Barley news Canada: Survey shows increased barley plantings this year
According to the June Field Crop Survey, Statistics Canada says farmers expect to plant more barley, corn for grain, dry peas, lentils and oats in 2019, but fewer acres of wheat, canola and soybeans.

At the time of the survey, seeding in Western Canada was well under way, aided by dry conditions throughout much of the Prairies. Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba all reported seeding rates well above the five-year average.

Conversely, planting in Eastern Canada has been delayed due to high rainfall and cool temperatures. This may result in some changes in seeded area estimates later in the reporting cycle, as some estimates provided by farmers in Eastern Canada may have been intentions at the time of the survey.

Across Canada, farmers report planting 14.0% more acres of barley to 7.4 million acres. Barley area increased in all three Prairie provinces, which together accounted for 95.2% of barley area in Canada. The larger seeded area may be due to higher prices resulting from low global stocks and the higher anticipated need for livestock feed. Higher barley prices may also have influenced some farmers to plant barley instead of canola, given ongoing trade issues.

Farmers reported planting 3.6 million acres of oats in 2019, up ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Wye Hill Kitchen & Brewing opens its doors in Raleigh
A new brewery, offering seafood and more, has opened for business in Raleigh. The newcomer to Glenwood South, called Wye Hill Kitchen & Brewing, is located at 201 S. Boylan Ave., Hoodline reported on June 24.

With five stars from five reviews on Yelp, the fresh arrival is off to a strong start.

Andrea M., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on June 16, wrote, "We were excited to see this brewpub get not only a much-needed facelift, but also a complete retooling of the menu with a whole new culinary team on board."

Yelper Meribeth D. wrote, "The deck was packed with both people and puppies. The beer and craft cocktails were great but the real star of the show was the food. The crispy fried okra and kimchi rice bowl were both outstanding."

Head on over to check it out: Wye Hill Kitchen & Brewing is open from 5 p.m.–10 p.m. on Tuesday-Sunday. (It's closed on Monday.)

Brewery news USA, OH: Warped Wing Brewing Company to open second brewery in Springboro
Dayton-based Warped Wing will open a second brewery and tasting room to be called “Warped Wing Brewing Company Barrel Room & Smokery” in downtown Springboro, the Dayton Daily News reported on June 21.

The new brewery will be the first retail user for Mills Development’s “Wright Station” project at the intersection of Ohio 741 and Ohio 73. The 20,000-square-foot facility will include a large taproom with outdoor biergarten, barrel-aging space for more than 400 barrels, a taproom, an eatery, a “test-pilot” brewery, special-event space, as well as canning, packakging and distribution equipment, brewery and developer officials said in a release.

The new Warped Wing Brewing Company Barrel Room & Smokery could open as early as the summer of 2020. Nick Bowman, Warped Wing co-founder and vice president of sales and marketing, said he and the brewery’s other co-owners “are absolutely committed to our production brewery and taproom” in downtown Dayton.

“We love being a part of the downtown Dayton community,” Bowman said. “Springboro gives us the opportunity to expand our barrel-aged program and incorporate a pilot system to experiment.”

In a release, Bowman said Warped Wing’s barrel-based program “has propelled us into an interesting place. ... My partner, co-founder and brewmaster John Haggerty ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Stonehooker Brewing Company finally opens in Mississauga
Old Credit Brewing is no longer the only brewery in town, as Stonehooker Brewing Company finally opened a craft brewery in Mississauga’s Port Credit and Lakeview area, insauga.com reported on June 21.

The summertime opening is great news, as the much-anticipated brewery was originally slated to open in September 2018.

But while beer lovers had to wait longer than expected for the facility to become operational, they were able to sample Stonehooker’s Broad Reach Noreaster IPA (5.4% abv) prior to the opening. The Ontario Beverage Network describes the beer as a hazy IPA brewed with Mosaic, Vic Secret and Simcoe hops.

The brewery, founded by Ross Noel with Brewmaster Adam Cherry, features a tap room and retail store with various beers, including a saison, tripel, lager, imperial stout, hefeweizen, porter, milkshake IPA, and double IPA.

As for the perfect name, the Ontario Beverage Network says the moniker “Stonehooker” honours Port Credit’s history as a centre for stonehooking—a method of collecting stone slabs specifically from shores of Lake Ontario that was utilized in the 1800s.

Brewery news USA, WI: Hillsboro Brewing Company set to open new location soon
Co-owners of Hillsboro Brewing Company, Snapper and Kim Verbsky, had their eyes set on a crumbling building in town. When they realized they needed to expand their current restaurant and brewing locations, they knew that buying the building was a no-brainer, WXOW.com reported on June 23.

It took them about a year and a half, but the Verbskys flipped the building to accommodate their vision of a restaurant and event brewery venue. The new location and building would allow for larger tanks, more space and a combination of everything they’ve been hoping for in a brewery.

The couple has been married for 22 years. Throughout those years, they’ve completed several projects together.

“He’s extremely talented and I can kind of visualize, so we’re kind of a dangerous duo in that way,” Kim said. “I think we both walked in and saw what this brewery could be and it all came together. We’re really excited.”

The building originated in 1914. The building is 105 years old. The Verbskys used the age of the building to their advantage and added a vintage touch to the venue. Their new renovation includes larger brewing tanks, more space, two staircases leading to an upstairs bar and room, new walls, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Beaver Island to get its very own brewery soon
Craft beer is big business in Michigan and until now it has been a mainland industry. Soon that won’t be the case as Beaver Island gets their very own brewery, 9&10 News reported on June 24.

Whiskey Point Brewing Company started as an idea five years ago, a business plan three years ago and is now on the verge of becoming a reality, adding to the identity and culture of the Emerald Isle.

“Everyone’s really excited about it,” says part time islander Suzanne Lang.

“This will be their brewery and as this product goes forward to the rest of Michigan at some point, everybody will see this as Beaver Island’s beer,” says founder and head brewer Patrick McGinnity.

It is not unusual to see a new brewery popping up in Michigan. But it is unusual to see one in a place like Beaver Island, Whiskey Point Brewing will be the first island based brewery in Michigan.

“If I wasn’t on Beaver Island, I wouldn’t be starting a brewery,” says McGinnity, “My interest is in starting a brewery here, not just starting a brewery. This is the only place it was going to happen for me.”

McGinnity is the mind behind the venture. He moved to Beaver ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Eagle Park Brewing Co. planning Muskego brewery and distillery
Just 15 months after moving into a new East Side taproom and less than three years after getting its start, Eagle Park Brewing Co. plans to open a 20,500-square-foot brewery and distillery in Muskego, BizTimes reported on June 21.

BizTimes Milwaukee first reported in early May that plans were in the works for a brewery in Muskego, but the operator was not named at that time.

The new brewery, to be located at S64 W15680 Commerce Center Parkway, will have seating for up to 300 people, a full restaurant and additional private event space.

It will also have a to-go beer counter designed around the company’s taproom beer release model that currently features weekly releases. Eagle Park plans to expand its membership program to 1,000 people. The program is currently full and capped at 500 people.

The brewery will have a 20-barrel brewhouse built by Quality Tank Solutions in Oconomowoc.

Eagle Park is also adding a distillery and winery with the expansion.

The distillery will have initial capacity for 3,000 cases annually. The company hired Jordan Stielow, formerly the head distiller of Breckenridge Distillery in Colorado, as head distiller.

The winery will primarily focus on the production of hard cider.

Eagle Park started in January 2017 in the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Humdinger Brewing coming to the Village of Arroyo Grande
A new brewery is coming to the Village of Arroyo Grande, and it’s moving into a familiar spot, the San Luis Obispo Tribune reported on June 25.

Humdinger Brewing is the brainchild of two home brewers: Lee Samways and Justin Amy. The pair, who met through local home-brewing clubs, decided to go into business together on Easter Sunday and quickly found a place to set up shop.

Their brewery will be located at 116 W. Branch Street, which previously housed Italian tapas restaurant Sconos and, before that, Comfort Market.

“It was almost exactly what we were looking for in terms of size and location,” Samways said. Luckily, the owner of the building was looking for a brewery to move in, Amy said, noting that the building was originally used as a bar in the 1930s.

Samways and Amy said they hope to open up by Nov. 1, but realistically may open their doors closer to the beginning of 2020.

“We knew the Village of Arroyo Grande was the last spot in the area that needed a brewery, so that’s why we chose this area to jump on,” Samways said.

The space is about 1,500 square feet and includes an outdoor area. Both men invested about $50,000 ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Biggerstaff Brewing Company eyes early next year opening
A new brewery is coming to Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward, with a menu from a James Beard Award-nominated chef, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported on June 25.

Asana Partners and SRS Real Estate Partners announced that Clay and Sarah Davies will open Biggerstaff Brewing Company early next year at 521 Edgewood Ave. The 5,800 square-foot brewery will be down the block from Staplehouse, the much-lauded restaurant where Ryan Smith serves as the executive chef.

Smith will design Biggerstaff’s menu, which will feature house-made charcuterie, small plates, sandwiches, salads and snacks, all designed to pair with the brewery’s beers.

“We’re ecstatic to have Chef Ryan Smith bring his craft and vision to our menu,” Clay Davies said of the partnership in a prepared statement. “He has done an amazing job with Staplehouse. We can’t wait for our customers to experience our craft beers with his award-winning food.”

The beer lineup will focus on IPAs but will also feature sours, coffee beers and other offerings such as a smoked pale ale. In addition, Biggerstaff plans to open in the mornings to serve Intelligentsia coffee and espresso along with locally-made pastries. Barley news UK: Scottish barley growers focus on just one malt distillery
A group of Scottish malting barley growers is banding together to supply the needs of one malt whisky distillery to put them in a good position if the Scotch cycle ever turns down, the FarmersWeekly reported on June 24.

Specialist spring malting barley farmers along the Moray Firth are growing grain for Aberlour, one of 100-plus malt whisky distilleries scattered across the highlands and islands of Scotland.

The Speyside distillery produces one of Iain Green’s favourite drams and prompted him to send 2,500t of his best barley to produce one of the industry’s top-selling single malt whiskies.

Mr Green’s family farm grows 722ha of spring barley from a base near the mouth the River Spey, with more than half the farm’s barley heading up the river to the well-hidden Speyside distillery.

“We are hoping that there will be a long-term gain so if the market ever becomes saturated then we will still get a good price premium,” he tells Farmers Weekly.

The current price for his Aberlour barley is the same as that of his other malting barley crops, but there are hopes of gaining a small price premium in the future.

There is also a hope that if the whisky industry takes a downturn as ...More info on site

Barley news Ireland: Winter barley hits record area this year
Ireland’s winter barley area has soared in recent years and increased from 56,000 ha in 2018 to a massive 80,000 ha in 2019, according to provisional results from the Department of Agriculture.

Speaking at the Goldcrop open day, Donal Fitzgerald put forward two main reasons for this increase and added that in 2006 the area of the crop sown was just 15,000ha.

“Last year, winter barley performed reasonably well. It beat the drought. We had good yields, typically speaking 3.5-4t/ac in many places and the straw that came from the winter barley crop was highly lucrative.”

He added that the crop provided approximately double the grain output as spring barley and, as a result, winter barley area increased as growers decided that they needed to risk-proof their systems.

However, winter barley is not without its challenges; no more so in 2019, as tillage farmers look to a season without neonicotinoids.

Donal, who is the general manager of arable seeds at Goldcrop, stated that the first challenge that has to be overcome is the loss of Redigo Deter (a neonicontinoid seed dressing which provided control of barley yellow dwarf virus).

The use of the product was increasing year-on-year. Donal added that last year approximately 70% of the ...More info on site
