Brewery news USA: AB InBev and MillerCoors brands prevail on America’s biggest beer brands list as always
24/7 Wall St. reviewed United States’ shipping volume data provided by industry advocacy group Beer Marketer’s Insights to identify America’s biggest beer brands.

And while craft beer sales are growing – they were up 4.7% last year over 2017, according to IWSR Drinks Market Analysis report – the market for big commercial brands (the kinds of beer that appear on this list) actually declined 1.5% over the same period. In fact, 19 of the 31 beers ranked here lost traction between 2013 and 2018.

Whatever the reason, it probably wasn’t economic. Beer is actually cheaper now than it used to be. When 24/7 Wall St. recently researched the price of a six-pack every year between 1954 and 2014, and the journalists found that in inflation-adjusted dollars, a six-pack cost $11.67 65 years ago, and only $8.88 in 2014.

Mass-market brews aren’t going anywhere soon, however. Last year, the U.S. beer industry shipped 202.2 million barrels, enough to fill more than 2.8 billion cases of 24 12-ounce cans or bottles, according to America's Beer Distributors. And 82% of the beer we drank was produced domestically. Only eight of the country’s biggest beer brands were imported.

As a look at this list will reveal, the majority ...More info on site

Brewery news Azerbaijan: Carlsberg feels good in Azerbaijan, plans to develop beer production in country
Lars Lehmann, Executive Vice President for Carlsberg Group's Eastern Europe region, said in a recent interview that the company is very pleased to see the great efforts made by Azerbaijani government to develop the business environment, AzerNews reported on June 21.

“Our business feels good in the Azerbaijani market, and we plan to develop beer production in the coming years,” Lehmann said.

He emphasized favourability of investment climate in Azerbaijan and added that after the fall in oil prices in 2015, the government placed even greater emphasis on stimulating the non-energy sector, so as a result, the company observed positive changes in the business environment.

Speaking about sustainable development results, Lehmann stressed that Carlsberg Azerbaijan achieved astounding results in this sphere saying that in three years, the company has reduced consumption of natural gas by 34 percent, water - by 43 percent and electricity - by 33 percent.

Further Lars Lehmann stated that Carlsberg increased revenues by 4.8 percent, net profit - by 6.5 percent and operating profit - by 11 percent.

“For Carlsberg Azerbaijan, 2018 was also very successful. Carlsberg Azerbaijan was able to continue the growth in all indicators,” he said.

Having underlined that presence of intense and fair competition in the market is ...More info on site

Brewery news Malaysia: Heineken Malaysia launches non-alcoholic Heineken 0.0
Heineken Malaysia Bhd has launched its non-alcoholic malt beverage Heineken 0.0, in line with growing consumer trends centred around health-conscious consumers, The Edge Markets reported on June 21.

Heineken Malaysia managing director Roland Bala said he was confident that the new Heineken 0.0 could scale in Malaysia, given its good reception in the 39 markets.

In 2018, an estimated 800,000 hectolitres or 80 million litres of Heineken 0.0 were sold.

“We are selective of the innovations that are relevant to Malaysia and believe that Heineken 0.0 is primed for success.

“We are introducing Heineken 0.0 to give our consumers a new option, so that they can stay in control while having fun, and we look forward to the support of Malaysian consumers,” he told reporters at the launch here yesterday, .

Heineken 0.0 marks a historical milestone for the group and an important addition to its portfolio as it strengthens the brand’s innovation.

The non-alcoholic malt beverage made its debut in Asia last year, launching in Singapore and followed by Thailand earlier this year.

Imported from the Netherlands, a new pack size for the brand will be introduced in a 250ml bottle.

Heineken 0.0 is double-brewed with 100% natural ingredients and goes through a sophisticated de-alcoholisation process.

Barley news Canada: Crop prospects improve thanks to rain last week
The Canadian prairies received some desperately needed rain last week. The heaviest amounts were in the east, but much of the western drought zone seems to have received normal to above normal rainfall. For many regions in the prairies, this rainfall was critical. However, there were notable shortfalls around Saskatoon and Regina, which both registered virtually no rain last week (it is of note that Regina and surrounding areas did start to receive rain this week), CMBTC reported on June 21. Crop prospects have been elevated in a number of regions with these rains. Crops were struggling before this rain and while it is a reprieve, more moisture will be needed to ensure the crop does not return to stressful conditions. This rain has also not eliminated the dry/drought situation, especially in a few regions, but the topsoil moisture has been restored and gives the crop a chance with some short-term relief. Beyond the drought conditions, the other factor that has been a constant in the prairies this year has been the below normal temperatures which have resulted in a slower crop development, although the cool conditions may also have helped maintain crop quality in the dry conditions.

Barley news UK: Spring barley variety Diabolo approved for malt distilling use
Spring barley variety Diablo is now fully approved for malt distilling use, making it the highest-yielding barley on the AHDB Recommended List with this use approval, the FarmersWeekly reported on June 19.

The green light comes from the industry’s malting barley committee, and if the variety, from breeder Limagrain, gets full approval for brewing next year, it will be the highest-yielding dual-use spring barley, says Matt Shand, Limagrain arable wholesale sales manager.

The variety’s fungicide-treated yield of 105% is ahead of other dual-use varieties that can be used for malt distilling and brewing, such as Laureate on 103% and Concerto on 94%.

Diablo’s untreated fungicide yield also sits at the top of the yield table, alongside Laureate at 94%, and 1% more than brewing variety Planet, showing the variety’s robust disease-resistance profile.

In terms of agronomics, the variety has straw characteristics similar to Planet: Medium in height, with good lodging and brackling resistance, although it is rated slightly later maturing.

It has good grain quality, with a specific weight at 67.6kg/hl, compared with Laureate on 66.8kg/hl.

Whisky news UK: Eden Mill reveals further details on planned distillery in St Andrews, Fife
Scottish beer and spirits producer Eden Mill has revealed further details of its new £3.1 million (US$3.9 mln) distillery in St Andrews, Fife, which is expected to be completed by summer 2020, The Spirits Business reported on June 21.

The Scottish producer first revealed plans to build a new distillery and brewery in St Andrews in February 2018. The expansion is part of a longer-term £8 mln (US$10.1 mln) investment programme.

Eden Mill previously submitted a planning application to convert historic paper mill buildings, once home to the Seggie Distillery and Brewery, into a distillery and brewery.

Now, the re-development will occur at a different location on the same overall site within the University of St Andrews’ new Eden Campus, which provides a “more flexible” location “for further expansion and capacity increase”. The new location is at the edge of the estuary overlooking the river up to St Andrews.

Paul Miller, co-founder of Eden Mill, told The Spirits Business: “The previous location was great in terms of history but ultimately impractical for the distillery when plans were developed in detail.”

The “state-of-the-art” facility will allow Eden Mill to increase its whisky capacity from 300,000 litres per annum (approximately 428,571 700 ml bottles) to more than ...More info on site
