Brewery news USA: Boston Beer Company and Dogfish Head Brewery sign $300 mln merger agreement
Eight years ago, Dogfish Head and Boston Beer Company teamed up to brew a collaboration beer for the annual SAVOR craft beer and food pairing experience.

On May 9, the two companies announced the signing of a definitive merger agreement valued at about $300 million, Brewbound reported.

The deal is expected to close in the second quarter.

As part of the transaction, Dogfish Head co-founders Sam and Mariah Calagione will receive about 406,000 shares of Boston Beer stock, valued at $314.60 per share, making them the largest non-institutional shareholders in the company, behind Boston Beer founder Jim Koch.

Meanwhile, existing Dogfish Head shareholders will receive $173 million in cash, and Sam Calagione will obtain a seat on Boston Beer’s board of directors starting in 2020.

The merger comes nearly four years after Dogfish Head sold a 15 percent stake to LNK Partners, a New York-based private equity firm.

As a result of the merger, LNK will exit its investment in the Delaware-based craft brewery.

According to a press release, Boston Beer expects to fund the cash component of the transaction through a combination of cash on hand and its available credit line.

The merger brings together the Brewers Association’s second-largest craft beer maker, Boston Beer, with the 13th ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada: Wild Rose Brewery agrees to be acquired by Sleeman Breweries
Alberta’s Wild Rose Brewery Ltd. (“Wild Rose”) officially announced on May 10 that it has been acquired by Sleeman Breweries Ltd. (“Sleeman”). The sale was approved on May 9 by Wild Rose shareholders and marks the beginning of a partnership between the two organizations which will allow both parties to strategically leverage their strengths and complementary portfolios as they continue to accelerate their growth in Alberta. The deal will be finalized on May 31, 2019.

Since it was established by two local entrepreneurs in 1996, Wild Rose has made a name for itself brewing exciting beer. Over the years, the business has expanded operations from its humble beginnings in a garage to its current 40,000 square foot Calgary brewing facility. Wild Rose now produces a number of different brands and styles in bottles, cans and kegs available to beer lovers in pubs, restaurants and liquor outlets all across Alberta. In addition to the brewery, Wild Rose also operates a Taproom where consumers can experience its finely crafted beers, including signature crowd pleasers like Velvet Fog and Wraspberry Ale, while enjoying a variety of food offerings.

Barley news Canada: Barley stocks decrease by 26.6% as of March 31
On March 31, 2019, stocks of wheat, barley, corn for grain, oats, dry peas and lentils were down in Canada compared with the same date in 2018. Conversely, stocks of canola and soybeans were up year over year. Lower stocks were generally a result of lower on-farm stocks, Statistics Canada reported.

Total barley stocks decreased from the same date in 2018, falling 26.6% to 2.5 million tonnes on March 31, a record low for this period. On-farm stocks fell 28.4% to 2.2 million tonnes, while commercial stocks decreased 10.0% to 306 000 tonnes.

Lower year-over-year inventories of barley combined with higher exports to decrease stocks. Low global stocks, strong world prices for feed barley, and low world supplies of malting barley likely drove exports higher (+10.3%) compared with March 31, 2018.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Alberta’s craft beer market growing despite trade challenges
According to Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC), there are 115 licensed breweries in Alberta, with another 13 breweries in the application process, Globalnews.ca reported on May 3.

That’s a large increase from 2013 when there were only 10 breweries operating in the province. Since then, the ALGC removed minimum production requirements and the industry has been booming

Blindman Brewing out of Lacombe is entering its fourth year of operation and was the 20th craft brewery to open in the province.

“It’s been phenomenal,” said Trevor Jay, a sales representative with the brewery.

“I think people were ready for a change. We’ve been drinking the same beer in this province for 100 years, so when the law changed, the whole conversation changed.”

A provincial government grant aimed at offsetting a C$1.25 tax on beer in Alberta announced in 2016 opened the playing field for more craft breweries to enter the market.

The grant only applied to Alberta brewers, raising concerns with out-of-province competitors, who fought it on the grounds that it was unconstitutional.

Last year, Alberta was ordered to repeal the grant program, which the province appealed.

Early last month, a three-member judicial panel reserved its decision whether to overturn the ruling that the grant program was unconstitutional.

A new brewery and restaurant has opened in the southwestern Ontario community of Harrow, although only the latter half of the business is currently in operation, the Canadian Beer News reported on May 7.

The Beerded Dog Brewing Company has been founded by couple Rae Kratz and Kim Iler, and opened for food service in early April while awaiting its liquor license which came through last week.

Brewery news USA, AL: Oversoul Brewing almost ready to launch in Helena
A new local brewery that plans to be a fun gathering place for friends, families, craft beer lovers and more is almost ready to tap its kegs and make the first pours in the heart of Old Town Helena, the Shelby County Reporter said on May 6.

Oversoul Brewing, owned by brothers Jason and Scott Pruitt, have spent more than a year juggling their time between working their day jobs, making additions to the brewery and brewing beer in preparation for the opening.

What started out as a passion for craft beer several years ago transformed into an opportunity to open a brewery, and starting this weekend, Jason and Scott will be able to share their beer with the Helena community and beyond at the brewery located at 4161 Helena Road.

“We started brewing around 2006 with a group of us that worked together at a local outdoor store,” Jason Pruitt said. “We traveled and camped together, and we found some cool breweries and better beer outside of Alabama, and we decided to give it a shot to brew our own.”

After brewing a few batches, the hobby eventually evolved to brewing beer in a garage and not long after, the brothers started a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Secatogue Brewing Co. opens its doors in West Islip
Celebrating his 30th birthday was the second most fun thing Ken Srubinski did on Friday, May 3, GreaterBayShore reported.

The first was opening Secatogue Brewing Co. in his hometown of West Islip with his family.

“It has been a long time coming,” said Ken, who originally planned on opening two years ago before hitting a series of delays. “It is great and rewarding to finally be open.”

Ken, the head brewer, is running the new South Shore brewery with his wife and high school sweetheart, Katie, his two brothers, Tom and Zach, among other family members.

The brewery, located at 375 Union Boulevard, is 4,300 square feet and holds about 100 people.

Perfect location for the Srubinksis, who all live minutes away.

“My ride to work now is five minutes on a busy day,” said Tom, laughing.

Secatogue Brewing Co. — named after the former Native American tribe that used to occupy the area — had six beers on tap opening weekend.

Among them included Pink Hibiscus IPA, an early fan favorite, as well as New England-styled IPAs, a blonde ale, and witbier.

“We’re hoping everyone loves our beer because we got a lot of things planned and a lot more beer to come,” said Ken.

Going forward, the West ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Wolf Brewing Co. headed to Mechanicsburg
Wolf Brewing Co. is headed to Mechanicsburg, PennLive.com reported on May 7.

Brewery owners Derek and Elaine Wolf, who are active on the brewing circuit and have the hardware to prove it, will open a 7,000-square foot facility in the Market Square portion of Landmark Legacy Park, located off South Market Street.

The neighborhood style community is under construction and will have more than 680 homes along with commercial space. The Wolfs anticipate turning on the brewery’s taps as early as 2020.

The facility will encompass a brewery, taproom, lounge and kitchen with indoor seating for between 100 and 120 guests. In addition, guests can sit on an outdoor patio during warmer weather for special events and yard games.

The taproom will serve comfort food with a gourmet twist. Beer will be brewed on a 10-barrel system and cover traditional and non-traditional styles along with seasonal offerings.

The high school sweethearts have immersed themselves in the world of brewing.

“We started entering local pouring events/competitions and Beer Judge Certification Program sanctioned competitions across the country,” Elaine Wolf said. “That unbiased feedback is truly invaluable.”

The Wolfs have accumulated 118 awards from all 50 states with 54 different beers at home brew and commercial competitions. They are fresh ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Rough Edges Brewing set to open its first location in Waynesboro
Locals can soon sit back and enjoy a pint at a new brewery coming to Waynesboro's Main Street, the Chambersburg Public Opinion reported on May 7.

Rough Edges Brewing is set to open its first location in the old Main Street Diner building adjacent to Christine's Cafe, according to Bill Kohler, director of economic development for Mainstreet Waynesboro Inc.

“Good things are happening downtown and we invite everyone to come down and experience it!" he said.

Co-owner of the brewery, Casey Frost-Phebus, said the new business will offer a rotation of beers, along with light finger foods. It also plans to eventually partner with downtown restaurants and possibly some food trucks in an effort to drive more business downtown.

Since brewing became a hobby for the couple about three years ago, they began by taking their passion to the next level by going to local farmers markets and a beer festival to share samples. In addition, Frost-Phebus' husband, Wes, works at Something Wicked Brewing Co. in Hanover.

"We have gotten extremely positive feedback from the community, so we decided to pursue obtaining our license and opening a brewery," she said.

As Waynesboro natives, the downtown location was a natural choice for the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Alexandria’s Aslin Beer Co. planning new facility in town next month
Alexandria’s Aslin Beer Co. plans to open its new production facility and 3,500-square foot tasting room in June at 847 S. Pickett St. in the city's West End neighborhood, Andrew Kelley, a co-founder, said on May 8.

And the company is hiring.

Aslin Beer is hiring cooks, food runners and bussers.

Aslin decided last year to move its headquarters from Herndon to Alexandria.

The lease is for 25,000 square feet, which will include 15,000 square feet of production. The rest will be taken up by office space, private event space, a tasting room and retail space, according Kelley.

The company brews the #1 beer by Virginia Beer Advocates according to votes from Virginia beer fans. The beer is called Double Orange Starfish, a New England IPA.

Aslin is already getting involved in the Alexandria community. The company is one of the sponsors of SCAN’s (Stop Child Abuse Now) 7th Annual Croquet & IPA Day coming up in Alexandria on May 16, from 5-8 p.m. at Waterfront Park in Old Town. Croquet Day provides funding for SCAN to address the needs of the community’s most at-risk children.

One of the reasons Alexandria was a natural choice, Kelley said, is because Port City has done such a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Stave and Nail Brewing eyeing Memorial Day weekend launch in San Marcos
Justin Stambaugh is a double agent. Not only does he head brewing operations for San Marcos’ Rip Current Brewing, he is also working to open up his own business with his brother. That brick-and-mortar interest is conveniently located right next door to Rip Current at 1325 Grand Avenue, Suite 107. When it opens on Memorial Day weekend, it will go by the name Stave and Nail Brewing, a moniker that alludes to Justin and Joe Stambaugh’s MO, westcoastersd.com reported on May 6.

“Barrel-aging is a huge focus for us, so much so that we named our brewery after the process of barrel-aging and blending,” says Justin, who began his career with Rip Current in 2012. At the time, he figured he’d work there a year then start his own brewery, but soon learned that was far too ambitious (and a bit naïve). He went on to rise through the ranks, take the reins on Rip Current’s barrel-aged sour program and make a key hire, bringing on his brother as assistant brewer. Joe later moved on to Mikkeller Brewing San Diego, where he is still employed. Together, they have a combined decade of professional brewing experience in San Diego County…but they won’t ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Gillingham Brewing opens its doors in Hillier

The initial pair of beers available in the Gillingham taproom and bottle shop are Pale Ale 25 (6.2% abv, 35 IBU), described as being “somewhere between an American Pale Ale and a British Strong Ale,” and Hopped Wheat (6.5% abv, 35 IBU), which is a “tropical delight [with] hints of spice, passion fruit, banana with a punch of grapefruit.”

Gillingham Brewing is located at 1316 Wilson Road in Hillier, and is open from 12:00 noon to 6:00 PM on Saturday, and 12:00 noon to 5:00 PM on Sunday.

Brewery news USA, SD: Severance Brewing Co. opening this summer in Sioux Falls
Uptown Sioux Falls is going to be bustling with fun things to do this summer and if you're old enough you can experience a brand new one of a kind brewery opening this summer, KSFY reported on May 5.

Scott Heckel and Mark Stavenger are starting their new adventure in uptown Sioux Falls. They decided it was time to become their own bosses and leave their full-time jobs in corporate America.

Whisky news UK: Diageo submits building application for reopening Port Ellen distillery
In October 2017, Diageo announced plans to reopen its distillery Port Ellen on Islay that has been closed since 1983. Now, with the submission of a detailed building application to the relevant administrative authorities of Argyll & Bute, they have taken an important step forward, Whisky.com reported on May 7.

The new Port Ellen Distillery aims to combine tradition and modernity in two ways:

Existing buildings, such as those with the old pagoda roof and the warehouses the sea side, will be restored and complemented by a completely new still house.

Second combination of traditional and modern is the way whisky will be produced. One pair of stills will be a copy of those of the old Port Ellen distillery to replicate the old style of the Port Ellen whisky, while a second pair of smaller stills will create an alternative character and will be used to experiment with modern styles, as Diageo explains.

Master Distiller Georgie Crawford, who was announced to be leader of the project Port Ellen Distillery, said: “This is another hugely significant milestone on our journey to bring Port Ellen Distillery back to life. This is no ordinary distillery project, we are bringing a true whisky legend back to life ...More info on site

Brewery news Estonia: Craft brewer Tanker opens new production facility just outside of Tallinn
Tanker, one of Estonia's largest craft beer producers, have opened a new production plant in the town of Jüri just south of Tallinn, ERR.EE reported on May 8.

According to the company, the new plant increases their production capacity almost tenfold.

Tanker will also introduce a canning line and become the first Estonian craft beer producer to offer its drinks in cans as well as bottles.

According to CEO Jaanis Tammela, the new brewery was long overdue, as Tanker ran out of space soon after it started its business in 2014.

So far a unique addition on the Estonian craft beer scene is Tanker's new canning line, made by Cask Global Canning in Canada.

According to Tammela, cans have several advantages. "First of all, the beer is better preserved in cans because oxygen and UV light can't get to the product. Brewery news Nigeria: Heineken Nigeria to raise prices to offset tax increase
Heineken NV’s Nigerian unit plans to raise prices this year to offset a sharp increase in taxes, Bloomberg reported on May 7.

Nigerian Breweries Plc expects excise duties to jump about 67 percent to 35 naira ($0.10) per liter in the second half of the year, as the government phases in tax increases on alcoholic beverages, Chairman Kolawole Jamodu said a statement handed to reporters.

“We need to increase prices to compensate for inflation pressure and the impacts of excise tax,” Managing Director Jordi Borrut Bel told reporters on May 7 in Lagos, the commercial capital.

The Lagos-based company signed an agreement with CrossBoundary Energy to supply 650 kilowatts of solar power to its plant in Ibadan, in the southwest of the country to replace more expensive diesel generators, Bel said. Solar power will also be installed at its Lagos brewery and other plants “if it’s successful at Ibadan”, he said.

The nation’s biggest brewer sources 57 percent of its raw materials locally and plans to increase that to 60 percent by 2020, Bel said.
