Brewery news USA, FL: Clearwater Brewing Co. getting ready for ribbon cutting ceremony on May 4
Next Saturday, May 4, Clearwater Brewing Co. will kick off its grand opening with a ribbon cutting, the Creative Loafing Tampa reported on April 22.

Doors will be open Saturday, May 4 from 4:30 p.m. to midnight and Sunday from noon to 11 p.m.

Locals can gather at 1700 N. Fort Harrison Ave. to sample brews on tap which have yet to be released.

Super hush-hush, and a very exciting development for Clearwater.

Established in 2017 by four beer aficionado friends, Clearwater Brewing Co. is located in a renovated gas station.

The brewery’s website says that it aims to be community-oriented and socially and environmentally conscious.

Although the brewery won't launch with food offerings, it is in the works.

Until then, it will utilize a nearby barbecue joint, Homestyle BBQ, for food deliveries for customers.

During the grand opening weekend, Homestyle BBQ and food trucks will be on-site to offer bites with the new brews.

Brewery news Canada, AB: Field & Forge Brewing launches in central Alberta
A new brewery in central Alberta focussed on creating “precision crafted, highly approachable and flavourful beer” has announced the release of its first products, the Canadian Beer News reported on April 22.

Field & Forge Brewing is located in Innisfail, a town south of Red Deer in the Calgary-Edmonton Corridor, and has launched with a line-up of four core brands including Belgian Ale (6% abv), Pilsner (5% abv), Pale Ale (5.4% abv), and Gold Ale (4.2% abv).

Field & Forge beers are currently available in 355 ml cans at select licensees and beer retailers in Alberta. A taproom, restaurant, and retail store will be opening at the brewery later this year.

Brewery news Canada, SK: Warehouse Brewing to open later this year in Regina
A new brewery promising to offer “old world beers with new world styles” will be opening later this year in a historic building in Regina, the Canadian Beer News reported on April 23.

Warehouse Brewing has been founded by a group that includes president and CEO David Chadwick and brewmaster Jay Cooke (previously of District Brewing), and is setting up shop in 90-year-old building at 1377 Hamilton Street which operated as Weston Bakery from 1929 to 2012, and is now being redeveloped into a hub for local food and drink.

“A brewery seemed like the perfect way to remember the building’s long bakery history,” says Chadwick in a press release. “Not only did we want to fit into the heritage of the building, but we also wanted to honour the proud history of brewing in Saskatchewan, and create a place for the hard-working people of Regina to call home.”

“Warehouse will be a Bavarian influenced brewery, [and] our beers will be brewed in the ‘industrial’ style, using only locally sourced ingredients with standards for quality and clarity,” adds Cooke.

Warehouse Brewing is planned to open this summer, and will be joining the already operating Local & Fresh Market in the Weston Bakery building.

Brewery news USA, IL: Sew Hop'd Brewery launching on April 26 in Huntley
A new brewery is opening on April 26 in Huntley, the Northwest Herald reported.

Sew Hop'd Brewery will produce and serve craft beer in its 2,700-square-foot spot at 1 Union Special Plaza. The space will include a taproom and an outdoor patio.

Owners have said they eventually plan to distribute beer to local restaurants.

The brewery will be family friendly and will not serve food, according to its Facebook page. However, food trucks will be scheduled throughout the business' opening weekend.

Beer will not be sold to go during the opening weekend.

Hours of operation for this weekend will be 4 to 11 p.m. Friday, noon to 11 p.m. Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Huntley development services director Charles Nordman said the business was granted its certificate of occupancy on April 25.

Brewery news Canada, BC: Five Roads Brewing Co. set to join growing Langley brewing hub
Five Roads Brewing Co. is the first of a wave of new craft breweries coming to Langley, BC. Located only a few blocks away from pioneering Langley brewery Trading Post Brewing, Five Roads is set to become an integral part of a growing Langley brewing hub, What’s Brewing BC reported on April 24.

The location Five Roads occupies at #1-6263 202 Street was originally planned as the home of Metal Edge Brewing, which was slated to open in 2018. After years in planning, that project eventually ground to a halt, and Five Roads stepped into its place, led by owner Aaron Fourt and General Manager/Brewmaster Patrick Moore.

Langley is on the cusp of becoming the hub of the Fraser Valley’s craft beer scene. Set to have at least six breweries by 2020, the City and Township will become a brewery crawler’s draw in the same manner as East Vancouver’s ‘Yeast Van’ and ‘Brewery Creek’ neighbourhoods, Port Moody’s ‘Brewers Row’, and North Vancouver’s planned ‘Shipyards Brewery District’.

Set to join Trading Post and Five Roads in 2019 is Camp Beer Co., which will be within walking distance of the two other breweries. Also not far away will be Farm Country Brewing in the City ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Weyerbacher Brewing Co. files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to restructure its operations
Weyerbacher Brewing Co. Inc., the 24-year-old Easton business known for its big Belgian-style brews, is restructuring its operations.

The company on April 22 announced it has finalized a partnership with 1518 Holdings LLC, a Philadelphia private investment group that will take a 55% ownership stake in Weyerbacher. As part of that restructuring, Weyerbacher on April 22 filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as the company tries to clean up its debt and jump-start profitability.

“This is the last step in the process to investment,” said Weyerbacher Chief Operating Officer Josh Lampe, who will become president as part of the turnaround. “We were hoping to get through without entering Chapter 11, but the group of investors that we’re working with felt that it was necessary in order to move forward quickly.”

Lampe said Weyerbacher was looking for a partner for the last 18 months as financial issues weighed on the regional brewery competing in a saturated marketplace. In its bankruptcy filing, Weyerbacher said it has between 100 and 199 creditors, with estimated liabilities between $1 million and $10 million.

So while the announcement this week would appear to be miserable news, Lampe said the restructuring will allow Weyerbacher to accelerate certain projects, including opening additional taprooms ...More info on site

Brewery news Mexico: Mexico City could ban sales of cold beer in convenience stores
Mexico City residents may have to slake their thirsts with warm beer after a local lawmaker introduced a motion on April 24 to ban the sale of the cold beverage in convenience stores, The Guardian reported.

The motion – met with incredulity on social media – would modify Mexico City’s commerce laws to ban selling beer or beverages of 7% or less alcohol content, which are “refrigerated or in different conditions than the ambient temperature.”

Stores would also be required to post signs warning patrons of stiff penalties for public drinking. Mexico City’s ubiquitous mom-and-pop stores often sell cold beer in big bottles – previously promoted as family-sized – and provide plastic cups, which people use to consume the product on-site.

The motion’s author Lourdes Paz Reyes posited the new rules would rid the city of so-called “chelerías,” which sell litres of beer in seedy settings for low prices.

Many Mexicans reacted with ridicule to the prospect of buying warm beer, especially given the frequently high temperatures. The hashtag #ConLasCervezasNo (Don’t mess with our beers) trended on Twitter.

“It’s incredible that our lawmakers think of so many stupidities without previously resolving the true and serious problems in CDMX and all of Mexico,” railed one tweet.

Brewery news USA, MD: Rubber Soul Brewing Company closes its doors
Rubber Soul Brewing Company in Salisbury has closed its doors, the Delmarva Daily Times reported on April 24.

The brewery filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in late January, according to documents from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court Middle District of Pennsylvania. The brewery, founded in 2012, is located at 1930 Northwood Drive.

Rubber Soul made multiple business partnerships since its opening including downtown Salisbury's Roadie Joe's Bar and Grill.

In May 2018, the two local businesses announced they'd be opening a taproom inside the restaurant serving Rubber Soul brews.

At least six Rubber Soul beers were to be on tap at any one time, along with a selection of special and seasonal brews, said Jeremy Norton, Roadie Joe's owner in a previous interview with Delmarva Now. Patrons were to be able to fill growlers as well to take home beer to enjoy later.

This collaboration came about a year after Rubber Soul closed its taproom at Northwood Drive, citing plans to use the space for a canning operation.

Its distribution also spread across the Mid-Atlantic region.

In February, Penn Live reported that the Englewood Barn, a planned live music venue and restaurant to open in Hershey, Pennsylvania, was being delayed as its partnership with Rubber Soul ...More info on site

Brewery news Zimbabwe: Delta Corporation halts Rusape Chibuku Plant construction due to foreign currency shortage
Leading beverages manufacturer, Delta Corporation has been forced to halt the Rusape Chibuku Plant construction as the entity cannot raise enough foreign currency to import key components needed for the project, NewZimbabwe.com reported on April 26.

The entity’s corporate affairs director, Alex Makamure told delegates at a Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries meeting recently on the situation at hand.

“The brewery will be constructed in phases, starting with civil works that do not require foreign currency. The major phase is on hold due to shortage of foreign currency. The project is already behind as the company has exhausted the Chibuku Super capacity,” he said.

The new plant’s components are imported from Germany and South Africa, and have a lead time of eight months due to shipment logistics and full commissioning may take between 10 to 12 months from date of orders.

The latest development comes at a time the listed beverages manufacturer is eyeing Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev)’s Zambian and Malawian assets as the Belgian brewer exits the Sub-Saharan market.

The Zimbabwe Stock Exchange listed beverages manufacturer - which is 40 percent owned by AB InBev - in January said since the Budweiser maker was divesting out of the region, it had resolved to bid for ...More info on site

Brewery news Rwanda: Bralirwa’s pretax profit up 33% in 2018
Rwanda’s biggest brewer, Bralirwa Ltd, said on April 26 pretax profit rose 33 percent to 10.3 billion Rwandan francs ($11.39 million) in 2018, boosted by sales of its premium brand Mutzig, Reuters reported.

The rise in sales of premium beer offset weaker sales of its other beers and soft drinks, the beverage company, a subsidiary of Heineken N.V., said. Volumes fell by 13 percent to 1.7 billion Rwandan francs ($1.88 million) in 2018, it said.

Bralirwa is Rwanda’s oldest brewery and has the right to produce beer brands such as Amstel. It also produces branded soft drinks such as Coca-Cola.

Last year it launched local production of Heineken with a plan also to export it to neighboring countries. But Bralirwa said the strained relations between Rwanda and its neighbours Burundi and Uganda were affecting exports.

“This is something we hope will not last long. It being a landlocked country, it needs other countries for us to have access to the sea,” said Merid Demissie, its managing director.

“This is extremely important for us. The impact is not big but we definitely need those markets.”

The company exports around 5 percent of its total volume to the region but did not give specific details on exports to ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Heineken to invest £50 mln this year in transforming 150 of its pubs
Heineken unveiled plans to spend a record amount on transforming dozens of its pubs in the UK as the Dutch brewer searches for growth opportunities in a mature market even as the prospect of Britain leaving the EU looms, the Financial Times reported on April 25.

The world’s second largest brewer said on April 25 it will spend £50 mln this year on 150 pubs, raising its investment in hundreds of its Star Pubs & Bars businesses over the past six years to about £200 mln.

Its 2019 investment will be the most the brewer has ever spent on UK pubs in one year as, according to a company spokesperson, it sees the “value in bigger, bolder” projects. The plans for this year will create 1,200 jobs for the industry and will generate better returns for licensees, the Dutch brewer said.

Fierce competition from start-up food delivery groups and rising costs have weighed on many food and drinks companies, while others have been forced to rethink their business strategies. The London-listed City Pub Group, which specialises in craft beers and coffee, is scooping up and refurbishing often derelict places in prime UK locations such as cathedral cities and market towns as it expands ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Tamil Nadu sees 31% rise in beer sales in 2018-19
Warm weather and beer go together. So it should come as no surprise that beer is Tamil Nadu’s favourite tipple. Tasmac, the state-run coporation that sells all liquor in the state, has seen a 31% rise in beer sales in 2018-19, the Times of India reported on April 26.

Every third bottle of liquor sold in the state was beer. Data sourced by TOI revealed that 320 lakh cases of beer was sold in 2018-19, against 243 lakh cases in 2016-17. Fiscal 2017-18 is not taken into consideration as 60 per cent of TASMAC wine shops were closed after Supreme Court banned sale of liquor within 500 metres of highways from April 1, 2017. Later, closed shops were reopened following the apex court allowed the sale of liquor within 500 metres of highways in urban areas.

The growth in beer sales far outstripped the rise in total liquor sales, which was a modest 3%. Brandy continued to be the spirit of choice with 87% of tipplers. It was followed by rum and vodka for 10% and 2%. And, Chennai and its peripheries account for 25 per cent of Tasmac’s sales.

Food and beverage consultant Arasu Dennis said that majority of youth flocking city ...More info on site
