50,000 tonnes of barley from Argentina, of which 35,000 tonnes will be bought by United Breweries Ltd and the rest by Haryana-based Barmalt Malting India Ltd, a source told Cogencis.

It is estimated that the coarse grain will be bought at $260-$270 per tonne on a cost and freight basis, and the shipment will reach Adani Port in Gujarat in the last week of May, the source said.

In February, malt makers had imported around 70,000 tonnes of barley.

Currently, the barley market is seeing a supply crunch as arrivals are limited while demand from domestic stockists is on the rise. Due to this, malt makers have turned to imports to meet their requirements, said the owner of a malt company based in Jaipur.

According to the agriculture ministry's second advance estimate, India's barley output in 2018-19 (Jul-Jun) is seen at 1.92 mln tonnes, compared with 1.99 mln tonnes the previous year.
