Brewery news Sri Lanka & China: Sri Lankan beer trying to conquer Chinese consumers
Ranil Oninda recently did a "brave" thing - promoting Sri Lankan beer in Qingdao, a coastal Chinese city best known for its century-old brewer Tsingtao, China.org.cn reported on May 29.

As a marketing consultant for Lion Holdings Trading (Shenzhen) Limited, Oninda distributed the signature black beer to visitors for a taste in the just-concluded Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) International Trade and Investment Fair.

The three-day fair which closed on May 26 attracted more than 400 companies and other institutions, including over 150 from overseas. The fair exhibits the cultural industries, tourism, home appliances and other products of SCO member states.

It was not the first time for him to showcase the Lion beer from Sri Lanka in China. "With closer trading ties between the two countries, it is easier to do business with Chinese clients," he said.

Two months ago, Oninda brought 48 containers of roughly 2.5 million bottles of Lion beer to China. The beers have been quickly snapped up by customers in provinces such as Guangdong, Hubei and Hunan.

Even if the first battle was won, Oninda still worried before marching to Qingdao in Shandong Province, the birthplace of the world-famous Tsingtao beer. Beer drinking is a distinctive lifestyle in Qingdao, where picky ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Pub giants stock beer over fears of no-deal Brexit
About £6 million of Spanish lager Estrella Damm was snapped up by Marston’s pub chain ahead of the original March deadline for our EU exit – scheduled for October, the Daily Star reported on May 25.

The Wolverhampton-based firm said it had banked about three months’ worth of stock.

While most of Marston’s drinks are brewed here, the popular lager is imported from Barcelona.

Now, other pub chains say they are preparing for the possibility of a no-deal Brexit.

Greene King, which runs 2,900 pubs, said it was continuing to monitor the withdrawal negotiations and had identified “key areas of risk” to its business from the feared outcome.

A spokesman said: “We’re working closely with our supply-chain partners to safeguard the continued supply of goods to our pubs and breweries, as well as the export of our beers.”

The UK’s pub and brewing industry supports almost 900,000 jobs and contributes more than £23billion to the economy.

But Brigid Simmonds, head of the British Beer & Pub Association, which represents pub chains, downplayed fears of beer shortages.

She said: “Around 82% of the beer sold in the UK is brewed here, mainly using British hops and barley. We can produce as much as 10million pints of beer per day, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: US court rules partially in favour of Molson in ad row with AB InBev
A U.S. court on May 24 barred Anheuser Busch InBev NV, the world’s largest beer maker and brewer of Budweiser brand beers, from using parts of its marketing that said rival Molson Coors Brewing Co’s MillerCoors used corn syrup in the production of its light beers, Reuters reported.

In February, Anheuser Busch aired a one-minute Bud Light commercial during the National Football League’s Super Bowl championship game that taunted Molson Coors for adding corn syrup, a sweetener, to its Miller Lite and Coors Light brews.

Federal court judge William Conley of the Western District of Wisconsin ruled partially in favor of Molson Coors in a lawsuit against Anheuser Busch for false advertising and misuse of the Miller and Coors trademarks.

In his ruling, Conley said Anheuser Busch had hoped to exploit confusion surrounding the use of corn syrup in beer production, and that “consumers would interpret advertising statements about ‘made with corn syrup’ or ‘brewed with corn syrup’ as corn syrup actually being in the final products.”

MillerCoors, the U.S. arm of Molson Coors, has said that Miller Lite and Coors Light do use corn syrup, while Bud Light uses rice, to aid fermentation. But it says that the sweetener gets consumed by the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Constellation Brands subsidiary fined for trade practice violations
Crown Imports, a subsidiary of drinks giant Constellation Brands, has been fined US$420,000 by the US Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) for alleged “trade practice violations” in Chicago, The Drinks Business reported on May 28.

In a newsletter published on 24 May, the TTB announced that it had accepted a “$420,000 offer in compromise from Crown Imports LLC for alleged trade practice violations”.

In a supporting document, it claimed that Crown Imports, which has a portfolio of beer brands including Corona Extra, Corona Light, Modelo Especial, Pacifico, Negra Modelo and Victoria, had “engaged in activities and conduct that violated 27 U.S.C 205(b).”

Expanding on this, it claimed that Crown had entered into agreements or understandings with retailers in Illinois indirectly through an independent third party or an affiliate of the retailer. Payment of these parties resulted in the retailer receiving money for “advertising, display and distribution services” relating to Crown’s portfolio of beer brands. In sum, Crown effectively paid to gain shelf space for its products.

According to the TTB, the violations occurred during the period 1 January 2016 and 25 April 2019 at an address in Chicago, Illinois.

This comes after a number of companies including Heineken USA and Eagle Brands ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Winter barley harvest could rise to 3.3 mln tonnes this year
Ukraine’s 2019 winter wheat harvest is likely to rise 8.4 percent to 25.9 million tonnes due to a higher yield, APK-Inform consultancy said on May 28, citing state weather forecasters.

It said the winter barley harvest could rise to 3.3 million tonnes this year from 2.9 million tonnes a year earlier.

Analysts say the winter wheat yield could total 4.0 tonnes per hectare, while the yield for barley may be 3.3 tonnes. Last year, the winter wheat yield was 3.73 tonnes per hectare and winter barley was 3.35 tonnes.

Winter wheat dominates Ukrainian wheat harvest, accounting for more than 95 percent of the planted wheat area. Ukraine harvested a total of 24.6 million tonnes of wheat in 2018.

The agriculture ministry has said this year’s wheat harvest could total 26.9 million tonnes.
