World: Molson Coors reports drop in first-quarter profit
|
Molson Coors Brewing Co.’s first-quarter profit fell compared with a year ago when its results were boosted by a one-time payment.
The beer company, which reports in U.S. dollars, says it earned US$151.4 million or 70 cents per share for the quarter.
The result compared with a profit if $278.1 million or $1.28 per share a year earlier when the company saw a $328-million cash payment related to a price adjustment for its purchase of the Miller International brewing business.
Molson Coors says its underlying profit for the quarter totalled $112.7 million or 52 cents per share compared with an underlying profit of $104.3 million or 48 cents per share a year ago.
Net sales totalled $2.3 billion, down from $2.33 billion.
The dip came due to lower volumes and unfavourable changes in foreign currency, offset by higher prices and a favourable sales mix in Europe. On a constant currency basis, net sales increased 0.6 per cent.

Canada: Brewing giant Sleeman makes bid for Calgary’s Wild Rose Brewery
|
One of Calgary’s best known craft breweries could become part of the Sleeman empire, if shareholders vote in favour of an offer by the Guelph-based beer-maker, the Calgary Herald reported on April 30.
Wild Rose Brewery — which has been in operation since 1996 and is one of Alberta’s largest craft breweries — is the target of a takeover bid by Sleeman Breweries, the third-largest brewer in Canada and a subsidiary of the Japanese multinational beer giant Sapporo Breweries Ltd.
Wild Rose is a privately held company and details of the purchase offer have not been disclosed. However, Wild Rose CEO Bill McKenzie confirmed in an email that a shareholder vote will be held May 9.
“Wild Rose has received an offer from Sleeman and we have sent this offer to our shareholders for approval,” McKenzie said. “We plan to issue a press release on Friday, May 10.”
Wild Rose Brewery, which was founded by Mike Tymchuk and Alan Yule, began producing draft beer out of a Calgary industrial park in 1996, and in 2006 moved to a converted Quonset hut at Currie Barracks. In 2013, the brewery moved to a new C$5-million, 40,000-square-foot production facility in Foothills Industrial Park.

USA, OR: Danish brewery Mikkeller to take over former home of Burnside Brewing in Portland
|
Two decades before becoming one of the world’s most acclaimed brewers, Mikkel Borg Bjergso of Denmark had his craft-beer awakening while attending college in the United States, the Herald and News reported on April 27.
It was at the hands of a Rogue Dead Guy Ale.
Now Bjergso is returning the favor to Oregon. His Danish brewery Mikkeller, maker of some of the globe’s most sought-after craft beers, will take over the former home of Burnside Brewing, opening a pop-up beer bar alongside a pop-up restaurant — a placeholder while the partnership explores the possibility of a permanent bar, restaurant and Mikkeller brewery at the site.
The Copehagen-based Mikkeller is teaming with Portland restaurant group Chefstable to open Mikkeller Portland by June 1 and operate the pop-ups through the end of the year, featuring at least 23 Mikkeller taps alongside a menu of Japanese noodles and rice dishes. The partners will then shut down the pop-ups as they pursue the feasibility of a permanent establishment.
“I’ve always loved Portland and think it is a great city,” Bjergso said. “In many respects it reminds me about Copenhagen and Scandinavia — also mentality wise — and maybe that is why I feel comfortable there.”

Canada: Government changes national beer standards
|
Nearly five years after first being proposed, the Government of Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) have announced the implementation of new compositional standards for beer in Canada, the Canadian Beer News reported on May 1.
Published on May 1 via the Canada Gazette, the official regulatory definition of “Beer” is now as follows:
(a) shall be the product of the alcoholic fermentation by yeast, or a mixture of yeast and other micro-organisms, an infusion of barley or wheat malt and hops or hop extract in potable water;
(b) shall contain at most 4% of residual sugars; and
(c) may have added to it during the course of manufacture any of the following ingredients:
(i) cereal grain,
(ii) honey, maple syrup, fruit, fruit juice or any other source of carbohydrates,
(iii) herbs and spices,
(iv) salt,
(v) flavouring preparations,
(vi) pre-isomerized hop extract,
(vii) reduced isomerized hop extract, and
(viii) food additives to which a marketing authorization applies and that are set out in the Lists of Permitted Food Additives published on the Health Canada website.
Changes from the previous definition – which was unchanged for at least three decades – include:

USA, NY: Other Half Brewing opens East Bloomfield location
|
Other Half Brewing's Ontario location is finally a reality. The Brooklyn-based brewery opened its East Bloomfield location on April 27, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported.
And in true Other Half fashion, the brewery will christen the space with a mobile can release. But this time, you can stay and enjoy a beer on draft. There will be 20 options to chose from.
Other Half, which has gained international attention for its hazy IPAs, dessert-like imperial stouts, and creative sours, purchased the former home on Nedloh Brewing, 6621 State Routes 5 And 20, last July. Nedloh abruptly closed in October 2017.
The brewery instantly brings national attention to a burgeoning Rochester beer scene.
"This feels awesome," Other Half co-founder and head brewer Sam Richardson said. "Never in a million years did I think any of this would happen. Having our second location being an almost complete polar opposite is really nice. I'm sitting here on the property right now, taking in the surroundings, and it's pretty nice. We got lucky with this space."
OH will be open seven days a week. Patrons can expect frequent visits from local food trucks.

USA, NM: Lauter Haus Brewing Company planned for Farmington, NM
|
Since committing to opening his own brewery last fall, Brandon Beard has heard all the naysayers out there who express doubt that Farmington can, or will, support two such operations, the Farmington Daily Times reported on April 27.
Downtown's Three Rivers Brewery and its various spinoff operations have the locally brewed beer market cornered after more than 20 years of dominance, or so that thinking goes, leaving little room for a start-up brewery.
Beard isn't buying that argument. He spent 15 years working at Three Rivers, serving as the business' head brewer for the last 10 years, and he figures he's learned a thing or two about the nature of the business from that experience.
"A town this size can have up to five breweries and support all of them," he said on April 26 while leading a tour of his soon-to-open Lauter Haus Brewing Company at 1806 E. 20th St. "Does it make everybody's profit margin go down a little bit? Yeah, but competition is always good."

USA, NE: Mac’s Creek Winery begins to brew beer on site
|
After one government shutdown and navigating the red tape of state and federal law, Mac’s Creek Winery has officially began to brew beer on site and now offers it on tap, the Lexington Clipper Herald reported on April 26.
Max McFarland said brewing got underway one month ago after all their state and federal paperwork checked out, the site was inspected by the Nebraska State Patrol, Fire Marshal, etc.
"We have been brewing like mad men ever since," said brewer and winemaker Seth McFarland, "The thing about brewing is that you have to be patient."
Mac’s Creek will offer four types of beer, English Mild, a young malty ale, Kolsch, a light German style beer, Pale Ale and India Pale Ales or IPA, said Seth. He added they also now carry hard cider on tap and sparkling wine.
Seth said for the moment Mac’s Creek will be brewing lighter beers but they will add new recipes and keep experimenting.
Kolsch, Pale Ale and English Mild are all on tap currently and IPA will be on tap May 9. The brews can be bottled and sold on site in 64 oz. growlers or 32 oz. squealers, beer will only be sold on location, said Seth.

USA, NY: Blue Point Brewing Company’s new brewery official opened to the public
|
Blue Point Brewing Company’s much-anticipated new brewery is officially opened to the public in its expanded location in downtown Patchogue. Long Island’s oldest local craft brewery moved from its original spot on River Avenue, which closed last year, to its more spacious 54,000-square-foot location on West Main Street in the former Briarcliffe College building, Longisland.com reported on April 27.
The second-floor space is divided into two rooms: One, a more traditional, rustic-chic tasting room with a bar, 30 taps (a few of them hooked to casks, and at least one to cider) and high tops. It overlooks Patchogue Lake on one side and a downstairs beer garden on another. The other is a welcoming dining space with an open kitchen on one end, picnic tables, more taps and a view of the brewery floor.
The new brewery will be open for tours, tastings, and tasty eats on Wednesday through Thursday 3-9 p.m., Friday, 3-10 p.m., Saturday, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m.-8 p.m.

USA, NC: 12 Bones Brewing to launch on May 1 after a long delay
|
12 Bones Brewing opens May 1, adjacent to the popular smokehouse's big new Arden location, which owners Bryan and Angela King opened earlier this year, the Asheville Citizen-Times reported on April 26.
After a long delay, partially due to the federal government shutdown's impact on TTB permitting, 12 Bones Brewing will debut with 10 house beers, with more to come.
"I've been brewing up a storm," said Scott Hettig, a longtime brewer who has been an assistant brewer with Rock Bottom in Cleveland; brewmaster with St. Francis Brewery and Restaurant in Wisconsin; and brewmaster with Mighty Miss Brewing Company.
Out of a 15-barrel system, Hettig is pulling together a line of brews to complement the 12 Bones menu.
The opening beer list will include a 5 Riverside Kolsch, an homage to the restaurant's first location, leveled in 2017 for road construction, forcing a move to 5 Foundy St. in the River Arts District.
There's also a pineapple IPA, a citrus-forward brew already on tap at the restaurant. Hettig has also made a traditional hefeweizen and a blueberry hefeweizen, nodding to one of the restaurant's rib flavors.

USA, AZ: MotoSonora Brewing Compnay to open its doors soon in Tucson
|
At 1015 S. Park Ave., in Tucson MotoSonora Brewing Company will soon open its doors. Tucson brothers Jeff and Jeremy DeConcini, cousin Eric Thu, and craft brewing veteran and former college roommate Tomme Arthur share a passion for beer and motorsports, the Tucson Foodie reported on April 26.
“We chose the name and the theme for our tasting room to celebrate the fact that beer and motorsports share a similar passion and history in both the Old World and the New,” Jeremy said.
If you’re a beer snob, you should recognize Tomme Arthur. The LA Times featured him in February for his work with Lost Abbey Brewing Co. Furthermore, two of the beers from Lost Abbey ranked on Beer Advocate’s top 100 rated beers in the world.

USA: AB InBev drops US trade case against Heineken
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev SA said it’s dropping a U.S. trade case against Heineken NV to focus instead on getting money from its rival beermaker, Bloomberg reported on April 29.
Heineken is no longer importing its Blade or Brewlock beer dispensing systems into the U.S., so there’s no need to proceed with a patent-infringement case at the U.S. International Trade Commission, AB InBev said in a filing. The agency only has the power to block imports and can’t award damages, so AB InBev said it’s turning to the courts for cash.
“We are pleased to have achieved our desired outcome in this proceeding -- namely Heineken’s withdrawal of its products from the market,” Pablo Jimenez, a spokesman for AB InBev said in a statement. “Given we have achieved our desired result, we see no further need for the requested relief from the USITC.”
When it filed its trade complaint against Heineken, AB InBev also filed a civil lawsuit in New York that was put on hold. AB InBev said it will ask that the case be reopened. It didn’t say how much it believes Heineken owes in damages.

Australasian food and beverage company Lion is to open a London brewery for its craft beer brand Little Creatures, following its acquisition of UK breweries Fourpure and Magic Rock, The Drinks Business reported on April 29.
Following its acquisition of Bermondsey brewer Fourpure in July 2018 and Huddersfield’s Magic Rock last month, Lion is expanding its investment in UK beer.
The company is to open a taproom and restaurant behind new development Granary Square in King’s Cross. The 557sqm site features a six-hectolitre brewery, taproom and restaurant.
Lion first introduced Little Creatures to the London market in 2017 when it ran a pop-up in Elephant & Castle. As well as London, it is also opening new venues in San Francisco, Taipei and Auckland.
According to The Grocer, head brewer at Little Creatures, Lara Smith, has relocated to London from Australia in order to supervise the project.
Lion UK and Europe regional director Toby Knowles told the title that the investment in the UK would “embed the Little Creatures brand in the community, provide greater awareness and ultimately market the brand to an audience who already have a real interest in craft”.

Japan & UK: Asahi adds former Fuller’s brands to its UK portfolio

Japanese beer giant Asahi has confirmed the addition of former Fuller’s brands London Pride, Frontier and Cornish Orchards to its UK portfolio, following its acquisition of the British brewer, The Drinks Business reported on April 29.
The brands will join Peroni Nastro Azzurro, Asahi Super Dry, Pilsner Urquell and Meantime as part of Asahi’s super premium portfolio.
Fuller’s sold its cider, soft drinks, wine, distribution and wholesaling business, along with its beer and brewing operations, to Asahi earlier this year in a deal worth £250 million.
“All of us at Asahi UK are thrilled to be bringing these much loved cask ale and cider brands into our portfolio,” Tim Clay, Asahi’s UK managing director, said.
“Through our existing Super Premium Brand portfolio, distribution network, customer marketing and sales expertise we aim to extend and grow our new range across the UK and Ireland – to offer our customers the most comprehensive suite of Premium Beer and Cider brands.”
