News Articles

Brewery news USA, NC: Legion Brewing Company announces third Charlotte location
Legion Brewing Company announced its third Charlotte location on West Morehead Street on June, 5, the Charlotte Magazine reported.

The brewery describes this new site as a "production facility and taproom," opening in the fall of 2020. It will have the production area, taproom, courtyard, and biergarten, along with full food and beer menus.

Legion opened its second location in SouthPark last year. This third facility's address will be 2001 W Morehead St., with development led by White Point Partners.

Brewery news USA, AZ: Borderlands Brewing Company poised to open new brewing facility in North Phoenix
One of the fastest growing breweries in North America, Borderlands Brewing Company, is poised to open a new brewing facility and public house in North Phoenix that will open sometime this summer near the Deer Valley Airport, the Foothills Focus reported on June 5.

Borderlands Brewing and Public House will be located near 7th Avenue and Deer Valley Road across from the airport in the old Anthem Automotive garage. The 7,000-square-foot location was secured in January and will be a taproom only, meaning it won’t have a kitchen so customers will have the option of bringing in their food or getting it delivered.

According to the American Brewers Association, Borderlands was the ninth-fastest growing brewery in the United States in 2018.

Business partners Marshall Norris and Matt Wright decided they wanted some skin in the game, working out a licensing agreement with Borderlands to own and operate the Phoenix location separately from the Tucson-based brewery.

“North Phoenix came up as the third largest area where our products are already being sold, besides downtown Gilbert and downtown Chandler which is where everyone is going to,” Norris said. “We have the heat map of where our [Borderlands] beer is being sold and its right in this ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NL: Dildo Brewing Co. working on new St. John location
Craft brew enthusiasts soon won’t have to leave St. John’s to sip Dildo Brewing Co.’s products or buy their crazy popular T-Shirts, The Western Star reported on June 5.

The brewery is working on a Water Street location that will put it right in the hub of other capital city brew pubs, including Yellow Belly and Bannerman Brewing.

Dildo Brewing Co. co-owner Angela Reid said it’s a manageable step toward expansion and making the product more accessible.

“Keep in mind we don’t have a year under our belt yet,” Reid said.

Dildo Brewing Co. hopes to have its Water Street location — which will sell its merchandizing products, as well as cans of beer and refill Growlers — open in a couple of weeks, pending final approvals and licences. It won’t have a seating area.

The space — 332 Water St., between The Adelaide Oyster House and William L. Chafe & Sons Ltd. — is leased.

Renovations are being done to give the interior the look and feel of the brewery in Dildo.

Reid noted that many St. John’s craft beer enthusiasts take short excursions around the bay to visit the brewery.

“We’ve met some awesome people from the Avalon and have been listening to the feedback,” she ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NM: Ex Novo Brewing Co. opens its new brewery in Corrales
After leaving and founding a successful brewery in one of the nation’s toughest craft markets, a New Mexico-born brewer has returned home and launched a second brewery in his hometown, the Albuquerque Journal reported on June 4.

Ex Novo Brewing Co., which launched in Portland, Ore., opened the doors to its new brewery in Corrales over the Memorial Day Weekend. For founder Joel Gregory, a Corrales native, the opening is a chance to give back to his hometown while launching a new chapter in the brewery’s growth and development.

“We’re feeling like a startup in a lot of ways, and that’s okay,” Gregory said. “It kind of puts a little bit of a chip on our shoulders.”

Gregory grew up in the area and attended Hope Christian School, but left New Mexico for college and ultimately landed in Portland. He launched Ex Novo – Latin for “from new” or “from scratch” – in Oregon in 2014.

Today, Ex Novo operates a brewery and two taprooms in greater Portland, widely considered one of the most competitive craft beer markets in the country. As of 2018, the city boasted 77 breweries, with 117 operating in the larger metropolitan area, according to the Oregon Brewers Guild.

Brewery news USA, NJ: Angry Erik Brewing opening its doors on June 6
After about a year of construction and satisfying various site requirements, Angry Erik Brewing is set to officially open at its new location in Hampton Township later this week, the New Jersey Herald reported on June 5.

Angry Erik employees, with the help of some loyal patrons, were hard at work this week moving furniture and other items to Camre Drive, located off Halsey Road near Route 206, in preparation for the company debuting there on June 6. The new building is about a mile and a half away from the previous location on Millpond Drive in Lafayette, where the brewery had operated since opening in 2014 until its final day Sunday.

Heide Hassing, who co-owns the brewery with her husband, Erik, said the new space is 7,000 square feet -- about three times the size of the Lafayette building -- with the tasting room and production areas both much larger than at the previous spot. In addition, the Camre Drive location features an 800-square-foot outdoor patio, an amenity that was not feasible at Angry Erik's previous home.

"On a nice day like today, people can hang out there," Hassing said on June 3. She added that the patio is dog-friendly, so customers ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Decipher Brewing to become Charlottesville’s newest craft brewery
A group of three Navy veterans and one active Air Force service member are set to open Charlottesville's newest craft brewery in the month of June, CBS19 NEWS reported on June 4.

Decipher Brewing, soon to open in Belmont, was an idea first created roughly ten years ago in Colorado.

Brothers, Scott and Brad Bulton, both veterans of the Navy bought a home brew kit and quickly fell in with the process of making beer.

They say they've been able to take some of the skills learned from nearly a decade in the Navy and translate a hobby into a business.

"When I was in the navy we were stuck on a boat for months at a time," says Brad Burton, head brewer.

"You get used to the structure and you get on a routine. I think you need a bit of a routine in a brewery because of the steps that need to happen when you're brewing a beer."

It's more than just a job to Scott Burton, brewer and general manager.

He has found similarities between the beer industry and his time serving eight years in the Navy.

"I think that the beer community and breweries kind of provide that camaraderie that you get in the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: HighGrain Brewing Co. opens in Silverton
Silverton's first craft brewery just opened in the village's former town hall, and it's taking great strides to minimize its environmental impact, WKRC TV Cincinnati reported on June 5.

HighGrain Brewing Co. opened at 6860 Plainfield Road on May 31.

HighGrain takes eco-friendly steps like planting trees to offset its carbon footprint from cultivating and shipping its grain, buying its electricity from a wind farm and using a high-efficiency geo-thermal HVAC system. None of its beer will be transported off-site, saving on fuel emissions.

Brewery news USA, MN: Lake of the Woods Brewing Company already open in Warroad
Minnesota’s northernmost brewery opened on June 1 in Warroad, the Grand Forks Herald reported.

Lake of the Woods Brewing Company, 104 Main Ave. NE, opened at 11 a.m. and the building was full until bar close at 10 p.m., said Brittney Peterson, head of sales and events for the brewery.

“All around it was a great opening,” Peterson said. “We felt great love from the community.”

Beer drinkers can sit on the patio and look out onto the Warroad River, keeping with the brewery’s “make it lake time” theme, Peterson said.

The brewery is open from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

“While we are a functioning taproom that only sells our beer, we didn’t want to compete against other local businesses in town more than we already are to keep those good relationships,” Peterson said.

Patrons can get food from a food truck, bring in food or get food delivered from other local businesses, an example of the brewery supporting its neighboring businesses, Peterson said.

Ontario-based Lake of the Woods Brewing Company partnered with American-based Lake of the Woods Brewing Company to bring the beer to Minnesota.

This is the first place Americans can buy ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Newport Brewing Company set to open in early July
Newport's best brewery isn't even officially open yet, the Willamette Week reported on June 3.

At least, that's the word on the street in the coastal town perhaps best known in the beer world as the world headquarters for Rogue. Earlier this year, Newport Brewing Company topped the Newport News Times' Best of Newport poll as the business with the most outstanding craft beer—guess handing out samples to drum up attention does pay off.

But the brewery, set to open in early July, does deserve the hype.

Not only is it just a short walk up from the historic bayfront district, making it a prime location for tourists and locals alike, the man who will be overseeing production took home a gold in the hazy IPA category at the Great American Beer Festival in 2018.

Owner Brodie Becksted says Sam Zermeño, who came from Black Market Brewing in Temecula, Calif., was the 26th brewer he interviewed for the job. He'll be working on a 15-barrel, custom-made Portland Kettle Works system, making more of those top-quality hazys, a traditional flagship IPA and a wonderfully fruited, complex gose with raspberry and hibiscus. You can also expect a robust lagering program.

Becksted, a lifelong Newport resident and real ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada: Ontario's abrupt move to end beer sales contract threatens investments
The Ontario government on June 6 passed legislation to end a contract with a beer retailer in Canada’s most populous province calling it a monopoly, but business lobby groups say the abrupt cancellation discourages investment, Reuters reported.

Ontario’s Progressive Conservative government’s surprise proposal last month adds to its list of controversial decisions since coming to power last year, including spending cuts to healthcare and education. The new government is trying to rein in borrowing, which at C$346 billion ($259 billion) in net debt makes it the world’s biggest issuer of sub-sovereign debt.

Privately owned Beer Store is a joint venture between Molson Coors Canada, units of the world’s largest brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev and Japan’s Sapporo Holdings Ltd. It struck a 10-year deal in 2015 with the previous Liberal government to sell beer in Ontario.

The Beer Store accounted for 70% of beer sales by volume in Ontario, according the province. Beer sales in Ontario totalled C$3.3 billion in 2017-18, accounting for nearly 36% of overall Canadian beer sales, according to Statistics Canada.

Canadian and U.S. business lobby groups say the legislation creates uncertainty and dissuades long-term investment.

“Canceling a contract sends an alarming message to the business community in Ontario and beyond which could potentially ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Court dismisses Fate Brewing Co.’s bankruptcy case
Fate Restaurants, LLC’s motion in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Denver to dismiss its Chapter 11 bankruptcy case was approved by Judge Thomas McNamara, The Denver Post reported on June 5.

The company, which does business as Fate Brewing Co., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November. It was working to reorganize itself financially, but failed to do so. It filed for dismissal of the case last month.

Fate shut down Boulder operations May 27 after posting a farewell message on its website.

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Brewers seeking to lure consumers with new concept bars
For generations, Czechs have consumed world-beating volumes of beer in the smoky, wood-panelled rooms of their local pubs, all but indistinguishable from each other bar the brand of lager flowing from the taps.

But tastes are changing, Reuters reported on June 5.

Czechs are increasingly shunning fusty old watering holes and draft beer sales are sliding, so the world-famous brewers of pilsner are looking to inject some pizzazz into the traditional pub and attract younger patrons looking for a hip, modern feel.

“I don’t remember the last time I was in a traditional Czech pub,” said Marcel, a 35-year-old IT worker sipping a beer in Prague’s upcoming Karlin neighborhood which is crammed with trendy bars, cafes and restaurants.

People like Marcel are the kinds of drinkers with disposable income that breweries such as Plzensky Prazdroj, the maker of Pilsner Urquell, are seeking to lure back with new concept bars designed to recharge the traditional Czech pub.

The brewery, owned by Japan’s Asahi, plans to open its first “Pilsnerka” bar catering to the hipster crowd in the capital Prague in the coming months. It also plans to launch about 20 pubs this year tied to other beers in its portfolio such as Kozel, the company said.

Brewery news The Netherlands: Heineken buys minority stake in craft brewery Oedipus
Heineken bought a minority share in Amsterdam craft brewery Oedipus, the NL Times reported on June 6.

Specific details about the deal - like how big the Heineken share is and what the Dutch beer giant paid for it - were not revealed, ANP reports.

Oedipus was established in an Amsterdam kitchen in 2011. In 2015 the company opened its own brewery, with a bar attached. Oedipus will remain an independent brewery with its owners leading the business. But Heineken's shares mean that the small craft brewery can make use of Heineken's knowledge on beer and brewing techniques.

"Dreams need investments and we felt the time was right to make an active choice about our future", Oedipus said in a press release. The founders' dreams include a "modern, sustainable farm brewery in or around Amsterdam", and a new bar that pays attention to beer, food, music and culture, according to the news wire.

Large brewers are increasingly interested in craft beers. Heineken itself already acquired the American Lagunitas and owns an online store called Beerwulf that sells various craft beers.

Brewery news The Philippines: San Miguel Food and Beverage Inc. has no plan to sell shares this year
San Miguel Food and Beverage Inc., the food and beer business of conglomerate San Miguel Corp., said it has no plan to sell shares this year, the Manila Standard reported on June 5.

SMFB president Ramon Ang said in an interview following the annual stockholders’ meeting the company saw no need to conduct a follow-on offering as it is already compliant with the minimum public ownership requirement of the Philippine Stock Exchange.

The share price of SMFB rose in recent weeks on speculation it would soon go back to the equities market to conduct a follow-on offering. “We have no current plans to conduct any follow-on offering this year,” Ang said.

SMFB conducted a share sale last year to comply with the 10-percent public float requirement after implementing a share swap with San Miguel to facilitate the merger of San Miguel Foods Co., San Miguel Brewery Inc. and Ginebra San Miguel.

Ang said the outlook for SMFB remained positive despite the planned imposition of additional excise tax on liquor products.

Brewery news Australia & China: XXXX beer named one of top five most recognized Australian brands in China
XXXX beer has been named one of the top five most recognised Australian brands in China, despite the company saying it has put no resources into the market, the Australian Brews News reported on June 6.

Instead Lion, which owns the Queensland-based brand, has attributed the awareness to tourism exposing Chinese visitors to the brand, as well as its ‘lucky’ branding.

The Australian Brands in China 2019 Index was undertaken by researchers from Monash University and Digital Crew, an Australian-Chinese digital agency.

They surveyed 9,000 Chinese men and women aged between 24 and 67 across two Chinese cities, according to the Australian Financial Review.

The researchers found that XXXX was number four in the top 10 Australian brands recognised by Chinese consumers, in a list consisting largely of hospitality and alcohol brands.

Amy Darvill, Brand Director at Lion, spoke to Brews News about the “pleasant surprise” of seeing XXXX make the list for the first time.

She said that Lion has not invested any marketing spend in China, and they do not track sales in the country.

However she put XXXX’s brand recognition in the notoriously difficult Chinese market to several factors.

“[Firstly] the significant number of Chinese tourists who experience the scale of the XXXX brand when ...More info on site

Brewery news China: AB InBev relaunches its Boxing Cat craft beer
AB InBev has relaunched its Boxing Cat craft beer with the aim of turning Chinese tastes towards the craft beer category, The Drum reported on June 6.

The business brought on R/GA to give the brand a new look, as well as launch an integrated campaign to educate the Chinese audience that currently link craft beer to being expensive or having a heavy taste.

The answer is a new logo that puts the Boxing Cat as the focus and a set of films that introduce him as Louis, a character that is fighting the world’s boring beers.

“Louie is the embodiment of the brand. He’s there to challenge the ordinary, so we see him patrolling the streets, ridding them of mundane beer, one haymaker at a time,” said AB InBev head of craft and specialities for APAC, Nicolas Eduardo Morelli. “It’s beautiful. The storytelling is impactful and we’re incredibly happy with the result.”

The videos and logos take on a graphic-novel style, aimed to appeal to a younger crowd that has thus far been shunning the craft beer category. According to R/GA, craft beer takes up just 1% of beer sales in China, versus up to 14% globally.

“We saw an enormous opportunity for Boxing ...More info on site
